Lightroom 4 macbook pro no dvd drive

So without thinking, I ordered Lightroom 4 as an istallation disc instead of a download.  Of course I can't use it on my macbook pro because it doesn't have a dvd drive.  Since I will have a serial number can I still download from the Adobe website?  Asking before I open the box so I can still return it unopened if I need to.
Feeling pretty dumb

Download and install the Trial version from the Adobe website and authorize it with the serial number which came with the box.
Note: you always have the option to buy a cheap external DVD drive and connect it to the Macbook via USB for the odd occasion when you want to install software from disks or rip a CD. I do that occasionally on my MacBook Air when travelling.

  • Multiple issues on '09 MacBook Pro- battery, DVD drive, slowness, browsers

    I have a mid '09 MacBook Pro 2.53GHZ, 4GB RAM, running OS 10.5.8.
Recently, it's begun exhibiting random bad behavior, starting with slow behavior in Finder processes and, especially, very slow behavior and crashing in multiple apps, especially browsers (or maybe i just notice it there more because i use them the most). Then, all of a sudden the battery, which previously was fine and held a good charge, showed as Not Charging. I still have Applecare and called them, and they had me reset the power manager, which restored the battery to charging, but now it runs out quickly and often has strange readings, such as saying it has 6 minutes of charge when it also reads as 99% charged. The readings often have nothing to do with the actual state of the battery.
It's also suddently running a lot hotter and the fan is turning on more often, tho some of that may be that i now have both Google Chrome and Safari running at all times (i switch between them depending on which isn't hanging at any given time- both will crash with crashes of basic plug-ins, or simple non-responding, even tho Chrome is a newly installed app)
In case of system corruption, i decided it was a good time to upgrade to OS 10.6, which i simply hadn't gotten around to (a 10.6 disk came bundled along with with the original 10.5 disks with the Macbook when i bought it in late '09, probably an upgrade, it was right when they were switching over)... but i discovered that now DVDs won't mount either... so i can't install, reinstall, or even run diagnostics.
In disk utility booted from the internal drive, hard drive "verifies" fine and permissions are fine.
I've got a genius bar appointment the next time i go to city with the nearest Apple store- 120 miles away-
but any suggestions or ideas meanwhile?
the hardware issues- DVD drive, power, battery- make me wonder about the logic board's health.
Or could this still all be from OS or hard drive corruption?
And can i boot the Macbook from its Time Machine backup, which is on a firewire external drive, in order to run diagnostics? Not familiar with what Time Machine can and can't do. Otherwise, maybe i can borrow another mac to install OS from DVD to an open partition that's on the firewire hard drive and try to boot/run diagnostics from that (?). If i do that, should i do it with OS 10.5 (what it shipped with, and is currently running) or is it ok to do it with OS 10.6?
I'm also going to try to run in alternate user account to see if the browser etc crashes are as bad (i did try it briefly and found it still slow, tho not so badly).

Have you tried a SMC reset? Do a google search for more info.

  • Macbook pro external DVD drive initialization error 70012

This is an answer to my own question and a comment about finding answers to questions on Apple forums.
    The situation
I have a Macbook Pro, late-2009 model. In 2013, the internal DVD or optical drive died. I purchased an Apple external DVD drive to be able to read DVD disks, listen to audio, and watch video content. Because the computer I own was built to read only the internal DVD drive, it did not recognize this new external drive. When I plugged it in, I received an error: A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]. Or , or DVD could not be found, initialization error[- 70012].
    The question
Given this situation, my question was, how do I solve DVD initialization error 70012?
    The answer
Since my Apple Care plan had long since expired, before spending time and money at the Apple store to solve this, I decided to look online. After searching general sites and more and more specific sites, I found several posts on forums about my problem. The most helpful of these, with respect to an external DVD drive, was posted on CNET, by Topher Kessler (June 10, 2011 2:24 PM PDT):
    http://www.cnet.com/news/addressing-dvd-player-error-70012-when-using-external-d rives-in-os-x/
The key to his advice was twofold:
    1. Hardware: The Macbook Pro was programmed to recognize the internal DVD/optical drive alone.
    2. Software: The preferences in the Macbook Pro were set to open Apple's DVD Player when a disc is inserted into the drive.
To play audio or video discs on an external drive, the computer needed to be instructed to recognize the external drive, plus appropriate software needed to be opened. Mr. Kessler's advice went from hardware (i.e., get a new internal drive), to software (i.e., use different audio or video software), to operating system (i.e., alter the code in the operating system). Like with Goldie Locks, the first was too expensive, the last was too invasive, but the middle option was just right.
I searched for free software to display audio and video on my external drive and found two that could do the job quite nicely. There are others, but these seemed to be the most recognized and highly rated:
    1. MPlayerX (http://mplayerx.org/download.html)
    2. VLC Media Player (http://download.cnet.com/mac/media-players/?rpp=30)
So, I didn't have to buy an internal DVD drive and I didn't have to alter the code of the operating system. I just needed to download free software, install, and play.
    The points to learn
    1. Computers involve both hardware and software, therefore solutions to computer problems can require fixes to one, the other, or both.
    2. The simplest solution, and the least expensive, is to be preferred over the more complex.
    3. What went wrong for someone else is not necessarily what happened to your computer or software.
    4. What solved someone else's problem may not solve your problem.
    5. Just because nobody has posted information on how to solve your problem doesn't mean there isn't a solution to it.

    Hi Duane,
Thanks for the info! That's some catch-22 for DVD Player... but useful info. I guess I'll just pick up a generic DVD-ROM to replace the drive with.
As to the external drive, do not USB 2.0 cases run at the same speeds at Firewire 400 cases? (the same drive has no issues on other machines for playing dvds... just the lampshade iMac)

  • How do I install Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 on new MacBook Pro without DVD drive?

I just purchased my first MacBook Pro and am trying to get everything set up and installed. I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 and retrieved my serial number and have the redemption code -- but I can't figure out how to install Photoshop without a DVD drive. The Photoshop package I purchased only provides DVDs and I don't have a DVD drive. Is there a website I can go to to install Photoshop and enter my serial number or redemption code?

Have you tried downloading the trial version and using your serial
    number to activate it?
The trial version is a complete product and can be activated by
    inserting the valid serial number.
    Good luck.

  • Macbook pro unibody dvd drive replacement

Hi guys, im new here, looking for some advice.
My dvd drive on my macbook pro 13" unibody is playing up, it makes a odd noise when a disc is inserted, like something plastic is scratching.
my DVD burner is GS23N SB03, i think i need to replace mine. Ive found a burner on the net but its a GS23N S23NA, does anyone know if i can swap mine for this? and would i need to do something software wise to get it to work?
    many thanks
    Gary

How new is your MacBook Pro?, if it is a mid 2010 you can bring it to the apple store to have them take a look to it. If this is the case (having a 2010 MBP), you'll most likely be under the 1 year hardware warranty, and if an error is found with your MBP internal DVD drive, Apple will replace it at no cost.

  • Macbook Pro 15" DVD drive only displaying certain images?

Put in the disk and it loads about half of the images on it.  The rest say they are truncated or not good files.  Or that I don't have permission to view them.  This is happening on two Mac's that we have in the office but on a windows PC these images display fine.  More info:  Sometimes the images will work just fine, then they seem to stop working over time?  is the drive faulty?  Please help.

Grab a DVD Lens Cleaner disc. With lens cleaners the more brushes they have the faster/better they work and you only need to let it spin a few seconds.
This is the one I use now on all my CD/DVD hardware:

I've also used these and they work very well:

  • Installing Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro if DVD drive doesn't work

My superdrive is very finicky, and I don't want to risk an install with it if it decides to kick the DVD out halfway through the install. Can I connect to my iMac and install VIA firewire? I tried this today but the install seemed to stall and wouldn't progress. I had to do a hard restart which I know neither machine liked very much. Ideas? Advice?

You can connect them via Firewire cable. Both machines must be Intel models. Boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode. Boot the iMac from the OS X Installer DVD:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
Proceed to the screen where you select the destination drive. Select your MBP's disk drive then click on the Option button. Select the Erase and Install option then click on the OK button. Complete your installation.
When finished Eject the MBP's disk drive from the iMac. Shut down the MBP and remove the Firewire cable.

  • How do i make windows to recognize my macbook pro internal dvd drive?

I am using Bootstrap and my optical and USB drives are not recognized by Windows 7. Where can I get a driver or configuration settings to fix the problem?
    thx

    It's Boot Camp, not bootstrap.
Did you download the Windows Support Software and burn it to a CD or copy to a Thumb Drive for later installation in Windows? And then, did you install the Support Software?

  • Can a macbook pro play dvds

can a macbook pro play dvds?
all it says online is that you can burn dvds, not about anything else.

Every Mac that has an optical drive can play DVD movies and read DVD data discs. I watch DVDs on my MacBook Pro too

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • 128 MB video ram on a macbook pro - enough to drive the new 30"?

128 MB video ram on a macbook pro - enough to drive the new 30"?
meaning, can it do this well???

Even 16 MB VRAM would be enough to display a 2D picture on the 30".
Depending on 3D usage you need much VRAM.
Unless you are using a lot of the latest 3D games or Apples 3D pro apps (Motion/Shake or something like that) 128 MB should be fine.

  • I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

  • Emptying trash isn't freeing up any space on MacBook Pro or external drive. Time Machine is OFF.

Yesterday, while using Final Cut Pro X, I noticed the program/my computer was starting to run slow--and then I was totally caught off guard by a warning that my startup disk was full. I checked Storage and Finder and both my MacBook Pro and external drive had less than 1gb of space each! I usually use Secure Empty Trash and have no problems...but for my drives to be full, it clearly hasn't been working for a few days, possibly weeks.
I'm using a MacBook Pro (early 2011) and a LaCie Thunderbolt external drive. I'm running Mavericks (10.9.2)
I am not using Time Machine. When I look at Storage under About This Mac, my Backups on my MBP and LaCie drive are both at zero KB.
I read through the forums and tried going into Terminal and entering sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash ...but all that did was free up about 10gb on my external drive (I'd emptied upwards of 90gb from my trash).
Right now I'm basically stuck with a slow laptop and very little storage space, which has slowed my work to a halt. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Some space suggestions.
