Lightroom 5 -what is best Mac platform?

I want to setup a new Mac system for Lightroom 5 use. I seem to get conflicting information on what is useful. e.g.:
Is LR 5 using Open GL/Open CL?
is LR 5 using CUDA
is it better to get fewer but faster cores or more cores but slower clock speed. E.g. is a 6-core Mac Pro more suitable than a 4 core one?
how much RAM is worth having. If I am only running LR do I still need more than 16GB ram??
is SSD better than RAID 0 /Thunderbolt 2 drive set, if they provide similarly spec'ed transfer speeds?
I know that Final Cut Pro X utalizes the Mac Pro's dual GPU cards, but what about LR 5? So would I be better setting up a maxed out iMac with a TB1 disk array, or even a MacBook Pro 2014 with TB2?
I don't want to put a dollar restriction on this setup, however I certainly don't have an open check book.
My current intent was a MacPro 6-core, 16GB ram and D500 video, however I am wondering if a MacBookPro would be better value (both with 1TB SSD) and would give me portability, a 2nd screen, and built in UPS. The savings could then fund a TB2 LaCie BigDisk or similar.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should have mentioned my current setup.
MBP 2012 i7 Quad 2.7GHz, 16GB ram and 512GB SATA 3 SSD
MBA 2013 i7 Dual core, 8GB ram, 512GB SSD - for field use
Mac Mini Server 2012, i7 16GB ram 2x 1TB drives - as backup/test machine
1000VA UPS
27" Cinema display LED TB1 connected
Samsung XL20 LED second monitor
LaCie TB1 connected 4TB (2x 2TB in RAID 0) external drive, used for video editing
2x 12TB ReadyNAS boxes for main storage and backup
Thinking of replacing the MBP with nMP 6-core (on order for Feb/March delivery). Now considering alterntives:
Get latest MBP with TB2 x2 ports, Retina, 1TB SSD PCIe
Or just put 2nd 512GB SSD into existing MBP and use them in RAID 0
Or iMac with 32GB ram but has only TB1
Benefits of each approach:
nMP - expandable, fastest for occasional video editing (FCPX),bleeding edge
nMBP - portable, internal screen+"UPS"
MBP 2012 upgraded - lowest cost option, can always get nMP later
Intended action plan:
Leave nMP order active and then use the 14 day eval period to decide whether to keep or return
Buy a nMBP when nMP arrives to compare and then return one or both (if keeping MBP2012)
Pretty much droped iMac option as I don't have free deskspace for a 2nd 27" display, plus it's only TB1
The big questions were with respect to LR5 optimization of h/w platform. The many seconds lag when adjusting sliders or moving between images, is annoying when editing 1,000+ images per shoot, even when I build 1:1 previews and use SSD for scratch. So wanted some feedback regarding what real life benefits the nMP will bring to LR operations.
Thanks for reading...

I want to clean my mac. what is best mac keeper or mac booster  or is there any recommended by Apple?

Neither. I would stay away from any such software. Apple does not make recommendations for any software except their own.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions About Mac Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utility is: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior for defragmentation of older drives, disk repair, disk scans, formatting, partitioning, disk copy, and benchmarking.
Four outstanding sources of information on Mac maintenance are:
    1. OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
    2. Mac maintenance Quick Assist
    3. Maintaining Mac OS X
    4. Mac Maintenance Guide
    Periodic Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) See Mac OS X- About background maintenance tasks. If you are running Leopard or later these tasks are run automatically, so there is no need to use any third-party software to force running these tasks.
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced after Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
    Defragmentation
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. Malware Protection
As for malware protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. Starting with Lion, Apple has included built-in malware protection that is automatically updated as necessary. To assure proper protection, update your system software when Apple releases new OS X updates for your computer.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection:
    1. Mac Malware Guide.
    2. Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware
    3. Macintosh Virus Guide
For general anti-virus protection I recommend only using ClamXav, but it is not necessary if you are keeping your computer's operating system software up to date. You should avoid any other third-party software advertised as providing anti-malware/virus protection. They are not required and could cause the performance of your computer to drop.
    Cache Clearing
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0.9, Maintenance 1.6.8, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache files can cause slowness, kernel panics, and other issues. Although this is not a frequent nor a recurring problem, when it does happen there are tools such as those above to fix the problem.
If you are using Snow Leopard or earlier, then for emergency cleaning install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (AppleJack works with Snow Leopard or earlier.)
    Installing System Updates or Upgrades
Repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Update your backups in case an update goes bad.
    Backup and Restore
Having a backup and restore strategy is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your computer. Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. You can never have too many backups. Don't rely on just one. Make several using different backup utilities. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
         1. Carbon Copy Cloner
         2. Get Backup
         3. Deja Vu
         4. SuperDuper!
         5. Synk Pro
         6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.
    Final Suggestions
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space. Avoid installing utilities that rely on Haxies, SIMBL, or that alter the OS appearance, add features you will rarely if ever need, etc. The more extras you install the greater the probability of having problems. If you install software be sure you know how to uninstall it. Avoid installing multiple new software at the same time. Install one at a time and use it for a while to be sure it's compatible.

  • Whats the best mac to run logic 8 ?

in your own opinion, what do you think is the best mac to run logic 8 full version

It really depends on what you're planning on recording.
If you intend to build a fully featured facility, with lots of VIs with large sample libraries, big sessions, and need to accommodate external hardware such as UA cards or similar, you'll want a Mac Pro because of its expandability.
If you're recording live shows, obviously you'll need a Mac Book Pro, which you already seem to have.
If you're a singer/songwriter primarily going to record a few audio tracks and a few internal instruments, an iMac could work for you just fine, as long as you buy an external firewire drive.
Tell us more about your plans and you'll get more specific advice.

  • What is best mac mini for easy video editing? Late 2012 quad-core or late 2014 double core?

    Hi!
I want to buy Mac mini and don't know which one is best for me. Please don't tell me to buy anything else, because it is my choise. I only need to know what is better:
Upgradable late 2012 version with quad core i7, 2.3GHz, 8gb of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000
    or
Non-upgradable late 2014 version with dual core i5, 2.6 GHz, 8 gb of RAM and Iris graphic card.
I do short videos with a few effects, transactions, fades, titles, sometimes add CC. So which Mac mini do you recommend, guys?

as a windows/premiere user i can only speak to the hardware. 8gb ram in either should be fine for short & simple projects. the i7 is alot better, however the hd graphics 4000 is not as good as the iris and may require running the mercury engine as software only. this means no using the video card to help premiere run faster. anything outside of premiere using the cpu for day to day tasks would also appreciate the i7.  depending on the model of the iris graphics, it may be a couple times faster than the hd 4000 and therefore might work in premiere. according to adobe it lists the Intel Iris Graphics 5100 and 5200 as working  System requirements | Adobe Premiere Pro  if you get into other adobe apps, the graphics wont matter as much and the i7 will run faster.  it is faster video vs faster cpu, which to pick...

  • Whats the best Mac Hardware for Logic?

    I'd appreciate input:
I'm going to upgrade my Mac system. Is a Quad G5, 2.3 GHZ worth the money? Or can I get just as much Logic bang for my buck with a dual G5 2 GHZ, as long as I have plenty of RAM. Wehat is the ideal amount of RAM to have (OK - I know, as much as I can get, but how much RAM do I need to be able to handle a moderate to large amount of tracks/ plug-ins etc.)
    What would YOU reccomend?
    Thanks!

Is there anyone out there using Logic on a quad?
there is, i am sure they will reply here with their experiences.
by way of measuring what you can do, i am still on a G4 1 Ghz DP (state of the art when i got it) and i can manage pretty big orchestral lay-ups with a lot of plug-ins and audio tracks. i rarely have to freeze, but i do try to work efficiently and i am beginning to feel hedged by lack of CPU headroom. lack of memory too - undo histories have been...welll...my undoing.
that said, my lay-ups are as big as i want them and i am only just feeling the squeeze. i would have said you would have to work really hard to get a new G5 to its limit. a quad is overkill unless you want to go down the massive library road (ie EQLSO which would still recommend that you networked FOUR computers even if they were the fastest).

  • What is best mac and software for home video editing and creation

I am about to buy a mac to capture 30 years of photos, film, and video (multiple formats).
I want to then edit a series of videos to make movies to capture our family history.  I know I will have a lot of conversions to make and will use a local video transfer place to do that.
I am not worried about price.
My goal is to make a series 30 of DVD's each about 1.5 hours in duration.
I have a lot of organizing, editing, publishing and storing to do.  I know it will take me a long time.
I am about to purchase the mac and other things needed.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dave

I do LOTS what you are about to do.
I think I can confidently say I have tried all software and the vast majority of video converters. Here is how I do it.
    Computer:   Mac Pro
Movie editor:  iMovie 06, (more expensive than iMovie 11 but well worth the price) I have iMovie 11, but I would not use it for making DVDs.
DVD authoring:  iDVD 09 / 11  ( iDVD has not changed in a couple of years, just make sure you're using iDVD 08 or later).
You will also need a A/D coverter. (Like the Grassvalley ADVC300)
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
I also own an Elgato EyeTV,  it's in a drawer somewhere. The ADVC300 gives much better results ESPECIALLY WITH TAPES.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!

  • Whats the best web designer for mac?

My site, jayapps.co.uk, is built on iWeb. But whats the best designer to use? (Mustn't be flash)

I concur, this is what most professionals use. Dreamweaver is a horrible tool for this purpose, but it's favored because of it being packaged with other Adobe tools and there being a certain level of integration between them.
If you are on a Mac and not already tithing to Adobe, you might like Freeway Pro, or even something basic like Nvu might satisfy your needs.
Unfortunately, I've never really found what I would personally consider a reasonable platform for web-design: a powerful editor with integrated JavaScript debugger and real-time preview that can read actual HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as the native format; one that handles refactoring and changing the filesystem layout properly, integrates image editing, etc.

What's the best Mac config for Fireworks?
I can pretty much get whatever Mac I want at work... My boss is sick and tired of watching Fireworks crash all the time... I figure a hefty processor and lots of RAM and maybe a SSD will help…
I should get a Mac Pro right? Which processor?
    • Two 2.40GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processors (12 cores)
    • Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processor (12 cores)
    • Two 3.06GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon (12 cores)
Should I get 24GB RAM?? Or is that overkill?
    I'll get a 2TB serial hard drive…
I should get a 512 GB solid state drive offered by Apple right?
Or is it possible to get a larger better 3rd party SSD?
And then maybe two 21" Displays… Two 27s seems a little much… or does it?
    Thanks in advance.

Oh and what about video cards? Or is Apple's default ok? (I'm not doing hard core PhotoShop retouching or anything).
