Lightroom 5.7 will not display Slideshow

Lightroom 5.7 allows a slideshow to be specified but on pressing Preview or Play a black screen displays with only the white stroke lines round the slideframe - no picture.  Slideshow advances as evidenced by the highlighted picture in the Film strip advancing.  All other modules and features work as far as I am aware.
I'm running Windows 7 and get the same result if I try to run the slideshow under Lightroom 5 or use Quick Slideshow from the Library module.
Is slideshow sensitive to monitor set up perhaps?.

A long time ago, I worked at Adobe, and I still have connections there. And, using those connections, I've  been able to contact and work directly with a member of the Adobe Lightroom customer support team to troubleshoot the problems I've been having, both with the Lightroom 5/x slideshow module and also with cataloging video files.
The troubleshooting process was rather complex and took a few hours over several days to complete. It included removing all Adobe Lightroom related files from my user library folder, completely uninstalling Lightroom, enabling root admin access to my Mac, reinstalling Lightroom while logged in as the root admin, creating a completely new Admin user on my Mac, and copying some photo and video files from an external hard drive (where I keep all my original and processed photo files) to the Pictures folder of my new admin user folder.
After doing all this, I opened Lightroom while logged in as the new admin user and imported the photos and video files from the Pictures folder into Lightroom. The net result was that everything worked just fine. Cataloging video files was no problem, and the slideshow module worked perfectly.
However, when I logged out of the new admin user account and logged back into my own user account, all of the problems I've been experiencing with cataloging video files and the slideshow module returned. I even tried creating a new catalog in my own user space and importing some photos and video files from the Pictures folder in my own user space into this new Lightroom catalog--but to no avail.
While logged in with my normal user ID, trying to catalog videos hangs the import, and the slideshow module still shows only a black screen during preview or full-screen slideshows. While logged in with my new test user ID, Lightroom works perfectly.
The conclusion from all this testing is simply that some file(s), most likely located in my user library folder, are conflicting and/or interfering with Lightroom's video cataloging and slideshow functionality. So, it's not a problem with the Lightroom application per se. Rather, it's a problem with some other application or system-related files---e.g., QuickTime, which is used by Lightroom to process video files--interfering with Lightroom's functionality.
The challenge is identifying which file or files among the thousands of files in my user library folder are the culprits, which is literally like looking for a needle in a haystack.
One way to solve this problem is for me to do a CLEAN installation of my operating system, and then reinstall all my applications one-by-one. This would be a tedious and extremely time-consuming process, since I have well over 100 applications installed on my Mac. Another possibility might be to log into the new admin user account I've created and try opening various applications in combination with Lightroom to see if any of them cause the conflict. (Each time you launch an application in a new user account on the Mac, that application generates its own support and preference files in the user library folder for that account. Presumably, by identifying a list of possible conflicting applications, launching them one-by-one and checking Lightroom' s functionality in combination with each application launch, sooner or later, I would find the culprit. Of course, this might also be a tedious and time-consuming process.
I've seen enough reports in this forum and elsewhere to know that whatever is causing this conflict isn't unique to my computer. These same symptoms have appeared on other Macs and on Windows, but apparently the percentage of Lightroom users experiencing the slideshow problem is relatively small. Also, it's now clear that this is not specifically an Adobe Lightroom software issue. Rather, it falls in the gray area of software interactions, which from one perspective is an Adobe problem and from another perspective is not.
In any case, if and when I discover what is causing this conflict on my MacBook Pro Retina, I will post that information on this and other appropriate forums.

I use previous versions of Lightroom 1.3, 1.4, 2 Beta and they work fine. Now I upgraded to Lightroom 2.1 and Masters Collection CS4 and Lightroom 2.1 will not display images. All the images I import are just a shade of gray.

  • My Mac Air iphoto will display thumbnails but will not display photos in any way - single photo / slideshow etc - any ideas

My Mac Air iphoto will display thumbnails but will not display photos in any way - single photo / slideshow etc - any ideas?

    Are you seeing this
when you double click on a thumbnail file?  If so it's an indication that the file path/link between the thrumbnail and original, full sized file has been broken.  Therefore, and assuming you're running iPhoto 9 or later, try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

  • Photos show up as thumbnail but when I click on them they will not display

Photos show up as thumnails but when I click on them they will not display. I get a exclamation mark in a dotted line box

    Hylan:
That occurs when the library has lost the link to the original file. This is a result of a damaged library database file, Library6.iPhoto. You can try rebuilding the library from within iPhoto to see if you can recover the photos by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. However, it's iffy.
You can rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager as it create a new library, leaving the original one intact, by reading the AlbumData.xml file and copying what it needs. You will be able to recover the photos, albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, slideshows, and calendars will not be recovered. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
It that doesn't work you'll have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Hi Dick,
That sounds like normal behaviour with Raw files to me. They usually go straight through the Camera Raw pipeline into Photoshop. Rendered files like Tiff and Jpeg have the Original/Copy/Lightroom Adjustments dialog.
I'm not sure what you mean by History because on Import, there is only one history state: Import.

  • Firefox will not display my photo website properly nor play the music from it on my new computer. I have 2 other PCs and it works fine on those.

Just set up a new PC and downloaded Firefox. It will not display my Zenfolio Photo website correctly nor will it play the music that accompanies the main page slideshow. I have 2 other PCs and it works fine on them. All are Windows 7 Home Premium.

Note that there is nothing wrong with setting Flash to "Ask to Activate" and click the Lego block icon on the Navigation Toolbar to activate the Flash plugin when needed.
You can verify on the Adobe Flash Players Test Page that the Flash plugin is working and which version you have once you have installed the plugin and checked the setting in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins"

  • My edited photos will not display when clicked on, a large triangle with exclmation comes up

my edited photos will not display when clicked on, instead a large grey area comes up wiht a triangle /exclamation sign.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Satellite A300 PSAG0A - Games Will Not Display in Full Screen Size

I have a large number of games installed on my computer. At least 90% of them will not display in full screen size but display in a small window with a large amount of black screen surrounding the window. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. However, I do not think it has anything to do with Windows as my husband runs the same games on his Toshiba Satellite L300, running exactly the same version of windows, and they all display in full screen size.
Altering the screen resolution makes no difference. And, of course, I do select the full screen option in the games.
Also, sometimes when I have been playing a game and then closed it I find that my desktop picture has shrunk to the smaller size - the same size as the window in which the game was displayed when I was playing it.
The games work fine in every other way, it is only this small screen size which is driving me nuts.
I hope that someone can help me with this!!

Yes, as far as I can tell I have the latest driver. But, even this is confusing to me because....
My graphics media accelerator is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family. The installed driver version is 7.14.10.1329. The release date for this is 2007-09-13, as far as I can tell from web searches.
However, on the Toshiba website for driver downloads, the available driver version is 8.2.0.1012 PV. The date is 2006-12-28. I have downloaded this driver and attempted to install it. I get the message that it has been installed but, after rebooting and checking the installed driver version is still 7.14.10.1329.
Perhaps, the 8.2.0.1012 PV version does not actually install because it is older than the currently installed version. I would have thought that the driver version with the higher number would be the newer one, but perhaps this is not the case as the dates do not seem to support this theory.
So now I ask myself, firstly, if the driver available for download on the Toshiba website is not the newest one, then why is it there?
Secondly, if it is the newest one then why will it not install on my computer?

  • The menubar will not display in full screen

    Hi.
I have a strange problem in fullscreen mode, on my Macbook pro 15"
I LOVE fullscreen, and infact the next macbook I will get is the 11" air because of its size and because full screen is so nice to work with.
But I have a strange problem which I can't find a solution for.
Suddenly the menubar will not display it self when I move the mouse to the top of the screen. The only way I can access the menu bar is by exiting full screen (ctrl + Cmd + F) and the toggel it back on after I have used the menubar
This actually makes fullscreen mode useless and its driving me nuts, because this should not happen on Apple software. I would expect these sorts of behaviour on windows but not in osx.
Anybody have a hint about what to do?

Try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Quit the messages app and reset your phone.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it jiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

  • Newly created images will not display in Firefox 8 for Mac. Same images appear in other browsers. Why?

    1. Specific new images are uploaded but will not display in Firefox 8 on my Mac with OS 10.6.8. (Does appear in other browsers, e.g., Chrome and Opera, and appears on Firefox 8 for PC.) Also, other images on the page display.
    2. I have cleared cache, cookies, etc., in Recent History, and restarted both application and computer.
    3. I've tried creating GIF, JPG and PNG, but none show on the page in Firefox on my Mac. I can see the offending image in other browsers such as Chrome on the same computer, and on Firefox on PC. Offending pages are in both PHP and HTML: http://www.brookfieldcivic.org/advertisers.php and http://www.brookfieldcivic.org/advertising_freedom_montessori.html

You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
*Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
*Click the website favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
*Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
*Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
*Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
*If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Firefox will not display on the screen even though with Process Explorer I see Firefox.exe active but no CPU usage

I use Firefox v10.0.2 as default browser on Dell XPS8300 e/w Intel Core i5 & Windows 7 Ultimate and Compaq Presario CQ57 e/w Intel Core i3 & Windows 7 Home. More frequently on the (about 90% of attempts) than the Dell (50% of attempts) Firefox will not display to the screen when I click on icon. When it happens I cannot display other programs. I specifically say display because I believe Firefox has started. To circumvent the problem I installed Process Explorer on both machines and start this program first then click on Firefox icon. When problem occurs I can see Firefox.exe process in Process list; some CPU consumed but, then, no CPU activity. If I click on Firefox icon again another process opens in Process list but with same response - some CPU consumed and then no CPU activity. If I have 2 processes running and kill the 1st process, the 2nd will display and everything from then on is normal. If I do not open a 2nd process but kill the 1st process then click on Firefox icon Firefox is displayed and everything from then on is normal. This problem has occurred since original installation on both new machines. I've updated video drivers in both machines.

Ok, let's see if we can fix this and get it working for you!
First, if you start Firefox in [[safe mode|safe mode]] (restart your computer first, then when you open Firefox, hold down the shift key) does it start up more reliably? This is usually caused by a faulty add-on. If it does help, then restart Firefox, go into the Firefox button, then add-ons, and disable your extensions one by one until you find the trouble maker.
Also, try updating to Firefox 11, it has several bug fixes that might make life easier here.
Just as a few basic troubleshooting steps to make sure we have all the bases covered,
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.

  • Adobe Illustrator file will not display correctly when logged in as a user

I am working with an Adobe Illustrator CS2 file that will open and display correctly if I log in as Administrator, but will not display correctly if I am logged on as a user. The error message is that there is not enough memory to display the file correctly and I am forced into preview mode. The user Home folder is on a server. Other than this, I have made certain that the criteria for opening the file match under both interfaces. I have opened the AI CS2 file on other Macs and it opens fine. I conclude that the problem is with the user Home folder, but beyond that, I'm stumped. Any help will be appreciated.

After I filed a bug-report an Apple engineer contacted me, and asked me to try running java in headless mode: http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2SE/Desktop/headless/
