Lightroom 4 Catalog didn't save

Had an interesting one today. Imported a few images this morning, Did some edits and then exited. I received the prompt to backup the catalog, which I accepted.
Later in the day I reopened LR4 and the new images weren't there. I checked and the files were on my hard drive so I reimported them. But of course all the edits were goine.
So just for curiosity, I renamed the catalog and copied the backup back to the main folder.
And voila, the edits had been saved in the backup copy.
It's as if LR4 forgot to save to the main catalog after creating the backup copy. I'll have to keep an eye on this.

This sounds very strange.
There is no special save-action in LR: each activity is automatically saved as a record within its database.
When LR performs a backup, it just creates a second copy filed away in a dated extra folder, and does some house-keeping like optimzing and integrity check.
So if you arrived at a perfect backup catalog how should the source be different, other than maybe illegible/corrupted?
If entries are missing in the main catalog there should have been a delete command sometime after backup.
While I would never say to a user that things cannot be which he reports to have seen I must say that I am at a complete loss to find any idea for explanation for what you describe.
Please use notes to scribble down exactly what action you have performed and what you have observed
when further investigating into this.

Hello I am a long time Aperture User and after seeing the new Apple Photos App I am considering to move to LR. I have run a test version and basically LR is giving me all I need, except I could not find one feature that I like in Aperture. In order not to put my photos in a box and forget them I have created Smart Albums with the 5 Star rated photos and I am running them as Screensaver on my TV connected to a Mac Mini. On the Mac Mini I can choose this Aperture album as screensaver directly from the Settings Menu. Can I do something similar with a LR Catalog on a Mac? Thanks for your help

Considering LR is also a Windows program, I wouldn’t expect it to integrate with Mac-only features like Aperture might; however, it seems to me that you could set up a publishing service to a disk folder and have that folder be the source of a slideshow screensaver if one exists on a Mac.

Lightroom 5 Catalog Won't Open - PLEASE HELP

So, my most important lightrooom catalog won't open and I don't know what to do. Screenshot below. I guess it didn't shut down before I ejected my hard drive.

Look in the backups folder, there should be several folders that are dated, look in the latest date and open that catalog, depending how much time was between the last back up and your last work, will determine how much work you lost.
What I recommend (hind site here) is once you get your catalog open is save a catalog first in a location easy to get to, normally where your old corrupted catalog was. then select all images then save. (ctrl/cmd-s) This will write the metadata to your files on the drive or side car files(depending how you set it up and if they are raw or jpg. ) Then you will have this for a backup, as you will know that all edits you have done are in the metadata, therefore you can create a new catalog and import all files to get back to where you were.
That said, use this method as a last case scenario, normally using a back up catalog would be good enough. However, if something happened to that main folder, like corrupted segments on the drive, you would have your images to fall back on, or at least those you can access.
But if your backing up to an external drive, you should be alright anyway.
I tend to go over board with backing up since I had a drive that crash a few years ago.

And yes I did something else stupid. I restored Lightroom using my trial software and now have Lightroom 2 and Lightroom 3.3 installed. That was dumb.

Missing Excel Macro - Didn't save as .xlsm

So I realized that I didn't save my file as a macro-enabled workbook before I closed it, and now my macro is completely gone. I haven't shut down the computer since then, and I was wondering if it was still in my computer in a temporary folder somewhere.
I already tried going to the PERSONAL in C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART and I didn't not find anything there. Is there anything I can do now, or is that baby gone? This is Excel 2010

Lightroom 4 - Catalog problem?

I recently installed Lightroom 4.0 on my new Windows 7 Home Premiun SP1 (64 bit) computer and imported my Lightroom 3.6 catalog into a Lightroom 4 catalog.
I have two problems which may or may not be related.
First:
While working in the Library, adding key words, etc., Lightroom will suddenly report in the current photo "The file named "xxxx (either .mrw or .jpg)" is offline or missing". On viewing the folder listing in the left-hand pane, all of the folders display with a "?". They did not do so moments before.
Second:
My LR4 import path is C:\Users\Bain\Pictures\My LightRoom.
However, Lightroom is displaying the folders imported since the upgrade as if they are in the root of C:
When I view the folders in Windows Explorer they are displayed properly in the My Lightroom folder.
I'd apprecaite any suggestions or help in resolving these issues.

Let me clarify the issue of the Missing Folder.
1.       The Lightroom 4 folder listing is normal
2.       While working on a photo in a folder I receive the "The file named "xxxx (either .mrw or .jpg)" is offline or missing" message.
3.       All of the folders in the folder listing are displayed with the question mark “?”.
4.       This issue has occurred multiple times.
I worked in Lightroom until I was able to recreate the “offline or missing” message, and all the folders in My Lightroom displayed ‘?’
I followed your instructions, right-clicking on the folder the error occurred in, selecting Find Missing Folder and browsing the folder location, the folder view flickered, but all folders continued to display ‘?’.
While I was typing this, the folder listing in LR ‘refreshed’ and the folders no longer displayed ‘?’
As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating.

Regardless of application, the first step that I take is to save and name the current document — even if it has no content yet. With Pages, this good habit enables autosave. As you add content, your document revision history is restorable via the File Revert To menu. The delete key has the same document foreboding as only teaching a pet raven to speak "Nevermore."

How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?
I want to be able to specify paths and/or filename patterns that should NEVER be indexed in the catalog: not that they don't show up under certain circumstances, just that they are NOT THERE (in the catalog) to begin with!!
I also do NOT want to have to respecify these criteria when "synching" the catalog; criteria should be PERMANENT (or at least 'til they're changed in LR preferences).
I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem--but it sure seems like it, because I've spent an inordinate amount of time doing online searches & I can't find anything that addresses this issue.
Can anyone PLEASE HELP me?
BTW, Adobe employees (if there are any of you out there), I'm simply trying out LR now. If I can't get this (seemingly fundamental) thing worked out (with relatively little effort), Adobe is going to LOSE A SALE of LR, because it's useless to me without this feature.

Thanks for the info... but how to you TELL LR to EXCLUDE images in a particular directory/directory structure? The intuitive place to indicate this would be a right-click on the folder itself (or particular images), but no such option exists.. "???" Thanks again, -pt
The same way that you avoid buying things in your local convenience store. You don't stick a lot of labels on certain shelves, slap a credit card down on the counter each week, and announce you are buying everything that doesn't have a label on its shelf. You just choose the things you want to buy.
Your mention of "synching the catalog" suggests that you are expecting the LR library, to mirror the total images in the computer by default. This is not IMO a useful way to think about it. LR contains no images at all, by default: the Catalog starts out empty.
Then you Add just those selected images that you want to import, among those already in the computer. That's a one-off process which is IMO best achieved controllably in batches - which you can keyword and otherwise organise in LR terms as you go. For new incoming images, ongoing, it is a question of Copying, Moving or Adding these in defined batches as they occur - from the relevant location only - there is no need to re-consider the import of a wider body of images. And one would not want to repeat that whole task anyway: one's prior investment in achieving the right selectivity, has a positive value.

Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata?

I am running into space problems on my C drive (hard to imagine, but I my computer was configured before LR and iTunes). I have moved the iTunes music to another drive, but still need to free up space. LR is using over 3GB in the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata
Under it are folders 0 through 9 and A through F (plus a file called thumbnail-cache.db). These in turn have their own subfolders. Can I remove the whole C:\Documents and Settings\DandJ\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata structure? Do I need to change a preference to have this preview stuff go to a different drive in the future? My 'Camera Raw Cache Settings' is now pointing to a different drive, but this doesn't seem to be the same thing.
I would LOVE to have that 3GB+ free for other things (like defragging without having to move stuff back and forth)!

You can move your Lightroom catalogue and the previews to a different drive. The previews always must be in the same folder that the catalogue lives in. After you move them, simply double-click on the moved catalogue file to open it, and away you go.

Loss of Lightroom 4 catalog

I have lost my Lightroom 4 catalog. This was caused by a loose connection to my external drive where I keep my recent photos. The loose connection caused Lightroom to crash with a message 'fatal error'. My Lightroom 4 catalog backup is kept on my main C drive in My Pictures. I had backed up the day previously. I don't understand why the whole backup file has apparently been deleted. I have done a search to see if it is elsewhere on the drive but can't find it. When I try to open Lightroom I get the message 'upgrade the catalog file Lightroom 3 for use with Lightroom 4.

Have you used Mac's search tool (Spotlight?) to look for files ending in ".lrcat" (the first letter of that is an ell, not an eye )?
That's what your catalogue will be named.

Lightroom 3 crash after upgrading Lightroom 1 Catalog

I installed Lightroom 3 and upgraded my Lightroom 1 catalog (21,000 photos). It runs through the upgrade process without any problems and opens Lightroom 3, where I can browse through a few screens of images.
However, if I scroll past a certain point in my Grid view, Lightroom 3 stops rendering thumbnails. Double clicking on images fails to render a preview. CPU usage at this point goes from 50% to 0. At this point, Lightroom 3 becomes useless, though I can still scroll up and down, I only see empty grid thumbnail frames.
If I quit the application, I get a beachball, for minutes on end before I force quit.
Console reports the following:

Deleting all Lightroom 3 prefs, plists, catalog, previews, rebooting and trying the process again results in exactly the same problem.
I can still run Lightroom 1 fine. It has no problem with the Lightroom 1 catalog. I tried optimizing the Lightroom 1 catalog before upgrading, but this
did nothing.
I'm running on a 2007 MacBookPro with 3GB RAM and a 7200 RPM 500GB drive under Mac OS X 10.5.8.

The problem lies in 1 or more "corrupt" catalog entries from the old catalog. I had exactly the same problem going from LR2 to LR3 on a 2009 iMac running 10.6.4. I got the same console error messages and had exactly the same symptoms.
However I discovered that I could start LR3 with a new empty library and then use "import from catalog" to selectively import some parts from my LR2 catalog. There are about 6k images in the LR2 catalog and some folders would work fine and others would fail. After a lot of trial and error I was able to isolate where LR3 would hang and give me problems. And the images that it had a problem with were 2 images from the old catalog that LR2 would not display. Instead LR2 would show a blank thumbnail where the "corrupt" catalog thumbnail should be and would not be able to display that image. For those images, LR2 gave the following console error message:

Aside from not display the thumbnails and images for those two files, LR2 worked fine. When I unselected those two images from the "import from catalog" dialog, I was able to import the rest of my LR2 catalog into LR3 in one shot.
If LR1 fails to display some thumbnails, you could manually note which those are and then use the same process I used. It is still tedious going through a large library looking for blank thumbnails. If LR1 displays all thumbnails correctly then you could try the brute force trial and error approach that I initially used but that is very time consuming.

Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews

I am running LR3.3.
I am doing some housecleaning, and I've found this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata\
It looks like something that was abandoned during an upgrade, and thus it's a candidate for the trash bin. Any thoughts?

Lr 3 creates a copy of the original when you upgraded from an earlier version (i.e Lr1 or Lr2 to Lr3). Therefore, if you can locate a copy for Lr3 then yes it is redundant and can be deleted. The new file may not be labelled Lr3 but the date stamp should still give you a clue as to which is the most recent. That being said, a new copy will be created upon relaunch should you delete the wrong version. Basically, trashing the lrdata file simply means that Lr will need to rebuild a new copy.

How can I move my Lightroom 4 catalog (data, not photos) from my local drive to an external drive? My local drive is running out of space.
