Lightroom 6 Catalog issues

I've been saving my catalog in Lightroom 6 on a regular basis and have had no problem clicking on the Lightroom 6 icon to continue working until today.  None of my backups will open other than the 5.7.1 catalog which I would have to update to 6 again.  When I view my version 6 catalogs I see a folder with a zipper which implies the folder info is in ZIP format.  How does one open these folders and what did I do wrong to get to this problem in the first place?
Don

The standard LR 6 catalog file is not a ZIP file. Those ZIP files are Back Ups of the original catalog. Do a search of your HDD for *.lrcat (The Star(*) is a wild card character and may not be needed in Windows or Mac Spotlight search system). That will turn up the original, standard, default, LR catalog file.
When you say you have been SAVING your LR catalog what exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean Backing it Up? You can't really SAVE the catalog. There is no Save or Save As in the File menu item and to my knowledge Ctrl + S or Ctrl + Shift + S do nothing. It saved automatically every time you add something to it, make changes to the user/program Preferences/Options or to the catalog settings.

  • Lightroom 5 Catalog Issues

I've been a LR user since v2 and I've never had any significant catalog issues until LR5.  This isn't so much of a question, more of a statement which I am hoping someone at Adobe reads.  The issues I've recently encountered are as follows...
Issue 1)  LR5 fails to import Panoramas created in Photoshop CC
    - Select several photos in LR5, right-click and select Merge to Panorama in Photoshop.
    - Once pano is created, click save in Photoshop and then exit.
    - Merged photos fail to appear in LR5.
    - In Finder, navigate to folder and verify newly created panos are saved (as PSDs) in the same folder as source images = Yes
    - In Photoshop, verify "Maximize Compaitibility" setting is checked = Yes
    - In LR open the Import dialog to attempt to import the missing Pano just created.  The pano image is found but is grayed out and I am presented with a message that the photo already exists in the library.
    - Attempt to syncronize folder... LR thinks all 10 photos are missing but sees 11 new photos to add (11 because the of the pano).  Syncronization removes the 10, then adds them back to the catalog but fails to add the 11th, the Pano file.  Successive attempts at sychronizing the folders yield the exact same results (see Issue 2).
Issue 2)  LR5 thinks all my photos are missing (photo missing message under histogram)
    - Attempts to syncronize a folder yield 100 missing photo and 100 new photos found (100 is just an example).
    - Syncronization removes the missing photos and adds the exact same photo right back to the catalog, however the problems persists.
    - Successive attempts to synchronize the folder yield the exact same results (100 photos missing and removed, 100 new photos added).  LR is stuck in a loop.
Issue 3) LR5 not creating the correct folder in my folder structure on import.
    - Import is configured to create a new folder for each day (e.g. 2013-07-25) within a year folder (e.g 2013).
    - Upon import LR5 tells confirms it will create a 2013-07-25 folder within the 2013 folder, however upon import the it is actually created in the root photos folder at the same level at the 2013 folder.  In other words, Photos/2013-07-25/ instead of Photos/2013/2013-07-25.
No photos were ever moved.  No changes to the folder structure were made inside or outside of LR.  And no changes to import pre-sets have been made.
I've seen issue number 2 on two seperate computers with completely different catalogs.
I was able to resolve my issues somewhat by importing new photos and manually specifying where in my 2013 folder they are to be stored.  Doing so seemed to remind LR where my photos were and the issues listed above appear to be resolved for now.  That said, I am still receiving the "Photo is Missing" error under the histogram, although the photo counts when I attempt to synchronize the folder(s) are now correct (0 photos missing, 0 new photos to add).

This has been where Adobe asked people to post bugs but with the demise of the online photo hosting photoshop.com website that shares the same domain name, new user creating may not be working, but you can try:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family
Issue 2) is something I’ve seen—the erroneous Missing Photos indication even though I was working on the photos, and exporting them and printing them just fine, without ever having created a smart preview.  I’m glad I read this because I might not have thought about doing a synchronization and having LR5 removing and re-adding the photos, wiping out my edit history.   I can say that the photos I saw as missing, before, are now properly indicated as online so it may be a temporary condition that can be remedied by restarting LR or restarting the computer, though I’ve not really investigated carefully, since it only happened once.

  • Lightroom wont startup, catalog issue?

When I try to launch Lightroom5, i get a box with "Confirm" at the top and the following inside:
The Lightroom catalog named "Lighroom 5 Catalof" cannot be opened because it is not valid. Would you like to select a different catalog?
THe catalog is not recognized as a valid catalog.
The catalog can be found at
    C:\Users\(mycomputer)\Pictures\....\Lightroom5 Catalog.lrcat
Options given as a button is "Choose a different Catalog"    "Exit"
I have tried to choose another, but nothing I have picked works.
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!  It worked just fine last week!
Please and thankyou for any help,
    B

Went from bad to worse, eh?
Removing toolbar crap shouldn't do it, but ya never know...
Once upon a time, a left-over lock file would keep Lr from starting, but Lr5 is much smarter in that regard (it checks whether the lock corresponds to a real instance of Lr already running, or is just a bogus "left-over" lock file).
Anyway, I'd definitely try re-installing Lightroom, if rebooting your machine doesn't help.
PS - Install Lr5.2 from a download, rather than the CD version (assuming it's 5.0) - it's less buggy.

  • Importing into lightroom catalog on a mac

I just moved my lightroom catalog on an external drive to a mac from a pc.  I got the entire catalog moved with no issues or problems except for this.  When I try to import new photos i get a message saying that the file cannont be read and that the files were not imported.  Has anyone else run into this issue while using a mac?  Thanks for any help

How did you format the external drive?  It needs to be FAT32 if you want it to be able to be read and written by both PC and Mac.  Sometimes when LR says "cannot be read" it also or instead means "cannot be written".

  • Lightroom catalog not complete

I'm in a bit of a pickle. Yesterday I installed OSXC yosemite on my iMac 2013. Prior to doing this I opened lightroom and backed up my catalog, which is stored along with all my pictures on an external thunderbolt drive.
I installed yosemite clean, meaning I formatted my hard drive. installed lightroom and told it to open my catalog which is on the external.
the problem is when it opened, it was missing about 6 months of work and files?? it was not up to date??
i right click on the folder and tell it to synchronize. so indeed all files are there but the main issue is all those presets, changes i made to each file are gone.
it means I now have to redo all the work on the original files, cropping, exposure and all that.
is there a way to get it all back?
why did it not pickup exactly where it left off - which is what i expected
any help is very much appreciated as I've lost over 6 months of work
again, files all seem to be intact but the actual work done to the image is gone.

When i open lightroom, prior to installing and updating to yosemite, it would open the catalog stored on the external drive.
the date on that file is 10-17-2014, thus current.
my lightroom catalog is stored on the external drive, same place where all my pictures are.
as for backups, they are identical, same issue.
i dont understand why lightroom when opening my catalog on 10-17 was fine but when i update to yosemite and open exact same catalog its missing 6 months of information, despite the fact date on catalog is 10-17 and is same file on same location on an external drive.
i tried a backup file and same thing.

  • Lightroom Catalog is Huge

I have 129,980 in my lightroom catalog.  The photos go back to January 2000 and are only about 350GB but this previews file is over 116GB.   This seems excessive.
Is the alternative to simply take a moment to build previews when I go to a folder?  Most of my folders are pretty small.

    PictureTakerGuy wrote:
My concern is both wasted space and disk overhead.  120GB seems like a high percentage of overhead for a 350GB collection.  Especially when I consider I might never edit many of the photos there.
If you've got a number in mind that's too much, then there's a problem.
Many people don't worry until there's a performance issue, in which case it doesn't sound like there's a problem.
I'm coming from ACDSee world where there was little overhead and blazing fast photo thumbnails created when you went into a directory.
How would I do same in LR. I like LR and I'm not trying to bash it. I just don't feel comfortable with the amount of wasted space where I need to back it up, etc.
You need to understand that these are two very different programs which operate under very different principles. If you want the fastest performance out of Lightroom, then I think you want to have the largest possible previews, and they are left on your hard disk forever and beyond.
When I run WinDirStat it takes forever to even figure out how many files are in that catalog. It takes less time to get the pictures counted than the catalog or preview files.
Time it takes WinDirStat to finish? Hmmm ... I have never seen anyone complain about that before. Seems like you are inventing a problem. Lightroom is designed to produce a lot of preview files.

  • Strange Catalog Issue or bug. Help, photos disappeared help?

My images disappeared in the catalog. They are not missing, they are just not visable. I think there is a bug in the Fliter section.
Let me explain. I have one Main folder with 5 Sub folders. All those folders contain random amounts of images. (i.e. the path would be...  Photo/2010/BeachShoot, or Photo/2008/PartyPics... etc).
I imported 5 years of images, hence 5 Sub Folders. I was randomly flagging images to be rejected with the 'x' key. Basically routine maintenance... flag so many, then call up only the rejected photos in the grid view, select all, then delete. Remove the Flag Filter... repeat process over and over...   Basic, simple work...
Now... doing the exact some thing.. I removed all Flag filters and my images are no longer appearing in the catalog. I tested, by turning on flags, off flags.. etc. The images did not accidentally get deleted. I checked my hard drive location. Images are there. I rebooted the machine, I opened up another catalog, to trick it back... did not work. I tried to re-import the images.. but it says they are already in the catalog.
Strange part: On the Left Sidebar window, under Catalog "All Photographs" it shows the correct number of photos in the catalog. However... the strange part... Under "Folders" in the Left Sidebar beneath Catalogs my Main Folder shows "Zero" number of images. But, if I click on a sub root folder where the images reside, they number changes from Zero to the correct number of images and my images reappear on the screen as normal..
The work around... click on every subfolder...
    The solution... Unsure? Help!

  • Lightroom catalog question

    hi,
i need advice on the issue i encountered with importing a catalog into LR 2.5 and LR 2.6.
i recently deleted a catalog file from a laptop hard drive. i used laptop on my recent trip and upon return transferred all the photos to my desktop machine where i run LR2.6. i forgot to transfer catalog file from the laptop. later i cleaned up laptop hard drive. when i realised what happened (about 3 months of hard labor of processing pictures) i used a recovery software (iCare Data Recovery) to recover deleted catalog.
catalog file was found and supposedly recovered to hard drive.
however, when i try to open this catalog (file-->open catalog) i get an error message "The Lightroom catalog "catalog name" is corrupt and cannot be used or backed up until it is repaired".
i am given an option to Repair Catalog and upon selecting this option an error message comes up "The Lightroom catalog "catalog name" is corrupt and cannot be repaired at this time".
    any thoughts on this issue?
    thank you

    nop, did not work.
i guess there is one positive consolation out of this disaster - i get to relive the wonderful holiday experience once again, although only in pictures
    thank you Victoria

  • Delete Lightroom Catalog to bypass Lightroom CC 2015 crash on startup

!Lightroom 6 (CC 2015) crashes on startup. I'm running Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10.3). I've tried the various fixes listed on the forum (restarting the computer, logout/login of Creative Cloud, and numerous uninstall/installs of both Creative Cloud and Lightroom. None of these have worked.
However, I've found a temporary fix.
    1. Logout of Creative Cloud
    2. Open your photos folder
    3. Delete any Lightroom Catalogs
    4. Login to Creative Cloud
    5. Open Lightroom CC
    6. A dialog window appears: Lightroom Catalog was not found. Choose the option "Choose a different Catalog"
    7. Choose the option "Create a new catalog"
    8. Lightroom now successfully opens.
To clarify, I'm not trying to open a Lightroom 5 catalog. I'm not even going to bother importing my actual working catalogs until this issue is resolved.
This option, while successful, is tedious. Is there an easier fix? Is this an issue with file permissions? Or is the process of opening existing catalogs corrupted?

    Jay,
If you just completed installing Lightroom CC, try signing out and back in and see if it helps. This link explains how:
sign in and sign out of the Creative Cloud desktop app

  • Opening lightroom catalog

Since installing Lightroom 5, I keep getting the message that Lightroom cannot open the Lightroom catalog 5 because it is not a writeable. It will not even oopen Lightroom.  What can I do to resolve the issue?

Thanks, found it, but not certain why it would not have been there, this was thr first time I have opened Lightroom, and I would have expected all files and headings to be viewable.
    Thanks again.

  • Technical question:  Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??

    Technical question:
Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??
Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers.  I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

  • Can I move the Lightroom Catalog from one location to another?

Lightroom by default, places the Lightroom Catalog in the Pictures folder on my PC. My image library though, is located on an external hard drive. I've read that it is better to have the Catalog at the same location to avoid disconnected images, which sounds reasonable. Is it feasable to move the Catalog over to the same drive as my image library, or will that cause a problem? In other words would I need to start over again and create a new Catalog on the external drive? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I've learnt to my cost that the obvious solution isn't necessary the correct one.

For better performance it is preferable to have the catalog located on an internal hard drive. By default the catalog and the preview files have to be located in the same folder since there is continual read/write taking place while working in Lightroom. Lightroom does not make any changes to the original files so its fine for them to be located on another hard drive internal or external. Lightroom loves lots of hard disk space to operate so if your catalog is on an internal drive make sure it not starved for disk space.
However its ok for your catalog/previews files to reside on an external HDD with your original photo files.
Your photo files can reside on a HDD conected to a network but your catalog and preview files cannot be located on a network.
e.g I have my catalog / previews on the main HDD with my operating system with over 50% free disk space. My Photo files are on a secondary internal HDD with over 75% free disk space. I back up to external HDD.

Open Pictures folder and move the files named lrcat-journal and lrcat.lock to Desktop.
Make sure that , they are not inside Pictures folder any more and try to open backup from Lighrtroom and check..
Any LRcat file with .lock extension , move it to Desktop.

Make sure you don't have another copy of Lightroom actively running on your computer. If not, find your catalog file in Finder/Explorer. Look for a file with the same name, but with a .lock extension. delete that file. Now Lightroom should open the catalog again.
