Lightroom 5 wont delete files

So I recently just upgraded from Lightroom 4 to LR 5. Whenever I go to permanently delete files from my hard drive, I get a message saying "The files are on a volume that does not support Trash. Would you like to permanently delete them?"  I click the button that says permanently delete files and it does delete them but it starts me back at the begin of the files im working on. Before I upgraded I never got this message and when I permanently deleted them, it would keep me in the same place on the files I was working on.

It is a funny thing on some drives. I have seen this and if I recall the solution was to create a folder on the drive with Lightroom and then remove it again with Lightroom.

  • Lightroom mysteriously deleted files after trying to convert RAW to DNG

Running Lightroom 1.3 on the MacPro 10.4.8
Strange thing happened. I had a catlogue of 11,824 photos yesterday.
The catalog was a mix of RAW and dngs and I wanted to convert the remaining RAWs to DNGS.
All photos were in place, no ? marks before I used "Convert photo to DNG" command. In the Convert photo to DNG I had the boxes for Only Convert RAW files, and Delete originals after successful conversion CHECKED.
I realize I may have been asking way too much for the computer to do, and wasn't surprised when nothing happened for about 5 minutes. Finally I got the message that it couldn't convert because the original file could not be found.
After that 2,268 files were missing. And as the day goes on today, and use the program that number is increasing, even when not asking to convert.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. Ran disk utility and all checks out with that. And the deleted files are on 2 different drives.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

First step I'd check and find the actual images, make note of their file paths. I'd be surprised if any file was truly missing; just that LR has lost the path for whatever reason.
Second, I'd do the conversion on a much smaller scale- in my case, my workflow is such that I choose to convert to DNG when most or all of my work on a folder is done. So I do it pretty much by folder, which generally don't exceed a few hundred images.

  • OSX Lion, Lightroom 3 & deleted files: could be a bug?

I've a library saved inside an external HD.
Normally I work with this catalog, selecting the photos and elaborating the images.
Last week I've made the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion and today I've found that if I try to delete an image, LR tell me that is impossible, because the disc does not support a trash bin (???) and so I've only the possibility to remove the photo permanently from the HD.
but if I create a new document inside the HD, the system let me delete it and move it inside the trash bin without any problem.
So I've taken another HD, formatted with HFS+ Journaled, I've created a new catalog, imported some photos...same problem, same story...LR doesn't let me delete the images but only definitively removing teh photos from the HD.
This could be a bug from LR with Lion?

Lion is great, but this is the one and only problem I have left with Lion, exactly the same problem you are experiencing with LR 3.

I have posted this same problem in the LR forums and as yet have not found an answer other than to take the drastic step of 'Delete Files Anyway?' and then seeing that the files are indeed removed from the library and then indeed also that the files have been removed from the disk, BUT (and this is a big BUT) there are no files in the trash, even though you would expect that if you delete the files, LR allows you to delete and move them to the trash. With Lion, they simply diappear - so my question is: Are the files deleted? or are they dumped somewhere invisible that I don't know about to accumulate on the disk somewhere?
It would be good to know...
It' would be good if they were simply moved to the trash like they were with LR2.

  • Lightroom WONT delete photos from disk

I understand the diffrencce between deleting a photo from LR verses completely deleting from the disk.
However when I try to "delete a photo from disk" through light room it remains on my disk no matter what i do.
I do click the option "delete from disk" verses "remove" from LR
any ideas on what is happening here?

Um, very interesting. I have my images located on an EHD and backed up to another EHD (thank heavens) because something very strange happened today which I believe now explains previously lost images. With LR open but no editing taking place I happened to look inside the Recycle Bin (Windows). Low and behold within the Bin were six images that were previously contained within the catalogue and somehow mysteriously relocated to the Recycle Bin. Reducing LR's on-screen window size I then expanded the Recycle Bin window so now I had both open on screen. Upon exiting LR the icons for the missing images disappeared from the Recycle Bin so the question is, were they never there really, were the icons in the Bin simply ghosts or did LR simply delete images of it's own free will? Either way, I never now leave LR open whilst doing other work, and most certainly when empyting the Recycle Bin.
And yes, briefly back OT - I too have noticed on many an occasion LR not deleting images from disk when requested, only from the catalogue. In this instance what I do is a fresh import which of course shows these images as being the latest import at the top of the tree and with only these images shown in the main library window. When selecting all and opting for Delete from Disk they are in fact completely deleted and end up in the Recycle Bin.

  • Cannot delete files from batch file

    This is a test case.
If  have the following in a .bat file. If I run it from CMD box, it works fine.
    forfiles /P c:\scripts\ /S /M u_ex*.log  /C "cmd /c del @PATH" > c:\scripts\output.txt
But If I run it from a scheduled task, it generates the output.txt file which contains a list of the files it SHOULD have deleted, but nothing gets deleted.
The scheduled task runs as a user who is member of administrators group, so has full permissions.
I have also checked the box "run with highest privileges"
anyone know why it wont delete files from a scheduled task ?

  • Deleting files which are offline.

What is the best way to get Lightroom to delete files which are offline? I don't use lightroom as a database or DAM - for that i use iMatch. I use lightroom only to process the raws and hate to see the thumb files with a question mark on them when they are really not available locally.
Sometimes i wish lightroom behaves like the photoshop bridge program in that it will display only files that are available but i understand that lightroom does what it does because it also acts as a DAM program - that's why it still keeps the thumb files even though they don't really exist locally. But i don't want to see them if they are not available - is this possible and what's the best way to batch delete all question-marked files? Thank-you.

Of course doing as John suggests mean all edits, history, snapshots, collection information, virtual copies are gone, gone, gone.
As you've said yourself, Lightroom is a database, not an browser and having access to offline files is a reason why people use Lightroom. Missing file handling could be better, but if you want to files on a missing volume, click on the Volume browser to close the folder view. Of course you'll still see the missing files in collection.

  • Can't delete files and need to restart lightroom

    hello
have you ever seen this problem?
when using lightroom 1.3.1 on PC, I can't delete files. Lightroom doesn't work and i need to restart the program.
    Thanks for your answers

having same problem here. I used to have the option to delete, but it seems to have dissapeared. I can delete but if I look in recycle its not there. If I go to undo, it says my last action was to delete the keyword which also removed it from the catalog. weird............

  • Some files in my trash wont delete??? Aaaaah!

Hi. I have deleted some applications using an application delete program and there are some files in my trash that just wont delete. Is says the file localized.rsrc is in use and the operation cannot be competed.
Has anyone got any advice on how i would delete these files.
    Thanks, Ben

    Hi Ben,
Open Activity Monitor and see if there is anything still running relevant to the deleted apps and quit the process(es) from there or:
Start up in Safe Mode and see if you can empty the trash then.
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup.
    Good luck.

  • Deleting files permanently through LightRoom on external drive

My LR files are stored on an external drive and the drive is called Buffalo NAS and it has a "trashbox" for deleted files.  My IT says I should clean out the trashbox using LR and I can not figure out how to do this.  I do not want deleted files eating up hard drive space on the external.  This forum as been great for answering my other questions and I thank all in advance who might help with this.
    JWT

    Hi JWT
LR only manages the folders you have selected for import and development (editing).
If you want to use LR to delete “managed” folders it’s possible to select them in the Library (Folders tab) and then remove and optionally delete from your hard drive or NAS.

I've installed Arch with Gnome 3 into my ThinkPad T520 with following configuration:
SSD formatted partitionless with btrfs filesystem.
I created 10 subvolume to organize my files.
    mount /dev/sda /mnt/hdd
    btrfs subvol list /mnt/hdd

ID 288 gen 3506 top level 5 path _software
    ID 430 gen 2338 top level 5 path _snapshots/arch-2014-04-05
Then mount that sobvolumes to directory inside my /home
    cat /etc/fstab

All nice and well, except one thing. When i delete files originally locate in subvolumes but mounted to my /home, the files gone but not showing in the trash.
Instead, deleted files moved to hidden folder named .Trash-1000.
If that sound confussing, let me give an example, when i delete file from /home/iza then that file gone and showing up in the trash. But, when i delete a file from /home/iza/Documents then that file is gone but not showing in the trash but moved to /home/iza/Documents/.Trash-1000.
Is this a bug in btrfs or because my messy mountpoint/fstab?
    Thanx

If you delete a file on a different partition; a .Trash-1000 (where the last part is your userid) directory is created (in the root of the partition); it will contain the file. Gnome should apparently traverse all partitions to merge all these files and show them in the 'Trash'; somehow that doesn't work. Can you check if a .Trash-1000 folder exists on all partitions you created? If they do, the problem is in Gnome not properly populating them.
The same issue is described here, without a solution unfortunately: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40580 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=785512

Type Media in finder you may find those deleted files still have a connection there. Careful you don't delete the wrong ones because they're gone. anoka114
