Lightroom 4.3 hanging whilst editing picture

I'm regularly getting the following error when using lightroom.  It can happen at anytime though usually in the develop module, Lightroom will start to hang and then i'll get the following windows error.  This has happened in in Lightroom 4.1, 4.2 and now with the 4.3RC.  I'm running windows 7 64 bit with a Core i5-2500k cpu running at 3.3GHz with 16gb or RAM.  I've tried uninstalling and starting afresh with LR and still getting the same issue.  I've tried using back up catalogues but still getting the same issue. I've had the image files on both internal and external hard drives to no change in behaviour.  There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when it starts to hang I can be moving from one image to the next or moving a slider to adjust an image. Once i've closed LR i can reopen it straight away.  Sometimes it'll hang again immediately sometimes it'll not crash again for hours.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received as this is beginning to drive me mad!

This could be due to a corrupt Preference File. This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.
BTW: Re-installing Lr ddoes not replace the Pref. File since it is designed to "survive" upgrades.
See here for where to find the Preference file for your OS: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroo m-4.html

  • Accidentally replaced lightroom catalog master folder with edited pictures.

So I went on a trip this past weekend to Tahoe. I edited some of the pictures and created a Tahoe 2011 folder and the desktop and decided to put it in my pictures folder on my macbook. It asked if i want to replace and not thinking i said yes. Does anyone know how to get the pictures on the catalog back? I never had set up time machine and now i'm hating myself for it.
I tried hitting command + Z a couple times, but there was nothing to undo.

I was using lightroom 3.6. I did the update right after/before, can't remember. The update was so you can olympus cameras or something. Tahoe 2011 ircat folder is saved under default on my pictures folder on the mac hdd. i edited some pics and created a folder called tahoe 2011 on the desktop and than without thinking moved it to where the ircat folder is. It asked me to stop, continue, or replace. Without thinking, i hit replace. After i realized this, i hit command Z to retrieve it back. Nothing worked. I don't have the pictures on my memory card anymore either.

  • How can my edited picture Back from PS CS3 to Lightroom?

I was working in a project. One picture I need to take it back to Photoshop CS3 for the edit. It works great. But after edit I could not take it back my edited picture to Lightroom and I did not see any command as well. And during that process I lost my edited picture and do all over again staying in the Photoshop. Is there any way that we can safely return to Lightroom with the edited picture?
    Thank You.
    jeevan

When you are finished editing in ps , make sure you use "save", not "save as".
If you use save, the edited file will "return" to LR automatically.
If you change the name, you are going to have to reimport it into LR from the disk. Andy

  • Is there a way I can edit pictures in Lightroom 5 on my mac and be able to switch to my pc if I have my catalog and my pictures on an external hard drive?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro and I also have a Wacom Cintiq companion and I would like to be able to edit my pictures on both the computers. I prefer using my mac but sometimes, when I need to be more precise with my editing, I like to use my Wacom Cintiq companion. I followed the steps to install my catalog and pictures on an external hard drive, then added the ''Folder'' of pictures in both computers but the problem I have is that since a PC and a Mac doesn't read the hard drive ''root'' the same way, it creates a second folder on my mac that I can't have access and I am not able to edit pictures on one computer and keep them on the other computer.
    Can someone help me??
Here is an exemple of what I get ...

Contact the Apple account security team for your country and request assistance: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security.  If you can prove your identity to them, they can reset the password and help you regain control of the account.

My photo has become stuck, whilst editing it, I can't get back to,the rest of my photos ?
    Any ideas ?

Quit the app completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

I think Lightroom 1.1 needs to be taken off the market until they fix these problems.
I just got a new Dell 690 Workstation. On my old computer I had my copy of Lightroom 1.0 and no problems at all. Installed 1.1 on my new computer and things cascaded downhill from there. Lightroom crashed Photoshop CS3, I could not open Lightroom 1.1 upon restarting my computer, got a MW32 Runtime error. Some of my newly installed plug-ins crashed. I finally called Dell Tech support, they had me do a restore my computer, that didn't fix it. I finally started working backwords to find out what was causing me this hell. I had not installed the 1.1 update until a couple of days ago and had not used the program until this morning. I am on Windows XP Pro and noticed upon reading the update info that there were Windows Vista compatibility fixes attached to this update. I don't know, but I did a system restore reverse and got back to this morning, uninstalled Lightroom 1.1, reinstalled 1.0, and everything is fine. I pity the people that bought 1.1 as their first version. I have been reading other blogs about 1.1 problems and MAC is having them too. It is crashing hard drives etc.

Any work you do in Lightroom is in the catalog. It is impossible to use Lightroom without a catalog.
In addition, your photos are filed in a specific location, which is determined when you import the photos (this may be a location you have specified or it may be the default location chosen by Lightroom).
So ... unless you specifically choose to delete your photos, your photos have not been deleted. To find them, open Lightroom and select File->Open Recent and select each catalog shown there until you find the one with your 170 photos.
And now ... a word to the wise: as gvb279 and Keith said, you absolutely need to stop doing whatever it is you are doing and learn the basics of Lightroom. You are clearly in need of such basic understanding. • Is Lightroom appropriate for scanned negatives and pictures

What little I have read about Lightroom assumes pictures taken with a digital camera. I have two digital cameras (Nikon D70 and Canon Elf IS 850) which give me reason to try Lightroom, and it has been recommended to me by a big-time photography acquaintance. Photoshop CS3 is what I am using.
I have hundreds (more likely thousands) of pictures I have scanned from old negatives and old prints (don't be surprised, as I am old and retired). My oldest photograph is an 1882 print of my grandfather milking a cow with my mother's comment in her scrapbook: "Dad can milk a cow!" Not surprising, as his parents had a farm, though my mother knew him as the owner of a small town hotel. I've a negative from about 1912 which I successfully scanned.
I have black and whites copied from my mother's scrapbook pictures, black and whites from black and white negatives of my children's youth, and color negatives from when color became affordable.
I think you get the picture.
The question again: Will Lightroom be helpful with these old pictures, be they from prints or negatives?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I'm using Lightroom for processing and cataloging scans of both old slides and even older prints, and find it very convenient to use. Firstly the develop capabilities are pretty good for adjusting white balance and tone curve either on individual images or batch processing (e.g. correcting a magenta cast or skylight haze on a whole box of slides in one go). My slide scanner does a decent job of auto cropping the slides though I imagine LR would be good for this if not, however I do have to manually crop and straighten scans of prints from my flatbed scanner, and the lightroom UI seems to me to be good for that also.
I have also converted my initial 16 bit uncompressed TIFFs from the scanners to DNG, saving a fair amount of space (~30%). Some would argue this is totally unnecessary as you could compress the TIFFs instead, but I find the conversion to DNG within LR very easy to carry out, and I also find it gives better (lossless) compression especially on the somewhat grainy 16 bit scans. Once I'm happy with all the color and tone curve adjustments I'll probably produce 8 bit LZW Tiffs to archive and maybe discard the still huge 16 bit DNGs (depending on the cost of storage at that time).
I think Lightroom is also very good for the task due to the integrated nature of the DAM and Develop tools - it doesn't force you into a fixed sequence of working (such as having to do developing before cataloging and other metadata operations or vice versa).
EDIT: I just realized you're referring to Negatives, not slides, so you might find the Develop tools a bit harder to use as LR isn't optimized for handling non-camera images especially negatives, though as someone else noted there are some work-arounds for handling negative conversion. However once you manage to produce positives somehow, I'd definitely recommend LR for further work.

  • Transferring edited pictures to desktop on Mac

So when I use lightroom to edit the pictures and then try and transfer those edited pictures to my desktop for some reason the pictures go back to its original unedited copy. How do I make keep the edited form of the pictures when I'm transferring them to my desktop?

Lightroom is a non-destructive editor and as 99jon mentioned your LR edits are contained in the catalog file. The original camera file and other files that are 'Imported' into LR are never modified. To apply those edits you need to use the Export module or LR's other modules (Book, Slideshow, Print, Web).

Please be very careful how you move, rename, or "organize" your LR imported image files and folders. This should only be done from inside LR. Any LR file or folder that is moved or renamed using Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder or other application will become disconnected from the LR catalog. Done this myself a few times and I know better......it doesn't hurt to be reminded.

  • No layers available when editing pictures which are developed with LR?

When I edit a copy of a picture out of LR using Photoshop Elements 6.0, I'd like to apply the development settings I've made in LR and use layers in PSE. Why do I get only the option to edit the developed image without layers or edit an undeveloped copy with layers?

I made the following post in another thread and while the specific issue in the OP is not the same the reasons for Lightroom inability to work with layers is related. I suppose a similar question could be asked why can't PS send the layered image back to ACR for further editing there.
Quote "Once again the name Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is confusing the users. This name change came in Beta 3, I believe.
Lightroom is not Photoshop or a plugin for Photoshop, which is a pixel editing program.
Lightroom does not do pixel editing it retains details of image corrections internally in the catalog and in xmp files(optional). Photoshop per say cannot read these corrections.
ACR v 4.x can with respect to raw/dng files provided LR corrections have been saved to xmp, since they share the same processing engine.
If you wish your Lightroom edits to be viewed or usable in image editing programs, you need to export the file from Lightroom as a type of your choice tiff, jpg, psd etc and save in a designated folder. Then the file is usable with any image editing program.
If however your are working with raw/dng files in the develop module of Lightroom you can send these to an external editor, Photoshop or whatever, in this instance Lightroom will save a copy next to the raw original in the format you choose in the preferences. You still end up with a second file same as if you had done an export, just saved in a different location.
Adobe please take the Photoshop out of the Lightroom name." end quote.

  • How can I get the edited pictures from the thumbnails to full size?

I upgraded to iPhoto 11, the thumbnail photos show my previous edits, but when I click on the photo to make it bigger, it reverts back to the unedited, original picture.  How can I get the edited pictures from the thumbnails to full size?

Verify you are using iPhoto11 ver 9.5
if not run the >Software update or check your apps folder and make sure the correct iPhoto is launched,  not an older ver.

If I'm in LIghtroom 5, and try to Edit in Photoshop CS6, I always get the following message: "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 8.6 for full compatibility." But I have updated to 8.6 and have no remaining updates. How can I fix this?
If I click "Open Anyway" or "Render using Lightroom", I get the following message:
"Adobe Photoshop CS6 cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop CS6 works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."
Please tell me what to do so I can edit from Lightroom to Photoshop.

In Photoshop, if you choose Help - About Plug-in... - Camera Raw, does it say 8.6?
Seems to me there was some hiccup they found in the update process, which prompted this:
Camera Raw updates cannot be applied
I honestly don't know if the problem could apply to 8.6 as well, which is why I asked you to check to make very sure you really got it.
