Lightroom 5.3 into Mavericks import problem

Hello,
I'm stuck. Any help greatly appreciated. I'm struggling to import my image files from an external USB3 hard drive into Lightroom.
I'm running Lightroom 5.3 on a slim late 2013 27 inch iMac, on Mavericks (OSX 10.9.1). The Processor is 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, with 24 GB of Ram. There's 3 TB of disc space on the iMac.
I've chosen to Add a folder of 723 images to Lightroom's catalog and the first 200 thumbnails do import quickly. The progress bar then hangs at the message ' Import Files at their current location.' Eventually I click cancel and another 25 thumbs appear, leaving me a total of 225 instead of the full 723. I've repeated this operation several times and get the same results on the iMac.
I then plugged the same external drive of photos into my eight year old Mac Book Pro running Lightroom 5.2 on Lion (10.8.5) and the 723 files imported fine.
I've tried trashing Lightroom 5.3's preferences on the iMac, but no improvement.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I have thousands of shots I'd like to work with on the iMac's large screen, but I'm still stuck with using my old laptop's small screen for now.
Cheers,
George

I am using a (new) Pegasus2 R6 formatted as RAID10.
I have also seemingly isolated the problem to LR5.3; I just got an older macbookpro (late 2012) which happened to have LR 5.0 - with this I opened the LR catalogue on the Pegasus (the empty catalogue created by LR 5.3), and was immediately able to import photos and video. What is more the video previews are displaying and videos are running when double clicked - neither of which was working in 5.3
It is a big import and preview build - when it completes I will reopen the catalogue on the newer MBP (Feb 2014 with LR 5.3) and report on whether the videos work.
UPDATE: I can now say that the files imported by LR5.0 run fine in LR5.3 - I just can't import the files directly into 5.3. Import from camera works fine. The files I am trying to import are all 'Saved with metadata' from a PC version of LR5.3

  • Lightroom 5.4 Canon partial import problem (CR2s)

    Hello,
I have Lightroom 5.4 on a Windows 8.1 system x64.  My camera is a Canon 50D that's several years old.( i.e. not a brand new camera import problem)
When I plug my camera into my computer via the USB cable and try to import images into a Lightroom catalog, Lightroom will recognize and import jpgs, but it does not even see CR2 files. No errors, no thumbnails. It's like they are not there.  If I capture a single image as both a jpg and CR2 simultaneously it will only see the jpg and not the CR2.
If I open the Canon EOS Utility it sees any and all images (CR2's included).
I've read a few posts so to help narrow it down:
    1) I have write access to the folder (b/c I can import the jpgs.).
    2) My Windows system does not recognize the CR2 files in an exporer window if they are still on the camera (to be specific, it sees that there are files, just not the type and no thumbnail. Not even a properties option with right click). I can't pull the files directly off the camera with my computer only with the Canon app. I have the latest camera codec pack put out by  Microsoft KB2899190 from 12/9/2013.
    3) Once the CR2's are on my computer via the Canon EOS app they are viewable in Expolorer (thumbnails) and can be imported into Lightroom.
    4) I have cleared and reformatted the flash card (more than once). Rebooted and powered down the PC and Camera multiple times (removed camera batt. and Unplugged PC).
    5) As of time of this post Lightroom is up to date.
I believe there is some communication issue with my camera and this particular PC setup. My wife's computer does not have this issue (she has Vista). When she plugs in the camera the thumbnails pop up in an explorer window for her right away.
    Thoughts?
Thank you very much for your help.

Yes, for many people. Recent versions of Lightroom in particular seem to be quite fickle when trying to import directly from camera, and the "fix" in virtually all cases is to use a card reader.

  • Lightroom 4.2 catalog and importing problems

I have imported photos into the catalog but when I go to import new photos from the same folder it does not recognize the already imported photos and lists them as new photos still.  Also, it won't import any video files of any extension even though all are listed on the Lightroom website as valid and usable extensions.  On top of that dynamiclinkmediaserver.exe32 is constantly running, even after Lightroom is shut down.  Any ideas?

    Akrider,
Could you please post a screenshot of the import window you use while importing the files.
My guess is that there are some wrong settings which you have selected while importing the files in Lightroom.
Please follow the link below which has step by step instructions to import the files in LR and can tell where the settings might have gone bad.

  • Horrendous import problems in Lightroom 3 64bit

Hi, I'm in desperate need of some advice in figuring out why Lightroom 3 won't import NEF files taken on a D90. I know there that other threads have been started about this issue, but mine has gone a bit further
Not sure where to start with this so system first: OS Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit, 8GB Ram, 1.5TB HD, Intel i7 860 2.8ghz, ATI Radeon 5700 Display driver series, lightroom 3 64 bit installed.
The first issue is that import in lightroom either A) Starts the import, gets through about 10 NEF files and locks/hangs indefinately followed by the Lightroom is not responding message and lightroom has to be closed down or B) Opens import module but locks/hangs whilst trying to find the images which are on an SD card - this happens whether the card is inserted into the PC card reader, an external card reader or direct from camera or C) Will not even consider opening the import module. The import module also freezes/hangs when trying to create a new catalogue. As it stands I'm unable to import directly into Lightroom from an SD card - and I've tried different cards and brands.
The strange thing is I'm having a similar issue trying to transfer the NEF files by using windows explorer - i.e. freezes & hangs, however after a number of attempts I am eventually able to copy the files over to the HD - although it is so slow.... & back-up to an external HD. Now here's the strange thing, once the NEFfiles are transfered onto the HD Lightroom will import them, but not without a fight. Again in the import module it freezes/hangs but when the "lightroom is not responding" message comes up, if you choose the "wait until lightroom" responds option it eventually imports the chosen files.
I've tried all the usual fixes - start a new catalogue, delete preferences & .lock files, unistall & re-install, update codecs for Nikon files, recalibrate the colour profile, use a generic sRGB profile, update ATI drivers etc
All other modules etc appear to work fine, although I don't use all of them, but certainly everything in library and develop aooears normal
As it currently stands I'm having to reconsider whether I want to continue investing in the Lightroom system as it just isn't acceptable for this to keep occuring and no fixes released by Adobe. I've used lightroom since 1.0 and Nikon NEf files through that time, but since version 3 it has become impossible to utilise
I'd be really grateful for any help or advice, be eternally grateful if someone has a fix or even better if Adobe fixed the bleeding issue!
    Cheers
    Steve

Unlike the end of the linked thread, the OP does not have the problem of a hidden-dialog waiting for input because the import finishes eventually when importing from the hard-drive.
In the linked thread, it is possible that Adobe would be entirely to blame for such a situation, but it is more likely that they are relying on the operating system and the display-driver to do certain things, and so are only responsible for detecting that something is wrong and handling it more gracefully.  The problem might magically go away with the next version of LR, the next version of the display driver, or the next operating-system service pack or update.  The hope would be that Adobe can reproduce the issue, and either fix their code, or at least provide a workaround for a buggy display driver.  A main challenge for Adobe is that they have created their own look and feel for the product and have to get it to act the same on both the Windows and Mac platforms.  That is not easy, and there are likely many bugs still to discover and fix.

  • Import problems in Lightroom cc 2015 for Mac

In Lightroom cc 2015 for Mac, import won't automatically start even though that box is checked in Preferences and when I manually start import the thumbnails are poor quality and when I check on one instead of getting larger it gets very small.

    1. At what point does the import fail?  When you click to go into the import dialog?  At some point while viewing the import dialog?  Or after you click the Import button in the import dialog?
My scenario:  If the SD card contains mixed media (i.e. photos (jpg or raw) + MOV), when I click on File > Import Photos and Video, the thumbnail previews start to load and about 10 seconds later LR becomes unresponsive... this goes on for several minutes (I assume this is based on the amount of media on the card) after which time I get an error message from LR saying there were problems with the following files: (and it goes on to list only the MOV files).  After I get this message, I am able to successfully import the photos only.
    2. Can you import a single photo from a location on your local hard drive?  (this helps eliminate whether the problem is with a specific card, card reader, or mixed media situation).
I have tried with multiple SD cards from 2 different cameras (Canon and Olympus) with the same EXACT behavior.
    3. What does the failure look like?  Is it a lock (Lightroom is running, but doesn't respond to mouse clicks, etc.)?  Is it a crash (Lightroom shuts down unexpectedly)?  Is it a failed import, but Lightroom continues to run?  Is there any error message?
    See #1 above.
    Hope this helps.

  • LR3.2 import problem on computer with Windows OS

LR3.2 import problem on Windows OS
This is a continuation of a question that I posed on August 22, 2010 in the discussion string "Cannot import CR2".  I have not been able to resolve the issue of importing an image into an existing folder location.  I had not been able to work on this issue for a number of weeks due to other circumstances, until today.   Note that the following people had attempted to provide answers and suggestions already:  ssprengel, JayS In CT.
I use a laptop with a Windows operating system and a Macintosh desktop with Snow Leopard.  I run Lightroom on both of them.  The Windows laptop has Windows Vista Home service pack 2, version 6.0 [6002].  Around August 12th I upgraded from Lightroom 2 [481478], to Lightroom 3 on the laptop.  I left the LR2 on the laptop as well as LR3.  On September 12th I upgraded the laptop to LR3.2.  No other changes have been to the laptop or its software applications that I know of.
My current attempts at resolving the issue reveal that when I created a new catalog "Test Catalog" in LR3 and saved that catalog to my desktop new folder labeled "Test Catalog" that I can import an image into LR3.2 to a new folder on the laptop's desktop.  I then deleted the images via LR3.2 Folders Remove function and tried to import the images into an existing folder as presented in the LR3.2 Import dialog, but get the error message "The following files were not imported because they could not be read.".   When I import images into a new folder placed on the desktop, I can use all functions in LR3 e.g. Develop module.  I cannot import images into existing folders on the laptop's hard drive - I have tried importing into the entire existing folders in the following hierarchy:  c:\users\Michael\My Documents\My Pictures\2010  but always get the same error message.
LR3.2 does correctly backups upon exiting each time I quit the program, so I know that there isn't any issue of writing to that backup folder which is contained in an upper folder that contains the lightroom catalogs.  I have even created a new Word file, saved it into the folder with Lightroom catalogs, opened it up, modified it, saved it, and saw that it works OK, so that tells me there is no problem with a Read-Only folder attribute.
I cannot recall if upon the upgrade from LR2.6 to LR3 that I chose to upgrade the catalog to LR3 version.  Would that matter, if yes, what do I verify, how do I manual upgrade the catalog.
History of actions between August 10th that I have taken follows between the [[[[ and ]]]]:
[[[[Preference settings for Default Catalog are set to start with a specific catalog that I call "Lightroom master catalog", it is not set to the "Load most recent catalog".
All of the following were using my laptop:  Previously I had no problem with LR2 for any functions.  I just purchased an Epson 7000 media storage device, and in early August and practiced importing images into LR2, and those images were pulled in OK. Next, I upgraded to LR3.  I discovered that the Epson's images had been placed into a wrong folder when I opened LR3.  I used the remapping function in LR3 to move the images into the correct folder.  Next, I used a SanDisk card reader to import images into LR3 into an existing folder of images, but the following error message appeared "the following files were not imported because they could not be read" (Import Results said  'some import operations were not performed').  I tried importing a single image, and multiple images, but had the same error.  I tried switching the card reader to each of 4 different USB port on the laptop, with the same error occurring on each USB port used.
In order to try to isolate the problem.  I took the SanDisk card reader with the memory card and successfully imported the images into LR3 on my Macintosh desktop computer; so to me the problem is not the card reader or the memory card.  I also used the SanDisk recovery disk while using my laptop to look at the files on the memory card and I could see all the images correctly while in the recovery program, but I have not copied the images to the laptop's hard disk, and have not tried an import into the laptop's LR3.  I did not import images directly from my camera to the laptop LR3 since I did not think it would help with the troubleshooting.
I then ran the Repair from the Adobe LR3 CD upgrade disk, on my laptop.  Then I tried doing the import using the SanDisk reader and memory card, but the same problem occurred and same error message, that the files could not be imported (I was trying to import into a folder of existing images).  I then used the Laptop's Control Panel function to remove LR3 application.  Then I did a fresh upgrade of LR3 on my laptop, but the same error message and I am unable to do any import of the memory card from the card reader.  I then tried to do an image import from the Epson 7000 into the laptop, and the same error message and I am unable to do any import into a folder with existing images.   I then tried doing an image import into LR2 on the laptop, and got the same problem to occur when trying to import into an existing folder of images.  I have a couple of  Canon EOS SLR digital cameras, and the issue occurs for any of the file types of the cameras.
Went into LR3 Preferences, General Tab, I now checked the previously unchecked box for Import Options - "Show import dialog when a memory card is detected".
Connected the Canon XTi directly with a cable to the laptop computer.  Note that Canon's information said that Picture Transfer Protocol is automatically used when the XTi is directly connected to a computer, so I did not need to change anything in the camera's menu for communications choices (there is no communication menu in fact).  I selected one image and copied it to the laptop desktop.  Tried to import it into LR3 into a folder of existing images but got the error message "Could not copy a file to the requested location."  While in LR3, I changed the location of where the file would be copied into - any of my existing folders of images; tried 5 different folders, but kept getting the same error message.
With the card reader connected via USB port on the laptop, I copied one image file to the desktop, and then tried importing into LR3 into a folder of existing images.  Got the error message "Could not copy a file to the requested location."]]]]

I am not clear if by 'import' you are trying to copy or move the files from a location to another or if you are adding the files to a catalog.  My comments may not, therefore, be too helpful.
Firstly, with both LR2 and LR3 installed you will have both catalogs present, but if you try to open the LR2 catalog with LR3 you will be prompted to update the catalog.  You will thus know which catalog you are working on.
Secondly, if you are reading direct from the camera, you should connect using the 'PC connection' mode.
Thirdly, there is an issue with reading .CR2 files directly from the early Canon DSLRs (in Europe named 300D, 350D, 400D).  While they are visible with the Canon software, they can not be seen with Windows explorer nor can they be accessed with Lightroom.
I suggest that you take the CF card out of the camera and copy the files using Windows Explorer in to the destination folder.  You are then sure that the files are on the PC.
If you have the right Codec installed, you can view them with Windows photo gallery; if you don't, you can use one of the Canon software packages to view the files.  You are then sure that the files are not corrupted.
Then import the files to your LR catalog using the normal import routine selecting 'add without moving'.  I have tried this routine  successfully using my 350D using both LR1.x and LR3.x.  If that doesn't work - I'm lost.

  • New D810 Import Problem

Help, please?! Can't import images from new Nikon D810, cf card, into Lightroom v4.4.  Using Nikon supplied UPC cord into any and all upc ports on computer (windows 7). Thumbnails appear but upon import get the message, "files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."  I uninstalled old ViewNX2 and installed new ViewNX2 supplied with D810.  Also downloaded and installed most current Adobe DNG converter (8.7.0.309).  Device (D810) is seen by ViewNX2 but thumbnails to choose and transfer (import) do not appear. Clicking on device button results in nothing but "unselecting"  the D810.  Can't get images onto hard drive to convert to DNG and import into Lightroom.  I would prefer to just use Lightroom as that's 2 less programs for me to screw up in.  Please help?!!!

Let me state that sometimes your language confuses me.
"OS programs"? Is that really your operating system, or programs that runs under your OS, like Lightroom and ViewNX2?
Can you use your operating system to copy the photos to your hard disk? I am confused by your statements so far, so can you state clearly YES or NO?
Your Lightroom 4.4 will not import the RAW photos from your D810. Period. Can't be done. However, Lightroom 4.4 can import the DNG files. So...
Did you specifically try to use the DNG Converter by selecting the FOLDER, not individual files? I don't see an answer to this question. If you did try this, what happened? Was there an error message? If so, what was it?
With regards to using a card reader, this will have no effect on this particular problem whatsoever. NONE. Once you fix this problem, then yes, a card reader will be faster, but not until you fix this problem.

  • Lightroom: Capture time for videos imported from iphoto is not showing in metadata

Hi, I imported all my photos and videos from iphoto to Lightroom recently using the iphoto import plugin.  I think all my photos were imported but I noticed that all my videos have no capture time, so they became grouped together in my collections.  But I think I can still see their capture time in the "grey text" in each photo.  Why did this happen and how do I resolve this issue?  I really want my capture times to be in the video metadata and also want to see my videos in the right chronological order with my videos.   Strangely, videos imported into Lightroom directly from my camera SD card do not have this issue, only the ones imported from iphoto do.  Thanks!

LR does not properly handle video metadata in general, and in particular it often botches capture time.  Sometimes this works:  Select one video, do Metadata > Edit Capture Time, and then click Change All (without actually changing Corrected Time).  If that sets the capture time to the correct time, then you can select all the problem videos, do Metadata > Edit Capture Time, and click Change All.   If you have a small number of videos, you can manually correct the capture time using Edit Capture Time.
Please see this thread in the official Adobe feedback forum for more details, vote on it, and add your opinion: Lightroom: Metadata applied to videos in Lightroom isn't available in other applications

  • Lightroom Star Rating Loss on Import

    Hello everyone!
Longtime LR user, new to the forums and looking for a bit of insight.
When shooting on deadline, I start my workflow by running my images  through Photo Mechanic where I star rate, caption and FTP a few.  Afterwards I typically head home and then import my images into LR for  further processing and cataloging.
What I've discovered is that I will occasionally lose the star  rating on about 65% - 75% of those images if I begin to evaluate the  them immediately after they've been imported.
(Typically importing between 1000 - 3000 RAW images with "Minimal" previews.)
(Evaluate by showing larger previews or asking to just see starred images.)
This problem does not occur if I give LR about 7 to 10 minutes after I've imported the images  and then ask to see only star rated images. When I give it that extra  time after import, my star ratings will invariably show up every time  without problem.
I have taken note of the fact that even when selecting "Minimal"  previews LR will still "process" the files as I can see their color  shifting photo after photo within grid mode as I sit in front of my  computer. It is my presumption that it is during this time that LR is  evaluating the XMP info and adding that info to the catalog. I presume  this because it seems that after LR has completed this process all of my  star rated images will show up.
If this is in fact what is happening, part of my problem is there is  no way for me to determine when LR is done with this initial  "processing". This is because it seems LR begins "processing" whichever  images are currently being displayed. I know this because as I scroll  down the grid of images I see the color shift to begin on the frames  that I've just scrolled to. Consequently I have no way of determining  when this initial "processing" is done other than to give LR 7 - 10  minutes.
I should also mention that I have on occasion quit LR, reopened  the folder containing my images in Photo Mechanic and all of the star  ratings show up as they should. I have then quit Photo Mechanic,  restarted LR selected all the images and then prompted it to "Read  Metadata from File" but it still does not adapt the star rating that is  associated with each image.
The only way for me to fix this issue is by removing the folder  containing the errored images, re-import it into LR, give LR 7 - 10  minutes to "process" it's contents, and hope that when I do go to look  at only starred images it will have completed it's initial processing to  reveal all of those images that have been star rated.
Re-reading this I see that it's a mouthful but do hope that you might be able to answer these questions:
    1. Is it this "processing" that I'm waiting for Lightroom to complete upon initial in import?
    2. Is there a way for me to tell when that "processing" is complete?
    3. Why doesn't forcing LR to "Read Metadata from File" overcome this problem?
Currently running LR 3.4.1 on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8.

    Hi Bill
The new people icons in PSE11 & PSE12 are not the same as keywords. You could use them as the basis to add keywords (names) in PSE and perhaps write metadata to files. Then start over in Lightroom:
    File >>New Catalog
Choose a new catalog name and save.
When the empty Lightroom catalog opens - try the import from PSE again.

  • Lightroom is changing metadata on imported photos

I imported a batch of RAW images into Lightoom 4.4 and see that a number of the images are displaying the icon warning that metadata has been changed in Lightroom although the affected images have only just been imported into the catalog and I have not made any changes to them. 130 images out of a batch of 300 are being affected.
I have selected the affected images and re-read the metadata using Metadata / Read Metadata from File, but within a couple of minutes of being re-read, the metadata changed icon has reappeared.
My initial thoughts were that I had changed one of the preferences and something was being automatically applied, but if that was the case then I would have expected it to be applied to all 300 images in the batch which were taken on the same day on a single camera. I've created a smart collection to identify images with metadata changed in Lightroom and find that they appear to be randomly spread through the catalog affecting both RAW images and jpegs from 3 different cameras.
In order to exclude any changes to Lightoom preferences I may have made, I installed Lightroom 4.1 on another PC and created a new catalog using the default settings. I then imported the same batch of 300 RAW images and confirmed that the same ones displayed the warning icon that metadata was changed in Lightroom .
Can anyone explain what might be causing this?
The PCs are Windows 7 Professional, Lightroom 4.4 (Lightroom 4.1 on the test PC), RAW files are from Nikon D90 and D7100 cameras.
    Thanks

I agree with most of your points:
    Points 1, 2, 3 - I agree.
    Point 4.
yes - all of my RAW files have .xmp files associated with them as they contain the metadata and keywords I have entered via Bridge/ACR.
Lightroom imports these details but shouldn't then be making any additional changes which need to be written back to the xmp files. This is where the problem has surfaced as Lightroom has made unknown changes to some of the photos and wants to write them back to the xmp files - see my comments below about point 6.
    Point 5.
By installing a trial copy of Lightroom 5.3 on a different PC and creating a new catalog I avoided carrying forward any incorrect preferences etc I may have previously used - all photos in this new catalog have been freshly imported for testing. The fact that Lightroom displays the "metadata has changed" icon to the same photos as my original Lightroom 4.4 installation after importing them demonstrates that an unidentified Lightroom process is making changes to some (but NOT ALL) of the imported photos.
The problem is identifying WHAT Lightroom has changed and the implications of these changes.
    Point 6.
"auto write to xmp" - This is not selected in my catalog settings as I want to be in control of when Lightroom updates the xmp files. At present I am still learning Lightroom so I don't want to accidentally write any changes back to the xmp files until I am completely sure of the consequences, hence my main work still takes place in ACR.
    Point 7.
My current workflow choice is to continue using xmp sidecar files as per the following statement at
    http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/photoshop-lightroom/faq.html
"Changes you make in Lightroom can appear in Camera Raw and vice versa. To complete this interactivity, changes in both Camera Raw and Lightroom need to be written to XMP metadata. This is so that each software application can recognize the other's edits."
    - but I have to be confident that any Lightroom changes to the xmp files are as a result of my planned actions.
    Point 8.
All of the default Develop Settings are deselected in my preferences/presets and I don't have any import presets - the develop settings and metadata are set to "none".
Do you have any suggestions on how to identify what changes Lightroom has made to the photos where it has set the "metadata has changed" icon?

  • I tried to delete and reinstall Lightroom 5 and have the same problems. I was on chat last night and got a reinstall. This Am The shortcut is broken and when I open directly it is asking me for my serial number. I did that last night.

I successfully got Lightroom to open, it does not show my SD drive. I added the SD drive (folder) and it opened a few photos but then opened an old catalog. I tried again and got grey thumbnails with the correct Canon file numbers but no images. When I selected import, it opened an old catalog and began to convert it. I recently got the creative cloud subscription and I can open these photos there after pinning.  The problem is, I don't have time to figure out Photoshop before I need these photos.

Thank you for responding. I can display my CR2 files in any program that
will show them. I can drag or "pin' them to the Ps logo or button at on the
task bar and they will be available in Photoshop. I purchased Lightroom
before the Creative cloud was available. that's why I have a serial number.
You've got me thinking I have two "dueling" programs of Lightroom. Could
this be the problem? I have now deleted Lightroom and was going to
reinstall. I will wait and figure out the reinstall from the Creative
    Cloud. thank you again.

  • Can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5

My problem is that I can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5 on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro.  The problem arose suddenly without any known major changes to my software or hardware.  The booting process freezes with the apple visible and the circle below it spinning endlessly.  Every several seconds, the display very briefly gets brighter, then the circle starts spinning again and the process repeats itself.  It never gets to the user login screen.
Other than keeping various apps up to date, I don't recall any recent major operating system or other major software updates, nor have I made any recent hardware changes.  I've searched a multitude of threads and and tried any number of fixes without success.  Here's what I've tried so far (and probably a few more that I can't remember): (1) Repaired the startup disk with both Recovery HD -> Disk Utility and single-user mode -> /sbin/fsck -fy; (2) Repaired the startup disk permissions with Recovery HD -> Disk Utility; (3) Reloaded the Mavericks 10.9.5 operating system twice; (4) deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist; (5) reset PRAM and NVRAM; (6) booted with "D" pressed and ran the Apple hardware test, which ran for about 40 minutes and reported no problems; (7) tried booting from a bootable clone of Mavericks 10.9.5 on an external hard drive, which also failed at the same place with the apple showing and the circle below it spinning endlessly.  ***Oddly, I am able to boot from a bootable clone of Mountain Lion on an external hard drive.  It's Mavericks that won't boot.***
Here is the part of the system log the repeats itself over and over and seems to correlate with the repeated failed attempts to complete the booting process.  Any help would be appreciated beyond words:

    Hi
You got a prob I think, if you can boot a windows, MSconfig, startup options might restore the boot files.Only other thing is to try and either load a new windows and let it setup a boot file, or perhaps a win98 startup disk, and fdisk, then set active partiton, which will set an MBR.  But that would leave a load of work to do, I think I'd opt for an install of XP, and let it repair existing installation, and make a new boot file.
Hope you don't need the info on disks.  If you do, I would install another HDD, load XP, then copy original Disk to save place.
    Good luck
    Jocko

No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.
