Lightroom 5 Mac slow to render

Very often, when I open a photo, it takes quite a while for the image to be rendered, and I see the message "Loading" as I wait. This is especially annoying when someone is at the computer wanting to see my work.
What should I look for that could be causing this slowdown?
When I have this slowdown problem I turn off nearly all of my other programs.
Thanks so much!
Here are my specs:
Lightroom Version 5.3
iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB Memory
Mac OS X 10.7.5
Lightoom files and catalog are on a Promise Technology Firewire 800 RAID DS6400
4 - 1 TB drives
I have run the control software for the raid, and it shows normal activity - no rebuilding is happening.
I  DO  have several other FW 800  hard drives attached to the chain
I have a few USB devices, with 2 USB hubs.
I ran a software program, MainMenu Pro, which cleared all the caches, repaired permissions, and performed a whole series of maintenance tasks.
I have 325,000. photos in LR even though that is a lot of photos LR's performance is usually quite good.
My catalog size is 3.72 GB

What module are you typically in when you get this "loading" problem? In Develop, it's fairly typical to see it for a second or so (longer if you are opening the image in 1:1 mode), but in Library not so much in normal Fit mode, but possibly yes in 1:1 mode (unless you've got pre-rendered 1:1 previews).
So as you see, there are quite a few variables which need to be clarified in order to determine if what you are experiencing is normal or not. One immediate potential issue is having such a large catalog on an external drive. Have you tried it on an internal drive (if you have the disk space for the associated previews file)? It doesn't have to be SSD (though that would be even better).
But until we find out a little more about your slowdown (which module, which viewing mode, how long the "loading" indicator is showing, what size image files, are 1:1 previews pre-rendered, etc.) it's not too easy to offer any help.

  • Open quicktime file to play movie and mac hangs and leaves artifacts (screen smear) on screen mac slows down

I recently completed a clean install of snow leopard and added some RAM to my MAC
when I open a QuickTime file... my MAC slows down, I get the rainbow pin wheel and screens and menus that I try to access start to "smear"... leave behind artifacts
ultimately the movies flutter and don't play properly, and I have to restart my MAC to reset my desktop
I suspect it may be related to my RAM because I've never had this issue previously although it only seems to occur when I use QuickTime
... also I installed "flip for mac"
I purchased the RAM from OWC
    thoughts?

The codec info should have been listed before the comma that precedes 640x360. Seems to be a bug in the recent versions of QT 7. If you have QT Pro you can still find the codec name by opening Movie Properties and checking the video format that way. Anyway, since Perian cant play it I suspect you are out of luck in MacOS x. Not all avi decompressors have been ported to OS X. It may be that the compressor is one of the old Indeo codecs and those definitely will not work in X. They will work in the Classic environment but a lot of you folks have given up on Classic. Just in case here is a link to the Indeo codecs for Classic: Indeo codecs for Classic
Have you tried playing it in VLC. If it is not an Indeo file VLC may play it.
The Mac version of WMP doesn't play avi or mpeg files -- mostly it plays wmv or asf files and not even the most recent versions of those formats.

  • Lightroom 2.1 slow at high resolution screen setup?

Does anybody have the same problem at high resolutions like mine 2304x1440.
Lightroom become extremely slow, at 1:1 you can't use any tools like crop, heel etc.
There is delay between mouse gestures and actual movements of tool or picture at screen. I checked CPU s only 60% loaded.
I have AMD Quadro core CPU and 4 Gig, ATI redon 3200 under WinXP.
Is it be because of graphic card or other reasons(CPU,OS,Mem...)?

    John,
I have had the same problem. I don't know why. Sometimes, when I go to make an adjustment and I click on one of the sliders, it will take seconds before it responds. This is not a problem that I had with prior versions of Lightroom. If anyone knows why this is happening, I too would like to know.

Lightroom 5 Mac. Problem with the Radial Tool. I use this tool a lot. I must have hit a hot key by accident because between photos the marquee lines have disappeared and i don't know how to get them back. Without the marquee lines there I cannot rotate or expand the radial tool.

I have attempted to uninstall, empty trash and a fresh download from Adobe. The problem is still there...

How do I import from Photoshop elements 12 to Lightroom for Mac OS?

I never did it from Windows to Mac.
I assume you need to move everything to Mac PSE12 (or PSE 13) by downloading the 30 day free trial of PSE 12 or 13, and then once everything is working, use File->Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog in Lightroom. Your tags and albums will remain intact. I believe the face recognition transfers as well to keywords, but the location in the photo of the face will be gone as Lightroom has no such feature.

After Upgrade from Lightroom 5.7 to 6.0 Lightroom becomes extremely slow. Especially after using face recognition feature. Switching off GPU acceleration doesn't help. Some note: Hardware specs couldn't be the problem, since 5.7 was reasonably fast (Core i7, Nvidea Quadro 600). Any ideas?

  • Lightroom and MAC Pro (intel) after Snow Leopard Upgrade?

I have heard several horror stories about serious operational problems with Lightroom and MACs after they have upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
I have been trying to get to the bottom of it, but all I have been able to glean is that yes, there are some issues, but I can't find out cause and effect.
Since I heard of the things I have not opened any Adobe Software, and won't until I can be assured that I too don't experience the same horror story.
Are there any people out there that have experienced any of these problems?  If so, do you know what caused them, and, more importantly, how to fix them?
Thank you for any help and direction you can provide.

Some users have reported that Edit in Photoshop CSx functionality is partially broken (e.g. Open as Smart Object launches Photoshop, but image doesn't actually open).
With Photoshop (and many other applications) there are reports of the application crashing when the user tries to save a JPG file.
    Source of problem? Snow Leopard
Is it really the problem that some would have you believe? Nope
Are there any workarounds? Ask Apple
BTW: I use Snow Leopard and don't have a problem recommending it to others.

  • Lightroom is not slow!

Recently I upgraded to Intel E6600 with 2 GB of DDR1066 and two SATA II drives running in RAID 0. With this new machine, Lightroom is a joy to use. With new motherboard (Asus P5B Deluxe) and power supply (Zalman 600W) it set me back $1000, but I think it was worth it.
I used to think that LR is slow, especially compared to RSP that I used before. Many people in this forum keep complaining how slow the LR is. I have to say that with this new, responsive machine I can hardly notice a difference between the LR and RSP, as soon as I move the slider, the result is almost instantaneous in both cases.
Here is the article that confirms what I already figured myself: Lightroom is not slow!
    http://www.designpreference.com/reviews/software/raw_compare_b.html
    Best Regards,
    Ivan

Having watched and participated in the speed debate, I wonder just what % of the total who are running LR 1.1 find it unresponsive and slow. I suspect that it approaches the % who have db problems [about 3-4 % comes to mind].
One thing I know is that people who have problems often complain and people who don't, don't often praise. Not that the problems are any less real.
I think that Adobe is to be commended for:
    1. The public Betas
    2. Responding to problems [mostly in 1.1] and fixing most
    3. Mostly keeping their cool in dealing with some very vociferous complainants.
    4. Providing information on where they were heading [within the limits of a publicly held company]
    5. Having some of their senior technical developers take the time to communicate with us
Compare Adobe to other major s/w companies. I know the very small privately held ones can move faster but, ........ I think Adobe is very good. They have their faults but, manageable.
So, to paraphrase Shakespeare, "I come to praise Adobe, not to bury them."
Thanks for your many products. PDF and tools, Photoshop in its many guises [including LR], Flash, and others. [and don't complain that sometimes they purchased the product they now support, it is current behavior that counts]

    Hi jdnels37,
Here are the tech specs required for different versions of Lightroom.

You can try with Lightroom 5, though it is not tested & approved with 10.6.8, if that doesnt work, go for lightroom 4.

  • Has CS6 fixed the PPro with AE dynamic links slow to render problems?

I've got PPro with AE dynamic links slow to render problems similar to those discussed in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/904652?start=0&tstart=0
As I understand it (and I could well be wrong), if I render a PPro project that has AE projects dynamically linked in (anything from simple lower thirds to color grading), during rendering the AE bits run as a service, which limits the AE bits to a single CPU and effectively stops simultaneous rendering of multiple frames. This is why I can get very high render times (essentially no parallel processing), and why messing with the number of CPUs allowed for simultaneous frame rendering, or the amount of RAM said CPUs can access, has little to no effect on total render time.
Supposedly as some point AE was going to be changed such that it used Media Encoder to do it's rendering (same as PPro does), thus speeding up rendering for any PPro project that has AE parts dynamically linked in.
Has this been done in CS6? If not, any idea when that's scheduled to happen?

(I do wish Adobe staff would keep this distinction mind when creating their videos.  When I saw one about the new background rendering in PP, I was interested, only to learn that he was actually talking about background exporting, a feature PP has had since AME was introduced in CS4.)
The distinction is not so distinct, and this is an industry issue, not really Adobe. After Effects has a render queue, which is used for exporting, but you can also export. Lightwave has this, even Avid. The terms do have their own distinct meanings, but of course context is usually required. So usually "rendering previews" or "rendering final output" serve as context-sensitive uses of the term.
Terminology abuse is widespread, even people with video cameras now call themselves "filmmakers" and people who produce films never shown nor intended for a cinema call themselves "cinematographers." ENG video producers are called "photogs" and news photographers are called "photojournalists."
Transcoding, encoding, rendering, exporting....mish-mashed unfortunately, but thankfully most people can figure out what's meant.
Back to the OP - After Effects can be used with Adobe Media Encoder, it's just not the default. You can import any composition into AME from AE and render your encoded export.
As for background rendering....I remember when Pinnacle Liquid was the first to the table with that feature back in 2004 or 2005. It seemed awesome, except that you needed a ton of spare hard drive space and lots of processing to keep the background rendering going...effecitvely your processor was in use 100% of the time. When you weren't scrubbing or playing back, Liquid was rendering previews. Of course, you could use those previews during export but you rarely would have wanted to do so, since it was better quality to reference the original data when compositing the layers and effects to output to a web file, for instance. Then  you had to keep cleaning up the preview cache.
I rarely render previews at all, and when I do it's just a small segment at a time, just to get a full look at the final composite. Mercury Playback is usually more than capable of playing back most of my edits the rest of the time.
