Lightroom/Adobe nightmare

I have run into an unbelievable nightmarish situation with Lightroom and Adobe.
Several months ago, I upgrade to Lightroom 3 and for awhile, all was fine.
Then, a couple of months ago, I began to experience many problems with my computer and finally had to replace the harddrive. I did so and migrated everything over. This solved all the problems that I had been experiencing, but Lightroom had now become a trial version. This did not happen with any of my other programs, including others in the Adobe suite, such as Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat and so on. Only Lightroom.
I was not concerned. I had the serial number. Unfortunately, when I entered it, nothing happened. Suddenly, I no longer had access to Lightroom, a program that is absolutely vital to my workflow. I had two big projects underway, each 116 pages, one very near to completion and on that project, my photos were all processed and I had no more need for Lightroom. The other, however, was in the early stages and I had thousands - tens of thousands - of images to deal with.
So I called Adobe support and was connected to a support tech in Delhi. He and I then spent over two hours working to solve the problem. He took control of my computer and tried many things, but each time, once we entered the serial #, nothing. Over two hours of this. Finally, he grew frustrated and said I would get a call back the next day at a certain time and the problem would surely be solved.
That callback came - a different tech this time - and we spent over one hour going through much of the same process with the same result - nothing.
He said he was "escalating" my case and wanted to schedule a call back the next day but I had to go out into the field for the next several days, so instead he scheduled the call back for the following week, this past Monday at 11:30 AM.
That call never came. In the afternoon, I again called Adobe. I got an automated message with a promise to call back in about 59 minutes. I took off in my car to do something, planning to be back before that 59 minutes passed, but the call came while I was in the car. The tech knew nothing of my case, but I gave him the case number. He put me on hold for about five minutes, then came back, told me my case was being worked on, that it was being "escalated" and that I would receive a call back within 24 hours.
Given all the time that had past, given the fact that Adobe had a full week to prepare for the promised callback that had never come, I told him 24 hours was not acceptable. I told him Abobe was wasting my time and costing me money in lost production and that I wanted a call back in 45 minutes. After some back and forth, he agreed. He said I would get a call back in 45 minutes.
That call back never came.
Finally, 23 hours and 50 minutes later, I did get a call back. This was late yesterday afternoon. I spent about 20 minutes to a half-hour talking to this tech. I told him that to me the solution seemed painfully simple. As I had bought my product from Adobe, upgraded it through Adobe but that for some reason that no one could figure out, it now would not reactivate, Adobe should just replace it with a brand-new Lightroom.
He said he would "escalate" the case and promised to call me back at 12:30 today. If need be, we would then replace my upgrade with a new version and he would be there to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. He promised that the 12:30 call would bring a solution.
Guess what? He did not call back. Nobody did. Adobe left me hanging.
Finally, I called back. Again, I got an automated message that ended with a commitment to call me back in 19 minutes.
That call eventually came. The tech knew nothing about my case and so took some time to review it. He then said he was passing me on to his supervisor, who he promised would surely have a solution.
I then waited for a good spell listening to horrible music and finally the supervisor came on. He said he had reviewed my case and that the person who would need to help me would be the one whom I had last spoke with yesterday - the one who promised the 12:30 call back that never came. He promised that he would have this person call me back in five minutes and this problem would be solved.
That was an hour-and-a-half ago. The call has not come.
This is awful. What has become of Adobe?
This is inexcusable.
I am in a horrible jam. I have already spent days upon days, weeks over months, editing and rating photos in Lightoom catalogues, all of which are now unavailable to me. I have no way to process CR.2.
I am so frustrated and angry with Adobe.
I think I now have little choice but to purchase Aperture, and start from scratch.
Adobe... I must hold my tongue...

Jeff - first, I must thank you, for you are truly trying to help and you also obviously know what you are talking about.
Now:
Yes, I go through the process as you have described. I get the green arrow both for the upgrade serial and the original serial number, which appears immediately when I enter the upgrade serial number. The finish button becomes active, I click on it and then the dialogue box disappears and nothing further happens. It is as if Lightroom had never shown up on my screen.
I will try your idea of installing Lightroom on another internal drive (I have four internal two TB drives and I also keep three external docks that I move drives in and out of on a regular basis. I go through drives like crazy and have a drawer that is chock full of them).
Before I do, I have a question. If I succeed at installing Lightroom on another drive by using another admin user, will my other applications be available through that user? Or might some of them switch to trial mode?
If it successfully installs and then I switch back to my current ad min user, will the newly installed Lightroom be availalbe to it, or would it switch back to the trial mode?
As to you BTW question, after I did the migration and Lightroom came up as a trial, I was very busy in the final stages of the first project I mentioned and did not want to fool with anything that I did not have to, so I did not try to activate but used it in trial mode into the 30th day. So it worked in trial mode all that time. However, once it failed to activate, I lost the remainder of the 30th day. It would not work in trial mode again. Of course, it is possible that the 30th day timed out during the time that I was trying to activate, in which case the trial would have been available for the full 30 days.
Again, I thank you.

  • Lightroom Adobe Revel Smart Collections

    Hi There,
when i first tried the export function from LR to Revel i was totally thrilled because most of the time i work with smart collections. i just upoaded them to Revel from LR. From time to time some of the photos belong to more of one smart group. that wasn't any problem until the last 3 or 4 weeks. LR just showed an infobox saying that i will upload a newer version from a photo that is already in my Revel Album. But now LR does not export any photo if it is already in another album. this is a big problem for me, because changes on certain photos will not be updated any more. it is really frustrating that adobe changed this feature because Revel (what i already pay for) becomes almost useless for me. Organizing the photos into Albums in Revel is no option, because i have them already organized in LR.
Anybody with the same problem? Any workarounds? Any official comment from Adobe?
    Thanks,
    Arne

    Pasted from thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/5325344:
"I cannot now get a single image to upload to multiple albums in the same library"
In fact, Add one image to multiple albums is supported by Revel plug-in in Lightroom. Click the “Replace” button will allow the photo to go to multiple albums.
Yes, the prompted dialog is confusing.

  • Lightroom & Adobe Elements Metadata

Hi, I have catalogued over 20,000 photos using Adobe Elements. I have written extensive descriptions in the Notes field  Information>General>Notes. I have now started to use Lightroom but the Notes field in Elements does not show up anywhere in the Lightroom metadata. Is there anything I can do? Thank you

The Notes field in Elements will not transfer directly to Lightroom.
What you can do (and I'm sorry this is somewhat vague, but it has been over 5 years since I went through this myself) is to write the Notes to the photo files (in Elements, select all photos and then File->Write Tag and Properties Info... do this overnight so all 20,000 of your photos now have the Notes written to them); then use something like Exiftool to copy the Notes to some metadata field that Lightroom does import (such as caption or any other field in Lightroom), then import the photos into Lightroom, and your notes will be in Lightroom.

  • Nikon Adobe RGB vs Lightroom Adobe RGB - help me out

As a part of a general color management makeover on my system I've been looking at the softproffing in lightroom. I'm puzzled by the fact that a D800 RAW shot in Adobe RGB (i.e. the color space on the camera is set to Adobe RGB ) shows out of Gamut in Lightroom with a destination color space of Adobe RGB. The picture control in LR is set to that set on the Camera - Neutral. I'm also puzzled by the fact that the Monitor  (also set to Adobe RGB and profiled for Adobe RGB ) shows Gamut warnings as well under soft proofing. I was expecting that a RAW shot in Adobe RGB would not show gamut warnings for the same color space set as a destination.
Where am I going wrong ?

"The color space you have set on the camera has no effect on the raw file that will only affect the jpeg file created by the camera and also the embedded thumbnail."
Ah ! that explains it ! So in lightroom the raw file is in the ProPhoto space and in some cases will exceed the Monitor Gamut. I guess I can test this by shooting a test JPG with Adobe RGB specified & import it to Lightroom to see if the Monitor Gamut is exceeded.
"In addition "Adobe RGB " is a working color space and not a "Monitor Profile" you need to use a hardware device like i1 Eye One to create an appropriate monitor profile."
Thanks, I'm aware of this - I have in fact produced a monitor profile using a Spyder 4 - the Monitor is supposed to cater for Adobe RGB & I have profiled it as such. My confusion arose from thinking that the Nikon would apply the Adobe RGB space to the RAW file.
Many thanks for clearing this up.

We have an Adobe CC user, and it would not download anything at all until we gave her a temporary exception in our filter.^ This and add the program files into the exclusions of your AV.
In addition, try logging in as Administrator and see if it works that way. The graphics person and I use CC here without any issues but I always run updates and installations as Administrator.

    Hi,
we have some users that really want to use Adobe products, but since they changed to the Cloud (which isn't a cloud to me, but that aside) we're having regularly problems installing it. For instance, now, there is a user that renew their subscription, but I cannot get anything installed. So, I tried uninstalling Creactive Cloud app and reinstalling it. But, I'm getting the message: We've encountered the following issues: The server is not responding currently. Please try after some time. (Error code: 207). Of course, I tried several time, but no avail. Does anybody has an idea how we can install the soft?

  • Question Mark in black diamond in Safari and Adobe Lightroom

I have a problem with the “question mark in black diamond” phenomenon noted elsewhere in these forums. My problem is different in certain aspects, though, and I’ve found nothing which suggests a way forward in other threads.
I get the “? in black diamond” appearing in two contexts:
    (1) in the UI of the Web Module in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom when using the LRG One with PapPal Template (from lightroomgalleries.com), and selecting a currency symbol other than $ (i.e. when using £, EUR, or the Yen symbol)
    (2) when viewing web pages generated by the Lightroom Web Module with the PayPal template in Safari
In both these contexts, the currency symbol is displayed as “? in black diamond” in place of the "£" symbol.
The strange thing about this is that when I view the output in other browsers (I’ve tried IE5 for Mac, Camino, Firefox, OmniWeb and Opera), the “£” currency symbol shows up ok. However, it can’t just be a Safari issue, as the “?” shows up in the Lightroom Web Module interface as well.
I’ve posted a screenshot of the Lightroom interface here: http://www.lochaberphoto.co.uk/currency.html , and an example of gallery output here: http://www.lochaberphoto.co.uk/test2/index.html (click on the left-hand thumbnail to bring up the image page and check out the dropdown menu beneath the image).
Before posting here, I’ve tried various forums relating to Lightroom (Adobe Lightroom U2U, lightroomgalleries.com, luminouslandscape.com) but to no avail.
So this is a last chance post: hopefully one of the OS X experts here may be able to suggest a reason for this (is it a font issue? or something to do with UTF-8, or Safari’s default encoding? – I’m not a coder, but I really want to find the answer so I’ll try just about anything…), and maybe a way to solve it. BTW, I get the same experience on my G4 iMac and my MacPro, so I guess it’s not an Intel-specific issue.
Thanks in anticipation for any answers, or follow-up questions
    Jim

    Hi Tom
Thanks for this. I've tried previously changing the Default encoding in Safari Prefs to Western (ISO Latin 1), but found that did not help.
Following your advice I tried changing encoding from the View menu, and find that the £-sign displays correctly in both ISO Latin 1 and MacRoman (though not in UTF-8). The odd thing about this is that with Default Encoding in the Prefs set to either of those, I still get the ? until I go into the View menu and change from Default to Latin 1 or MacRoman, whereupon the £-sign shows up! Can't imagine how that can be. Tried closing and re-opening Safari after setting Pref to Roman 1, but still need to use the View menu to get the £-sign. Restaring the Mac doesn't help either.
So, Tom, with your help I now have a viable workaround, but as this is going to remain an issue for other Mac/ Safari users visiting my site, I'd like to find a way of preventing it happening. Can you suggest how it can be that Safari needs to be told twice (in Prefs and in View menu) to use ISO Latin 1 or MacRoman before it does so?
Look forward to any further comments
    Jim
(P.S.: It seems to me this must be linked to the fact that the ? shows up in the Lightroom interface, and that the fault lies with the PayPal gallery Template I'm using. So I'm wondering if there's anything you - or anyone else - can suggest that I can put to the developer of the Template which will enable him to resolve the issue - he's a Windows user, but has made one suggestion that I adapt the encoding in a file called transformer.xslt from it's default of ISO_8859-15 to UTF-8. I've tried that and tried also ISO_8859-1, but the issue persists regardless.)

I have just installed Adobe Lightroom on a 17in G4 with 1 gig Memory. I uploaded only about 2000 pictures that are sitting on an external 1 Terabyte harddrive. The thumbnails are pixalated and you can't view a larger image of the thumbnail withinout waiting 20 minutes (actually the larger image never did come up). I have another 15,000 images to upload. Would another gig of memory help? Anyone experienceing issues with Lightroom? I love the product, but right now, it's not doing me much good.

Question. Is Lightroom performing any tasks in the background like rendering 1:1 previews? Basically the comp would be creating full size jpegs of each raw file. Very time consuming, very processor intensive. Try turning off "render standard sized previews" when importing and seeing what happens... if its not on, then I'm out.
I share your enthusiasm for Lightroom, Adobe "gets it" when it comes to these things. Aperture we like you too but you have catching up to do by ahem, allowing xmp data to be imported. (And how about ignoring imports if their already in our library, hello apple!)

As an update, I installed an update 5.7on my Mac laptop, now the Lightroom 5.0 has become a "Lightroom Mobile" version.  How can change it back to the laptop version 5.7?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

LR on your laptop is still a desktop version.  It is just now able to upload to the cloud to replicate photos to either http://lightroom.adobe.com/ or an iPad that has LR Mobile installed.
I think you probably just want to change the LR 5 identity plate back so it doesn’t mention LR Mobile all the time.  Hover over the identity-plate area, and click on the little triangle that appears, then choose Change Identity Plate.

  • How to delete collections from lightroom libraries online

Hello, I'm fairly new to uploading pics to lightroom mobile and the lightroom.adobe.com libraries.
I was able to sync from my desktop, I see the collection online, however, I realized I uploaded the wrong images and I'd like to delete that collection.
But I don't see an option to delete anywhere, just share and slideshow. can someone help me? How can I delete a collection from my lightroom.adobe.com account?
    Thanks

Nevermind, I figured it out. if you remove all the pics from the Synced Collection (on your desktop) it will remove all the pics from the collection online.

  • My wishlist after 1 year with Lightroom

I have used LR for the past year as my primary workflow tool and have grown to really appreciate the productivity it delivers. However, we all know there is room for improvement. So I thought I would take a little time to read through the feature requests in this forum, consider my own needs, and assemble a list of the key features that would really matter for my workflow.
A little background I primarily shoot sports often shooting 300-1000 frames per event. I use LR to select, correct, and crop my keepers then export them to my website for sale. I will spend more time fine tuning some the better images, build galleries and occasionally print. I really havent found a need for slideshow. I now have a little over 40k images in my primary catalog. I am at the point where I need more productivity processing the images, particularly for noise removal and color correction, and better tools for managing a larger volume of images.
I hope you find this useful.
    a) Better camera calibration - integrated with LR maybe a built-in tool designed to work with a standard color checker
    b) Better noise reduction (Noiseware-like)
    c) Previews with NR and sharpening applied
    d) Improve auto-toning perhaps with configurable options like auto-levels in PS
    e) Some kind of magic tool to help correct color when dealing with cycling vapor lights (I shoot a lot of indoor sports in caves) - maybe skin-tone driven. Am I dreaming?
    f) Geometry correction tool in lens corrections
    g) Gradient tool or similar for ND-like effect to help fix skies etc..
    h) Green-eye removal tool
    i) Improved spot removal/healing (make it work consistently when applied to the corner of an image)
    j) Grain control to help emulate film look
    k) Output sharpening in export USM or similar, ideally with some sort of preview feature to enable you to fine tune settings
    l) Output sharpening in web galleries again, USM or similar with some sort of preview
    m) Improved export plug-in architecture need a formal approach for combining/chaining plug-ins on export (piglets seem a tad limited and they are cumbersome to install and manage)
    n) Lua needs to offer the ability to bind in external DLLs or similar libraries (command-line invocation is too crude and slow, and flashing windows consume focus making it impossible to use another tool while export is running)
    o) Softproofing for print output
    p) Faster performance when scrolling images in grid mode (Elements can do it, why cant LR?)
    q) Better tools for backing-up/archiving sets of folders to offline storage
    r) Archive to DVD / burn disc feature
    s) Plug-in architecture for image processing components
    t) Vignette effect tool that works with crops with the ability to set the center-point manually
    u) Ability to move sets of folders in one operation

I think Travis has produced a well thought out list.
I agree with most of it, except that I would put somethiings
    higher up the list.
(BTW: Thanks to the Adobe team for the antifringing improvements
they actually work and are great!)
I am a pretty intensive user of LightRoom. I only have 20K images
but the flow rate has increased and although I find LR to be very
efficient the limitations are starting to bug me. Hence I am always
hoping for an update that delivers some more functionality.
My List: (Shorter, but things left off do not mean I don't want them!)
    1. Need a better starting point than just the raw with invisible camera calibration presets applied.
    a. I want a lot more control over the auto application and set up of camera calibration presets. An ISO 100 image is handled way differently to an ISO 800 or 1200.
    b. I want an auto toned, colored (something like "Perfectly Clear" used in BibblePro) as my start point. In otherwords I want a way more
intelligent start point then the current fairly crude and invisible
one. (Other auto engines include ColourScience, DXPro). However at
present I prefer the Perfectly Clear. Some of these do things like
move greens and blues to nicer hues, remove green (or other) color
casts, local contrast enhancement, face detection and de-redding
    skin tones e.g. ColourScience) etc.
    c. The option to plugin 3rd party stuff (in particular global
auto editors) and to set it an intelligent default start point.
(I know the start point won't be right for every image but it
will be for a enough to make it really valuable.)
    2. The Sharpening (though improved) and Noise control needs to be
much better. At present the preview does not reflect sharpening
    changes accurately.
(I have a v-large, high gamut monitor and sharpening and noise changes
are accurately reflected in BibblePro but not LightRoom).
    2. More global image edits need to be available. For example- transformations (e.g perspective, lens distortion correction, ND
gradient exposure adjustments, Chanel mixer, etc).
    3. Sometimes the LR controls are too coarse, I would like some way to
quickly (e.g. hit "minus" a few times) reduce the range of these some of the controls. Or maybe better choice of range for some controls
could be based on preset or on adjustable default settings, e.g.
right click brings up gain control on each slider say!?.
    4. As a image manager it is a problem that LightRoom has a problem with some large images. LightRoom should simply handle the lot
no questions asked. In particular I have photoshop pano tiffs that
LR complains about. Also it would be great if I LR could process
my BibblePro files. (BiblePro uses ".bib" files in place of ".xml"
to do exactly the same thing as LR.)
    5. Collections are way improved, but still need more control over
them. i.e. ability to sort on a number of criteria. Also joining,
dividing, evaluating images independently of ratings in underlying database/catalogue.
Anyway I hope the LightRoom Adobe team keep up the good work.

This is the page talking about GPU usage in Photoshop: Photoshop CC and CC 2014 GPU FAQ
As you can see, I havn't seen much details about the actual use case of OpenGL/OpenCL acceleration in Lightroom. I assume now Adobe name Lightroom "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom" now, does that mean Lightroom is using the same kind of engine? I would think the new photo merge function would be a good candidate for GPU acceleration given some use case like panorama or large pixel image rotation could be quite heavy duty. Does anyone know where to find these under the hood details?
Having this said, I wonder what is the official graphics card vendor Adobe would recommend? Perhaps nVidia?

You can also install an "old" version from april 2014 (V 14.4) which works with Lr6 after having un-installed your actual actual drivers.
You can find it here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Be aware that with this driver you could activate the GPU Acceleration but it's possible that you didn't obtain any benefit...bug or not nobody knows...

  • FAQ: Will Lightroom work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?

    What is a raw file?
A raw file is the unprocessed data that was captured by your camera sensor when you took your picture. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any effects you may have applied to the file, such as white balance or black and white, may not appear in Lightroom. Your camera will create a JPEG copy of your raw file with all current settings applied and save that within the raw file for use as a thumbnail by most applications. When you first view a raw file in Lightroom, you will see this thumbnail, then Lightroom will read the raw data and create its own thumbnail, which may have a different appearance.
How does Lightroom work with raw camera files?
Lightroom interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update Lightroom for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras.
Will the raw files from my camera work with Lightroom?
To determine whether your camera is supported by Lightroom, check this list:

What if I own a previous version of Lightroom?
Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Lightroom, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:
Purchase the latest version of Lightroom that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Lightroom). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.

Will Lightroom help me automatically compensate for the image distortion caused by my camera lens?
The Develop module of Lightroom includes Lens Correction which can read what lens was used from the metadata. With this information it can pick a profile that will reduce distortion caused by the curvature of the lens. For a list of which lenses are supported by which camera bodies, see this list:

If your lens is not currently supported, you have a few options:
    Apply the lens correction manually
Use the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader (Download: Mac, Win) to see if someone else has created a profile your camera and lens
Use the Adobe Lens Profile Creator (Download: Mac, Win) to make your own profile for your camera and lens.
