Lightroom 5 Prints are too Dark - We Need a Fix Now!

Am using LR 5.7
I import images in RAW and convert to DNG.
hen I export as a JPG and print, the prints are fine.
When I print from Lightroom's Print Module, the prints come out too dark with a significant loss of detail in shadow.
Adobe.... This has been a major problem since version LR 1... It is High time you fixed it! I have wasted dozens of sheets of paper due to this problem!!
My screen is a 24" calibrated IPS ASUS monitor.
Windows 7, 64Bit.

Yes, but is your lab making adjustments to the images during the print process? Many do. My labs do not, they simply print the files as they are submitted. Many consumer and "pro"-sumer labs apply auto correction to image files. Most of these labs do not even inform you that they are applying those adjustments.

Yes ... and if you are applying the same settings/instructions in Lr for printing, the problem will persist regardless of the brand of printer used.

This could be part of your problem ... if Lightroom is set for the printer to handle color management by the printer ... and your printer is set to be color managed by the host (i.e. - Lightroom) ... then in actuality, the images you are printing from Lightroom are not being color managed at all. Ideally, you should have Lightroom set to manage printing when you have the printer driver set to "managed by Host" ...

You may not be making settings in your Windows apps ... but if your printer driver is set to make auto adjustments by default when printing from these apps could explain the difference.
Additionally, many folks think they are "calibrating" their monitors when they are not doing so as it pertains to printing. Accurate color is only one phase. While your colors may appear true, the monitor brightness may be too much to accurately render a near match of what a printed version of the image would be reproduced.
As trshaner pointed out, not only do you need to render a close approximation of color ... but also overall brightness. Most monitors/displays, even very expensive and high resolution displays, are extremely bright at default settings for rendering a close match for printed material. That overall brightness level should fall within 90 to 120 cd/m2 and be adjusted as needed for your specific viewing environment and papers and printer inks combinations.

Prints are too dark with CS4

I appreciate that this topic has been covered before but I cannot seem to find a resolution.
My prints are too dark when I print from CS4 with my Epson Stylus Photo 2100 printer(2200 in the USA).
I am using Windows Vista 32bit service pack 2.
My monitor has been calibrated correctly (brightness lever is 117cd/m2)
I am using genuine Epson Inks and paper (Epson premium semi gloss photo paper)
I have the latest drivers installed.
My workflow is Adobe RGB (1998)
I have turned off color management in the printer and selected the correct paper type etc.
In Photoshop I have selected Photoshop to color manage my prints and selected the correct
Epson profile for my paper/ink.
Black point compensation is on, and the rendering intent is relative colorimetric.
I am sure that somehow my prints are being double profiled but I do
not know how to prevent it.
Has any one found a working solution to this problem/
Any help greatly appreciated.

I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions. The first time through there were maybe 100 repairs made to the AirPort Utility.app. I don't even use AirPort, so I don't understand that.
I've re-run it two more times and both times kept getting this message:

Prints are too dark even though screen image looks fine

I have an iMac and an HP Photosmart D7360 printer. Lately, every photo I print is too dark. With older versions of iPhoto I was able to adjust the print settings (saturation, brightness, etc) from the print window and save those as a preset so my prints would match what I'm seeing on the monitor. Those settings seem to have disappeared in iPhoto '09 and I can't find a way to do that anymore. I don't understand Color Matching and some of the other settings I see, but I would like to learn how to get my photos to print the same as they look after I adjust them in iPhoto. It's mainly the darkness that's way off.

Photo prints are too dark

I am on an iMac OS X 10.9.4 and have all the updates. I am printing to an Epson XP-850 with all the latest firmware and driver updates installed. I can print files from other applications no problem. In Lightroom 4.4 and Photoshop CS 5.1, my photos recently started printing way too dark. I use Color Munki Photo to calibrate both the monitor, and also the printer to create a custom profile. I've done this successfully up until just recently. (I hate to blame the latest Apple update but...) In preview, the pictures print pretty well, and if I allow the printer to manage color in LR (which I do not like to do because Epson does not seem to have a profile for my printer and paper) it prints decently, but not great. But still better than if I try to use an installed profile that was working not too long ago.
I have not downloaded new software or anything that should affect compatibility. If anyone has a great idea, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

LaserJet Pro CM1415FN - Prints are too dark!

Hi,
The brightness and colors I see on my screen of the picture I'm printing does not correspond to what I get out from my printer (LaserJet Pro CM1415FN).
How can I adjust the colors of the prints to make them look like what I see on the screen?
Right now I have to photoshop everything (make it brighter) before printing, which is annoying.
There is something called HP Basic Color Match, but I couldn't find a driver for my computer.
I'm using Win 7 64-bit.
Please help!

I have a new Epson R2000 and my prints are too dark. How do I get WYSIWYG?

I have turned off the color management on the R2000 and set Elements 10 to optimize for prints. I am trying to get WYSIWYG. This is complicated by a new LG Flatron IPS235 monitor. It is supposed to have the best factory calibrated color and Fry's Electronics said that it would be the truest, full range color. I have tried changing the mode to sRGB, photo mode, and user mode and the prints are always too dark. I would appreciate any help I can get. I am a scrapbooker working on photos of my world travel bucket list. At the rate I am going, I will kick the bucket before I get any photos printed. THANKS!

This goes against everything I have read about being sure that Photoshop controls the color.
Well, one can't believe eveything one reads. This problem comes up now and then on the forum pages, and we have been recommending to have the printer manage color, certainly not both PSE and the printer.
I have Epson and Lexmark printers, and I have it set up to let the printer manage color.
Works well on both units.

HP z6100 Photo prints are too dark and magenta density is too high, etc...

Here's the problem. I am having digital portrait photos printed at 20" by 26" in. for wall displays on an HP Z6100 designjet using universal adhesive vinyl. The test prints came back dark and with strongly pronounced magenta and red in the skin tones. I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with:
1. Is universal vinyl really the best print medium for this or would some photographic paper like luster or matte yield better results?
2. I am not in control of the printing process itself, but would providing the ICC profile for the printer/paper combination make a difference in correcting this issue?
3. The images are jpegs and the color space is sRGB. Should I convert them to CMYK for better results?
4. Any other suggestions please.

Please help....Magazine prints are too dark!

If I'm honest, I'd say I've just about gotton by with my knowledge colour management (just started getting into reading Real worl color management), and have been cruising my way around Photoshop for several years now.
I've been mostly very happy with commercialy printed output, which has included brochures, business cards, large exhibition banners etc etc BUT my problem arises when I send artwork to magazines.
Now, this has been driving me nuts for years and no matter what I try, the advertisements are printed quite a bit darker than any softproofing has shown. Is there some secret that I am not aware of? that everyone else knows?
So far, I actually made a profile which darkens my screen for softproofing, so I then see how the image will look once printed. I then use a levels adjustment layer, to alter (brighten) the artwork.
This works beautifuly, although images apear washed out, which is understandable.
I know this isn't the correct way to do this.
Both my monitors are calibrated and profiled, AdobeRGB1998 is my preferd RGB working space and US Webcoated is used as CMYK. Ink limits and dot point etc are all defaults. I use the CMYK profile for all commercial printing (which is probably also not correct).
Currently I'm using creative suite cs3 design premium and predominantly photoshop cs3.
Is there a magical answer out there? people seem to love the adverts, but I'd love them a whole lot more if I didn't feel like I'm cheating at something.

Thanks for the details.....would be great if this information was always supplied. I have approached a designer working primarily on Magazine production. Have sent one of the images in question so she can have a look. Will be interesting to see what she says.
I've always embedded the profile before sending to the printers, maybe this is my problem....I don't know...I'm still just guessing at the moment.
It doesn't seem to matter what file format I send artwork in. One magazine in particular asked specificaly for jpeg (these are 2MB Jpeg's). Others will take TIFF or PDF....there is not real noticable difference seen in the prints.
Of course, there is also a substantial difference in the paper that is used from one magazine to the other. I would expect this to make a major difference to the overall final print, but the issue I'm having doesn't seem to change.
Of course, I'm not willing to flush a perfectly good magazine advert down the drain to try out different profiles, when the system i am using is at least producing a legible final print.
Still, this problem is most likely something that is easy to sort out, but that's another reason why it's driving me nuts.

Yes. That's close enough. If you open ColorSync Utility and compare the generic RGB and the sRGB you'll find that there are nearly identical. Not enough difference IMO to worry about.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: IPhoto's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

Printed pictures are too dark

My pictures printed from Iphoto 5 are too dark, I have tried my home printer, kodak, and Fuji. The results are the identical. However, when I import the same pictures in Photoshop CS they print just fine.
I am now having the Aperture 2.1.1 "trial" and i have the same exact problem with my home printer. In addition, some of the pictures (not all of them)are not sharp, they seem out of focus. I have exported the same pictures to my desktop and printed them with "Graphic Converter". The pictures are much better, but i still get a few which seem to be out of focus. I then took the same desktop images and used Photoshop Elements 6 ( also on trial)to print them. Photoshop is printing the pictures correctly (photoshop elements 6 does not have a printing profile for Mac's and the printing is managed by the printer's HP software). I must be missing a printer setting when using the Apple programs. My Aperture colorsync setting is set to "HP D7300 premium plus".I have a 1.8 Ghz G5, OSX 10.4.11, and an HP D7360 printer. Can anyone give me an idea of what i am doing wrong?

in LR the Profile I made for this special paper/printer is selected.
It's the latest 9800 printer driver, downloaded just a few days ago.

The printer settings tell me the profile used is: *systemstandard* (that's german: some sort of default (standard) of the system. Maybe it's the same as the "generic RGB profile" mentioned, but I'm not sure.
I also print from LR on a G5 to an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 via USB with absolutely no problems.
Here I want to print from Lightroom on an Intel Duo Core to a networked printer, the 9800.
I'd LOVE first of all to get a somehow *canonical* statement that printing on a networked printer from Lightroom is possible, Yes or No. (As I said before, it is no problem from PS CS3)
If the common experience is, that one cannot print from LR to a networked (Epson pro) printer, then I'll surely not go on reading tons of discussions to find the needle in the hay.

@ Andreas: certainly the printer driver on the networked Mac G4 the Epson 9800 is attached to is older than the one on my Intel Mac. Is that what you mean? I'll try to fix that.
@ dyp: the profile shown in the printer setting is: *systemstandard* (system default, in german). Looked up Color Sync in the library, I find the profiles folder, but nothing to chose any profile as my default. Where do you do that in Color Sync?

Open the document,
Tap the Tools icon (upper right).
Tap Document Set up.
Drag the margins to the position you wish (the actual margin width sould display as you are doing this).

Streaming Video, iTunes rentals are too dark. Help!

Using a 2013 Macbook Air, pretty much fully loaded.
I'm noticing that movies purchased on iTunes, as well as Handbrake rips of my own DVDS, and streaming through both Amazon Prime and Netflix, using MS Silverlight and Quicktime... all videos are too dark. Or rather, the shadows, and blacks are all too dark. I have worked with display calibration and am convinced that calibration is not the real issue here. While using my photo editing software, Lightroom 3, there are no such problems. It is only the video playback.
Is anyone else having the same issue? I had a 2012 MB Air which didn't seem to have this problem as badly as this one.
Looking for solutions.

I have gone through calibration. Please note that other applications, such as Lightroom appear as they should. I also have a spyder, and though I haven't calibrated this monitor, the fact that non-video applications are appearing as they should tells me that the problem is probably with the application running the video playback, or something do to with the video processor. Also note that the problem occurs with both Amazon streaming, Netflix, and videos ripped with Handbrake, and that it occurs with MS Silverlight, Quicktime and with VLC player.
I read some discussion streams from 2012 with the same problem, and calibration was not the issue. I have tried every built in display profile, manually gone through calibration in "expert" mode, etc... I just don't think this is the real issue. Nor does it appear to be a hardware issue. At least not the monitor. Other applications are working just fine.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

Photos are too dark

Hi! I finally decided to switch to Apple and purchased an iMac. I take a lot of photos and occasionally get paid for doing so. I used Photoshop on my old computer, so of course I purchased the Mac version. The problem I am having is that all my photos are too dark, too much contrast. They look 'normal' on my old PC. Any suggestions?

What color profile do your photos have? If they have the Adobe RGB color profile that can cause them to be darker than the standard camera RGB, Apple RGB or sRGB IECD61966-1 profiles. It's even more evident when printing with inkjet printers.
You can calibrate your display via the System/Displays/Color preference pane or pick a standard color profile for the display that might lighten up what you see in the photos.

Photos received on Facebook are too dark on iPad

Facebook photos on my Mac look fine but are too dark on my iPad. Can I change any settings on my iPad?

This can be caused by a problem with the color profile for your display monitor or color profiles embedded in images. 
You can disable color management to test that. 
You can set the pref gfx.color_management.mode to 0 on the about:config page to disable Color Management. 
You need to close and restart Firefox to make the change effective.
