Lightroom 5 not responding

For the past month I have had an increasing number of incidents of Lightroom 5.7 not responding as soon as the program opens. As soon as I select an image, or choose Develop or Library or any other command, the (Not Responding) message appears in the title bar and the application freezes. It does not close on its own and I have waited as long as 10 minutes for it to respond before giving up. I have to open the task manager to shut down the program.
When I do open the task manager, sometimes only Lightroom is listed -- with the message it is not responding. Sometimes other items are listed, too: Bezel and Shadow.
Sometimes in the task bar it will indicate more than one window for Lightroom and when I click on the icon for the program, I will see this:
But I am not able to close those windows by clicking on the X next to their names.
I checked the memory being used by the program and it seems high, but I don't know if it higher now than it was a month ago when I wasn't having any problems with the program.
I do not have any other large applications running while this is happening. (In the example above I have Firefox open, but that was an exception -- I was looking up advice on how to fix the problem. I have also tried shutting down Advanced SystemCare 8, but that makes no difference).  I have tried it with an external hard drive attached and detached -- no difference. I tried updating the program and it says I have the latest version. I updated Windows this afternoon.
I also attempted to update my graphics card driver, but that caused a number of other issues and I had to restore my computer to a previous restore date.
I am running the 64-bit application on Windows 7 64-bit on a Lenovo E545 laptop. I have 4 MB Ram and the processor is 2.9 Ghz
I have no problems with any other applications, including Photoshop CC. It seems like a memory issue, but why is Lightroom being such a memory hog? Wouldn't Photoshop use more resources?
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I may have just solved my own problem. Right after posting this I googled bezel lightroom and found this: Flickr: Discussing The word 'bezel' appears in the taskbar. in Adobe Lightroom
I changed the setting in the view menu and now everything appears to be working fine. I cannot explain why it stopped working before because I hadn't made any previous changes to the view options.
Still am curious about the memory usage, though.

I'm not a "Cloud" member. I just upgraded to Lightroom 6 from Lightroom 5. All was working well yesterday. Today Lightroom will not open (Windows 7). I see the logo photo over my Lightroom platform but nothing loads and I see "Lightroom not responding." I checked the catalogs and see that lrcat-Journal and lrcat-Lock have been created every time I try to open. I have a backup from the first day I upgraded, but Lightroom doesn't want to access it. Should I reinstall?

Well, is the catalogue (and the folder it is in) writable? Have you actually checked the permissions? Lightroom won't be spitting out the error just to tick you off, and - computer wizard or not - this sounds very much like something you'll have to fix at the OS level: it's probably nothing to do with Lightroom or those funny lads at Adobe.

  • PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM "NOT RESPONDING"

I am a novice to LIGHTROOM 5.  Yesterday, while moving photographs from LIBRARY to PRINT, I (obviously) entered a contradictory command.  Since then LIGHTROOM has been frozen and inaccessible.  HOW DO I GET OUT OF THIS?  I turned my laptop off overnight and that did not change anything.

  • Lightroom 5 "not responding"...please help!

I have the individual (not CC) Lightroom 5.7.1, and plenty of space of my computer.  At first I had no problems with the program....but now all I get is "not responding".  This is so frustrating because I can't seem to find a answer to this issue, and I can't use a program that I paid $150.00 for.

90% of the time it's the Develop module. I will just be editing and it's stops responding. It's so frustrating. I have to exit out, which can take a while too. And just this past week...it started going back to not responding as soon as I open it back up in the Library module.

  • Lightroom CC sync not responding

    Hi all
Just upgraded to lightroom 6 CC and when i try syncing a few photos it is not responding. I have made sure all things are checked in the boxes and have logged out of CC shut down and started up again etc.... getting frustrated

Have you installed the Lr Mobile app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone and logged into the app with your Adobe id? Are your photos to be synced in a collection in Lr CC?

  • Lightroom 2.7 not responding

    Hi,
I use Windows 7 - 64 bit OS and Lightroom 2.7. Frequently, when I'm on develop module, I get a message (on title bar in parenthesis) "not responding", which is usually followed by flickering of screen and sometimes screen gets frozen. Any suggestions as to how to address this problem?
    Mukib

Sounds like the OS has detected that the application is no longer being a good neighbour, and is cycling hard. The key is finding out what Lr is doing in these cases. Unfortunately, there is no easy way for mortals to get a thread/stack dump on Windows.
Is it cycling hard on memory (is virtual memory being hit)? Is the CPU pegged?

  • When I try and import anything into my lightroom 5 light says not responding?

Light does not respond when I try and import photos. It doesn't even go to the place where it asks you from what device to you want to import from. I have had lightroom 5 for about one month and this is the first time this has happended. Brad

After months of frustration with this issue, I have found a solution on my machine. I use Compact Flash. One of the pins in the reader was bent and touching an adjacent pin. After straightening the pin so that it ddi not touch, the dialog opens properly.
On my machine, this "is not responding" message appeared whether or not there was a card in the reader. Every time that I tried to open the dialog, I would get this message as the dialog tried to populate the file source. Eventually, after from 5 to 30 minutes of waiting, the dialog would populate. Once the source was selected, the import worked properly.  I now use a USB reader to avoid bending the pins in the built in reader.
The dialog now opens immediately and I can import efficiently.

  • Lightroom 5 Develop Module Not Responding

The LR5 develop module will flash not responding after about 5 minutes of use.  I have to shut down LR and restart it to get it to respond, but it gets kind of old having to do it every 5 minutes.  Photoshop CS6 had the same issue with ATI drivers and, as far as I know, that issue has not been resolved.  The workaround was to turn off hardware rendering, but there is no option, that I can find, in LR to do that.  Anyone else experiencing the same issue?  Any temporary solutions other than dropping ATI altogether?

  • Lightroom not working with new iMac

I just got a new iMac and I imported everything from my old computer using time machine but now lightroom does not work at all. Does anybody know what has gone wrong? All that comes up when I open the program is a grey screen and it does not respond with anything I click, including selecting a catalog.

You need to actually install LR, not let Time Machine transfer it.
If you purchased the regular (non-CC) version of LR, then download the LR 5.3 update from http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates.html
If you have a PS+LR subscription, then click on the Lr icon after logging in at http://creative.adobe.com/products/  If CC thinks you have LR already installed, then you may need to install the www.adobe.com version, uninstall it, log out of CC, reboot, log back into CC, and then try downloading Lr from CC, again.

  • "Save As" not responding when downloading a PDF

I routinely download PDFs which has never been a problem.  As of today I am receiving a message stating "Save As" is not responding.  I have attempted to repair the program but it is still not responding. I am running Windows 8.1

  • Adobe application manager update server not responding

I have installed the Creative Suite 6 Master Collection from CDs,
and activated the license. Now when I run Photoshop > Help >
Updates, the Adobe Application Manager runs, but gives the error
message "The update server is not responding. The server might be
offline temporarily, or the Internet or firewal settings may be
    incorrect".
Acrobat and Lightroom both updated no problem. I waited a day, but
    the problem persists. Any thoughts?
    Thanks, Bruce

I found the answer in another post (https://forums.adobe.com/message/4484225#4484225):
Go to creative.adobe.com, and download PhotoShop CC
This downloads, installs, and runs Creative Cloud
As soon as it comes up running, cancel the download of PS CC
All of the CS 6 apps are ready to update
    Thanks, Bruce

  • Why does my Lightshop 5.6 hangs on opening with "not responding" at top of screen.

I managed to use the programme for the first time after original install. Next day it just hung on opening with the panels all their on screen but with the splash screen still centre and "not responding" at top of screen. I am totally new to Lightroom and set it up using Scott Kelby's book Lightroom 5 everything appeared to set up properly. I uninstalled the programme and reinstalled exactly same thing has happened. Is their a maximum caralog size that is usuable, mine is 2.7TB and is on one of the desktop's 3 discs.
    Advice please, thanks

No, but try terminating and restarting Safari:
    1. Press the Home button
    2. Double click the Home button to bring up the "Recent Apps" tray.
    3. Touch and hold on the Safari icon in the "Recent Apps" tray until a "-" appears.
    4. Touch the "-" to terminate Safari.
    5. Restart Safari and see if your Bookmarks are back.

  • My Pictures "not responding" - what is the purpose of the lr Previews.lrdata

I find that I cannot open "My Pictues" with Windows Explorer (Windows XP) - it sits there and finally indicates "not responding."
What I found is that if I move the Lightroom folder with the catalog and Previews out of "My Pictures" then the My Pictues folder will open very quickly.
I moved the Lightroom folder back into My Pictures but tired various combinations of the content (first with both the catalog and previews in, then just the catalog, just the previews, etc.) and found that for some reason it appears that the Previews folder is the one that is causing the "not responding" issue.
I have deleted the entire Lightroom folder and rebuilt the default catalog & previews data.  Same issue occurs.
It could be a corrupted image file, but once I move the Lightroom folder out of My Pictures, I can open each image (and the folder) just fine.
I understand what the purpose is of the Catalog but what does the Previews folder do?
This is Lightroom 3.4.1 with Windows XP SP3.
    Thanks

Just a guess, but easy enough to try is turning off thumbnail caching:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/prevent-windows-xp-from-creating-the-thumbsdb-thumb nail-cache-files/
If you have a large number of pictures added since your last visit to the 'Pictures' folder in Windows Explorer it will try to create thumbnail images for all of them, including the LR preview files. If you are running on an older (i.e. slow) system it could take a long time to build them.
I also suggest changing your default folder view setting for 'All Folders' to 'Details:'
    http://www.xp-tips.com/all-folders-view.html
If still no joy try turning off Windows XP Indexing Service:

  • LR5 not responding

I went to startup LR5.2 (local) and it all of a sudden did not get past the splash screen.  It hung with a "Not Responding" in the title bar.  I went to a backup file and the program seemed to operate normally.  I did another backup to make sure I saved a good catalog.  Today the same thing happened.  I again went back to the backup and that did not seem to work.  I have tried a number of things including deleting all of the preview files and upgrading to version 5.3.
Up until the other day LR5.2 was operating without any problems.  One more thing.  I finally got it to work by deleteling all of the preview files and going back to my backup.  It starts up and seems to be ok; however, when I close the program and try to re-start .. it again does not get beyond the splash screen.
I have subscribed to the CC version of PS + LR but I am only using PS - have not downloaded LR5 for CC.
I did increase the RAW space to 30 Gig and there is 119 Gig of space on the hard drive.  I use an i5 processor and run the 64 bit version of LR.

Sounds very similar ... I was online with someone from Tech support and we tried all sorts of things - The problem was still there with everything we tried.  The last thing I tried before going the "nuclear" route was to create a brand new catalog and import 1 or 2 lists from my old catalog.  Sure enough - it hung again!!
    So I went NUCLEAR ..
First thing I did was remove LR5.3 and relaod from scratch.  Same problem
I thought the problem might be due to a recent Windows update so I went back a month using the restore points and then I did a re-install of LR5.2 ... SAME PROBLEM
I then looked around to see if I could find some information on a Clean Lightroom "Wipe".  In other words see if there are files that get saved even when you do a program unistall.Sure enough there are a ton of files and directories used by Lightroom that are kept around.  There are also entries in the registry.  So this is what I did ... and so far it is working (I am in the middle of creating a new catalog by importing my old catalog):
I first went into program files and did an unistall of Lightroom.
I then went into my Program Files (x86) and looked for anything having to do with Lightroom and I found some but it may have been from my older versions.  In any case I deleted those files and directories.  These were all under Adobe
I then went into the Program Files directory and there were several Lightroom directories - again all under Adobe.  On mine it was Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 but after the upgrade to 5.2 there is now one called Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2.  To be safe I actually renamed mine just in case.  I will say that the install went ok and so I am not sure you need to save this - but it is up to you.  it is important to rename as you want everythig installed fresh.
Next you will need to go to EVERY user that ever started Lightroom as they will have directories under "Users/name/AppData.  There are 3 directories and they all will have an Adobe directory under them - I delted anything having to do with Lightroom (these I did not save as I figured user files would be recreated.  Rememebr each user will have these so get rid of them from each of the 3 subdirectories
One set of files I did not touch - my catalogs and my backup catalogs.  I figured they are not touched on an install and in fact when you first startup LR it will ask if you want to convert, create, or use a catalog.
I then reloaded my original LR5 .. surprisingly I did not have put in my serial number. I chose to create a new catalog as I wanted everything fresh.
I then started to import my catalog items (thiere is an option under FILE.  I imported 1 set of pictures and then exited.  After making sure I could restart LR I then did an upgrade to version 5.2.
It started perfectly and I began to import more and more pictures.  I am up to 7,000 of my 16,000 pictures (mostly all RAW) and so far so good.
After all this my guess is some file got corrupted and it took out the whole program - but who knows.  It does make me worry a bit about trusting everything to LR when I shoot so much in RAW.
Let me know if this works for you.
    Mike
PS - Sorry for mispellings!  I am trying to do 2 things at once!!
