Lightroom 3 Slide Show Quality Issues Anyone?

I am experiencing slideshow quality issues with LR 3.2 using Canon 5D MKII 21 Mp RAW files. My Canon Digital Rebel 6 Mp RAW files produced high-quality slideshow PDFs using LR1 and LR2. The 5DMKII RAW files produce soft PDF imaging, regardless of preview rendering or slide show export settings in LR3, and I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING! I then went back and tried doing a LR3.2 slideshow PDF with my Digital Rebel 6Mp files and they are much higher resolution, regardless of the settings in LR 3.2 – The exact opposite of my 5DMKII slideshows. Go figure, the 6Mp images are superior in LR 3 slideshow than the 21Mp 5DMKII images!
I developed a simple work around that improves the quality of slideshow PDFs when using larger Mpixel file images:
1)      Select the images you want use for your slideshow and export them to JPEG, sRGB, 80-100% Quality, Resize to fit: 1536 x 1024 Resolution, NO Output Sharpening
2)      Import the 1536 x 1024 JPEG files and place them into a collection, sort their order, and add caption or title information if needed.
3)      Open the collection in Slideshow Module and select a template you like, or create your own custom template.
4)      Play the slideshow and let it create previews when prompted. Adjust slideshow template settings until happy with the layout.
5)      When finished with the slide show template, save as it as a ‘New Template’ for future use.
6)      Next select ‘Export PDF Slideshow,’ Quality 80-100, Width 1600, Height 1200, and Save.
7)      View the slideshow ‘Full Screen’ in PDF reader. It should have much higher resolution than normal slideshow export when using > 8 Mp files.
It takes a few extra steps, but not much additional time to create slideshows using this method.
Adobe must be aware of this problem, and probably does not apply sharpening to files >8Mp for PDF slideshow export to correct for over sharpening of Portrait images. This is just a guess! If you export RAW images to full size JPEGs and use these JPEG files to create a PDF slideshow, the Portrait images will look over-sharpened in Adobe reader! Using my work around process, the landscape and portrait images appear fairly uniform in sharpness, even though the portrait images are 2/3 the resolution of the portrait images ( 1024 x 683 versus 1536 x 1024). This is one of the issues Adobe needs to correct with the Slideshow Module PDF Export program module.
That must be hard to do! Let’s see, who is the developer of Acrobat and PDF format…Oh I forgot it’s ADOBE! As a 45-year veteran of the computer technology industry I've seen worse things, but this is very disappointing when you consider Lightroom is now a “mature” version 3 generation program! Yes, Separate slideshow programs are available, but why should you need to use one if all you want is “basic” slideshow capability!

After much trial and error I discovered using the 'Widescreen' template provided in the slideshow module provides very sharp imaging for PDF export. I haven't tried video export, but I would assume it is similar. I cannot explain why this is, because even when I change the guides from 0px to say 60px (i.e. no longer widescreen fill) the images are sharper than using any other template.
Try using 'Widescreen' template. Then try adjusting the guides using 'Widescreen’ template, and save as a new user template. I have no idea why it makes a difference, but it does!

  • What is problem with Lightroom 5 slide show??

This is a repeat question since it is impossible to get an answer from Adobe.  Possibly THE worst technical support of any product I have ever purchased!!  I upgraded to LR 5.  The slide show does not work.  I only get a black screen while the slides advance.  This was not a problem with LR4.  My saved slide shows do not work and new ones created in LR 5 don't work.  Adobe gave some ridiculous answer about the name  of the files with some sort of ID in them.  The answer made no sense.  I have changed nothing in my OS or my file structure.  Some people are experiencing this problem since there were several people posting the same issue.  Why can't we get a timely and credible answer from Adobe on this problem?  Anybody have a solution?  I went back to LR 4 and no issue with the saved slide shows.  Help please!!  LR 5.4 upgrade did not fix the problem either.
Come on Adobe fix your very expensive software product that I paid cash for!!
    Thank you!
    MAC OS 10.7.5

I posted this 8 months ago with NO responses.  Incompatibility of Lightroom 5 and Mac OS 10.7.5 on a MacPro. I bought Lightroom last week and struggled to get a slideshow to be exported. After many hours of testing I have concluded that the slideshow export delivers blank slides and blank video (though audio comes through) EXCEPT that the picture shows up during the transition ONLY. Please correct this problem. The problem does NOT occur on my MacBook Air with OS 10.8.5
I saw Rob Cole's suggestion:  what can be corrected in either the monitor profile or video driver?

  • IDVD Slide show audio issue

Slide shows created on iDVD look and sound great during preview, however after burning to disk, audio drops out for about 5 seconds after every 99 slides?  I have been told that this is a known issue with iDVD.  How can I correct this error??

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • IPhoto slide show; Photoshop issues with external keyboard

I have an external keyboard and an Apple Cinema Display connected as peripherals to my aluminum 15" PB. The keyboard is connected through the Apple Cinema Display. When I disconnect the keyboard to take my PB on the road, I cannot view a slide show in iPhoto nor can I use some photo editing tools in Photoshop. Any ideas as to how I resolve this issue?
Thanks; it took me quite a while to identify this problem.

I've asked the hosts to move this topic to the iDVD forum as that's where you'll get the best portential solutions to your questons.  It can be done in iDVD but alternatives have been discussed in the iDVD forum many times.

  • Premiere Elements 11 Slide Show Resolution Issue

Whenever I make a slide show using Premiere Elements 11, it significantly reduces the resolution of my pictures.  How do I fix this?

A workflow for you to explore....
Premiere Elements 11 presumed on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit in a NTSC setup
    1. Batch crop/resize your photos to 1920 x 1080 16:9
    2. Open Premiere Elements 11 its Expert workspace
Go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings
In Change Settings, set the project preset to
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p30 @29.97
In the new project dialog that you see immediately before closing out of that area, make sure to have a check
mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project".
    3. Back in the Expert workspace, use Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets to import your 100
photos into the project. (You can arrange your photos in order in a folder and then import the folder into the
project. When your drag that folder from Project Assets to the Timeline, the folder disappears and you have
all your photos on the Timeline in order. In your naming of the files, you might want to consider 0001 to 0100.
    4. When it comes to export...
For 856 x 480 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (when the video is stretch for display after encoding)
    Publish+Share
    Disc
    DVD disc
    with preset = NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD
For 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second - plays on Blu-ray or multimedia player, not DVD player
    Publish+Share
    Disc
AVCHD disc (this is going to be for DVD disc)
    with preset = H.264 1920 x 1080i NTSC Dolby
For 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second - plays on Blu-ray or multimedia player, not DVD player
    Publish+Share
    Disc
Blu-ray (this is going to be for Blu-ray disc)
    with preset = H.264 1920 x 1080i NTSC Dolby
The Premiere Elements 11 project preset which is the same for all of the outputs, gives the sharpest end product
photos at the DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc level. Photo clarity should be the major perk of what is described above.
    Please review and consider.

  • IDVD 08 slide show quality problems

I have tried several different ways to get a reasonably good quality slideshow through iDVD. In every case I end up with out of focus slides. Have tried the following:
1)Start in iDVD and import photos from iPhoto. Everything appears normal in this process. When I preview the slideshow before burning the photos are clear and sharp. But when I burn it the slides on the burned DVD are no longer sharp. They resemble that brief out-of-focus that you see when you first open a photo in iPhoto, which quickly sharpens on its own.
2)Did as in #1 above, but used "Save As Disc Image" and then played it with the internal iMAC DVD Player. Slides had again lost their sharpness.
3)Started with a slideshow in iPhoto and used "Send to iDVD." When I opened this slideshow in iDVD the photo sharpness was again lost.
    Please help.

    did you ever resolve this?

  • Timing of text box will not appear.  My text boxes stop working on slide 5 and they will not work for the remainder of the slide show.

Timing of text box not working.  I get the first few slides to work and then on slide 5 my text boxes will not appear.  And they do not appear for the rest of the slide show.   Help anyone.

Text caption is timed to appear at 2 seconds, but you have a click box at 0sec. Its duration is very short, which means that I cannot see if there is a pause. I suspect this click box is pausing at the end of its timeline, which is at 0.3secs and the Text caption at 2 seconds will not appear before the user has clicked on that click box. The timeline is the core of Captivate, learn at least how to read it.
Tiny Timeline Tidbits - Captivate blog
If you want the green text caption 'Click on...' to appear right at the beginning of the slide, you have to check its Timing accordion: set it to start at 0 secs instead of 2 secs and extend its duration to the 'rest of the slide'.
I don't know what is in the Group. That group and the HIghlight box will disappear at 3 seconds. Or maybe the action that is triggered by the Clickbox is different from 'Continue'?

  • Cannot export slide shows with iPhoto 9.6 and OS 10.10

    Hallo!
I upgraded to Yosemite last Friday. Everything seems to work fine only iPhoto 9.6 makes some troubles. I cannot export any slide shows. When I click on "export" the small window opens as always before, the first pic is shown in this window, after that the window disappears and nothing else happens. iPhoto doesn't crash, but it also doesn't export any slide shows.
Does anyone have an idea what the reason could be?
Thanks and best regards from Klosterneuburg/Austria
    Andy

Some folks have fixed this by reinstalling iPhoto:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Slide Show video exports from Macs to Windows

I work on a Mac.  When I export a Slide Show as Video anyone with a mac has no problem viewing it.  my windows friends however can't open it.  any suggestions?

Slideshows exported as video will play in the Adobe Media Player, Quicktime player and Windows Media player 12 (as well as quite a few other players, the best being VLC). The first two work on widows XP, Vista and 7 and OSX, the windows media player 12 on Windows Vista and 7. They must have a video player installed on their system to play the slideshows. All these are free for them to download. If they haven't got one of these players installed, other than suggesting that they do so, there is not a lot you can do...

  • Can't delete slide show from catalog in PSE 6

I am a fairly new user of PSE working in a Windows Vista environment.  When I right click on the thumbnail of an unwanted slideshow in PSE 6
and select "Delete from Catalog" I get the message "An error occurred while reading files or writing files to disk.  The disk may be full or there may be a problem with the source media".   My disk is NOT full.    The same thing happens when I try to do a full backup of my catalog.  It seems to complete the backup, but then gives me the same error message.
Also, I cannot go in and edit a slide show and then save it - the "SAVE" option is grayed out and I am forced to use the "SAVE AS" and save it under a different name thus creating a duplicate.
I am VERY FRUSTRATED as I have spent much valuable time creating these slide shows.  Can anyone help???

I didn't use it because of comments I've read by developers who've had problems with the Linked function.  You don't need to select the Linked function to edit an imported slide in Captivate, though, do you?  I thought unlinked slides were imported into the project library, and that you can edit them there.  Have I misunderstood how this works?

  • Has anyone had this issue. I created my song from itunes to garage band, took my iphotos to create a slide show and when I burned to idvd there are several pauses during playback?

    Hi
SlideShow in iDVD has a 99 photo limit - more than this and all sorts of error occures.
One can have more than one SlideShow on a DVD = X times 99 photos.
or assemble SlideShows in a movie editor (no limit at least not under 650 photos)
(only limit is Time in iDVD (movie time + MENU time --- 60 min or 120 min on SL-DVD and about twice on DL.-DVD )
    I use
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
As they will give a better quality than iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 can do.

  • Quality Issue Exporting RAW files in Lightroom 3

I have LR 3.6 and am experiencing quality degridation and tone alterations when exporting an edited RAW file to any folder in LR3 and then viewing the export in its new location in LR3. I am on a MAC and when I view the export in the file FINDER window, I see the image I expect to see in the LR viewer, all edits in tact!. But when viewed in lr it looks horrible! It is granular, the tone is altered and the color is over saturated. This seems to only happen with RAW files, exported to any format (Jpeg, Tiff, PSD, DNG etc) and/or color space (sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB). VERY FRUSTRATING.!!  Anyone found a solution to this problem?
Edited RAW Image :                                                                                                              Exported as JPG / sRGB:
    Thanx!

Correct. I am importing the exported photo back into LR for viewing as part of my workflow. It moves from a "Work in progess Fiie" to a "Processed Image File". And this new import into LR looks incorrect? Keep in mind I am editing a RAW image and then converting it to JPEG, TIFF or other universal format. Usually JPEG. But this problem occurs regardless of the format I choose. However, viewing it in the MAC file folder it looks fine. That however does not help me if I want to set up a print job or slide show through Lightroom. Any thoughts....

  • I want to make a copy of slide show create from my own photographs and with a an audio track behind them. I have carefully followed the iDVD tutorials and burnt the result to a disc but image quality is very poor. What is wrong?

I want to make a DVD of a slide-show with an audio track behind the photographs. I have carefully followed the iDVD video tutorials but the result is far from satisfactory. The quality of the images on the resulting DVD are blurred and indistict although the original photographs are of a very high quality. Where am I going wrong? Would I have better results from a different program than the inbuilt iDVD and if so so what programs have others found to be better? I should be grateful for some expert guidance.

    Hey Falcopebo,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Looks like you have image quality issues when using iDVD to burn.
iDVD 7.0: Burned DVD has interlacing, pixelation, or image quality issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4078
A standard DVD made by iDVD is made to the standard DVD resolution of 720 X 480, which is smaller than most HDTVs and monitors. When expanded to fit the entire screen or monitor, the image will distort slightly due to upscaling to fit the screen or monitor.
    Have a nice day,

  • Hello,  I am have problems with coruption of the photos in a slide show after burning the DVD in iDVD.  This coruption does not always appear when you preview the project.  I have slowed down the burn rate to 1X and kept the quality to professional.

I am having a great deal of problems with Data coruption in slide shows after I have burned a DVD in iDVD.  I have changed burn rate from best to 1X with no difference in the coruption.  I have the quality set to professional with no improvement.  The size of the project is near 3.95, so it should fit on a single layer burn.  Should I use either iMovie to create the slide show or "Photo to Movie"?  Also, can anyone comment on how I preserve the highest quality picture resolution with a slide show?  If I do use iMovie or Photo to Movie,  the file size should exceed the 4.2 size so, will I have to buy new DVD's which are capable to handle the double layer burn and upto 8 GB?  What DVD's are recommended?  Any preferred brand?  Are there problems with burning with double layer?  I read on this blog of numerous problems.

DVDs are LOW resolution by today's standards - only about 0.3 megapixels - so there is no way they your images on a TV set will look "High Definition".  See Preparing images for iDVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6675.html for recommendations on image sizes to use.  Using larger images won't give you better  quality, andf in some cases, will lower you image quality because  the Quicktime resizing that occurs isn't the best.

  • In PE11 the quality of the photos in the slide show are inferior to those in the catalogue.  Why?

I have been on the phone for a few hours to Adobe but they are stil investigating.  When I produce a slide show using Elements 11 the pictures are no way near as clear as they appear in the folders.  I just want to show my pictures without them looking like crap.  They were taken using the highest quality photo on the camera, which is a new Nikon and look great when viewing through Elements Organiser.  They also look amazing in the original source, eg My Pictures files.  When making slide show it asks the quality and I select high.
Does anyone else have a problem Or better still a solution????
Driving me nuts so any help appreciated.

DVD Standards are 720 x 480 NTSC, 720 x 576 PAL. So it doesn't matter how good the resolution is in your original images when you burn to DVD those resolutions will be reduced to one of the above.
So I suggest you follow the instructions earlier for File> Process Multiple Files and reduce the size in PSE to 720 x 576 (as you wanted a PAL DVD) and then create your slide show for further editing in PRE.
The reason for this suggestion is that it is generally considered in the PRE Community forum that PRE has a cruder image resizing algorithm than PSE.
If you think you may want to do Pan & Zoom on some of your images resize them to say 1000 pixels wide (with constrain proportions set).
You might find this PRE FAQ Entry helpful:
Why isn't my DVD as clear and detailed as my original footage?
