Lightroom 4.1 change Unused psd, jpg, xmp file in catalog?

I recently upgraded to LR 4.1 on a Win 7x64 machine. I noticed that a large number of jpg, psd and maybe some xmp files that are in my catalog had their last modified date set to the current date even though I did not edit them. Is this a possible issue with Lightroom 4.1? (I also upgraded to PS CS6 but did not edit the files in question).
Another note: They tend to be older files (1 or more years old) and from one physical drive (which happens to have the older files) and not another.
Thanks!
Message was edited by: waforum123 : changed to add that jpg file dates were also changed.

I think I may have figured this out. I deleted some keywords (from the keyword list). I think that Lightroom went through and re-wrote all the files that had those keywords in them thus generating a bunch of newly modifled jpg's, xmp's, psd's etc..

  • Can Lightroom recognize and import gps coordinates from xmp files?

    Hello guys
i have LR 4.2 and using Lion with a MBP.
I recently got gps4cam for my iphone to record gps coordinates.
Unfortunately i imported all the pix of my vacation to LR instead of importing them with the gp24cam app first
so Now i have the xmp files with gps coordinates in a separate file for each photo, but LR even though ca see that file, does not import any of the info on it
Is there a way to force LR to read and recognize those gps coordinates without having to delete all the pix of my vacation from LR, and re-import them to my mac before with the gps4cam app and afterwards import em in LR.?
i mean i cant believe there is not way to do that...
y LR can read and recognize gps coordinates if are on a picture, but cant recognize and attach those same coordinate to the original fine if they are in a separate xmp file?
    thanks for your input guys

    I would process differently:
Import your images as usual directly into LR, without the GPS data
copy the gpx-track from your external device to a storage sport from where LR can access it (my choice: same folder as my images).
Use either the map module to populate LR records with the GPS data (as stated by jim1403) or a plugin from Jeffrey Friedl for geo-encoding.
If you want to have the GPS data in your xmp, trigger the save from LR then (cmd s; may be auto-activated in your catalog settings)
Please note that several import problems have been reported by using other software before LR to update something. Do not let your GPS tracking software touch your images, especially if it offers to write into your proprietary raw files, at least not into your only copy of them... I consider this way too dangerous for my precious negatives. If it also creates xmp, then fine.
I am also a happy user of MotionX-GPS.
The real disdavantage of the LR command to read metadata from files is that it is all-or-nothing: it would be so convenient if one could choose which partial sort of metadata (EXIF, IPTC, development, GPS-coordinates, rating+caption+title) - but that would be a matter of a feature request, not for this forum.

  • My file was changed from psd to "5 file" and won't open

    Hi,
I just spent 2+ hours woking on a difficult mask, saving as I worked.
I left for dinner and closed down photoshop.
When I returned I couldn't open my file.  This message appeared:  could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document
The file is no longer a psd is a "5 file".
Any suggestions to what happened to my file and how can I get ps to open it?
    Thanks,

It sounds like you have Windows set to hide the extension of common file types, which means that a photoshop file called Pix03.psd will show up in Windows Explorer and in file open/save dialogs as Pix03 with the file type Photoshop file.  This is not desirable because it means you don't know what your files are actually named.  It also makes it harder to fix situations like this.
I would strongly suggest that you open Windows Explorer (My Computer icon, or WindowsStart+E), then go to Tools > Folder Options > View and UNcheck "Hide extensions for known file types."
Once you've done that, you will see your file names as Pix03.psd (the ".psd" is the "extension" that you need to see).  In Windows Explorer, or a File Open dialog with the criteria set to All Files (*.*), find the file you are having trouble with.  It will have a .5 extension, like Pix03.5.  Click on it once, wait a second, and click again.  This will let you rename it.  All that you need to change is the extension, so click at the end, backspace over the "5" and replace it with "psd".  That should make your photoshop file openable in Photoshop again.

  • Changes in xmp files not recognized n Lightroom

In my workflow i have setup for changes to be made to the xmp files by a program other than lightroom. In the previous version of Lightroom i had tested this, it worked fine. When i made a change to the xmp file, Lightroom recognized the change and displayed/rendered the image appropriately. Now, I am using version 2.2 and this is not happening. I see the option in th Metadat dropdown menu for "Read Metadata from File". If i click this it works. Is there an option for this to automatically happen that i am missing? If there isnt, why not? Also, I have noticed that Lightroom does not automatically write/update the xmp file if that option is enabled when using the develop module. Can anyone help me with this?

Read has never been automatic, and write is automatic but not instantly - it does it when time is available. You can use synchronize instead of read if you want to, but again, it's not automatic.

  • Develop Settings: jpg/xmp

    Hello,
first off some background, that I would appreciate corrections on, if I understood something wrong.
    a) Lightroom saves the settings it will apply to files in the database, but if the catagog option "Automatically write changes into XMP" is checked, LR will create a XMP file all files in which it stores the develop settings.
    b) This setting applys to all files (raw, DNG, JPG, TIFF, PSD) unless the setting "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files", in which case XMP files are not created for the named file-types, where the develop settings are saved into the metadata of the file itsself.
    And now my problem:
I always have the "Automatically write changes into XMP" settings turned on, so that on a database corruption the develop settings are directly associated with the files and can be re-imported to another database. I have imported some 15000 files (60% raw, 40% jpeg) and have started to develop them. All raw files have a XMP file associated with them and modifications to Keywords and develop Settings lead to the XMP files being changed and the raw files remain unchanged. But... for JPEGs LR saves all changes into JPEGs according to the "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files" setting, which was on for some reason or other. Since it would be so much easier for incremental backups if the JPGs were not modified and only XMPs were changed, I turned the "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files" setting off. But nothing changed. Still no XMP files are appearing despite changes to the files.
Is there any way to force LR to move the develop settings from within the JPGs to external XMP files?
    Thanks all!

    inforumman,
    Your questions:
    a) Correct, but saving to XMP does NOT replace saving in the Lr catalog. Save to XMP is in addition to saving in the catalog.
    b) The wording "saving the XMP" is a bit misleading, insofar as an XMP-file will be created only in case of Raw files, whereas with TIFFs, JPGs, PSDs the metadata (edits or other metadata) is written into (the header of) the image file - but NOT into the image pixels.
    c) As LRuser24 already said, it is not possible to have Lr write an XMP-file for JPGs, or for TIFFs, or for PSDs.

  • XMP file not loading

    Hi,
Using latest Lightrooms CC on two diff Mac OSX 10.10.2 – I was doing corrections on machine 1 via XMP file and the files dont load on machine 2. Interestingly I can see the changes perfectly on Bridge, but not in Lightrooms. Never had this problem before, all of sudden today they dont want to load up. Any suggests please?
    Regards
    Bini

    Biniman,
This behavior is correct and expected. Lightroom doesn't automtically read metadata from XMP files, instead it considers the Catalog to be the "plan of record."
However, LR will notify you when another program (in your case, a different instance of LR) makes changes to the metadata, by showing a small "exclamation mark" icon on the thumbnail border. If you hover over this thumbnail, you'll see the message that "the metadata was changed by another external program." Clicking will give you the option to overwrite the Catalog data with the changes on disk, or to overwrite the external data.
"Automatically write metadata changes to files" is a setting that is intended to be a one way street. It doesn't automatically read that metadata back, and there's no setting to cause it to do so.
    I hope this helps clarify!

  • XMP file missing

I've got a problem with a specific RAW file missing it's XMP data.
I had two images with the same name, one the CR2 and one a TIFF of the same file.  When I deleted the TIFF from the library, Lightroom's "feature" thoughtfully also removed the XMP file.
Lightroom recognised that the XMP file was missing and warned me, however telling it to save metadata to file still didn't create a new XMP file.  I then told Lightroom to "forget about this sidecar file", assuming this meant I could then recreate it.  Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case.  I have changed develop settings etc and clicked save to file and it's still not creating the XMP file, all the changes are only stored in the Library.
Any suggestions?  What can I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    James

I just did a test of deleting an .xmp file, and LR recreates the .xmp file, only after a change has been made to the file. I conclude that the other steps you took threw a wrench in the process.
If you want to be sure that this .xmp file is current, you can make an edit change (up exposure or anything, and return it) check the time stamp on the .xmp. You can also open in a text editor for specifics.

  • ACR not using .xmp files after 03/09/2011

I'm using ACR 6.4.1.145 and Bridge CS5 on a Windows 7 x64 Pro machine. Canon S95 and G12 CR2 files created before 04/09/2011 behave exactly as they should: changes aved in .xmp files are recognized and applied in Bridge thumbnails and when the image is re-opened in ACR.
Images created on 04/09/2011 and any later date (tested by altering the file dates) have their changes saved in an .xmp file, but this file is not applied to the thumbnail in Bridge, the Bridge thumbnail does not indicate the .xmp file exists, and the .xmp changes are not applied when the image is reopened unless the .xmp file is loaded manually.
I have purged the cache, restarted Bridge, and restarted Windows. I've moved the images to a different directory, then a different drive. I've loaded the images from the SD card several times now. The problem persists.
    All assistance appreciated.

    Thanks Thomas.
I am pretty sure the CR2 files don't contain any .xmp data. For one thing, the problem only occurs on my installation. If I use another computer, everything works as it should.
The problem has returned, however. I just tried to make changes in ACR to images created today, and although ACR saves the .xmp, it does not recognize it when I open the image again. I have to load the .xmp manually.
I will bet that tomorrow, the problem has gone away. That would make it somehow time/date dependent. More important to you and anyone else trying to help, it seems to happen only on my installation of CS5. Something has gotten corrupted, I think. If the problem persists, I will probably try a re-install, but I hate the patching proces that follows.

  • Fix for Camera Raw 5.7 ignoring .xmp files?

I have a problem, some people seem to have: From a certain date on, every sidecared .xmp gets completely ignored. Camera Raw as well as Bridge seem to ignore them. They get created, whether I open them with Bridge or CR. Someone suggested I could fix this problem by associating the CR2 Format with Bridge or Photoshop (CS4), it worked for a while... if I opened it with the Windows Explorer. Opening a CR2 with Bridge netted in the same result: .xmp gets created, but gets ignored by Bridge and Camera Raw. Now even that fix doesn't seem to work: Neither CR nor Bridge want to acknowledge the files.
Is there a fix for that I'm unaware of?
    €:
It seems I have found the problem: Someone mentioned it might have something to do with the timestamp of the files not being correct. I checked the date and time of my camera and realised I haven't changed the time, as Daylight-saving changed. Now the .xmp files read correctly. Perhaps that is some use for other people.
    €, Update2:
I checked several things: If the modified time of the file lies in the future (here 1hr.), Bridge and Camera Raw have a problem recognizing the .xmp cause it seemed to have been created before the Photo was shot/modified last time. I took the pictures at 01:05pm (the were timed at 02:05pm). CR and Bridge ignored all .xmp-files created before 2:05pm. After 02:05pm, everything worked fine again.

Good to hear that the matter is acknowledged.
I had such cases. I think it was the renaming of old files. Not sure.
Many things can go wrong. Whatever triggers it. It woulld be great to have the option (checkbox) to enforce the (re-)synchronisation of an existing xmp file with a given Raw and/or dng file.
    Best regards, Peter

  • "Sidecar file missing" - LR 1.1 can't read XMP files

I am getting a "sidecar file missing" icon for 150 out of 2,500 photos I've imported into Lightroom. The .XMP files are present in the same folders as the photographs, LR is just not recognizing them. It is just a few files from several different folders, but not all the files in any folder. The photos appear as "Missing Files" in the Library heading on the left panel in Library mode.
The metadata appears correctly saved in the LR cache. I have tried writing the metadata from the cache to the disk, but that does not help. If I try to import the files or folders again, Lightroom will not allow it saying that the images are already in the catalog.
Sometimes I add metadata (i.e. rankings) to the files in IMatch 3.6, but I seriously doubt that has anything to do with this problem.

Robert, thanks for the reply. I did find a work-around, eventually, but still haven't figured out what went wrong; I'm still investigating that.
    The work-around:
    1) I went to the Missing Files "filter" in Library mode.
    2) I selected the missing files
    3) I went to "Metadate/Write to File" and chose that.
    4) If Lightroom said that the metadata had been updated in a different program, I chose the "Overwrite" option.
    5) I then Removed the selected files from the Catalog (Alt-Backspace on my PC)
    6) I then Imported the folder(s) with the missing files again.
Lightroom then read the XMP files without a problem.
I previously had tried your suggestion of opening the file in Breezebrowser Pro, modifying the metadata and saving the file. This did not cause Lightroom to able to read/find the XMP files.
I printed out various versions of the XMP files from instances where Lightroom could and could not find the XMP file and am going to compare them when I get a chance.
    Thanks for your help

  • Turning on 'write xmp files' in LR 5.4 changed the modified date on my old raw and jpg files. Can i stop this?

On the advice of an article saying XMP sidecar files are a safer alternative to relying only on the catalog, I recently (June 16, 2014) turned on write XMP files. Now all my JPG and raw files have the same modified date of June 16, 2014, making it impossible to know which are the most recent files, etc.
Is it possible to change this behavior to only create these files for new images - or to stop this behavior?
I'm reverting to a backup of all my files and turning this option o ff for now.
    Thx

I assume your raws are in DNG format? If xmp is in sidecar, it won't change raw file date.
Anyway, saving xmp does not change any dates in Lightroom, so you should still be able to sort by edit time or capture time...
But if you want control, you have to save manually instead of automatically.
    Two things that might help:
    1. Filter based on metadata status.
    2. robcole.com - DNGPreviewUpdater

  • Lightroom changes file date (build and changeing date) by jpg files

    Hallo
I am using Lightroom on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Problem is that Lightroom changes both dates of the file (the date when the file was build and the date when you have made changings on the file) when i save the Metadates to the file.
This happens only by jpg files. By raw / xmp files is the date of the raw file not changed, the both dates of the xmp are also changed like by jpg.
I want not to change the time when the file was build. So that i can see in the Finder / Explorer when the file was build ( Photo taken).
How can I solve this Problem.
    Thanks for Help

Do not save the metadata to the files. It's quite unnecessary to do so, but of course, you should have full backups of the images and the catalog(s) [.lrcat].

  • Unable to make changes to a jpg file and then save it without the program trying to change it to a psd [was: What a Pile of Crap!]

Can't even make changes to a jpg file and then save it without the program trying to change it to a psd!!!!!  No wonder nobody like Adobe anymore.

Do you mean that PSD comes as a default option or that JPEG is not available no matter what?
Did you add a layer?  Did you change the bit depth?  Did you add transparency?   The JPEG format does not support layers, nor 16-bit images, nor transparency.

  • Why does jpg change to .psd

I have had a cropped (or otherwise edited) picture seemingly randomly changed from a jpg to psd and now it is shown in Organizer with a yellow symbol in the corner. I cannot access the picture, nor can PS find it (it's right there dangit). How can I recover said pics?

I think I know what happened. Somehow the picture was saved to a temp file and was probably deleted by a security scan, set to empty temps and other items at the designated intervals.  Remembered I emailed the pic and found it in my sent folder. Copied it from there.
Not a totally important picture, one of family interest.  I would not have thought to look at the show properties, you have furthered this rookies training. Thanks

  • PS CS4, refuses to save one file type .psd to another file type .jpg. How to resolve? Desperate!

I open a .psd file, make changes to eliminate layers and reduce the file size to then save as a smaller .jpg file.  However, when the drop down window pops up to select what file extension I would choose, it immediately flashes closed with out time to make a selection .jpg or otherwise.  No matter how many times I try to "beat" the window and make a selection, it's faster than me and it closes.  It refuses to allow me to change the file type extension.  This problem seems to have developed after downloading recent updates to the program.  It's preventing me from doing my work.  I need help fast.  Can anyone help?  I've already tried deleting the program from my system and reloading it, but the problem didn't go away.
Other minor glitch happened at the same time.  Any file or group of files opened now fill the screen and are anchored together.  I have to go to the menu every time and select 'Float all Windows', and if any other file is opened during the same work session, all previous files will become full screen images again and anchor themselves together again, so need to go to the menu and select 'Float all Windows' AGAIN.  It's a real pain.  I've tried looking in the preferences and didn't find a solution to the problem.  Anyone have any suggestions?  This problem is minor thought, compared to the first one listed which has crippled me moving forward in my work.
Thanks to anyone who can help....
