Lightroom and deletions

I am running Lightroom 4 with Windows 7. My lightroom has been upgraded with each new edition.
I have found that I am unable to delete any photos from my hard drive disc for the years (in my case) 2005 to 2010. This is roughly 18,000 photos and I still have editing to do. Photos can be deleted for 2011 onwards. I believe that this occurred when I updated to Lightroom 4, though I cannot be certain. The photos are in My Main image folders on my hard drive and can be located in windows explorer from within Lightroom 4 they just cannot be deleted. When I try to delete a photo I get the usual window offering me a choice of deletion from the hard disc or removal from Lightroom. When I select Delete I get a message that says " The file named photo# could not be removed to the Recycle Bin". No other information is given. The file can be removed from Ligfhtoom.
I shoot raw images so deletion from the Main Image folder is not an option with the number of photos I am talking about It would be far too tedious and time consuming. Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so do you have an answer to fix it?

I can think of two reasons why you might not be able to delete photos.
Your recycle bin is full and needs to be emptied (but its probably not that if you can delete from some folders)
The permissions on these folders are incorrect and need to be change to write access.
I shoot raw images so deletion from the Main Image folder is not an option with the number of photos I am talking about It would be far too tedious and time consuming.
I have no idea what this means, nor why RAW photos would have different deletion issues than JPGs or TIFs, could you explain?

If you want to be able to view, edit and export from Lightroom you can move the files using your computer OS (explorer or finder) and update the folder location by right-clicking on the folder name in the LR Library. See fig 8 at the attached link:
    http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
This will work when the thumb drive is connected.
If you really have no need to keep these files off-line in LR then simply move the files, select all the thumbnails in the LR Library and hit delete. Then choose remove.

Correct, if you've got the Photography Plan or the Cloud Complete Plan.

  • Problem with Lightroom and Epson Printer

I'm suddenly having problems printing from Lightroom. I have Lightroom 1.4.1 installed on an iMac G5, and have an Epson Photo Stylus R2400. I've been using this combination from the beginning with no problems. Now suddenly when I try to print I get an error message that says Media is out or not loaded correctly. Neither is the case. I have tried restarting my computer, the printer and everything else I can think of, but nothing works. I can print from any other application without problems, so I'm assuming it's an issue with Lightroom.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? I was going to uninstall lightroom and do a reinstall but I can't find my installation disc. Now I'm at a loss to figure out what to do.
    Thanks,
    Craig

Try deleting you prefs file and/or print templates.
Lightroom is unique to many other programs in that it saves and restores printer settings. Some bad data may tried to be passes. A "fresh start" might help.

  • I was in Lightroom and had a power surge and now Lightroom will not launch....what can I do to fix it?

I was in Lightroom and had a power surge and now Lightroom will not launch. It encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix the next time it launches. I have shut my system down and Lightroom still will not launch. Does anyone have any suggestions?

delete your preview cache (.lrdata folder).
    Here has location:
Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5
If not enough info, search this forum for "delete preview cache".

  • How do I reinstall Lightroom and safely import library and preview data from an older computer?

Since buying a new MacBook Pro back in February 2014, I have had non-stop issues using Lightroom.  This is particularly frustrating considering I bought a new laptop specifically to improve my experience with Lightroom.  The experience thus far has been anything but.  The program freezes every time I try and 'right click' on an item, which means I have no way of reconnecting files or folders that are on external hard drives.  It also crashes regularly when I try and open the program.  I believe this may have something to do with how I moved files over from one computer to another.  I have a growing suspicion that my libraries are corrupt.
It's now been 6 months, and I've uploaded quite a few new folders since then.  However, I am ready to give all the last 6 months work away and start with a 2013 backup to ensure Lightroom runs smoothly.  I've moved all current library information onto an external hard drive, and deleted the folder from my laptop.  I've also tried to delete and reinstall Lightroom, but the program immediately crashes when I try to start it up again.
All this is to say I need some serious help getting Lightroom back up and running on my laptop, pulling in old data from my other laptop properly and bringing Lightroom back up to life on my new laptop.  Any assistance or hand holding would be immeasurably appreciated.

It should work.  Make sure you are installing the same version.  If you continue to have a problem try contacting Adobe Support thru chat:

  • I install Lightroom, and I get an "startup disk out of storage", I install Lightroom, and I get an "startup disk out of storage"

One year old Macbook Pro with 256 GB SSD.  Not power users by any stretch as it's not a work computer (family computer for 3 kids).  We've enjoyed iPhoto and iMovie to process a single flash drive with~32 GB of pictures and movies. 90% of the kids work is done through Google docs so it's not like we've got 200 GB of docs.
As we become more photo enthusiasts, today's project was to explore LIghtroom, PhotoNinja and Nik Effects suite.  I installed PhotoNinja, Nik, and Lr.  As I begin importing a 32 GB flash card into Lr, the system crashes and I am unable to log in using my account.  I boot it in safe mode, and delete Lr, I get about 6 GB of available storage back.
    1.  Why am I almost out of storage?  This device is designed for graphics professionals.  What did I do to burn up 246 GB of storage for casual use?
    2. Is there master app that allows me to see which users are using how much storage?  Is it possible my daughter burned this much storage loading movies from iTunes?  Is it 5x iPhoto that is killing us with 2 photo users and 1 moderate user?
    3.  What can I do to install Lr in the future so that I don't hit this wall?  I thought Lr served a portfolio mgmt role, and I can't believe that it died after downloading <1,000 images.

Did you ever use iPhoto? If you did and you copied images to your hard drive and then imported them into iPhoto, iPhoto made a second copy of them. This might be where all you disk space went, or part of it.
The best thing to do now is get an external drive and install OS X on that then start the system from that external and move some of your files to the external. Then you might be able to boot back into the internal drive.
To install OS X on an external drive you'll need to boot the system from the Recovery HD. At startup hold down the Commadn + r keys. Have an external drive connected before you boot to the Recovery HD. Once in the Mac OS X Utilities use Disk Utility for format the external Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a partition table of GUID. Once you do that exit disk Utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X and point the install to the external drive.

  • Should I reinstall Lightroom and if so, how do I not lose my work?

I have Windows 8 and Lightroom 5.7 installed on my desktop.  Every since I did the last update, Lightroom has been acting really weird. I often get a "Lightroom Not Responding"  message, or it will take for ever to do something like move from library to develop module.  I have been going through and deleting files and have moved folders with in Lightroom, but I would think that should not be an issue. This has been going on for about a month now after the last update.  Yesterday I moved my pictures from my desktop to an external drive through lightroom and then did a catalog backup..  Later in the day after a photo shoot, I tried to import pictures, to that external drive and it just stopped in the middle of the process.  I checked to see if the pictures were in the designated folder and they were.  So I closed Lightroom and opened it again 6 pictures had a white box with lines through them taking up the bottom quarter of the picture.  If I look at these pictures through another program, they appear fine.  Should I reinstall Lightroom? If so, how do I save my work?  Could my catalog (which I have backed up) be corrupt?
I have more work to be done, but I don't want to proceed if I am working with an unstable program.

Uninstalling LR does not delete the catalog which is in an entirely different place, not the Programs folder. I am not saying that removing and reinstalling LR will solve your problem, but you don't need to worry about losing your work. If you reinstall, the first time you launch LR it may create a new empty catalog. Just use File/Open Recent to open your old catalog.

Tried a number of "fixes" from blogs.  No joy.  Deleted all my adobe apps, rebooted, and Creative Cloud says it needs to reload.  Went through that process, and it quit near the end, saying it needed to reload and directed me back to same Adobe site.  Hmm.  Round and round we go.  How do I get off of this loop and get my Adobe Lightroom and PS working fine again?  Whole episode started after loading CC and then PS said it didn't have Camera Raw.  Went and downloaded that, wouldn't load and said I needed Adobe Download Diagnostic (or something like that) went to suggested link, whereupon it tells me it is no loger available.
Looking forward to cleaning everything off and starting over!!  Any input gratefully accepted and I will NOT be trying CC again.  I am sure it is just fine, just not for me, now.

  • I had over 7000 images stored in Lightroom and they are no longer there. What happened to them and how do I get them back?

I had over 7000 images stored in Lightroom and they are no longer there. Do images automatically delete after a certain number? How do I get my images back?

It'll be something you have done. Think back to recent things you may have done. For example, might you have created a new catalogue? Anything listed under File > Open Recent?

  • Lightroom mysteriously deleted files after trying to convert RAW to DNG

Running Lightroom 1.3 on the MacPro 10.4.8
Strange thing happened. I had a catlogue of 11,824 photos yesterday.
The catalog was a mix of RAW and dngs and I wanted to convert the remaining RAWs to DNGS.
All photos were in place, no ? marks before I used "Convert photo to DNG" command. In the Convert photo to DNG I had the boxes for Only Convert RAW files, and Delete originals after successful conversion CHECKED.
I realize I may have been asking way too much for the computer to do, and wasn't surprised when nothing happened for about 5 minutes. Finally I got the message that it couldn't convert because the original file could not be found.
After that 2,268 files were missing. And as the day goes on today, and use the program that number is increasing, even when not asking to convert.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. Ran disk utility and all checks out with that. And the deleted files are on 2 different drives.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

First step I'd check and find the actual images, make note of their file paths. I'd be surprised if any file was truly missing; just that LR has lost the path for whatever reason.
Second, I'd do the conversion on a much smaller scale- in my case, my workflow is such that I choose to convert to DNG when most or all of my work on a folder is done. So I do it pretty much by folder, which generally don't exceed a few hundred images.

  • Cant install Lightroom after deleted it

I had to delete Lightroom and several other apps. the other day to get lots of diskspace very fast. I try to install Lightroom again but the installer stops saying "there is nothing to install" (translated from the Norwegian translation) There is no de-installer option on the cd-installer.
What do I do to install Lightroom again ?
In panic I have deleted all adobe software and the adobe folder in application support to see if that helps, but stille the same "There is nothing to install" from the installer. Maybe I will get the same problem when i I re-install the designer collection :/
    -- Erland

I had this problem on a desktop machine (a dual-processor G4/500MHz Power Mac, running Tiger 10.4.10). A Mac Book Pro 17" with Intel Core 2 Duo (2.33GHz) running Leopard 10.5 is running everything without a hitch, so far...
I had Lightroom 1.0 running perfectly on the desktop. Installed the 1.1 update and I began getting the "unacceptable" serial number message [big red X]. Spoke to tech support at Adobe and they suggested removing Lightroom, and re-installing from the distribution disk. I removed the app, and all prefs files, but not the receipt... Tech support did not mention removing the receipt, or any other Lightroom files (prefs or app support files...).
The install process kept telling me "there's nothing to install" when I tried repeatedly to install in the Applications Folder on the system startup disk.
I finally installed the application successfully, and updated to 1.2 successfully, by using the distribution disk and installing to a different internal drive within the same computer. I made an alias of the app, which is the only thing on this drive, and put the alias in the Applications folder of the startup disk.
It's an enormous mystery. I'd rather all my apps were in the main Applications folder, so I may try this again, but getting rid of all the receipt file(s) that I can find. Getting rid of the receipt file seems to be a key part (but not the only one, alas) to getting this peculiar problem resolved.
Lightroom has been no trouble in any other regard since the first beta release. I suspect that having had the beta on this Power Mac, which somehow left some remnant of code that the install routine finds and decides there's already a copy of the software on the target disk, is the essential problem, compounded by installing the first gold release (1.0) over the un-installed beta (that is, I un-installed it, according to Adobe instructions).
These applications are so large, and so spread out over parts of the hard drive, in terms of viable and needed components, it's amazing there aren't MORE problems of this sort, rather than fewer.
Also, finally, there seems to be some serial number bug that Adobe is aware of, but is not telling us very much about. There's a long entry in their knowledgebase about it on the company site, and a number of options to pursue with customer support, if you have serial number problems. I'm not a programmer, so I can't imagine what the problem is.
I do know that in 17 years (and more) of using Adobe products, these aren't the first problems, and they won't be the last.

  • Lightroom and Mac

I just started using Lightroom. Trying to migrate away from iPhoto. When I open Lightroom and open the Folders list, I only see my LaCie external HD and not my Macintosh HD or any other folders in the Finder list. I have been watching a few You Tube videos on LR and they all show the Mac HD and other Finder folders under the Folders list. Why not on mine???? Any suggestions would be helpful... It can't be this hard...

Select all the photos you want to delete and then use the Photos/Delete
from catalog menu to remove them from LR. BE CAREFULL NOT TO DELETE FROM
HD. This could remove the photos as well which may not be what you want
unless you did the Import using the Copy option. If you just performed an
Impory/Add then there is only the original copy.

  • Feature Request: Functions for Renaming and Deleting LrDevelopPresets

As it stands, there is no way to delete an LrDevelopPreset programmatically - short of deleting the develop preset lrtemplate file, but even then the effect doesn't take place until after restarting Lightroom.
Likewise, there is no good way to rename an LrDevelopPreset.
Rename and delete functions would be very helpful to plugins that work with lrdevelopresets.
