Lightroom 4 hangs on import

I just installed Lightroom 4 on my Windows 7 computer, but I am having problems with it:
When I start the program and click on the import button in the lower left corner, the program is busy for about one minute and then I get the message from Windows that the program encountered an error and needs to close. Sometimes the screen changes before the error message and displays "Quelle wählen" (it is the german version of LR. translation "select source") in the upper left corner.
I get this behaviour on every start of Lightroom. I tried already several times to reinstall Lightroom and before the last reinstall, I carefully removed all Lightroom references on my hard disk.
I have installed Lightroom 4.1 64 bit.
My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1, has 4 GB RAM, AMD Athlon DualCore 4250e processor. There is 35 GB free diskspace on C: (SDD) and 80 GB on E: (mechanical harddisk).
The FAQ says: "What other software are you running?". I am not sure, what is interesting here. I am using Microsoft Office, Firefox, Thunderbrid, Norton 360° Antivirus and the NEC Spectraview Software.
Many thanks in advance for helping with this.

At this point, Tom, I would recommend renaming your Preferences file with Lightroom closed and then reopen Lightroom and let it rebuild the file.
"The preferences file is Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs, located in
Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/."
These folders are hidden by default and you may have to enable their view in Win 7
Let us know if this works, please.

  • Lightroom hanging on import from SD Card

When importing Nikon RAW images from an SD card on Lightroom 5.7 and copying to harddrive (Macbook Pro 5,4 15", OSX Mavericks, 8Gb Ram, 1Tb HDD), Lightroom hangs. When 'import' is stopped, it is not possible to import from the same source a second time (though SD Card is still shown as connected in finder).
Lightroom will then not shut down and needs to be force-quitted.
If I copy all of the images to a new folder on the desktop, everything works fine. If I add the SD card as a library location and import to itself, it works fine.
This problem has only started happening with LR5.7. All previous versions of Lightroom 3, 4 and 5 worked perfectly.
The problem report (to be sent to Apple) is below:
    Chris

I use an SD card and checked it with MS Explorer, no error messages, neither with the restore programs, so I assume it is ok.
In LR I tried to import the files: Copy to new location (on hard drive) plus parallel backup copy to another folder. Seemed to work ok until I clicked in LR on the "cancel import". Import stopped.
I deleted the imported images (if I remember correctly I used the LR function) as I wanted to have them in the same folder but with correct numbers.
Started again to import but as mentioned above, no images could be found by LR on the card. Checked with MS Explorer - no error messages, but no files, all 1.88 GB free on card.
Used two different recovery programs, both recovered all 99 images and copied them to a folder on the hard drive.
Tried again with LR to import from hard drive folder. All 99 image file names appeared in the preview, but all images apart from the first 14 plus image 22 were completely grey (as the frame). And only the 14+1 were imported.

  • Lightroom hangs on importing

On lightroom 5.7, when I go to import photos from either my hard drive or an SD card onto the catalog on my external drive, it just hangs. I'm on a mac. Would updating help? How do I upgrade

I finally stumbled on the answer as to why the videos were hanging on publishing them to my local hard drive.  On the publishing manager, the video format should be "ORIGINAL" (I didn't realize they were being published under H.264 - max quality).  Once I changed this to Original, the videos published lickety-split!  Still investigating why they take forever to import; will try importing straight from the camera (vs. the memory card & card reader) to see if there's any time difference.  Hope my solution helps others who've experienced this issue!

  • Bug: Lightroom 3.3 hang when importing video

On Windows, Lightroom 3.3 will hang when importing .AVI videos when the following is true:
    - Move or Copy (not Add)
    - Rename Files is selected
    - Filename pattern includes "exposure"
Changin to a pattern that only includes date and time will make the import succeed.

If it really failed in ntdll.dll it might be a system issue.  Make sure you disable all real-time anti-virus processes, and make sure your Windows system is up-to-date.
Otherwise, it will be hard to know what is going on. If it persists, open a support ticket with Adobe. Take a look in the event viewer to make sure you have all the details of the crash.

  • Lightroom 4.2 hangs on import

Hi Canon 5d3with a fast CF card.  I plug the camera into my Windows 7 laptop, fire up Lightroom 4.2, hit import, and all the new photos are tagged for import.  I press import and 4 or 5 photos import and Lightroom just hangs without importing any others.  The program shows as still responding in the Task Manager.  I close the program, detach and reattach the camera and get another 4 or 5 photos.  So if I have a bust day of shooting I have to go throgu this process many times to get of my photos imported.  Where do I start fixing this?
    thanks

Try copying the files to your hard drive from Windows Explorer. Then try importing them into Lightroom from the hard drive.
Do you get the same behavior in either case?

  • Lightroom 4.3 import issues - hangs

Anybody got a clue why this behaves so badly??
Very consistent and very annoying bug....have about 20,000+ images on my laptop HD. Desire to use LR to catalog and organize, etc. On some folders import runs fine. On others it just hangs, with no error message, and does not 'crash' LR.....it just hangs and does nothing. I have waited for 30 minutes to see if it is just 'busy', but nothing. The progress bar also shows no progress, or stops half way and hangs. Upon searching the forums I see this is a consistent complaint about LR in general, but most of the other reported problems are with external media. My issue is with images spinning on the internal HD. I checked folders that 'hung' consistently and with my other program, ACDSee, it builds thumbnail pages and opens the images just fine. The metadata also appears normal (Nikon D80 and D7000 images mostly...NEF and JPG)
Win7 Pro, Lenovo laptop w/4GB memory. Help....or I'm getting my money back. This is ridiculous behavior for s/w this expensive, from a reputable company, for a simple function like opening an image and interrogating the metadata, etc....wasting my time, which is valuable.
    UPDATE:
Just tried importing from an SD card. This does not work either. Images from a D7000. Initially the import screen showed thumbnails, but after creating a new directory in the target folder, the thumbnails would not display, and import simply hangs with no error or crash. When I cancel the import I get a message that says "no photos or videos were found to import" (and...yes...they were all selected)

Looks like I found the problem....VIDEO files are what causes the hanging upon import. ANY 'supported' video file (AVI, MOV, MP4, etc.) cause the import to gack. To test this I built a temp directory with a mix of JPG, DCR, NEF, TIF image files and WMV, MOV, AVI, MP4 video files. The WMV it simply ignores since it is not supported. If any of the supported file types are 'seen' the import preview thumbnails will not draw, and the import will hang. If you simply change the file extension on a video, then re-initiate the import, it imports all images OK, and ignores the unknown file type (i.e. it does not open the files and interrogate them if the extension is not known - the smart thing to do). I also checked the CODEC used in several of the video files and it is supported, so I dont think it is a CODEC issue. You would think if LR saw a file it did not understand, it would simply ignore it (e.g. a supported file extension with an unsupported CODEC inside). In my professional opinion this is a serious bug and needs to be addressed. I also installed the latest version of QuickTime and tried the test folder with just a single MOV video and it still hung. This is really stupid behavior.....I'm quite surprised that Adobe's QA team did not find this bug (file type smarts are pretty basic stuff....), so there must be something quite unique to my Windows box which has LR tied up in knots....
The final test was to cleanse my image folder tree of all videos, then import the entire tree of about 7000 images (about 20GB) in several hundred different folders. It chugged through the import without a problem (took ~10 min). This whole mess only killed several days of my time. I'll send Adobe the bill for my time.....

  • LR 4.4.1 on Win 8.1 suddenly started to hang when importing via usb from camera

I'm running LR 4.4.1 on Win 8.1 on a fairly new toshiba laptop. Worked fine for a few months; but then I have been unable to solve the problem of Lightroom hanging when I try to import directly from my camera via USB. If I download pics from the camera using file manager, and then point LR at the new folder [once the camera is unplugged], it can then see the folder on the hard drive and will import them without issues. But if the camera is installed, going to the import screen hangs the application.
    I have tried:
    deleting the lock file
    installing and  running LR 5
reinstalling LR 4disabling all the usb drivers, rebooting, and enabling
disabling everything in the start menu
deleting the preferences file and letting LR build a new one..
I can import from the SD card reader, but I nervous about that as I have had card corrupted before and lost pics when downloading that way with other laptops.
The camera is a Sony NEX-5N.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Steve

You must have Premier Elements that recognizes Videos.  Premier Elements is sometimes sold in tandem with Photoshop Elements so that both can operate seamlessly.
Amazon has got special price for buying both packages together.  I believe it is a difference of about $20, i.e. you pay 20 bucks more if you buy both products.

  • LR 1.4.1 Hangs on Import

Importing from SD card or from folder on hard drive, LR 1.4.1 hangs on import into an existing catalog. Sometimes it imports 1 picture, sometimes more, and then it hangs. Canceling the import does not work.
This is a Vista machine with plenty of horsepower and disk. I've re-installed LR, rebooted, etc. Importing into a brand new catalog works perfectly. Importing into another application works perfectly. The problem arose seemingly out of nowhere. Never had a problem, went out of town for a few days, returned with some pictures, and then no import into my existing catalog.
The problem appears to be a corrupted catalog. Any ideas on what to do from here? Thanks. JJB

Does it matter if they are JPGs or RAWs?
When you say it hangs, how "hung" is it? Does the mouse stop moving, or is everything else response, except Lightroom? Do you get a "Not Responding" indication in the title-bar? If you bring up Task Manager and add Page Fault Delta and Virtual Memory as columns, do you see any activity in CPU or Page Faults for Lightroom, and/or does the memory used fluctuate or slowly increase? Is anything else taking lots of CPU while LR is supposed to be importing, or is System Idle running close to 100%?
Do the previews come up ok on the import panel?
A large catalog may just take longer to import into, or like you say it could be corrupt. Have you tried importing into a previous backup, if you have some LR 1.4.x ones from earlier? Make a copy of the backup catalog, somewhere, open that copy, and try importing.
You might try creating a new catalog, and importing everything from your old catalog (if that was an option in LR 1.x), and then importing new images into that and see if it acts different.
Have you done an Optimize and Relaunch from the Catalog Preferences panel?

  • Aperture hangs on imports and other stability issues

My aperture will hang on imports, does not like me to do anything else at all when importing, lest it hang and if it hangs once and I force quit I have to restart the system to make it work again. I have had 5 crashes today and really PO'd. This is 1.5.6 and I am running 10.5.5.

Have you done anything to the files before importing them? In particular I'm thinking about giving them keywords through Bridge or LightRoom?
I have experienced Aperture hanging until force quit if I had done keywording to the (in my case) DNG's via Bridge / LightRoom prior to importing them into Aperture.

  • Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto

Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto.   I get the following error message:
Some import operations were not performed.
The following files were not imported because they could not be read  [followed by a list of the files I wanted to import]
Thumbnails show up.  LR just will not import them.
Any idea what is going wrong?

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

  • I keep getting the error:  "lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error" when trying to import from a catalog?

I have around 400,000 photos of 15 years so given the high number, I organized all my photos into 6 catalogs to avoid potential problems. All the photos and the catalogs are in a 4TB Seagate external hard drive. I use Adobe Lightroom 5 and I use a PC with the latest Windows Office 2013.
I wanted to have a NEW Catalog of all my rated 1 Star+ photos of all the years in a single Catalog. So I created what I called Star+ Catalog and I was told the best option is to import a Catalog at a time and given that there is no means to filter importing only Stared photos, I would import all the photos and then delete all the UnStared photos. I did that for Catalog Year 2014 but at the end gave me the message: "lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error". It actually had imported around 40k photos from about 50k total. I tried again and again and every time I end up with the same thing. I created another new Catalog and stared from scratch and the same ting happened: the ONLY EXACT 40k or so photos were imported and the rest were not!! When I imported Catalog Year 2013 of around 45k photos, it worked perfectly. But when I imported Catalog Year 2012 of 35k photos, the same thing happened!!
I then tried exporting the needed photos to a new Catalog and that worked.  But then when I try to import them again from my Master *+ Catalog I get the same error again!!
I also tried creating a new Master *+ Catalog and tried to import the Catalogs of each year into it and the same error happened again!!!
Any advice: 1) on how to solve this? and 2) if there is a better and easier way to create this Master Catalog of All Stared Photos of All my Catalogs?

OK, my starting point is that LR can happily contain 400000+ photos, and it's a mistake to create a 1 star plus catalogue as you suggest. Instead, I'd recommend you create a master catalogue of all your photos, which you can then query however you want - 2 star, or a certain keyword, or with "xyz" in the title etc.
If you are intent on going that way, you could try a slight change from what you've done so far. Instead of trying to import an entire catalogue and then delete no-star pictures, take the 2014 and 2012 catalogues and select only the 1 star photos. Then do an Export as Catalog for these items, and import the 2014-1star and 2012-1star into your new catalogue. That may get you past the problem images which I suspect are the problem.
If that doesn't work, or if you follow my initial advice, you're going to need to identify the image where the failure occurs. You may have a corrupt image file, and replacing it from your backup may be sufficient to resolve the problem. Alternatively, it may be a corrupt record in the catalogue, and in this case it may be sufficient to remove the image from the catalogue and import it again. You might try selecting everything in the 2014 catalogue and seeing if you can do an Export as Catalog, creating a clean 2014, and deleting 2014's previews folder might also get rid of a potential problem. Something else is to try the Export as Catalog for images 1-40000, then a second Export as Catalog for images 40002-50k.
So a few things you'll need to try, rather than a magic bullet, and a recommendation to change the underlying direction.

  • Hang during import from camera or media - HELP!

iPhoto hangs during import from camera or media reader. Works for 20 or more photos, then hangs. No response at all. Must force quit. After restarting the import, it will go further the next time, then hang again. And again. And again. Eventually the import completes. After that, all is OK until next import. VERY FRUSTRATING. Especially with 8GB media cards. ARRGH!
I've tried rebuilding iPhoto library (all options). Using iPhoto 7.1.5 on OS X 10.5.6. 4GB ram, intel dual core.
Help me Obe-Wan. You're my only hope.

I usually use the media reader. After the imports started hanging is when I tried importing direct from the camera to see if it made a difference. No difference.
I've reformatted the media. No difference. Still hangs on first import after reformat. Multiple media cards, all same result. Tried different USB ports, same result. Tried different media readers. Same result.

  • IPhoto hang on Import

iPhoto 11, update 9.2.3,  is hanging when importing photo's, no matter if the source is a file, iPhone or a camara.
I reinstalled iPhoto, did a mediathek db repair, a mediathek acces rights repair but nothing worked.  iPhoto can only be forced terminated after it is started.
    Any ideas?

First, let me say, I haven't really used a mac since about 1999 (PowerMac G3, I think?), so forgive my out-of-dateness. Also, this is the closest discussion I could find to the problem we've got, but it's not an exact match.
My other half has a MacBook Pro that is just a few months old and has issues with iPhoto that I said I'd look into. After he's been using it awhile and imported a bunch of photos into it (i.e. over the course of a couple months), it'll start hanging up when opening, or even not wanting to open the program at all. Over the course of the 2 years I've known him, I've seen it happen at least 3 or 4 times between this computer and its predecessor. I don't know the exact number of photos, but I don't think it could be near the 250k number I saw posted about being the limit. Could the data size of all the pictures contribute to the problem instead of just the quantity of pictures? Does this happen often? Is there a known reason it does?
So far it seems that his solution has been to wait for it to start working again on its own (and it seems it eventually does, for some reason. This time it took a week or so of not even trying to open the program, trying to open and hang while not loading any pictures, and then today just started working while i was trying to search out what to do to recover photos or something) and then exporting a batch of photos out of the program to make a smaller library.
If it hadn't started working again about an hour ago, I would suggest the rebuilding thing to him, but since it has started again, I don't know. Would that still be a good idea? Are there any suggestions for preventing this in the future? And if it does happen, is rebuilding the library the proper solution to try when it does?
Hope that made some sort of sense.

  • Lightroom 1.3 Import not automatic for card reader

Lightroom no longer opens Import window when card is connected, as it did with ver 1.2.
Preferences are set to "show import dialogue when card is detected".
When card is inserted in reader, Lightroom starts, but Import dialogue box does not appear.
I can manually open Import from Lightroom and import images.
When I click on "Adobe Photo Downloader" icon in Tray and select "Launch" it will start Lightroom but not Importer and says "no photos were found to import".

I'm seeing the same thing. I actually now have to open my card reader under "Import Photos from Disk" instead of "Import Photos from Device".

  • Encore CS3 - Hangs and import problems with menus and avi footage with audio tracks present.

I'm trying to import some footage files in .avi format into Encore CS3 and am having several problems.
In what follows when I say "crash" I mean Encore quits with a standard Windows error. When I say "hang" I mean Encore does not quit but rather becomes an unresponsive process that must be killed manually using Windows Task Manager.
    My System:
    WinXP Pro SP2
2.93 GHz Intel Celeron CPU - single core
    Intel PERL mobo
    3GB 400MHz RAM
    NVidia 7800GS video
I mention these specs however I am not experiencing any hardware
related bugs or issues (like out of memory or video driver crashes
etc) when using any CS3 app.
The footage files (as reported by GSpot) and problems I am seeing. In all cases GSpot reports that I have the appropriate codec installed:
    footage1.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 192kb/s, 716834 KB
Attempting to import as timeline causes Encore CS3 to hang.
Importing as an Asset allows it to import but when I try to click
on it in the project windown to add it to a new empty timeline,
Encore hangs. It plays fine in Windows Media Player.
    footage2.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG-1 Layer 3 48kHz 128kb/s, 718302 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no audio.
    footage3.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 112kb/s, 717606 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no
audio. I tried converting this one using AVS to both MPEG3 and DivX,
each using MPEG1-Layer3 44kHz 192kb/s audio, and got the same issue
upon importing into Encore CS3. I also loaded it into Camtasia
Studio and it looked fine over there. The audio was present and I
was able to export it as a .WAV file. When I tried looking at the
file in Soundbooth CS3, there was no audio track or, more
accurately, the audio track was a flat line.
By way of comparison these are importing perfectly:

Although this one imported & transcoded correctly, when I went to
build it to a DVD image file I got some strange errors during the
"planning video" stage that prevented the process from completing.
Unfortunately I neglected to write down the error message I recieved
which read like quite nonsensical babble to me, and I have since
deleted the project folder. I remember it was not a memory or
display related error and it included a timestamp where the error
was happening. I played the footage in the preview panel thru the
identified timestamp but it previewed perfectly without even a
jitter in either the video or audio. Took forever to transcode so I
doubt I'll be doing this one again anytime soon.
Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the

Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the remote control to make it appear. Other than that it seems to play ok in that player. Also tested it in 2 other DVD players (a Panasonic and Zenith) and it worked just fine like it's supposed to in them. Also plays perfectly in my computer's DVD player/burner using Windows Media Player v10. I tried burning to Memorex +RW single-layer single-sided disks at 6, 7, & 8Mbps project settings but got the exact same result every time.
Encore CS3 crashes fairly often during authoring, particularly during imports, and when I go to edit things like calling up a timeline in the timeline panel, dragging footage into an existing timeline, or changing button links in a menu etc.. I have also experienced seemingly random hangs even more often, probably 5 or 6 times as often as a crash. Saving the project after every little change I make, then closing and restarting Encore allows me to make progress albeit at a significantly reduced workflow rate. Accessing Photoshop from Encore appears to be working flawlessly so far aside from the slow load times. Encore hangs sometimes during video transcoding, repeat the process and it works ok. If I try to import a menu from the library after importing my footage files, Encore hangs trying to import it either at the 50% mark or the 99% mark (it varies even with the same exact menu selected from the library). If I import the menu first and the footage after, then no problems. Also trying to render motion menus after importing footage causes Encore to hang, render before footage import and everything works ok. Interestingly enough, previewing my project in Encore's monitor or preview panels works perfectly even in High quality mode -- in fact it operates quite smoothly in comparison to other apps I have tried. Although those footage files that had missing audio tracks on import obviously played silently, I have yet to experience a hang or crash during a preview or when scrubbing through a timeline in the monitor panel.
The last problem I've seen is with the project cache files. It doesn't always get rid of cache files when stuff is deleted from the project. I was working on one project and surprisingly ran out of disk space. When I tracked it down I found that there were some two dozen copies of a footage file I had repeatedly imported and deleted from the project still sitting in the cache folder. The file was an avi about 2GB so it was taking up some 40 GB of disk space for stuff that was no longer in the project. I tried shutting down Encore and manually deleting all the cache files, and that worked for most of them, but there was one 2GB file that kept reappearing in the cache folder even though it was no longer in the project. The XML file in the cache folder still had references to it in there so I can only assume that was the reason it kept showing up. I eventually had to delete and totally recreate the project from scratch to regain my lost disk space. This included having to sit thru a 6 hour long transcoding session which pissed me off to no end.
Encore CS3 appears on the surface to be a very powerful, feature rich, and approachable app with a simple easy to use interface, but it is awfully bugged in just about every area I have explored and still needs lots and lots of work for it to be really useful. Frankly for me it is pretty damn annoying that I have invested so much money in this suite only to find several of the apps in it (Encore & Premiere in particular) behaving this poorly. In my opinion every single app in the suite exhibits lousy performance whenever you must do anything at all involving the disk from the time you click to start it up until the time you click to close it down. Several of them are just as seriously bugged as Encore too, and being a long time Photoshop v5.5 user I expected much more from Adobe. Even Photoshop is two or three times as slow now (e.g. it takes about 20-30 seconds to simply create an empty 500x500 pixel image file and almost a full minute to load a 30x60 pixel single-layer gif). So far I have attempted to create 6 DVDs using Encore and after 3 weeks of effort have only succeeded in getting one of them onto a final disk -- and that one is kinda limping to work correctly in my DVD player. Three of those projects became so corrupted while working on them that I had to delete them completely and recreate them from scratch, only to find that I still couldn't get them to completion for one reason or another. Seriously disappointing.
