Lightroom 4.2 very poor CPU usage

Lightroom 4.2 seems reasonably fast when I work with it, whether it's browsing photos or adjusting sliders, although it takes several seconds to go into develop mode after launching it for the first time.
But now I'm exporting 1498 photos that are 5184 by 3456 and it's taking quite a while, I would say about an hour or more. This is on a brand new system I just assembled consisting of an i7 3930k with 32 GB of RAM that flies with every other program. While exporting this batch I opened Task Manager and I noticed that CPU usage never goes to 100%, not even close. There are peaks of 50%, but on average it must be in the 20s:
This is very disappointing on a CPU that has 6 physical cores and 12 logical cores with hyperthreading at 3.2 with turbo at 3.8 Ghz. The batch is exporting these photos from one SATA 6 drive to another SATA 6 drive, and the HD LED barely lights up, so I know the hard drives are not the bottleneck. So I'm wondering, is Lightroom 4.2 really that bad when it comes to taking advantage of the CPU cores? Is there anything I can do to make it use the CPU more?
Thanks,
Sebastian

Some people are finding that turning off hyperthreading is helping, so I'd be interested to know if that makes a difference for you.
I would also split the export into 2 or 3 exports, which can run concurrently, which should max out your CPU.  They don't max it out by default in order to let you carry on working while the export runs in the background.
I would prefer not to turn off hyperthreading, since part of the reason I spent $1300 in a system upgrade was to get that feature and it's not practical. Even if it worked, I would have to reboot every time I need to do a long export, go into the BIOS, turn off HT, do the export, reboot, turn it back on. Too much trouble.
As for running parallel exports, it doesn't really help much. I tried cutting this export roughly in half and export at the same time. Here you can see the result:
At times it went up to 60% or so, but the gain in time is negligible. I ran the two exports more or less at the same time, the second one several seconds later because I had to select the rest of the photos, open the export dialog, click OK and then wait for the "Prepare for export" progress dialog to finish, after which it started exporting. So that export took 31 mins. And this is because I went into the Asus software that comes with the motherboard and set it to do an automatic overclock, which took quite a while but it sped up the system considerably. Before doing that it was taking close to an hour.
After that, I shift deleted all the exported files, went into Lightroom, selected all the pictures in the folder and exported using exactly the same settings, jpeg, convert to sRGB, no resize and limit of 7000kb. So the gain from doing a parallel export is only 3 minutes. Evidently, Lightroom is not well designed to take advantage of all the hardware at its disposal, even if it is a superb photo processing program.

  • Lightroom Mobile Sync - Extremely High CPU Usage/Sync Process Causes LR To Lag

Since my other thread doesn't seem to be getting any responses, I'm pasting what I've found here. Please keep in mind I am not a beginner with Lightroom and consider myself very familiar with Lightroom's features excluding the new mobile sync.
    1st message:
I'm on Lr 5.5 and using the 30 day trial of Adobe CC to try syncing one collection of slight more than 1000 images. Despite already having generated the Smart Previews, I can see my CPU crunching through image after image (the rolling hills pattern in the task manager) while doing the sync. I was assuming, since I already created the Smart Previews, that the sync of this collection would begin immediately and be done by simply uploading all of the existing Smart Previews. The Smart Previews folder of the catalog is 871MB and has stayed the same despite the CPU obviously doing *something*. As it is now, the sync progress is incredibly slow, almost at a pace like it's actually exporting full-res JPGs from the RAW images (as a comparison only, I know this should not be what it's actually doing).
Another side effect of this is that I'm basically unable to use my computer for other tasks due to the high CPU utilization.
    Win 7 x64 / Lightroom 5.5
    Intel i5 2500k OC'd 4.5GHz
    16GB RAM
SSD for OS, separate SSD for working catalog and files
    2nd message:
As a follow up, now Lightroom thinks all 1026 photos are synced (as shown in "All Sync Photographs" portion of the Catalog though all images after the 832nd image show the sync icon per image stuck at "Building Previews for Lightroom Mobile" and the status at the top left corner has been stuck at "Syncing 194 photos" for over 12 hours. Is there no option to force another sync via Lightroom Desktop and also force the iOS app to manually refresh (perhaps by pulling down on the collections view, like refreshing via the Mail app)?
    3rd message:
One more update, I went into Preferences and deleted all mobile data, which automatically signed me out of Adobe CC and then I signed back in. Please keep in mind the Smart Previews were long generated before even starting the trial, and I also manually generated them again (it ran through quickly since it found they were already generated) many times. Now that I'm re-syncing my collection of 1026 images, I can clearly see Lightroom using the CPU to regenerate the Smart Previews which already exist. I have no idea why it's doing this except that it's making the process of uploading the Smart Previews extremely slow. I hope this time around it will at least sync all 1026 images to the cloud.
    4th message:
All 1026 images synced just fine and I could run through my culling workflow on the iPad/iPhone perfectly. Now I'm on a new catalog (my current workflow unfortunately uses one catalog per event) and I see the same problem: Smart Previews already generated but when syncing, Lightroom seems to re-generate them again anyway (or take up a lot of CPU simply to upload the existing Smart Previews). Can anyone else chime in on what their CPU utilization is like during the sync process when Smart Previews are already created?
    New information:
Now I'm editing a catalog of images that is synced to Lightroom Mobile and notice that my workflow has gotten even slower between photos (relative to what it was before, this is not a discussion about how fast/slow LR should perform). Obviously Lightroom is syncing the edited settings to the cloud, but I can see my CPU running intensively (all 4 cores) on every image I edit and the CPU utilization graph looks different than before I started using LR mobile sync. It still feels like every change isn't simply syncing an SQLite database change but re-generating a Smart Preview to go with it (I'm not saying this is definitely what's happening, but something is intensively using the CPU that wasn't prior to using LR Mobile).
For example: I only update the tint +5 on an image. I see the CPU spike up to around 30-40%, then falls back down, then back up to 100%, then back down to another smaller spike while Lightroom says "Syncing 1 photo".  I've attached a screenshot of my CPU graph when doing this edit on just one image. During this entire time, if I try to move onto edit another image, the program is noticeably slower to respond than it was prior to using LR mobile, due to the fact that there appear to be much more CPU intensive tasks running to sync the previous edit. This is proven by un-syncing the collection and immediately the lag goes away.
I'd be happy to test/try anything you have in mind, because it's my understanding that re-syncing photos that are edited that are already in the cloud should be simply updating the database file rather than require regenerating any Smart Previews or other image data. If indeed that's what it should be doing, then some other portion of LR is causing massive CPU usage. If this continues, I will probably not choose to proceed with a subscription despite the fact that i think LR mobile adds a lot of value and boosts my workflow significantly if it wasn't causing the program to lag so badly in the process.
I know this message was incredibly long and probably tedious to read through so thanks in advance to anyone who gets through it
    -Jeff

Thanks for reporting. Just passed  along your info to some of our devs. One of the things that needs to be created (beside smart previews) during an initial sync are thumbnails + previews for the LrM app - Guido
    Hi Guido,
Thanks for pointing this out. I realized the same thing when I tried syncing a collection for offline mode and found out the required space sounded more like Previews + Smart Previews rather than just the Smart Previews.
    greule wrote:
Hi Jeff, are your images particularly large or do you make a lot of changes which you save to the original file as part of your workflow?
The CPU usage is almost certainly from us uploading JPEG previews not the Smart Previews - particularly during develop edits as these force new JPEG previews to be sent from Lightroom desktop, but would not force new Smart Previews (unless the develop edits are modifying the original file making us think the Smart Preview is out of date) to be sent.
    Guido
My images are full-resolution ~22mp Canon 5D Mark III RAW files so they're fairly large. Even if I only make one basic change such as exposure changes, I saw the issue. By "save to the original file" I'm assuming metadata changes such as timestamps, otherwise edits to the images aren't actually written to the original file. I'm only doing develop module edits so I shouldn't be touching the original file at all at this point in my workflow.
I think it makes sense now that you mention that new JPEG previews need to be generated and sent to the cloud due to updated develop edits. My concern is that this seems to be done in real-time as opposed to how Lightroom Desktop works (which is to render a new Standard Preview or 1:1 Preview on demand, which means only one is being rendered at any given time while viewing it in Loupe View or possibly 2 in Compare View). If I edit, for example, 10 images quickly in a row, once the sync kicks in a few seconds later, editing the 11th image is severely hindered due to the previous 10 images' JPEG previews being rendered and sync'd to the cloud (I'm assuming the upload portion doesn't take much CPU, but the JPEG render will utilize CPU resources to the fullest if it can). Rendering Standard/1:1 Previews locally and being able to walk away while the process finishes works because it is at the start of my workflow, but having to deal with on-the-fly preview rendering while I'm editing greatly impacts my ability to edit. Perhaps there can be a way to limit max CPU utilization for background sync tasks?
It may help to know that I'm running a dual-monitor setup, with Lightroom on a 27" 2560x1440 display maximized to fit the display (2nd display not running LR's 2nd monitor). Since I'm using a retina iPad, the optimal Standard Previews resolution should be the same at 2880 pixels.
    Thanks again for the help!

  • Macbook getting how with very little cpu usage

So my macbook pro with retina display is getting oddly hot.
I run a few applications, about 5 or so, and the CPU reached about 95C, then was pulled back by the fans to 80C. I then played 1 game, (and left other aps open), and the CPU reached 101c. I've then closed everything but two aps, an IRC client, and safari with 6 tabs.
    Current CPU usage:
    16 - 19%
    CPU temps:
    Average is 80C
    Fan speed:
    3710 rpm
Program I'm using to record temps:
    Temperature Guage
I've also let the vents on the side of the computer containing the cpu/gfx chip be suspended in air so they aren't onstructed by anything.
Is there something wrong with my MBP? Apple's tests said everything was alright but it's getting VERY hot compared to many stories I've seen across the net.

    ThePilotGuy wrote:
Also, when I restart the comp, should the temps stay the same, even after idling for a minute? They do for me.
Also, restarted my comp, same dock issue persists.
EDIT: Also, when I restart my computer, the background always changes to this grey backgroundless color and I have to re-set it.
And, when I log in, the screen quickly flashes white then takes maybe 5 to 9 secs to login. It hasn't done this until recently.
EDITEDIT: When the background is colorless, the bar at the top of the screen is just black, I cna't read any of the text.
The white flash is normal. That's the end of launchd process and the start of the loginwindow process.
The delay in the appearance of the loginscreen indicates that either
    1. you're running something in
 > System Preferences.. Users & Groups | Login Items
that is causing the problem every time you bootup and login. If either Skype or Limechat are in that list, get them out. Ideally, get everything out of that list.
    or
    2. if there's nothing in your Login Items, you may have a corrupt plist file. Force the system to make a new one by running this command in Terminal (beware that it will reset your Dock to default prefs, so if you've added any other icons to the Dock you'll have to do that again afterwards):
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
press 'return' on the keyboard and restart the mac.

  • Very high cpu usage - no programs running!!

    Hi guys
Was really hoping someone could help me with this problem.
There is a constant 50-60% cpu usage and the laptop is getting superhot 80c and obviously sending the fan into overkill 6000rpm+.
But what is confusing is that is like this all the time!! even when there are no programs running at all!!
and even worse in activity monitor there is no process which can account for that cpu activity/heat. nothing is clocking in at more than 9%.
I have done repair permissions, used onyx to clean up the system, use clean my mac, rebuilt the index in spotlight and nothing works. the second you switch on and log on the problems start.
I cant think of anything else to do apart from doing a complete reinstall which is obviously something i would like to do avoid so any ideas to why this is happening? and how is it possible there can be cpu activity that is not accounted for?
thanks for any help/advice you guys can provide

Plus sorry should have written this on first msg but the most recent change i did to my computer before the problems started was change the Icons for Finder. I have changed it back, was using candybar but still no change. anyway to complete reset icons for finder without having to reinstall?

  • Chromium + Flash + Pandora = very high CPU usage

I know Pandora is far from the most efficient software out there, but in Chromium it takes roughly 1.6 GHz of CPU cycles, compared to 260 MHz in Firefox.  Same version of Flash (64 bit preview).  I was hoping to switch from Firefox to Chromium as it seems to be faster overall, but draining my laptop's battery like this is a show-stopper.

The almost exact 100 wakeups per second makes me wonder if Pandora tries to redraw constantly but gets throttled to 100 FPS in Firefox.
Edit: Okay, I guess I should have done a little more research before posting here; seems to be a known problem with Pandora and Chromium (on Windows and Mac also (!)):

  • Very poor CPU and GPU performance when disconnected from AC

I've been looking for a similar topic here but after a while I didn't find anything similar.
I know when the Macbook Pro is running just with the battery the performance and speed is lower than plugged to the AC, but in my case the difference is ridiculous. I can't use the Macbook Pro unplugged to do my work with apps like InDesign and Illustrator and I have a lot of trouble viewing mid to hi res videos.
I've been running Xbench tests and when the AC is plugged, my results are:
    Results 121.03
    System Info
    Xbench Version 1.3
    System Version 10.5.6 (9G55)
    Physical RAM 2048 MB
    Model MacBookPro4,1
    Drive Type Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00
    CPU Test 126.56
    Thread Test 275.13
    Memory Test 162.74
    Quartz Graphics Test 191.30
    OpenGL Graphics Test 168.71
    User Interface Test 277.31
    Disk Test 39.38
But when I'm using just the battery:
    Results 59.58
    System Info
    Xbench Version 1.3
    System Version 10.5.6 (9G55)
    Physical RAM 2048 MB
    Model MacBookPro4,1
    Drive Type Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00
    CPU Test 52.46
    Thread Test 108.53

    Quartz Graphics Test 61.50
    OpenGL Graphics Test 54.07
    User Interface Test 61.99
    Disk Test 40.04
The difference between the CPU test is like 60% lower performance and in the Quartz and OpenGL tests are like 70% lower performance!
I think something is wrong here, is it normal?

    +is it normal?+
I don't think so, here's my results for comparison; basically not much difference at all.
    On Power Supply
    Results 118.55
    System Info
    Xbench Version 1.3
    System Version 10.5.6 (9G55)
    Physical RAM 4096 MB
    Model MacBookPro5,1

    Quartz Graphics Test 165.82
    OpenGL Graphics Test 145.97

    On Battery
    Results 117.13
    System Info
    Xbench Version 1.3
    System Version 10.5.6 (9G55)
    Physical RAM 4096 MB
    Model MacBookPro5,1
    Drive Type Hitachi HTS543225L9SA02

    Quartz Graphics Test 145.97
    OpenGL Graphics Test 129.50
    User Interface Test 295.27
    Disk Test 39.09
If you remove the battery and only run on MagSafe power then it will only use one CPU and you'd see a major drop in performance, but you're seeing this result with no power and battery only it's very strange.

  • VERY LOW cpu usage & memory, fans incessantly spinning / system very slow

Just did a clean install of Mac OSX 10.8 3 days ago to try and deal with this fan problem.
    Updated to 10.8.4 today.
My Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM was running very hot with fans spinning constantly and all that with nothing going on. But it wasn't slow.
I had tried everything I could find to as afr as SMC resets and things like that.
Now, a week after the clean install, the system is superslow, the fans come on for no apparenmt reason for an hour and then go off. Off, on, off on. Nonstop.
And forget about all my files on my external drives, I can't get anything off of them mosty of the time.
Error -2, Error -50, Error -36, Error -3, etc... etc...
My free RAM hasn't gone below 10GB free but I'm getting page/out s a bunch and out of nowwhere it will grind to a halt for no reason. I've run test after test to check teh hardware, to no avail...
Also Archive.app keeps saying that .Zip restore (from Backblaze)  files I'm downloading are damaged and can't be opened.
Something very wrong and I'm assuming hardware, but can't find anything. Any advice?

A lot of this 10.8.4 coreaudio bug, so Included a few more...

  • Lightroom 5 prints very poor compared to Photoshop CC

I have an Imac running Maverick and an Epson 3880.  I have calibrated my monitor, my printer and my paper with a ColorMunki.  I use ProPhoto for all apps.  All settings the same in both PS and LR.
If I print an image in LR 5 and then export the same image to PS and print it (all settings the same), the PS image is almost spot on.  The LR5 image is very bad, being much darker and bluer.
Can anyone help me with this?  thanks.
    Bill

This sounds like colour control issues.
From LR Print Module, with it ready to print, open the printer settings (from Page-Setup in the LR print module), then make sure that you printer is set to do NOT colour control.  Note that this setting is (or can be) specific to each printing template.

  • DW CS3 very high CPU usage

Just installed DW CS3, installation went normally without any
problems. However when I start the program, DreamWeaver.exe
constantly occupies between 80 and 100% of the CPU resources - even
    when minimized.
The same happens on 2 XP SP2 systems, one 3GHz 1GB RAM where
    I have DW8 installed, and one 1.7GHz dual-core 2GB RAM laptop with
a fresh Windows installation and no other Adobe/Macromedia stuff
    installed.
I tried to repair the installation, to uninstall / reinstall
(with a reboot after every operation) , but the problem remains.
Is this a known issue, probably with a known fix?
    Thanks

Glad to hear you figured it out. Can you explain in more
    detail exactly
what you did? Is this the Win XP setting you're talking
    about?:

"You can view the DEP configuration for your computer in

    2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance, click
    Settings.
    3. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Data

    4. Note if Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and

If I go to the Data Execution Prevention tab, it's set to
    "Turn on DEP for
essential Windows programs and services only", which I'm
    assuming is the
default setting, since I haven't touched this before. What
    was your DEP set

  • Since 10.4.6 Update: "ATSServer" with high CPU-usage when opening PDFs

Since I've updated to 10.4.6 my system is very slow when I open PDFs (in "Preview" or "Acrobat").
This is caused by the process "ATSServer" which goes through every file in "~/Library/Fonts" (I have over 4.800 files there - but just a view are activated by "FontBook") and so it takes very high CPU-usage.
I didn't have this problem bevore the update and I didn't make any changes on my font settings.
I've cleaned the font cache, but it doesn't help.
    Any ideas?
    Ciao

    PowerBook G4 17'' 1.67 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I haven't noticed any change myself, Dan, but I have the 2 GHz model.
One thing I HAVE noticed though after OS updates is that they can often result in a fair amount of file and free space fragmentation immediately after installation. OSX's routines will deal with fragmentation of small files , but not of large ones (over 20 Meg), and it won't deal very effectively with free space fragmentation. If your HD is getting full this can cause significant slowdowns, especially where video is involved.
You should also run DiskUtility and check for any directory and permissions issues.
    Cheers

  • High CPU Usage On client application when upgrade remote SQL database

    Hi,
Is anyone here encountered very high CPU usage after upgraded the database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012? Following describes my issue.
I have my client application running on Windows 7 that access to central database (SQL 2005) on Windows server 2003 using ODBC connection, this client application basically query data and perform data insert and update. There are a number of this similar
    clients connected to the database.
Due to slowness of the database server, company decided to upgrade the database server to SQL 2012 and also new hardware runing Windows Server 2012. There is no change on the client application and client hardware and the client application still using the
same ODBC connection to query, insert or update the new database server.
The problem I am now experiencing now is that my client PC where my client application running the CPU usage is very high almost hitting 100% when accessing to the central database. I am also noticed this program lsass.exe that utilized almost 40-50% of
the CPU time when client application accessing the central database.
Is anyone here know, why client PC CPU usage 100% when access to upgraded SQL 2012 database? What is lsass.exe program doing, it only appear when accessing to database server. How to reduce the CPU usage on client?
    Thanks.
    Chee Wee.

    Hello,
After upgrading, please rebuild indexes and update statistics on the databases.

    Configure maxdop on the instance.

If the above does not solve the issue, let us know.
    Hope this helps.

  • High cpu usage for garbage collection (uptime vs total gc time)

    Hi Team,
We have a very high cpu usage issue in the production.
When we restart the server, the cpu idle time would be around 95% and it comes down as days goes by. Today idle cpu is 30% and it is just 6th day after the server restart.
    Environemnt details:
    Jrockit version:
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-b04)
BEA WebLogic JRockit(TM) 1.4.2_05 JVM R24.4.0-1 (build ari-38120-20041118-1131-linux-ia32, Native Threads, GC strategy: parallel)
Gc Algorithm: JRockit Garbage Collection System currently running strategy: Single generational, parallel mark, parallel sweep
    Number Of Processors: 4
    Max Heap Size: 1073741824
    Total Garbage Collection Time: 21:43:56.5
    Uptime: 114:33:4.1
    Total Garbage Collection Count: 420872
    Total Number Of Threads: 198
    Number Of Daemon Threads: 191
Can you guys please tell me what would be problem in the server which causing the high cpu usage?
One more thing I would like to know is that why the total number of threads is 198 when we specified the Executor pool size as 25? I agree that weblogic would create some threads for its maintenance but around 160 threads!!! something is wrong I guess.
    Santhosh.

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem, but haven't been able to resolve it yet. Troubleshooting is made even harder by the fact that this is only happening on our production server, and I've been unable to reproduce it in the lab.
I'll post whatever findings I have and hopefully we'll be able to find a solution with the help of BEA engineers.
In my case, I have a stand-alone Tomcat server that runs fine for about 1-2 days, and then the JVM suddenly starts using more CPU, and as a result, the server load shoots up (normal CPU utilization is ~5% but eventually goes up to ~95%; load goes from 0.1 to 4+).
What I have found so far is that this corresponds to increased GC activity.
Let me list my environment specs before I proceed, though:
    CPU: Dual Xeon 3.06GHz
    RAM: 2GB
    OS: RHEL4.4 (2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp)
    JVM build 1.5.0_03-b07 (BEA JRockit(R) (build dra-45238-20050523-2008-linux-ia32, R25.2.0-28))
    Tomcat version 5.5.12
    JAVA_OPTS="-Xms768m -Xmx768m -XXtlasize16k -XXlargeobjectlimit16k -Xverbose:memory,cpuinfo -Xverboselog:/var/log/tomcat5/jvm.log -Xverbosetimestamp"
Here are excerpts from my verbose log (I'm getting some HT warning, not sure if that's a problem):

So, I'm running with the default GC strategy which lets the GC pick the most suitable approach (single space or generational). It seems to switch to generational almost immediately and runs well - most GC runs are in the nursery, and only once in a while it goes through the older space.
Now, if you look at [Sun Oct 22 02:50:27 2006], that's when everything changes. GC starts running every second (later on it's running 3 times a second) doing huge sweeps. It never goes through the nursery again, although the strategy is still generational.
It's all downhill from this point on, and it's a matter of hours (maybe a day) before we restart the server.
I guess my only question is: What would cause such GC behavior?
    I would appreciate your ideas/comments!
    Thanks,
    Tenyo

  • High cpu usage when using flash player

    Hi,
Just updated to Mavericks and now I'm having very high cpu usage while watching streams using flash player. CPU usage is somewhere around 110% and after a moment the stream starts to lag and fps is slowing down. I also tried using Chrome but with no difference. Flash player is the newest version 11.9.900.117.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

i think its the best to hit the report a problem button in safari, since its appears since i updated safari to 5.1.4! maybe they make a additional update

  • High CPU usage - Rapid Battery Drain - Running HOT

    Looking for help.. PLEASE!
    Z10 - Model STL100-3 Software release 10.2.1.2179
    Symptoms;
Occasionally, and for no apparent reason, I notice my Z10 getting hot in my pocket. I run the device monitor App and see a very high CPU usage, which consequently drains the batter very quickly.
I've tried all the solutions from every support group thread and blog. And I mean ALL!
    Pulling the battery
    Replaced the battery
    Removed the SIM
    Deleted G Mail
Removed all 3rd party Apps (2)
    Stopped email sync
    Stopped calendar sync
    Turned off all radio
    Turned Off Wi-Fi
Let it sit for hours, even days to let it finish doing whatever its trying to do
    Etc Etc Etc.
Finally, I called BB support, they wanted $50 to talk to someone. I told them the issue, they said the device is bad and must be replaced. I said its software related!! They said.. no, its a hardware issue. Device is under warranty and they want me to just go get a new one. I don't want a new one, I want a fix! Stop the waste of BB $
    Temporary solution
Eventually, I decided I would do a restore, back to the factory settings, and here's when I found something
I run BB Link, connect the device, do a back-up... and LOW AND BEHOLD.. this fixes the high CPU usage and the device runs great, very cool, low cpu and extremely long battery life.
Sadly! .. this problem reoccurs, after a few days, sometimes after a couple of weeks and just out of the blue.
I can force this fault to occur, simply by doing a restart of the device. Sure enough, it will run hot, use all the cpu and I will have to do a back-up to get it to settle down again. I've tried to wait for the so called 'indexing' to finish, but it never stops running with high cpu and doesn't help.
Can any one tell me whats happening and how to make this a permanent fix?
There are hundreds if not thousands of people having very similar issues, and many different methods to fix it. Its my belief that there is an underlying bigger problem that relates to all these differing fixes, but as yet.. I cant find it and none of these fixes work for me. For now... I will keep doing the occasional back-up and hope I get a response that can help.
Thanks to all that read this.

The heat may be normal. After a little water damage incident, which I repaired, I disassembled my Z10 the find a small heat sink will thermal compound. This helps dissipate heat efficiently. I found a large number of air bubbles and possibly a large air pocket by the way the paste stuck to both sides. I removed the old paste and replaced it with artic silver paste and the z10 has been much much cooler. It use to run about 105*f and now it is around 85*f.
See this thread I posted for before and after pictures using a thermal imager.

@Curve8530 .....as much a s your discovery is appreciated, I hardly believe that most people will actually dismantle their phone to remove the paste and replace with arctic silver. Besides, what you are doing is not a fix for the actual problem....
In most cases, this heat is associated with apps using the CPU resources beyond the normal limits.
As an easy fix, finding and removing the app(s) in question followed by a reboot, solves the issue. In some cases an OS reload is necessary.... but under no circumstances I would even remotely suggest to any member to dismantle their phone and do what you did...
