Lightroom 5.7, beachball of death with crop tool

With latest CC LightRoom 5.7.1 and latest Mac OS on Retina iMac, every time I use the crop tool and try to view different possibilities there is a very long delay. Any suggestions please?

The "open with" command is used to open images that are already in Lightroom in another external editor such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements or some other photo editing program. And you are opening an image that you are already seeing in Lightroom. So Lightroom won't be on the list and cannot be on the list because you are already looking at the images in Lightroom.
Concerning the images that you moved to the external hard drive, if you actually moved them using Lightroom then you should be able to see that external hard drive in the library module library tree and be able to choose that folder. Then the images will be in Lightroom and you can continue working on them. There doesn't need to be any "open with" to do that. If you moved those images some other way, please explain.

i think i may have hit a key or combination of keys that did something in pse. Now when i try to use the crop tool, and click the green check mark... my project that I am working on just turns in to a grey box in my project bin and disapears from the work area!! ugh! what did i do wrong?!

In the crop tool's option bar, top left, there is a tiny arrow. Click on that and reset the tool.

  • PS CS6 issue with crop tool: graphic glitches

I am using Photoshop CS6 v13.1.2 and I'm experiencing an issue with the crop tool. Whenever I use the crop tool, move the frame around and then zoom in on the image, the image becomes noisy, pixelated or has other 'graphic glitches'. I changed the PS preferences to not use the GPU and then rebooted the computer. Still the same issue without the GPU.
Running on Mac OS 10.8.3, iMac 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6970M.
Is there another workaround to use this tool until it might get fixed? Thank you.

I've seen the same issue from time to time on windows 13.01.1 usually only on rather large pixel dimension documents.
Does it make a difference if you flatten the image before using the crop tool?
Also, using the classic mode for the crop tool doesn't seem to have that glitch.

  • Cropping Layers with Crop Tool in Photoshop CC 2014?

I have been trying to find out if the crop tool can be used in Photoshop CC 2014 to crop layers individually rather than the entire file, and I am not finding any answers through any searches. I can't even find a standard Abode How-to for cropping in the CC version. Is the Marquee tool still the only (best) way to crop an individual layer?
Also, I have been looking at a crop tool tutorial for the CC version that seems a bit opaque to me in the way it's written (Adobe Photoshop CC for Photographers), and it refers to a Crop options fly-out menu, but I can't find any way to access this.

The Crop tool is not designed for the job you would like done. As you have seen, it crops the entire image.
Instead, use the Rectangular Marquee tool to frame the area you would like to maintain. (Sample 1)
Then choose Select > Inverse. It will select the area to be removed.
Then tap the Delete key. Result is Sample 2)

  • Rotating with crop tool unpredictable (CS3)

    Hi there
I'm cropping images using the crop tool, but when I rotate the crop area and then apply the crop the result is not what I expect – it rotates only fractionally and sometimes distorts the image as well. I am resampling as I do this (ie. I have set a width, height and resolution for the crop). If I clear this there are no problems.
Any idea why this might be the case?

    Hi Pierre,
Adobe fixed it partially in CS4; crop+rotate+downsample worked on a flat background layer, but still showed the unexpected results on any pixel layers. A very observant and dedicated CS5 pre-release tester (ahem... and handsome too, I might add) caught it in CS5 beta and all works well now.  I think that had been around... jeeze, since  PS6?

  • Perspective control with crop tool?

This may have already been addressed somewhere in the archives but I've been away from this forum for quite some time, so forgive me if it's an old topic.
Anyway, I've recently been on location photographing a variety of architectural exteriors and interiors and would love having a perspective correction - heck, why not go for the gold and ask for a 'Free Transform' option! - as part of the crop tool.  Granted, there is 'sorta' that in the lens correction tools, but not quite the same.

There have been a few posts asking for a better UI to control the perspective correction.  Personally I favour the photoshop crop transform approach too.

  • Problems...beachball of death with adding keywords

Now using Leopard on a new Mac Powerbook. I imported my old catalog of photos from my old Mac Powerbook Pro where everything worked just fine. And now, every time I try to add keywords or change them, I get the beach ball of death and then iPhoto just quits. What's going on? I'm VERY frustrated.

    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.

  • Probelm with crop tool

Suddenly when I try to crop, the crop area is properly defined but when I click "crop" the image is grayed out and in the lower right hand corner it tells me that the image size is 3/0 bytes. this happens to nay image since the first time it happened. Any ideas?
    Oh! it's PS cs5.1

    Damn you are GOOD!
Thanks you that was it. Don;t have a clue how it got there. I never use that field.  Fat fingers no doubt.
    Thanks again.

  • Crop tool, image is hidden by grey box!

I am having a problem with crop tool, image is hidden by grey box.  Using LR4 on Win7.
I have cropped successfully many times before, but a couple days ago, I suddenly had this strange problem.
I assume I must have accidentally changed some setting by an accidental keystroke or something else?
I have tried opening and closing Lightroom several times.  I have the same problem on all images I try to crop.
I cannot figure out why. Please advise!  thanks!!!

If you leave the resolution box blank, whether the crop tool resamples or not then depends on the size units you choose in the width and height boxes. If pixel units are entered, the original resolution is preserved and resampling must occur to effect that. If inches are used, resampling does NOT occur.

  • Crop Tool will only crop in a square

No able to drag side of selected area with crop tool. Can only drag the corners.

Chris, I get a wide rectangle with the crop icon, "Width" "Height" "Resolution ____ pixels/inch" [Front Image], and [Clear]   Somewhere I must have flipped some swithch, because it not allows me to control my cropping aspect ratio; however, I have no idea what I did !!
I did have the options window displaying. It was in my left (of three) monitors, and I moved it back to the center monitor, but I assume that had nothing to do with my problem.
    Anyway, thanks ... its working!

  • HT2506 I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any Preview updates in the works. I find there is a problem with Preview crashing, or taking a very long time to "catch up" (spinning beachball of death) while I'm editing.

I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any updates to this program in the works. It seems Apple is constantly updating its software, except for Preview. I find it crashes all too often, and also takes forever to "catch up" with me (as in spinning beachball of death) when I'm editing a lrge amount of photos. Yes, I know I should be using Photoshop or somesuch, but it's just too **** confusing, and I don't have the time to figure it out. Thanks!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Why is the crop tool in Lightroom 5 so sluggish on my otherwise very fast machine?

I'm running a Macbook Pro Retina, new from this time last year.  It's got 16gb RAM, a 768gb SSD (with about 150gb free space), and 2.8GHz processor.  Everything else is lightening fast on my system.  Lightroom is fine otherwise, but the crop tool is almost unusably slow.  When I tap "R", it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load into crop mode, and another 5-10 seconds to load out of it.
Additionally, it will show the incorrect preview in crop for the first few seconds, so if I go back to re-crop something, it will act as if I am adjusting the cropped version rather than the original, so if I exit too quickly, it comes back wrong.
I've tried what other users recommended - using both full screen and not, updated to the latest version, restarted multiple times with no solution.  Please help!

I was amazed at the amount of info you put into that post. Thanks for that effort.
I made sure Onyx was up-to-date and ran all the schemes you listed. That did nothing. However, reading further in your support thread gave me some ideas. I started looking into third party extensions and plugins. I recalled installing Silverlight a few days ago, for what reason I have no idea, since I trust Microsoft only marginally more than I trust Google. Which is to say, I don't trust either of them at all. So I threw that plugin into the trash.
I should have checked the performance right there, but I didn't. Right under Silverlight, you mentioned Flash. I decided to check the prefs on it, and found that it was set to allow sites to save info to my computer, and Camera/Mic and Playback were changed from "Block" to "Ask Me". I distinctly remember setting those for maximum privacy. I reset them, cleared all the files, and exited the prefs.
I just checked them again, and everything is changed back to allow Flash to have its way. Looks like I'll be uninstalling that now...
I also installed Acrobat recently, just to have an alternative to Preview. Sea Monkey opened an alert box just now, telling me to watch out for the Acrobat plugins, as they've been known to cause problems. Gotta love Adobe.
Back to the topic at hand, I think it was the Silverlight plugin that caused the slowdown. All my browsers are running at full speed now after I threw that plugin out. (Now if I could just get Safari to allow me to back up a page without re-rendering it every time...)
Thanks very much for the help.

  • Spinning beachball of death issues

I have 2,250+ cards in my address book along with 9 groups - I'm starting to notice the spinning beachball of death occurring for a second or so at a time every time I edit an entry, search or move entries into groups.
It occurs no matter how many other apps are running. Am I reaching som ekind of threshold or is there another issue I need to investigating?
Thanks in advance for your time.
    DK

Another user with a similar problem has tried some things that indicates this could be a system-wide issue that has nothing to do with the actual contents of the Address Book database. You may want to try some of the things I’ve suggested there in case any of them work for you:

  • Can't open a new Pages document - spinning beachball of death.

I have an early 2008 imac, running mavericks.
I can open an existing document in Pages, but if I try to open a new document, I get the spinning beachball of death.
I deleted and reload Pages, also reloaded Mavericks. it didn't help.

The truth? That's it, I've exhausted the possibilities.
    Simply don't use Pages 5.
I don't enjoy all the hand holding and crying on shoulders of the users frustrated with all the lost features and ultimately lost work.
I've said it before and will say it again Pages 5 is an unannounced beta, and still is at v5.2.2.
If Apple had any regard for its users and their valuable work it would have built in real compatibility with prior versions and the mainstream MsOffice world and released this when it actually worked.
If you have an older Mac, surely you also used earlier versions of iWork which should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • Lightroom 3 Beta-Image Rotate and Crop Tool

    Good Morning Adobe,
First of all let me say Lightroom 3 is fantastic! I do have a couple of suggestions that might make the image editing more efficient. I find that I use the image rotate and crop tools frequently and think that possibly locating these 2 features below the image in the tool bar with the loupe view/zoom fit/before and after will allow the user to edit the images more efficiantly.
I believe that this is an incredible program and can't wait to see the finished product!
I will offer more suggestions as they evolve.
Thank you Adobe! You are the BEST!

Thank you...I discovered this answer online from another post last night and tried it.  (Since I didn't re-size the thumbnails, I wasn't aware that you could do this.)  After re-starting Lightroom and my computer, the crop issue corrected itself.  Thank you very much for your response.  It worked!
