Lightroom 3 not creating folders in Library module

Normally a folder corresponding to the directory I imported my images from is added to the FOLDERS bar in the LIBRARY module.
I didn't realize until today, when I tried to go back to some older photos, that since the beginning of August LR has not been creating a folder with each import. The only way to navigate to those photos is using CATALOG -> ALL PHOTOGRAPHS.
I tried adding a folder with the "+" but that just tries to import photos that are already in my catalog.
Is there a setting that changed? Is this a bug?
Thanks,
-Andy

Ah, well, that makes sense.  If you are "adding" them, then the images themselves are merely being referenced, and LR will not create new folders for them, but use the folders you already have them in.  So in order for them to be in the correct format, you'd have to have them in the correct location you want them referenced as.
If you do, indeed have them in the proper format as you listed, then your most likely problem is you are selecting only the bottom layer, i.e, the final month folder for import.
If you want the entire import path to show up, I believe you have to select the top level one, and use "include subdirectores" to let it find them below that.
This will, of course, scan all of your other folders under there, and most likely identify lots and lots of duplicates, which it will then ignore.  But it will take a bit longer for the software to relalize it already has them and uncheck the ones it thinks it knows about.
From my point of view, doing something similar, I use "move" instead to get it right without having to scan all the potential duplicates.  It doesn't take much more time if the images are on the same disk already.  Moving between disks adds time, but on the same disk it doesn't (effectively, anyway).  It also means that the images get put into the date/format under my top level project automatically, I don't have to create the original structure to begin with. I just load them all into one directory on the same disk, hit import, select the top level project they go into, and let it organize by date.  It displays on the large import window what directories it will be creating and how many images will go in each one.
Anyway, I think that should give you the right ideas!
Cheers!

  • Lightroom not putting folders in subdirectories as directed on import; then not letting me move folders to clean up because "folders already exist" (but they don't!) Please help!

I have used Lightroom for years and have never had issues importing until a few weeks ago. I have a very organized system of files for my portraits - "Portraits" > "Babies & Families" > "2014" > "(Surname)". While importing I create a subfolder using the family surname under "Destination" in LR. It shows an italicized folder in the correct place prior to clicking "Import," but when I go to "Library" mode to select the folder, all the newly created folders are now on the root directory. I try to then drag and drop them to their proper place, but I'm told that a folder by this name already exists in that destination and won't allow the move. Tried emailing a contact at Adobe, and then followed up with a phone call, but haven't heard back. Desperately need help before my entire file system becomes one big mess. Any thoughts or advice graciously welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Anita

Thanks for the tip. That partially took care of the problem. Now all the orphans are back together, but a new root folder called "Photos" has been created as the parent of a new set of "Portraits" > "Babies & Familes" > "2014". So now I have Root folder > "Portraits" > "Babies & Familes" > "2014" > "Surname" AND "Portraits" (at root) > "Babies & Familes" > "2014". I've tried to drag the Surname folders into the preexisting "2014" but it says they already exist, so then I tried dragging "2014" under the preexisting "Portraits" and was able to do that but it somehow screwed up the original "2014" folder which now has a "?" next to "2014" and all it's contents! It's getting worse! What now?

  • Develop settings not showing up in library module view of image

    Hi there
A quick question about an issue I have not seen before.  Imported a raw image .cr2 file from a Canon S95.  Opened develop module and applied clarity, vibrance and sauration adjustements.  Clicked back to Library module and the adjustments have not been made.  Clicked back to Develop and they are there.  Have tried closing LR5 and reopening - the image adjustments are still visibile in Develop, but not in Library.  Any thoughts?  Is this a software issue or a hardware issue (have just upgraded from LR4).  Thanks in advance.

Hi Lee - I'll keep LR running for a while to see what happens.  I did notice that when I did the import of the image, the thumbnails of the images from the SD card were not immediately rendered.  it was possible to see the images by clicking on each one.  When I had previewed each image individually, the thumbnails were visible.  I suppose its possible that my hardware is running very slowly as welll.
    Thanks

  • LR 5.7.1 will not create folders on a network connected Drobo.

LR 5.7.1 on IMac2 (OS 10.9.5) will not create a folder an a Drobo that is USB connected to IMac1 (OS 10.10.2).  The two IMacs are ethernet connected through a router.  When attempting to create a folder on the Drobo from LR on IMac2 an error message from LR is displayed: "Could not complete the folder move. The folder named “2014” could not be created." A folder cannot be uniquely created from LR on the Drobo.  Folders can be created on the Drobo from the desktop of IMac2,  image files can be moved between already created folders on the Drobo and new images can be added to existing folders.  Read and Write permissions are set for all users on both iMacs.  Looking for some help on figuring this out.

Have you successfully Signed Out and back in to CC (or do you still have an error message on CC)?
Sign out, Sign in | Creative Cloud Desktop app
If not and you can't I'd guess it's still the CC that is the problem.  There have been similar issues preventing LR starting here on the forum in the past (do a search, it might help)
After that I'd try the Technical Chat if you can't find anything on the CC forum (IMHO the forums are more likely to be able to help but it might take time).

  • Time capsule not creating folders

I setup time capsule with a external hard drive connected directly to my iMac and it created a backup folder with dated backup sub-folders.  When I moved the drive to my AirPort Extreme router, I was able to get Time Capsule working but it now does not back up to the folders.  I also setup Time Capsule to back up my MacBook and it does the same thing.  No folders, only a "sparse bundle" file.  How do I get it working like it did when it was connected directly?

You cannot.. Time Machine works differently on local and network drives.. see Pondini for the difference in operation.

  • After installing lightroom 5.7 update, the library module has become painfully slow at times. I am running windows 5.7 64 bit.

I am running windows 5.7 64 bit. I have made no other changes. any help with this.
I used to be able to cull in lightroom in the survey mode but the delay is too slow.

I returned to previous 5.5 version of lightroom and it still has the same symptoms. Very slow in library and survey mode. I tried it on various catalogs with the same result. I purged the cache it did not seem to help. Are there any other ideas?

  • ITunes will not create Ringtone - iTunes Library is on ext hard drive

I see the bell in iTunes, iTunes analyzed my library to identify ringtonable songs but when I click to Create Ringtone it processes then doesn't do anything. I keep my library on an external hard drive to allow for my wife to connect to it at will. Must the library be local to store the ringtones?

I have the same issue. It looks like it will create it then just quits.

  • Itunes will not create a blank library, it creates a new library with all of my same content from the other library. I followed the instructions but itunes will not give me a blank library???

I have looked up how to create the new blank itunes library and every site has the same copy and pasted instructions. They are simple but have no troubleshooting solutions. It creates my wifes new library with all of the same content from my library. How can I make the whole thing blank so I can sync her new device without putting all of my stuff on there?

Having opened the supposedly blank library go to Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. Should clear things up.

  • CWS not creating folders/subfolders in Plumtree

    Hi,
We are in the process of developing CWS for LiveLink using EDK 5.0.2. We would like the crawler to be able to mirror Livelink's folder structure in Plumtree. But I believe due to Issue #21434 , the crawler cannot programmatically create the folder /sub-folders. We are able to crawl the documents that are in the folders/subfolders.Is there a programmatic work-around for this ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mihir

It's unnecessary to call back to the portal API for any of this information, and undesirable since it is relatively inefficient.
First regarding mirroring: you should simply have each instance of you IContainer objects return the array of immediate child objects. Then, the portal user simply needs to select "mirror folder hierarchy" and the portal will automatically mirror your underlying folder structure.
Secondly, regarding knowing the parent when getChildContainers is called: If you step back and look at how IContainerProvider and IContainer work together, this is easy:
The portal will call IContainerProvider.AttachToContainer() for every folder/container, passing in the "containerLocation" of your parent (or current) folder. At this point, you usually will (and probably should) create a new instance of your IContainer class, passing the "containerLocation" on to the initializer method of IContainer. IContainer should save this value in an instance variable inside the object.
Later on, the portal will call IContainer.getChildContainers() on this instance of IContainer. This method ought to look up the value of the instance variable and then use that to get access to the folder in the backend system. It should then be able to easily get a list of the immediate children of that folder, and return them in the array of ChildContainers.
I don't know that much about Livelink, but the "containerLocation" will be some value that allows your code to easily look up and get access to the underlying container in the backend system. For example, it may be a path, or an inode number, or some other key like that.
Anyway, once you understand how this works, you'll see that the portal then (eventually---exactly when and in what order is undefined) calls IContainerProvider.AttachToContainer() for each of the ChildContainers in the array, passing in the same "containerLocation" value as your code returned in the array, and the process continues recursively. (The very first top-level crawl gets its location from the crawler configuration, which is set by the user.)

  • Photos in Library module and after export look different than in Development module

    Hello,
    I experience a problem.
After I update photos in the Development module, the updates seem not to be shown in the Library module. And when I subsequently export to Flickr, Flickr is also showing the original photo, not the adapted one.
I noticed this the first time after making Blacks a bit deeper, causing a sunflower to become a deeper yellow. I thought that my adaptations were not applied in the Library module. After I checked with cranking down the Saturation all the way back (to almost black-and-white), that adaptation WAS applied in the Library view. So it had to be something else, causing the same color difference between the Library and Development modules.
When I switch from the Library module to the Development module, I see a slight delay in applying my changes, but they are applied. Before they are applied, I can see that the original photo is shown and that looks the same as in the Library module and on Flickr.
The photostrip on the bottom of the Lightroom screen also shows the original photos only, unless I go to the development module and select a photo (adaptations are applied in the photostrip after I select the photo, not before).
After I played a bit more in the Development module, I found something strange in the Camera Calibration menu of the Development module. The Adobe Profile (my default) caused an obvious color difference between the Library (less saturated) and the Development (more saturated) modules. The Camera Standard profile also showed a (very) slight difference, but I was unable to notice the differences using the other profiles.
So I was thinking (but it's only a guess), that the profiles are not applied in the Library view and on export, but they are in the Development module?
    I use Lightroom 5.6, Camera RAW 8.6.
Please help me, as this is very annoying. I currently cannot export my photos to Flickr or anywhere else, unless I overcompensate before exporting. And I really don't want to do that. My Lightroom photo is my perfect photo, and I want to keep it that way...
Many thanks in advance for any help,
    Peter

    Hi ssprengel,
Thanks for your reply. Let me react to each possibility you mention and provide some extra information.
    - "Check your Export / File Settings / Image Format and make sure they are set to JPG not Original". Done that, it's not on Original, but on jpg. This would not explain why I see the difference in the Library and Development modules, by the way. But better to know for sure.
    - "...the most likely thing that is wrong is your color-management on your computer is not working properly". It is a PC with Windows 7. I have been using Lightroom for maybe 6 years and I never had this problem before. The last time I changed my setup is more than a year ago and this problem only started to happen a short while ago (after the update to Lightroom 5.6? I'm not sure, but that's the only thing that has changed lately). I use a Spider to create a custom profile that is correct for my setup and do a regular update on the profile.
    - "what brand and model of monitor do you have?" I have an EIZO FlexScan S2411W and use that for a long time as well. I chose this brand of monitors for its good color reproduction and I have been happy with it for years now.
What I am not getting is why would all this show a difference between the Library and Development module? The only difference is the Lightroom software that is switching from one module to another, and that should deliver the same photo. I'm also stating in my first post that the differences are very noticeable using the Adobe Standard Camera Profile in the Development module. I have a feeling that the profile is part of the problem.

  • I uploaded pictures from a second camera and my iphoto created a second library, how do i get back to the first library?

I uploaded pictures from a second camera and my iphoto created a second library, how do i get back to the first library? Can anyone help?

I have no idea what you did or what happened - but I can assure you that loading from a different camera does not create a new library
So you need to supply information and someone here will assist you in sorting this out and figuring out what you really did
What version of iPhoto do you have? What version of the OS? Why do you think that a second library has been created? What do you see when you launch iPhoto with the optipon kep depressed and use the select library option? Where is your iPhoto library normally?
Anything else you can tell us that might help?

  • How do I create a new library in Itunes 11?

I have converted a bu7nch of songs to MP3 for my Andrtoid player. But they are all listed in my main library. I thought I would create a new library and name in MP3. But I don't see how to create a new library. I tried holding down the Option key and the Tunes icon until a window came up. The window came up but create a new library wasn't there. Plerase advise.

This is ridiculous! After trying 50 times holding down the Tunes icon and the option key, I finally got the suggested Library window. I created a new library. Then after trying 50 more times, I was able to open the alternative library. However, everyting in it was a copy of my original music in the original library.
Then you did not create a new library or you re-opend the original library.
A new library is gonna be empty.

When you created a new library, did you choose different location than the original?

    You've merely inadvertently hidden it.
Hiding/unhiding panels and modules is a little known feature of Lightroom which seems to put the fear of God into unsuspecting newbies who are not aware of the feature.
Right-click (CTRL Click on Mac) on the Module names and restore the check mark to Library.
