Lightroom 3 is sloooow and craaashiing...
Can someone in Adobeland help with this? I've read other forum topics but not sure they apply.
Basically, LR is crashing at the slightest move, and is slow as molasses before doing so. I'm
assuming there's a simple solution, such as renaming the catalog (?) or something similar, but
I'm afraid to do anything without a little guidance.

Hi Beat,
Thanks for your suggestions. I tried optimizing and it just gets hung up. So I did what you suggested - threw away the plist files in preferences. I reopened using the backup file.
That seems to have helped a little - at least it's loading previews now, but alas, it's still not working well. I tried a basic adjustment and once again, it's the beach-ball of death.
Any other ideas?

I am trying to install Lightroom and I am OK until it asks for a serial number. I purchased Lightroom from B&H and the have entered the seal number on the the B&H invoice. Nothing happens, not all the entry boxes are filled with the serial number that was provided by B&H. I looked for a serial number on and in the box it came in, nada. Can I use the Lightroom 5 Upgrade on a Lightroom 4.4 Student and Teacher edition?

I currently own a Lightroom 4 Student&Teacher edition. I am pretty happy with it, but thinking about upgrading to the 7D Mark II which is not supported by Lightroom. I am only a student for a very short while longer so I either have to buy a LR 5 Student&Teacher now (which could be a close call due to my student status running out in two weeks) or buy the upgrade version later. (They pretty much cost the same) But I don't know if my version of Lightroom can be upgraded. I do remember there used to be limitations in place not letting you upgrade, but as far as I remember this was a Photoshop limitation. Couldn't find any hard facts about this however, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

ManuTo be clear, you only need to qualify as a student to purchase your initial version of Lightroom. Once you have that serial number that begins with 1160, you qualify to purchase any and all upgrades in the future at the upgrade price. If Lightroom 4 is still installed on the computer, then the upgrade installer will find the Lightroom 4 serial number and you will only be required to provide the new serial number for the upgrade. If you decide to purchase a new computer, which will probably happen at some point in the future, then Lightroom 4 will not have been installed and you will need both the Lightroom 4 serial number as well as the serial number for the upgrade installation.
We see a lot of people coming to the forums and say that they no longer have their serial number and want to install Lightroom on a new computer. Serial numbers are critical, and should be recorded in multiple places. One of the best ways to make sure that you can always access your serial numbers is to register your software after it has been installed. Then you can always access your Adobe account and retrieve required serial numbers. But as a safeguard, it would be a good idea to store serial number files on multiple hard drives and even in a physical card file. Without the serial numbers, it's like having a new car and no key to start it. -

Lightroom (1.4.1 and 2.0) doesn't properly save IPTC in UTF8?
I'm having problems viewing metadata written in Lightroom 1.4.1 or 2.0 beta in other applications.
I write titles, captions and keywords in Lightroom on Mac OSX, using danish characters such as Æ Ø and Å. I then export the files to a JPG, and try to use it in for example Flickr and Menalto Gallery 2.2.4 (both of which can read IPTC tags), but in both cases the danish characters do not display correctly, and I have to manually edit all titles, captions and keywords containing them, after I have uploaded.
This prompted me into doing a bit of research on what was actually written to the file, and it seems that both Lightroom 1.4.1 and 2.0 beta do not correctly write IPTC tags in UTF8.
I've been using Exiftool to view the metadata on one of the files exported from Lightroom (both versions), and this is what I see: The XMP tags display correctly, but the IPTC tags do not.

Reading the Exiftool forums, it seems that according to the IPTC specification, IPTC supports UTF8 encoded metadata, but it *requires* that the field IPTC:CodedCharacterSet is set to "UTF8" or "ESC % G". My theory is that Lightroom *does* write IPTC tags in UTF8, but doesn't write the CodedCharacterSet field (I can't see it), and Exiftool then interprets the IPTC data as latin1 (or something similar), and gets the characters wrong. It seems that this is what Flickr and Gallery 2.2.4 are doing as well.

Am I correct? And can Lightroom be changed to properly export IPTC metadata in UTF8?I did a bit more research: I tried setting the CodedCharacterSet to utf8 myself:

Finally I tried saving the content of the IPTC tags to a file, and opened that with TextMate, forcing it to interpret it as MacRoman. That worked. There were still a few weird characters here and there, but the danish characters were displayed.
So apparently Lightroom 1.4.1 and 2.0b on Mac OSX are saving their IPTC tags in MacRoman encoding. I would *really* like an option to have IPTC tags written in UTF8, because the IPTC tags currently generated from my Lightroom on Mac cannot be read properly on Windows or Linux systems. -

Lightroom 6 is up and running. Upgraded from LR5. However I want to change the file name to be more generic, e.g., description in LR5 references LR5 and I want to change that to just John G's LR Catalog/Library.lrcat. How can I accomplish this without fouling everything up?

Note that the applet can only contact the server that is was loaded from, so you might want to do a getCodeBase() or something like that to get the server address.

I have used lightroom for ~2 years and have lightroom 5.5 installed on a PC. Yesterday evening I uploaded a new set of photos which I cataloged and rated as usual. After that when I switched to the develop module trouble began. First thing was when using the crop tool the picture would disappear and only reappear once I closed the tool. Then exposure and White balance changes would change the histogram but not the appearance of the photo. Finally clipping was also not appearing on the picture. I first reuploaded the photos. No effect. Then I reinstalled lightroom. No effect. Help please!

Lightroom 4.2 catalog and importing problems
I have imported photos into the catalog but when I go to import new photos from the same folder it does not recognize the already imported photos and lists them as new photos still. Also, it won't import any video files of any extension even though all are listed on the Lightroom website as valid and usable extensions. On top of that dynamiclinkmediaserver.exe32 is constantly running, even after Lightroom is shut down. Any ideas?

Could you please post a screenshot of the import window you use while importing the files.
My guess is that there are some wrong settings which you have selected while importing the files in Lightroom.

The basic module in Lightroom 5 has disappeared and cannot figure out how to restore it. This is a major part of Lightroom and am helpless without it. I have a subscription to CC. My EMail address i<removed by Moderator>. I would appreciate help getting Lightroom reinstalled.

I have Lightroom 1.4.1 and I just started shooting the Nikon D700. I cannot get Lightroom to read my new raw files, help... Is there a plug in or update I can get? I can't afford new software after new camera and new lense!
Lightroom 1.4.1 does not support native (NEF) files from the D700 because the camera didn't even exist when it was released. To get support you have two options: upgrade to Lr 2.x (paid for upgrade) or convert your NEF files to DNG.

Lightroom 2 is up and running - what do I do with Lightroom 1?
Mi Lightroom 2 is up and successfully running. I am now confident that I do not wish to go back to V 1.4, which I did not uninstall upon installing V 2. The question is: can I now get rid of V1.4? How? Any risk I should beware of? I'm a Mac user, running OS 10.5.5 on a Power Mac G5 with 3GB RAM.

Sergio BuraniYou *could* remove the 1.4 (1.4.1, hopefully) program... but you may wish to wait a while to make "doubly-sure" LR2 won't throw a wrench in your gears... put LR2 "through it paces" in all aspects. I see posts fromm many users who "suddenly" have fairly major issues in LR2 after it has been running "OK" for some time.
As for HOW to remove the program from a Mac and any Mac-specific issues... well, I'm PC...
Me personally... I'm waiting for an update before going to LR2. If I had gone to LR2 early on, I would NOT have removed LR1 (yet).
If you have your LR 1.4.1 install saved, and backup your 1.4.1 catalog, just in case... then it is probably safe to remove it (just be sure you can get back to it (LR1)... until LR2 issues are ironed out in an update, or two ("holds breath" ;)).

Since I joined creative cloud, I have not been able to sync. Why the difference? Worked good during initial trial.
Also I had installed the Mosaic app for ipad before Lightroom mobile came out and I cannot seem to get rid of it. How can I get mosaic out? I have cancelled, I have deleted, I have looked through the files for visible remnants.The sync count is 60 and static. The total number synced so far is 500+. None have been synced from the ipad except for corrections made there on those already synced.
I have deleted the Mosaic app from all machines and checked the library folder and have contacted the Mosaic tech support and they have discontinued my subscription. I still get mosaic messages on initiating Lightroom and sometimes at closing.
I have not tried to sync fewer yet, but some catalogs that I have tried are smaller numbers. Initially, it did well on good connections. Nothing works on my home connections over satellite.
