Lightroom 3 using disk space fast - on C - images & catalogue stored elsewhere

Everyt time I uselight room, particularly in combination with CS 5 to stitch a mosaic or panorama, the disk space on my C drive is reduced by several gigs. My images are stored on Drive D and the catalogue is stored on Drive P. I am talking about gigs at a time.
What is using the sapce. i've looked in temp folders and on every folder on the C drive and can find no large temp files. If LR 3 and CS 5 are doing this, should they not delete the files on exit and if the aren't where are they or what else is eating up my disk space.
Typically my stitches are made up of 10 to 40 files.
If anyone has an answer, please let me know.
Thanks
Greg

How do I find the Raw cache - how do change the setting
Ihave 130,000 images so they are on two different drives
Thanks

  • Music is on an external hard drive how to transfer to iPod without using disk space on MacBook

    Hi
I just brought a new iPod as my last one broke and I was wondering if there was a way to transfer my music currently stored on an external hard drive on to the iPod without having to have it using up disk space on my MacBook.
I was told in the Apple store by a sale guy that you can do this by creating a playlist in iTunes and dragging the music files in from the hard drive. He said it wouldn't be stored on the MacBook and the playlist could only be accessed (or music played on the macbook) when the hard drive was connected. But when we tried this it started transferring ALL of the music from the hard drive onto the main iTunes library and subsequently onto the disk space on the MacBook.
    Can someone help me :-)

The sales guy does not know what he's talking about...
Open iTunes preferences Advanced tab.  Uncheck the box for Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.  Click OK.
Now, when you add those songs to your iTunes library, iTunes will access the song files from the external drive, where they are currently located.  And you can sync them to your iPod.

  • Older version of windows using disk space

hi  i hope this is the right area.  i'm in need of some serious help.  my HP support assistant is telling me "a copy of an older version of windows is using significant hard disk space"  I don't know what to do.  it did the monthly tune-up & then came up with the error exclamation mark.  i've not gone from windows 7 to windows 8.  this is a windows 7, 64 bit; SP 1; 3.00 GB memory; Intel Celeron CPU.  unsure what else you may need.  the scan was done today 6-9-2013 at about 11 a.m.  can any body tell me what happened ?  I don't know how to fix this or what to do.  help me please.  [email protected]  thank you

    Hi,
You can check the C: drive (hidden normally) to see any Windows.old folder. This fle contains your Windows 7 information. It's there for you just in case you want to go back to Windows 7. You can remove it after happy with Windows 8.

  • Used disk space on new MacBook: mystery!

We've just (about 3 weeks ago) bought a new MacBook for my wife to use. I'm completely mystified about the amount of disk space that is already used, and wondered if there is some problem. Here are the figures, from Disk Utility:
Total Capacity of Toshiba disk: 55.9GB
    Macintosh HD capacity: 55.6GB
    Available space: 36.2GB
    Used: 19.4GB
I thought this looked like a lot of space already used, given that my we'd loaded on a modest amount of files from her old PC, almost all Word documents, very little pics, music etc. So I looked at how much space was being used by her home folder, the Applications folder and a couple of others:
    Home folder: 1.88GB
    Applications: 4.34GB
    Music: 11.2MB
    Pictures: 1.8MB
So, the total that we can account is not much over 6GB. What is using the other 13GB? Surely this can't be right?

Use whatsize to see what all is there.

Language files alone take up a couple of gig, garage band over 3 gig. With the OSX and all the extras that come with it it takes up around 16 gig.
With a clean install and getting rid of everything I didn't use or need I got it to less than 5 gig.

The true amount is the higher of the two, in this case.
Finder and Disk Utility will often show differing quantity of free space for the following reason.... If Time Machine is turned "on" in Lion, Time Machine will accumulate copies of changed information and store it as "Local Backups". This affords more "restore points" for your Time machine backups than would otherwise be kept if Time machine were to only create restoration points at each syncing to your backup drive. These "local Backups" are purged from the system at each backup sync, and the process of accumulation begins anew.
The operating system treats these local backup files as "low priority", and will be erased straight away, if ever during normal operation the user needs this disk space. Hence, some reports will not count these files at all in free space calculations, while others recognize the space as at least temporarily in use.
As well, Local Backups will stop accumulating is the free space drops below 10% of total. This is so that paging operations are completely unhindered by what might be a situation where erasure may be required before virtual memory could issue a write operation.
You can turn "local Backups" off via a terminal command, but it is hardly necessary. You can stop the accumulation and purge (erase) the files by simply by turing off Time Machine, and then using the "backup now" feature the next time you want to sync to your Time Machine backup drive. You simply will have no additional staged backup points other than the ones you make every time you sync. In other words, it will be just like it was in Snow Leopard, except that you have to "tell" Time Machine to sync, instead of TM doing it automatically just by hooking up the drive. Turning off Time machine doesn't disable TM, it simply turns off Local Backups, and automatic syncing upon backup disk mounting .

  • Relationship of Portal and Used  disk space

What is the relation ship between the portal and dataspace available in the particular system?

When J2EE server starts up it deploys portal applications (sap and custom developed, at times it involved extracting archive files) to the file system. If you don't have enough disk space either portal may not come up or the sever will come up but it will not function properly.
    Hope it clarifies.

  • Using disk utility to burn new image dvd's

Ok I just learned to burn DVD'd using Disk Utility and New image.
But I have come to halt in my burning with a new issue.
My issue is that I have a file that is 4.63GB. When I make a new image so that I can burn it, it increases the size of the file(Video TS) to 5.13GB. Making it to big for a 4.7GB DVD.
My question is is this normal for the new image file to increase in size, and is there a way for me to stop this from happening. Or can anyone give me any other suggestions. Please help.

Ok I have never tried that, as this is the first time it is suggested to me.
The reason i have been doing it via DU, is because this has been to only way to get it to play on
home DVD player and burn with the UDF setting. I was told to do it this way when I was trying to burn
copies of my nieces fifteens that was prof. done on a DVD.
I am trying to burn a copy of a movie so that it can be played on home dvd players. Yes I have done this before and the copies I burned via DU/new image, worked perfectly. And the ones I burned by just choosing file and burning it did not work.
So any help would be great.

  • Difference between used disk space and folder space

My startup harddrive (an SSD) info gives that 88 GB are used. If I open it in OS X and look at info for all the folders in it, their summed used space is 24GB. Thus 64 GB are used to unknown purpose and cannot be used.
This problem seems to appear from using migration assistant to transfer from my old mac to a slightly newer. Both running Yosemite 10.10.1. I had to shutdown the migration because the computers seemed so lose contact with each other and the end of the migration seemed to go on for ever.

  • Using disk space on net booted iMac

I have 20 iMacs i'm booting as diskless workstations. Can I mount the internal  drives of those machines on the server and use them for additional user storage? If so, what would be the best way to set that up?

The sales guy does not know what he's talking about...
Open iTunes preferences Advanced tab.  Uncheck the box for Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.  Click OK.
Now, when you add those songs to your iTunes library, iTunes will access the song files from the external drive, where they are currently located.  And you can sync them to your iPod.

  • Used disk space not showing up in finder

A friend has asked me to look into his external hard drive issue.
He got it back from a store that backed up his start-up drive to this external the other day to discover that there isn't any visible files on the drive. It does state that there is 100 gigs being used on the drive, the exact size of his back up, but there isn't one file or folder on the drive.
I've used tinkertools to see if there was any hidden files with no luck and I've also repaired and verified the permission.
Does anyone know why this is happening? I don't want to simply re-format without a clue why the 100 gigs isn't showing.

  • Used disk space keeps on changing

I launched activity monitor and under the disk usage tab the disk utilized keeps on changing! That that mean unknown files keep on being wrote on to the disk and deleting on its own? Or it is related to the number of programmes that are still active?

If so, won't we run into the risk of the hard drive being full and will have some problems in the future?

  • Using Disk Utility to restore an image stored on the network

    Hello --
I have a disk image, Image.dmg. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, Disk utility is able to restore this image from a firewire drive to an internal drive.
Image.dmg is also on a network share, hosted via AFP. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, select "Restore," and specify that share as the source:
    afp://172.28.40.XX/Image_Share/Image.dmg
    I get this message:
"You must authenticate in order to restore."
I imagine that the server would like for me to log on before giving me access to the share. However, Disk Utility doesn't provide me with an authentication dialog.
    Any ideas?

Can't really tell if you are trying to restore an image from a locally attached firewire drive or (as from the original poster of the message) from a remotely shared location. If you are restoring from a remote share location then have you tried:
    afp://username:[email protected]/Image_Share/Image.dmg
Replacing username and password with the account information which has access to that remote share location.
    Good luck,

  • Can I use iPhoto to view and edit images not stored in the iPhoto Library

    Hi folks,
I'm a newbie to Mac after 20+ years on PC...just switched 2 weeks ago....wish I'd done it years ago. Everythings so easy and fast...e.g. setup wireless broadband in 25 mins with no probs....and I have never done anything like that.
    Here's my Q.
I have a load of images, downloads and scans, of old manuscripts, authors etc. which I don't really want in my iPhoto library (which I would like to keep for actual photos. Is it possible to point iPhoto to another location (say in Documents) where it will let me view and edit these images without importing them into the library.
Alternatively can I view images as thumbnails in this other locations, and not as default file type icons.
    Hope this is plain,
    JP_MAC
    Imac G5 17" 1.9Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi jp-mac,
iPhoto 5 imports all images into it's own database. (this has changed with iPhoto 6 so you might want to check out iLife 6)
The other files you want to view but not have in the library...are they image files?
If so, you can view that folder as icons and then make the icons larger so you can see what they are.
To do this open the folder in question. click the first icon on top of View in the toolbar. This will make that folder contents view as icons
Now go all the way to the top of your screen and click on View>show view options.
Slide the icon size slider all the way to the right to view them larger. Also make sure you have the "show icon preview" checked.
This will work most of the time, but sometimes if you edit images in other applications they might not make icon previews, so check their preferences to make sure you have that checked.
There is also a little third party program that will do it for you.
    One is called Pic2Icon
    Pic2Icon
Another one is a contextual menu item called QuickImageCM.
    QuickImageCM
check out that page because there are some other useful contextual menu items that I use all the time.

  • Disk space concern

Thanks to all your help in getting me going in iMovie & iDVD. But..... with each VHS tape I read in, I am using disk space up fast. I do have a second 500 GB internal drive - can I make iMovie use this drive always, as a default? If so, how?
It looks like I created 3 different types of files for each tape I read in:
    stuff.dv
    stuff.dvdproj
stuff - under kind is says "iMovie project"
To be able to re-edit this tape, do I need to keep all three?
Can I just drag these files to the other internal drive?

forget for a second your expertisé on a Windows system... ;))
    a) in iM, choose under file/New Project... select your 2nd drive as location... boom!done...
    b) if you like to 'transfer' an iM project, switch to Finder, locate the project (probably in your 'Movies' folder....), it has a little 'star' on its icon... drag'n drop that into the new location... boom!done...
you can proceed same with iDVDproject...
    warning:
hopefully, that 2nd drive was formatted to 'MacOsExtended' before use... 'fat32/PC' does not work with iM/iDVD.....
