Lightroom 5.6 Import dialog empty on Win 8

Hello
For the last couple of weeks I have problems with LR5.6 import window unable to see any files for import on removable card, camera, local drive or network drive. If I drag files from explorer to lightroom the import dialog opens but the import screen remain empty
Windows 8 64 bit CC licence.
Problems appeared to begin after update through CC but since then I've tried
1 - new catalog
2- reinstall 5.6
3 - uninstall and revert to 5.4
All without success same problem - now reinstalled 5.6 and don't think it was an update problem.
I'm not aware of any LR options that would restrict filetypes showing in the import dialog
I'm not aware of other changes I've made that would affect file associations etc. - there have been some automatic windows updates.
There are no problems viewing / opening the files with windows explorer or photoshop etc. and all the images currently in my catalog are fine and editable in LR - it's just the import dialog that is blank
It doesn't help with workflow!!
Any ideas would be great

As per the below article, you need to update your Lightroom to the latest version and in your case, you have already done that.
http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/import-dialog-blank-lightroom-5.html
I would suggest you to reset Lightroom preferences and then check the same.

Did you update to Win 8.1? If not, install the Win 8.1 update and try the same.
Hope that Helps!

  • Lightroom won't open Import dialog box

Lightroom was working fine, but recently started locking up as soon as I click on import to bring up the import dialog box.  Other than that, lightroom appears to be running fine and zippy, but as soon as I click the button or go through file menu it freezes.  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Core i7 with 8 GB of ram.  Things I have tried are below:
Restoring Windows to before last critical update.
    Uninstalling Antivirus SW
Uninstalling and Reinstalling Lightroom (reinstall was fresh from Creative Cloud to make sure it was the most recent version)
    Creating a new catalog
    Updating HW drivers
Tried with cards/reader/usb devices in and out
Any ideas because my next step is to format the HD and try a fresh install of windows and everything else?
    Thanks,
    Matt

I do not see where you have tried to reset your preferences file. That is much quicker than a reformat:

  • Lightroom 5.0 fails to automatically open import dialog when memory card inserted

Lightroom 5.0 fails to detect memory card and open import dialog. This has always worked fine in Lightroom 4, 3,and 2.  Same cards, same camera, same iMac using OS X 10.8.4. Manual importing works OK, card is detected just fine.

I have tested Lightroom 4 and Lightroom 5 on Mac OSx 10.9.4 and find no difference in behavior.
If you have correctly set Image Capture to auto-launch Lightroom on insertion of card and you have set Lightroom to launch the Import dialog upon insertion of card, this is expected behavior:
    1. If Lightroom is not open open, inserting a Memory Card will launch Lightroom without opening the Import Dialog
    2. If Lightroom is open already, inserting a Memory Card will open the Import Dialog.
I can find no combination of settings in Lightroom 4 or 5 that allow you to, with Lightroom closed, insert a card and have Lightroom launch and open the Import dialog. I would sure love to see someone produce a screen vid capture of Lightroom 4 opening by itself and launching an import dialog upon card insertion with no user intervention.

  • Lightroom Import Dialog

I am using Lightroom 2.1 on Windows Vista and is facing a problem with the 'Import' dialog box. Whenever I try to import photos from a different catalog or from a CD/DVD or from a folder in my system, I only get the option "Add new photos to catalog without moving" and not the other two.
I have tried reinstalling the software couple of times but with no luck. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated.

    @John,
The problem that I am facing is that even if I copy the files onto a local folder and then run 'Import', the pictures will remain at their external location and wont be present within the context of the lightroom catalog. The only way out would be to again export the whole set of images into a new catalog.
Moreover, "Import from catalog" will just show me the photos from the other catalog in my new catalog but it wont physically bring the photos to my new catalog with the option which I am presently getting.

  • Lightroom 5.3. Import dialog

THe Import Dialog doesn't Show THe RAW files of my Panasonic Lumix GH2. I didnt have any Problems with Lightroom 3.
    Did anybody has an idea?

This issue may have nothing to do with the camera per se.
Try expanding the destination sub panel on the R-hand side of the import dialog and see what happens.
Let us know if there is still an issue.

  • Import Dialog will not auto open - Lightroom 4.1

Since I upgraded to Lightroom 4.1 from 3 the Import Dialog screen will not auto open when I insert a memory Cart to my Imac.
I have the correct box ticked in the preferences.

I have performed all of the above and I still can't get Lightroom 4.2 to open to the Import screen when inserting a memory card. If LR is already open and then a card is inserted...yes the Import screen opens. If LR is 'Quit' (closed) and a card is then connected Lightroom opens to the Library, but not the Import screen. I have also tried to delete the preferences files and restart, but I'm unsuccessful with multiple tries there too.Running a Macbook Pro 10.6.8. Lightroom 4 opens as desired—connect card via card reader, LR launches and opens to the Import screen—on my iMac 10.7.4.

  • Import dialog doesn't appear (OS X)

When I connect my SanDisk Firewire memory card reader to my Mac Pro, Lightroom doesn't open and the import dialog doesn't appear. This worked fine on my previous G5. iPhoto isn't opening either... nothing happens at all when I plug in the reader.

Chris, you may have already done this, but be sure to check 'Show Import Dialog when a Memory card is detected' under Import in LR PReferences, as well.

  • Getting Lightroom to Behave: Importing to a folder

I have a definite folder structure that I use which is set in place. I create new folder for each day's shoot before I go to Lightroom to import the images from a card reader. When I first bought Lightroom, all I had to do is point Lightroom to the correct folder from the import dialog box that appeared when I plugged in the card into the card reader. Now, Lightroom creates more sub-folders within that 'originals' folder where I want the images to go. This surely has to do with the way Lightroom is set up in the import dialog box, but first, I don't know how to get that dialog to appear without having images to import, which I have none right now and want to get it set up correctly so images will again simply go directly into the folder without additional folders being created. Is there a way I can call up that dialog box so I can see what settings it has, without having to shoot images and insert the card?

    ambienttroutmask wrote:
Click on import will open the dialog box, but without anything to import you can't set the settings in advance as these are made according to what you chose on each import. In the import box you have a load of different choices of how to import and to where. In your case you would select the particular folder you want to place the files in using copy photos to new location and add to catalog in the file handling box and the select into one folder in the organize box.
I go that far and always before everything went into the chosen folder. Maybe it's that 'Into One Folder" option that is not selected. What it is doing now is making two levels of new folders deep inside of the chosen folder as the place where the images wind up.
I'll take a few snapshots and put the card reader to work to look more carefully at the settings as you have mentioned here.
    Thanks,

Got it! It's so great when something simple can put things back on the right track.

  • Lightroom Crash on Import with CS3 installed

The last two days, I have been importing fairly large shoots from CF cards with Lightroom (Yesterday 147, today 79). In both cases I have received the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has encountered a problem and needs to close.." message; twice today. I installed Photoshop CS3 Release yesterday and now I have Bridge trying to import the same set of photos. I noticed the Bridge import dialog today after LR crashed. By sending off the debug message and restarting LR I can finish the import eventualy. It shouldn't be this way and wasn't before I installed release CS3 (I had had LR and Beta CS3 on my machine with none of these problems.

    Hi Holley,
Just back from a long weekend, hence the delay in replying..apologies.
Since I have now fixed the problem, I cant remember exactly how I sorted it, because I just stumbled through the various menus until I found the right solution! But, heres what I think I did:
    Open TweakUI.
Open the drop down menu next to My Computer.
    Click on Handlers.
In the window next to the menu, highlight Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.
    Click Edit.
Tick whichever boxes/tasks you would like to add to this folder. Obviously, the last one, Digital Images, will be one of them!
    Click OK.
    Thats it!
Note: There is no option to Take no Action. Once you have added any of the menu items, this option is added automatically by TweakUI.
Now, when you put a card in your card reader, the window should open with the option, Open folder to view files.
If this isnt working, reply and Ill try again.
    HTH.

  • LR3 Import dialog - "Show in Library" option when importing existing photos gone in LR3

Please add the option "Show in Library" into the right click menu when attempting to import a photo that already exists in the LR3 catalog. It was a convenient feature in LR2 to jump directly to the existing photo in the catalog. In LR3 I must cancel the import dialog and search the photo manually which I find a not ideal workflow.

    Lightroom 3 dialog
    Thanks

Thanks Sean.  Your reply worked.  I found them in the wrong drive.  Now I'll see if I can fix it.

  • LR5 Import dialog does not list any images

Lightroom 5 is not seeing that a folder of images I'm trying to import has any images in it. The folder is question has well over 5,000 jpegs (it's my iPhone image depository). While I was able to import images from this folder with no problem in LR4, LR5 is telling me that there are no images in the folder. I've double checked that all my import settings are normal and the same as LR4 and it doens't matter. No matter what I do, I cannot get LR5 to see that there are any images in this folder to import.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Antonio
Here's an image of what's happening:
Message title was edited by: Brett N

"If the folder already exists in the Folder panel, select it and Choose Library > Synchronize Folder."
It doesn't exist in the Folder panel. It never has. It would mess up my workflow to have it as such. I only import from this folder.
Try (via finder) moving a few of the images in the folder to another folder that has been cataloged. Then synchronize that folder to see if the images show.
I did this and the images showed up fine, so there is nothing wrong with the image files.
Instead of invoking the Import Dialog first, drag an image from th Camera Roll folder onto the Library module or the Lr icon. That will bring up the import dialog. see if you get the same results.
Did this and it did not work.
Why this is strange is that I have no problem importing from the same folder in Lightroom 4. Something has changed here in LR5.
Here's another image of what is happening:

  • Lightroom and Photoshop open dialog instantly closes

Whenever I try to open a file in Lightroom or Photoshop the dialog appears and instantly disappears? I cannot open anything.... !! Any ideas?

LR and PS were working fine before the upgrade. The installation is vanilla default without any changes during the standard setup.
I did double check the Camera Raw versions and PS shows ACR version 8.2.0.94. LR shows ACR version 8.2. I reinstalled again.
This morning I ran the following tests:
    1) Import a CR2 file into LR.
    2) Make copies - JPEG, DNG, TIFF and PSD.
    3) Tried to "Edit in PS CS6"
    a. JPEG - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back to LR with no errors.
    b. TIFF - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back into LR with no errors.
    c. DNG - PS opened but remained blank, no photo file loaded.
    d. CR2 - PS opened but remained blank, no photo file loaded.
    e. PSD - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back to LR with no errors.
    4) Tried to "Open as a Smart Object in PS"
    a. JPEG - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back to LR with errors.
    b. TIFF - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back into LR with errors.
    c. DNG - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back into LR with errors.
    d. CR2 - Opened in PS (not camera raw), edited in PS, saved back into LR with errors.
    e. PSD - Opened in PS, edited in PS, saved back into LR with errors.
In each of the cases in #4, the edited file did make it back to LR edited and syncing the directory brought them in.
I have checked the permissions on the files and folders and everything is correct. This is puzzling.

  • Doubled list of Develop Presets in Import dialog?

Hi all, I'm running a week-old trial copy of LR3.3 on Windows, and I seem to have a doubled set of Develop Presets in the Import dialog's 'Apply During Import' dropdown menu. However, I just get the single list in the Presets panel of the Develop module.
More specifically, in the Import dropdown menu, I get:
An alphabetical listing of all built-in presets (with no user presets), followed by another alphabetical listing of all built-in presets, this time with the user presets.
So for example, if there are 20 built-in presets and 1 user preset, my Import dialog dropdown has 41 lines.
    Any suggestions?

No, factory presets are embedded inside Lightroom and cannot be removed.
Well, actually, they can, but this is undocumented and you'll have to do it after each update.

  • Import dialog won't open

I just upgraded to Lightroom 5 from Lightroom 3, and the import dialog won't open. I can select File -> Import Photos and Video..., and the menu option blinks like it was selected, but nothing else happens. Any ideas? I'm on OS X Mavericks.

I figured this out. Based on the stack trace below it looks like Lightroom tried and failed to create the ~/Movies directory, and that failure stopped the dialog from opening. In my case, ~/Movies was a symbolic link to a directory that lives on an external disk, which wasn't mounted at the time. I can work around the problem by either mounting the disk with my movies on it or removing the symbolic link. It's not ideal (I can't fit everything on one disk, and I have other software that really wants movies to be in ~/Movies and not anywhere else) but it works.

  • [LR 3.5] An old bug is back : import dialog sometimes doesn't show up

    Hi,
Sometimes, when I use the Synchronize Folder command or when I click on the Import... button, the Import dialog doesn't show up (sometimes meaning here "very often"). Obviously, the dialog has been loaded because at this time, LR is in a modal state (you can't use any user interface element - you just get a beep when clicking anywhere in the main window). The dialog is here but it is not visible. I'm using a dual monitor setup but the problem also occurs when I de-activate the secondary display.
I already encountered this bug in previous versions and I thought it had been fixed. Unfortunately, it is back. When this happens, I have to reboot the system to get the Import dialog working correctly again. A logoff / logon is not enough. Killing the LR process doesn't help either. I'm running XP Pro SP3, 3GB of memory, /3GB switch enabled (disabling it doesn't change anything).
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Patrick

Actually, it can happen that when the Import dialog is in this hidden state, trying to close Lightroom causes a message box to appear : "Do you want to close the Import dialog and quit?" (or something like that). Well, I don't want to close it, I want to see it !
