Lightroom 4.4 cannot partly read Nikon Capture NX2 changes in NEF files
Good Morning,
if I improve a NEF-File in capture NX2 and save it as a NEF-file and afterwards will import these files into LR, then the changes are available on the LR Importscreen (great), but during the import-process in LR the changes - embedded in the NEF-file - disappear, and I just see the original NEF-file before the changes. Looking to learn how to solve this problem.
Nikon Capture NX2 uses its own proprietory process to render the raw data and produce a viewable image file which Lightroom cannot use.
Lightroom has its own process and profiles developed for your camera model, it uses these to render the raw data and produces a viewable image file. The view you see on the import screen are the thumbnail jpeg's created by your camera which enable you to view the image on your camera's screen.
Adobe may have created aditional profiles for you camera to emulate the look of your camera, in the develop module these are located in the Camera Calibration and can be choosen there (Camera standard, camera landscape, camera portrait etc.). There are also tools for you to create your own profile and look for your camera if you wish.

I recently bought full edition of Lightroom 5 for my Nikon D610 but when i connect my other camera,Nikon D3100 for editing my NEF files it says not supported files. What am i doing wrong?
Thanks in advanceOften, this error message means that you have used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer, and this has corrupted the files. There is a fix which uncorrupts the files at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
But you said you get this message when you "connect my other camera Nikon D3100", the key word being "connect", and this doesn't really fit the description I just gave. This error message normally happens after you have transferred the photos to your computer via Nikon software, not when you connect it. So ... maybe you need to explain a little more ... what exact task (what menu options, what are you clicking on, what are you trying to do) when you get this error. -
Nikon Capture NX2 crashes when opening image
Hi Experts,
Nikon Capture NX 2 version 2.4.7 crashes when I attemt to open an image to edit on my iMac, 27-inch, Mid 2011, running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65). The same application versions runs sweetly on my MacBook Pro - I therefore suspect a problem somewhere within my iMac. The problem first appeared when upgrading NX2 to version 2.4.7. At that time Os x was on 10.9.2. Rolling back to version 2.4.6 did not fix the issue nor upgrading later to OS-X 10.9.3.

I have tried the following to no avail:
Uninstalled NX2, Cleaned out all cashes and re-loaded the application - manually and using ONYX
verified and repaired disks and permissions using disk utility
reloaded OS X Mavericks
Can someone please assist by suggesting how I should go about to fix this problem. I have reached the end of my rather limited troubleshooting capabilities:)
Kind Regards
GeorgI also have a problem with Nikon Capture NX2 crashing uponopening a NEF raw file. This has only occurred with the V2.4.x updates. I have 3 MAC's all running 10.9.3 OS. On 2, I've upgraded NX2 to 2.4.x versions and they both crash. On my other machine, I never updated and am running V2.3.0 with no problems. I also ran terminal to look for *.sm.gui files and found 3...all related to Nikon software. I deleted those and rebooted and reinstalled the latest V2.4.7. At least now, the program opens instead of hanging at the splash screen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
THANK YOU!

Will LR 5.3 read Nikon picture controls applied to RAW files in-camera?
I've never used picture controls on my D4 because my understanding was that, even though they're embedded in RAW files in-camera, only Nikon software will read the data. Can anyone verify this condition for me? If my LR software will read these settings, then I would start experimenting a bit!
As Andrew said, Lightroom won't read Nikon picture controls, so if you want similar picture style as shot, you need to either:
* manually select camera emulation profile (you can make presets or defaults as you prefer) - see camera calibration section.
* use a plugin like ISO Detailer to select camera emulation profile automatically based on camera setting.
To be clear: *any* software can read any metadata in a NEF (or NRW) that it wants to (there is no legal or technical reason that is prohibitive). Still, it is proprietary, which means "subject to change without notice", which means you have to change your software if Nikon decides to change proprietary metadata around. In practice that almost NEVER happens, since it's defined by camera firmware which, once debugged, isn't "enhanced". (right: they could do a newer model differently, but that doesn't affect the code which supports older models).

Cannot make CS6 the default program to open nef files on a windows 7 computer.
On my Windows 7 computer, I right click a nef file and select Open With. CS6 is not listed. I browse to the CS6 icon and select it and OPEN. Nothing happens. It does not get added to the list. CS5 worked as it should. I have submitted this on a Windows forum and am getting nowhere. All updates for Adobe and Windows are installed. I can open a nef file from within PS. It is only when trying to open a file from a folder that I have a problem.
This problem is solved. The solution was to uninstall and re-install CS6. (deactivate before uninstalling)
Message was edited by: Richard NikonI would recommend contacting Adobe Tech Support for this as playing with registry is quite dangerous , your computer may crash.
Still if you want to try , first create the System Restore point and Backup your Registry , just incase something goes wrong.
In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name.
Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would. -
Processing Nikon Scan 4.0.2 NEF files in PSE 7 Raw Editor
I own a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED. The scan software Nikon Scan 4.0.2 can produce "raw" files with NEF extension. On the web I found some remarks concerning this file type stating that the scanner NEF is not really a raw file. A scanned pixel has already 3 color values, so there is no need for demosaicizing. It is stated that in fact the NEF file is a type of TIFF file instead.
Anyhow, importing this scanner NEF file in the PSE7 Adobe Camera Raw Editor seems to impose no problems. After editing the image can be saved including the editing parameters, so the original image may be restored or changed by repeated editing. By choosing "Done" the editing info is saved in a XMP file additional to the NEF file. You also may Save As DNG file containing the editing parameters together with the image data in a single file. The processed file may also be loaded into the Editor Workspace directly for additional fine tuning.
My question comes down to: is this is a viable solution for real raw processing of the scanned images. The scanner NEF file is not exactly raw, so I'm not sure whether or not the ACR Editor (or converter) handles the image data correctly. Does the ACR Editor know that the scanner NEF file is already demosaicized? And is the additional metadata (like colorspace) correctly interpreted?
Do you have experience with or knowledge about the quality of this type of workflow, please let me know. Any comments are welcome!
Leendert
PS I also posted this subject in the forum: Photoshop Elements Technical Issuses and got the suggestion to try this forum. I'm using the Windows platform. Thanks Thomas and Ann for your valuable info.
I understand that the output color data of a scanner is not really Raw. Contrary to camera's, scanners are reading linear RGB data so there is no need to convert or demosaice the data. May I conclude that the Nikon's proprietary "Raw" NEF format comes down to TIFF with embedded reversible editing parameters that can only be used in the Nikon Scan (editing) software?
Consequently, when importing the Nikon NEF's in ACR5.2 the embedded parameters are lost (possibly because ACR is not supporting the Nikon Scanner "Raw" format). So there is no advantage in using the NEF format and outputting in TIFF should be just fine.
Anyhow, I prefer using ACR as a start instead of the standard editor because of its fine and reversible editing tools. But how do I import TIFF's in ACR? When opening a TIFF in the PSE7 Editor, this file type is opened in the normal Editor. How do I switch to the ACR? Is it possible to save the ACR reversible editing parameters embedded in the same TIFF file or as accompanying XMP file ("Done") or should I "Save As" a DNG file.
And above all, can I be sure that the Color Management defined in Nikon Scan (sRGB, Gamma) is maintained while processing the file in ACR? -
LR 5.7 and Nikon D7200. unable to import NEF files.
I have LR 5.7 and a brand new Nikon D7200. I upgrades LR3.x to 5.7 and now i am unable to import NEF files. Is there a solution? did i do something wrong?
Though this is not productive, and to those on the thread, my apology, JimHessI have had the service for greater than a year and I am month to month - so I would be surprised if there is a cancelation fee. With Respect To the 'do not get it' the camera is 2 days on the market, so yes, I do understand no support right now, but, as you stated in your earlier post, 'a couple of months' THAT is what I do not understand! I do not know if you work for Adobe, or just a user but that is where my comments started.
In My Humble Opinion 2-3 weeks, that is something understandable. Now, it is up to Adobe, a business, to make the decision of how many resources they put on this, and thus the timing. As a consumer the only 'vote' I have is my dollar!
The cloud market is great for companies that get a constant revenue stream to fund their business, verse perpetual licenses where they obtain lumps of business from upgrades. When they build a new version with enough value to drive their install base to move/pay for the next upgrade. To the consumer the value of the cloud, should be continues and timely enhancement and not waiting for long next release schedules. That is why over the next few years I will give more money to Adobe that buying perpetual licenses, the continues and timely updates.
I will let you have the last comment on this, as I am done on the negative side.
What is more useful is posts like trshaner who is showing novices like me how to continue to use the product through features in the product. -

plugin #1 (XmpEdit) - I just need to update xmp metadata in TIFs & DNGs.
If I remember correctly, LR writes this data into those data into the files if you press Strg + S or if you configure LR to write allways into the xmp files. If this does not work for you, perhaps http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ or http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4529&fileID=4219 can provide more options to you.
Having Lr do it for me wouldn't work, but calling exiftool and harvesting the return stuff from stdout may be better than what I'm doing now - thanks.

plugin #2 (Lr <--> NX2 Interface) - I just need to update the main image in a cooked NEF.
Call me conservative, but I'm really not a fan of writing in these files. It might work with and SDK, but I think there is no public SDK for it.
In addition I think it is not possible to translate LRs Development-Settings into NX Settings and NX Settings into LR. By updateing the preview you just have a preview with wrong parameters. Sounds week to me. But I would be glad if you can convince that I am wrong.
Most people think I'm crazy. There is no support in the Nikon-SDK for it, but all I need to update is the main rgb image - nothing else.

RAW NEF files in Aperture from Nikon Capture editing show no edits
Any NEF files that I have previously edited and re-saved in Nikon Capture Editor as a NEF file, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. I only see the 'As Shot' version.
Interesting that the Finder in OS X shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Thanks, Scott K.According to Scott Kelby, in an ancient treatise from when he was currying favor with Nikon, that's how NEFs work, and that's the beauty of most proprietary raw handlers. Capture's adjustments are merely instructions, saved along with the file, rather like adjustment layers. When you open the NEF in Nikon Capture, the instructions are added to the image. You can always cancel them and recover the original since nothing has actually been done to the original. Your preview thumbnail out of Capture is designed to exhibit the changes but I'm not surprised Aperture doesn't read the changes made in Capture.
If you saved out of Capture as a TIFF, aperture would see them.

Read settings in NEFs from Nikon Capture during import?
Short version: during import, I would like Lightroom to detect and then approximate edits that I have made to NEFs with Nikon Capture.
Longer version: I have several thousand images that I've previously (individually) edited in Nikon Capture. Is there anyway to capture the gist of these edits *on an individual file basis* when importing into Lightroom, or am I limited to the Lightroom default and my own Lightroom presets? I don't expect Lightroom to *exactly* duplicate whatever I've done in Capture, but it would be nice if it pick up some of the information.
I've searched the forums for this, but didn't find anything relevant. My apologies if this is a duplicate post.
thanks,

>Is there anyway to capture the gist of these edits *on an individual file basis* when importing into Lightroom
From what I see here, LR simply ignores [or cannot see*] edits from
Capture [NX]; all my manipulated files come in as they were shot, not
as they are saved afterwards. In some cases - e.g. when you used the
brush tool, probably other tools, too - LR cannot even import the NEF.
Same holds for NEFs created with Capture.
*The problem has more to do with Nikon than Adobe, as N does not
disclose their NEF metadata structure. To the contrary, they not only
put loads of interesting information in the manufacturer's section -
thus hiding them in effect - they use encryption for some data (white
balance is the only known one but ...).

Nikon Df RAW (NEF) files will not load previews into Lightroom 5.4. Nikon d300s RAW (NEF) files load just fine. Df files do not.
Thank you for your response.
I have loaded directly into Lightroom using import and via Nikon Capture NX2. RAW files display fine in Capture.
In Lightroom, blank previews are created for each available image, with the message "Preview unavailable for this file." -

HunterX (Surachart Opun)To me it looks like your undotbs on node3 is filled and not marking old undo as expired. Use this query to find out if it is labeling old undo as expired.
SELECT tablespace_name, status, COUNT(*) AS HOW_MANY
FROM dba_undo_extents
GROUP BY tablespace_name, status;
Another thing I noticed from your alertlog is it is only doing that on undotbs3, which I assumes is on node3.
1) try recreate undotbs on node3
2) take node3 out of service (stop nodeapps, ASM, instance and finally CRS on node3) and see if you can do DML on your database.

ORA-01110: data file 12: '/oracle/RTQ/sapdata2/sr3_9/sr3.data9''
This file is in RECOVER mode.
my SAP application ECC6.9 is running.
Oracle is also running.
I do not have any oracle backup

Please advice.Hi PushpaMitra,
Check below note.

ORA-00376: file 2 cannot be read at this time
Hi,
Our SAP system is down. When checked I found PSAPUNDO tablespace needs recovery. (From SYSSMU1$ to SYSSMU10$ NEEDS RECOVERY and SYSSMU11$ to SYSSMU17$ are offline).
So I have created another tablespace PSAPUNDO2 and altered the system.
SQL >create undo tablespace PSAPUNDO2 datafile 'D:\Oracle\SOL\sapdata1\undo_2\UNDO.DATA2' size 700MB;
SQL>alter system set undo_tablespace=PSAPUNDO2 scope=spfile;
I have changed undo_management to Manual. And I have not dropped old tablespace PSAPUNDO yet,
I have restarted the system and initially the database was not open.
I gave command alter database open and opened it.
The oracle has been started normally. But still SAP instance cannot be started.
Last few lines of aler log:
Sun Jan 06 04:05:12 2013
Completed: ALTER DATABASE OPEN

ORA-00376: file 2 cannot be read at this time
ORA-01110: data file 2: 'D:\ORACLE\SOL\SAPDATA1\UNDO_1\UNDO.DATA1'
Now when i give command:
show parameter undo, I got the table_space name as PSAPUNDO2.But if I give command
SQL> select segment_name,owner,tablespace_name,status from dba_rollback_segs;
I am getting PSAPUNDO as the tablespace insteadof PSAPUNDO2. PSAPUNDO tablespace needs recovery. (From SYSSMU1$ to SYSSMU10$ NEEDS RECOVERY and SYSSMU11$ to SYSSMU17$ are offline).
Also
In BRTOOLS, in show tablespace command I cannot see the new tablespace PSAPUNDO2.
Kindly suggest how to resolve this issue.Hi,
Thanks for your reply. When I checked SAP down issue(around 6th Dec) I had exteneded the tablespace PSAPUNO and PSAPSR3 with brtools and restarted the server.
Then I checked further and found the problem was PSAPUNDO needs recovery.
Then I created another tablespace PSAPUNDO2 and altered system. (See my previous post).
Now as you told I checked alert log history to check when the problem started and found the following:

I am not sure what caused this error: ORA-00376: file 2 cannot be read at this time
I think there is no issue with Parallel_Max_Server as I can see its entry in Alert log since 2007.
