Lightroom 5.5 Performance is absolutely Unacceptable on OS X Mavericks !!!

Hi -
I can officially no longer work in Lightroom.
I never had problems before on my rMBP with 1GB Graphics and SSD
After this update everything is going wrong !
1) Just launching LR 5.5 will make the fans spin @ Maximum (No library open)
After quitting it will take 5 minutes for the fans to return to normal.... 5 MINUTES
2) Working with several displays is now impossible. LR is totally confused about which display is main and which is secondary.
I open a library and click on one image - which randomly will display in display No. 2. Sometimes the main display will take 2 minutes to update to the same image as being
displayed in the secondary display. Making adjustments will immediately reflect in main display but take minutes to reflect in secondary.
3) LR cannot remember it own window state when being relaunched.
When using a secondary display which is set to display, after quitting LR, when relaunched LR will be highly confused which is the secondary display and which is the main.
This is totally erratic.
This whole CC 2014 has been the single worst update experience I have EVER had to deal with. It seems to me that adobe's progressive update program has severely compromised its renowned quality standards.
I have tried to reinstall Lr 5.5, delete and reinstall Cuda, delete all preferences etc etc etc etc... no change.
LR 5.5 is performing so poorly that one cannot use it anymore !
If anyone has an idea to what on earth is going on here, I sure would like to hear about it !
Thanks

I have since found different system requirements shown on this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html  This one shows that OS 10.7 is required.  Nice that the system requirements shown on the purchasing page are lower than shown on other pages.

  • [Consolidation-Locked] Lightroom 4.1 Performance

hello my lightroom 4.1 copy is so slow, in the develop module when switching between raw files the "loading" logo keeps spinning for a long time before I can edit the file, and the same happens when I click on the image to zoom in, takes forever to do so.
    I run windows 7 64 bit
    Xeon 16 core 2.4 gb
    32 gb ram
the OS and the raw files are on two seperate sata 6 SSD drives
theres is no way  it should be so slow to simply switch from raw files or zoom in?
Even in loupe mode when clicking on a file to zoom it takes forever.
Photoshop cs6 camera raw does not show performance issues, when importing the same raw image in photoshop zooming in is immediate instead of many many seconds in lightroom.
I tried the optimization suggestion by adobe, setting the camera raw cache to more than 10gb, optimizing the catalog etc... but nothing changes. (http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/optimize-performance-lightroom.html)
If you have any suggestion I am very interested because at the moment it is very frustating to use the software

Hello All, finished a chat today with Adobe help. Thought I would post this info for those having the same trouble. For reference, my specs for the new machine I built are:
Win7, 64-bit; 16GB ram; 4-core AMD Phenom processor 3.2 GHz; SSD with Win, Photoshop & LightRoom installed on it; Nvidia GeForce 560 1GB; photos on secondary drive. CS5 12.1x64, LR4.1 CR 7.1
Installed 4.1 updated viseo drivers, tried all the "remedies" such as enlarging & clearing the cache, etc. Nothing worked. LR was SLOW SLOW, taking 5-9 seconds to be load and accept adjustments each time I selected a new image to adjust (no big deal for 10-20 images, but for 800 image weddings from 2 cameras, quite a long time to wait on the computer!!!) Called Adobe, they said they were aware of performance issues on some machines, and were working on it.
Got on Adobe chat help today. The following is the conversation, with superfluous comments etc. edited out. The simple procedure sped my LR performance up by at least 60-70% in my estimate. Amen.
I do not surf the forums, and this is only my second post ever, so please don't expect me to answer questions right away, though I'm sure others will. I am just posting this conversation so that others might try the same, and maybe it will help them. Good luck!
Help Chat with Adobe's "William", June 11, 2012:
William: I understand that you're experiencing performance issue. Am I correct?
    Jojo: Oh yes
William: Please close all windows except this chat window.
    William: Click on Start button.
William: Type %appdata% in the search box and press Enter.
William: Double click on Adobe folder.
William: Check for the folder of Lightroom and rename it to "OldLightroom".
    William: Click on Start button.
William: Type %temp% and press Enter.
William: It will open Temp folder.
William: Empty the files and folders inside it.
Jojo: ok done. it still has files that could not be deleted for Win Explorer and Google Chrome (the browser I use)
    William: Okay.
William: Launch Lightroom and check if you're getting the same issue.
Jojo: that seems to have sped it up significant;y
    William: Perfect.
William: Please double check if that works fine now.
Jojo: Much faster, but all of my presets are gone
    Jojo: Export presets, etc
William: It was due to corrupt preference that was causing this issue.
    William: Close Lightroom.
    William: Click on Start button.
William: Type %appdata% in the search box and press Enter.
William: Double click on Adobe folder.
William: Check for the folder of Lightroom and rename it to "2OldLightroom".
William: Now check for the folder "OldLightroom" and rename it to ""Lightroom".
William: After that open Preferences folder inside it.
William: Check for the file "Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs" and rename it to "OldLightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs".
William: Launch Lightroom and check if that works fine for you.
Jojo: Oh yes, that's working well!
    William: Perfect.
    Jojo: Much better!
William: You can start working with the product smoothly now.
    William: Great.
William: I'm happy to help you.
Jojo: Hey, are they fixing this in a release? I know a lot of photographers who are VERY upset about this performance issue
Jojo: I was ready to change back to LR3
William: Corrupt preference may cause Lightroom to work slow.
William: We renamed the preference file and it is working fine.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

What is going on with Apple? I've just downloaded their Mavericks and my computer is performing so badly, I'm wondering if Mavericks is some sort of diabolical malware! How can I get Mavericks out of my computer?

What is your year and specs of your Mac Pro?
    How much RAM installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X and have negative effects on system performance.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac?
These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary.
    They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
These apps potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software company's that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!

  • Poor Lightroom 5.7 Performance when using part repair tool

    Hi Lightroom pros,
I'm using Lightroom 5.7 for about half a year and are very happy with it. Unless I'm working on photos where I have to use the part repairt tool to much.
I'm specialized in car photograpy and often have to remove dust from the cars paint work and chrome. When I have to work on hughe areas Lightroom becomes slower and slower. I read that the repair tool costs a lot of performance but I'm wondering if I could optimize something or if there is a workaround for that? Because right now its not usable doing one click and waiting 2 minutes...
I'm using the newest Lightroom 64-bit version on a Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit Laptop with an internal SSD drive. LR is installed on that drive and the Catalogue also is stored there. I have 70 GB of free space on that drive, my catalogue is around 5 GB, my Camera Raw Cache Size is 20 GB.
The machine has 16 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7 3 GHz Quadcore processor. My RAW files are stored on an external USB 3.0 Drive (not SSD).
When working on that kind of picutres I usually close as much programms as possible, so that most of the time LR is the only working desktop programm. What seems strange to me is, that even if I'm waiting for minutes for LR to answer, that my processor and RAM are only using about 40% of it's power. The rest seems not to be used by LR?!
I would be really thankful for tipps or ideas how to improve that issue because right now I'm really wasting a lot of time.
    Kind regards
    Torsten

I guess this depends on what you are doing, what type of original files you are using, and your own perception of quality. I would believe that in most cases, if you do all the editing in LR except for the spot removal, get the photo to appear the way you want (except for the spot removal), and then lastly move it to PSE and remove the spots, that there isn't really any noticeable loss of quality.
I must admit I'm not a pro concerning color managment. But I already downloaded the PSE testversion and realized that it is not capable to deal with 16-bit color depth. Wouldn't that be noticeable after the finale spot removal step?
So, you should tell Adobe this, not me. This is a forum for users (like me) to help other users (like you).
I know. I just wanted to emphasize why switching to PS wouldn't be the perfect solution for me (even if I'm considering it).
    Thanks so far!

  • Poor Lightroom 4.4 performance when laptop connected to an external monitor

    Hello everyone,
I have recently purchased an external monitor JUST to be able to edit my photos at a higher resolution (1920*1080). However, Lightroom performance is extremely bad and the sliders and crop tool are all laggy when I just connect the monitor that I have bought . Doing the same task on my laptop monitor takes much less time and runs perfectly smooth (the resolution of the laptop is 1366*768).
Is this an issue with Lightroom 4.4 or is it my because my laptop is not fast enough?
Here is some more information about my system specs:
The Lightroom version is 4.4 and I have a laptop with 8 GB ram, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU, the GPU is Radeon HD 5650.
My OS is Windows 7 64 bit and the connection to the monitor is via a VGA cable
I just want to use the external monitor (single display) so I use it as a projector and I do not extend the displays. I just wanted to edit my photos with a higher resolution monitor so that I see the editing flaws in them more easily.
Please help me if you know how to deal with this because otherwise I have to return the monitor because it's of no use.

The higher resolution is pushing you to the next higher rendering resolution.  If you are in Develop and set zoom position to 1:4 or 1:8 it should speed back up (each level is 4 times as fast as tge previous).

  • Lightroom 3 poor performance

I read about all of the improvements that were supposed to be in LR3, but I'm extremely disappointed in the performance of it and Adobe.
Today I tried to take a simple catalog of jpgs and create a slideshow.  About 3 files into the rendering, LR3 crashed.  OK, so it happens....Restarted everything and bang it happens again even though it got a bit further.  Third time the charm, NO!... just got a little ways into it when the bits started flying.   I checked for updates...no dice.  This is just the latest crash.  I got random crashes just touring myself around in the application the day I downloaded it.  I probably wouldn't be nearly so miffed if I hadn't had to go through h#$% to get the KockAmaymee Download Manger to work....Apparently it's NOT MAC friendly at all..  I actually had to get to a PC to down load the software and transfer it to the MAC (1 year old PowerBook Pro with SnowLeopard and all the updates)...really! what does it take?  So, if you're about to upgrade, before you let Adobe have your $99.00, you might want to consider waiting until they get a stable product on the market.  Oh, yeah and try to find something in the support pages that relates to LR...good luck.

I have not experienced this.  Is the Library on the MBP?

  • Lightroom 3.3 Performance Feedback

Please use this discussion topic for your feedback on Lightroom 3.3 RC and the final Lightroom 3.3 release when it becomes available.  The Lightroom team has tried very hard to extract useful feedback from the following discussion topic but due to the length and amount of chatter we need to start a new, more focused thread.  Please post specifics about your experience and be sure to include information about your hardware configuration.

    Tom,
It may be necessary (reading the trail below) to start another thread entitled - "Definition of a release candidate - discuss..."
I for one had terrible trouble running LR3.0 (the LR3.0RC was fine), so whatever changed between the LR3.0 and the LR3.0 final caused all measure of upset with my image processing on my machine.
    I had -
Video flickering - particularly when moving from library to develop with large tiff's (80MB) selected
         Very slow rendering
Adjustment brush very slow to update, causing over runs while using it
         Random lock-ups and reboots
Since the upgrade to LR3.2 things are better, I get the occassional flicker, rendering is still slow, as is the adjustment brush but the occasional lock up's seem to have disappeared.
I'm running Windows 7 ultimate, 4GB Ram, AMD Athlon dual core and have lightroom loaded in 64 bit mode.
If you want to know anything about my hardware, drivers, set up or otherwise, just e-mail me. I have not updated to LR3.3RC yet as I believe it cannot run alongside LR3.2 on a windows machine.

  • Lightroom 3.3 Performance/Crash Issues

During the process of tweaking approximately 200 images in Lightroom’s develop module (primarily the Crop, Spot Removal, Camera Calibration and Lens Correction tools) several issues were encountered:
    -         Sluggish cursor response after adjusting ~30 photos
    -         Intermittently having the application enter a ‘No Responding’ state
    -         One occurrence of the ‘An unknown error occurred’ being displayed
    -         One instant of the application crashing
Several hours were spent attempting to define a recipe for the problem resulting in nothing definitive. Issues always appeared when application consumes more than 1.3G of RAM. Detail captured from the system included below:
Platform details (this snapshot was taken when the application had entered a sluggish state):

  • No Registration Code: Absolutely Unacceptable!

I just purchased Quicktime Pro for Windows, and there's no reg code listed in either my email or in the Downloadable Software Purchases section of my account. There's no tech support number to call, and I need this tonight for a project. This is unacceptable.

With all due respect, there's no point in ranting here. As I said, we're just your fellow users.
Of course it's "basic common sense" to include the code. But sometimes things go wrong. Just calm down, take a deep breath, and fill out the form. Apple will sort things out for you. What else do you expect them to do? They can't fix the problem for you if you don't contact them. And they've provide an easy, quick form for you to submit, which would probably be much more efficient use of your time than sitting on hold at some customer support number.
Nuff said. As I said, there's no point in continuing further with this thread, since you've been given the information on how to proceed to resolve your problem.

  • Absolutely unacceptable - no idea when will be con...

I am extremely frustrated and annoyed with BT's customer service.
I have recently moved to a new build property, which is having a new connection installed. I was given an activation date of the 20th June and waited for an engineer to arrive in the afternoon. He did not turn up, so after a few hours I rang BT customer services only to find the appointment had been cancelled due to issues of capacity with the line. I was not told in advance and hence lost a day from work for no reason. The reason for the cancellation was due to the capacity of the current line from the exchange was reached and a new line was required to be installed. Since then, I have been continually told that the work will be finished on Monday, or the next day, only to ring and find the same thing being said. This has now happened 4 times in a row, and I am now in a situation when I have no idea when this line will be connected.
It further transpires that neighbors of mine who moved in at the end of May, who are also awaiting connection, have been given the same treatment since the end of May. They have been consistently told that Open Reach work is going on, and that it will be complete by the following Monday, only to ring and find out that it had been delayed to the next Monday and so on.
My wife is currently 6 months pregnant, and there is little or no mobile phone reception at the property, leaving her practically out of communication. This is of genuine concern that something should happen whilst I am at work and she not able to contact me, or more importantly the emergency services. As I cannot get a believable answer from BT customer services, I am at a loss at what to do at this point.
If BT do not show a very real improvement in service, I will taking my business else where.

    Hi
We are in exactly the same position as yourselves except - we put our order in December 2013 and are still no further forward! Just like you, we keep being given a date, then the date comes and then nothing happens. We havent been told what the delay is, and why it is taking so long, other than them saying "it shouldnt take this long"!
I am absolutely sick and tired of the whole thing to be honest. I cannot see an end to it. Like you, we have no communication means as we cannot get a mobile signal at home. People wont believe me when I say how long we have been waiting.
And of course, no other option than to stick with them - for now anyway.....

  • I can not perform hardware test on 2011 imac with mavericks

I unplug all devices from my iMac and held the d key and still can not get to the hardware test. The Mac store was able to perform it with a wired mouse even after I added more ram therefore I know it can be performed. Am I leaving something out?

Read the instructions in Using Apple Hardware Test.
If your iMac shipped with discs, you must run AHT while holding the d key while starting the Mac with its grey Applications Install DVD inserted in the optical drive.
To force the Internet version of AHT to load: with two fingers hold option d while starting your iMac with a third finger.

  • New Air - Unacceptable Wi-Fi Airport Thruput Performance

    OK,
I'm searching for info - Im trying anything I can think of..... Download/x-fer thruput is absolutely unacceptable on this. Keep in mind that this notebook is made for portability.
I have a very powerful, high performing home network - dual band, dual channel Linksys - Im even standing in the same room as the router and my x-fer speeds via internet are slower than edge speeds on my iPhone Vol 1. I get an average download xfer rate in the low double digit range whether the file is a meg or multi-meg. I dont get this.??
I have great speeds on every other laptop I own. I can take my powerbook w/ Airport in the yard and get good speeds. I can stream HD to my MediaCenter two floors down - but the MB Air?
But here's where Im confused -
alt/Airport click shows only a transmit rate of 50-60 on average. Dropping in the teens often enuff. This changes only slightly when I switch between the 5gHz band and the 2ghz band. So signal is low on the MB Air.
BUT, when I run DSL speed Test, I can get a report of acceptable rates (between 700 kb/sec and higher). BUT when I then try and do some real life downloading, like a simple mp3 or pdf - I get the crawl. The same file being d/l on my PowerBook will blaze.
    What could be wrong?
I seriously may return the MB Air if this is something I have to live with. I want this notebook for the portability, but if I can get acceptable WiFi connect speeds, then its useless. I already have had to make the compromise of knowing I can't easily get Broadband wireless on this thing without a frankenstein looking usb device (which also would require me to eat the cost of a $200 upgrade from my new PMCIAwifi card)
    Am I missing something obvious?
    I run DL Speed Test
