Lightroom and DNG compatibility?

Will Lightroom read DNG converted from RAW from a camera that Lightroom doesn't support?

> "Barry what do you mean by converter? I am talking about taking a CR2 image and converting it to a DNG file."
I was talking about converting raw files in general to DNG files. (Not just CR2s). I was NOT talking about "raw conversion".
Adobe provide ACR, Lightroom, and the DNG Converter. They can all convert CR2s to DNGs (among other things). (They are all DNG converters and all raw converters, sharing core code).
Hasselblad-Imacon provide FlexColor which can convert their raw file formats to DNG. Pentax provide PHOTO Browser which can convert PEFs to DNG. Better Light supply ViewFinder for their scanning digital backs.
Then there are amateurs to who supply (typically free) converters for niche and minority and unofficial raw file formats to DNG: raw2dng; DNGForPowershot; SMaL to DNG; eMotionDng; etc:

  • Preview and DNG compatibility.

    Dear members;
Yesterday I created my first DNG files as I plan to convert all my RAW images to this file system.
After I converted my RAW images using Adobe's DNG Converter, I tried to open a few different files but Preview just kept crashing. My camera is a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II and the RAW files created by this camera are approximately 17 MB in size. I don't have any problems with the RAW files themselves as I open them with preview without any problems.
Why isn't preview opening the DNG files ? Could it be a bug ? Although the RAW files are approximately 17 MB in size, the DNG generated from them are approximately 50 MB in size. Would the size be a problem ?
How can I solve this problem so that I can view my DNGs in preview ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Same problem with DNG files produced by Leica Digital-Modul-R and Leica M8. The "Digital Camera RAW Support 1.0.1" update doesn't change the problem. Apple announces "DNG File Format Support Open files in the new Adobe DNG (Digital Negative) format." on the Tiger web site.
My files are OK with Adobe Photosop CS and Capture One LE.

  • Lightroom and DNG files

Can Lightroom 1.0 write data to DNG files?

It won't let you write them with a full-size preview though like the DNG Converter will.

  • Lightroom and camera compatibility?

I read elsewhere where someone said their new camera was not compatible with Lightroom 2.0.  This struck me as a bit odd but I wanted to double check this before making the purchase.  I know my pc is compatible with 2.0.   My camera is Nikon D80 and I shoot in both JPEG and RAW. Thanks!

The full list of supported camears can be seen here.

I am a novice. I have a few thousand iPhotos stored on Dropbox. But now I have a Canon T5i camera and want to get more involved in photography. I want to open a Lightroom and Photoshop account. I have a Windows desktop and an iPad. Will I have any compatibility issues with PC and Mac? Can I store my photos in Lightroom and eliminate my Dropbox account? Thanks.

You shouldn't have any compatibility issues. But you don't store images "in" Lightroom. Lightroom simply points to wherever the images are on your system. You might like to watch a few videos that can help you understand how Lightroom works.

  • Installed Lightroom 5.2 and DNG 8.2 and NEF files are not supported.

I installed Lightroom 5.2 and DNG 8.2 and when I try and import NEF files I am told they are not supported.

If your camera is very new, like a Nikon Df, then wait until the next version of LR/PS/ACR for support.
If your camera model is newer than the latest version of LR, perhaps a Nikon D610, then you need LR 5.3/ACR 8.3/DNGC8.3 which are all available in release-candidate status at Adobe Labs:  http://labs.adobe.com/
If your camera is older and should be supported, then are you using and older Nikon Transfer or View NX that are corrupting your NEFs in a way that Adobe doesn’t recognize them?  The solution for this is to not use the Nikon products that predate your camera and install versions that came with your camera or are newer than your camera.  Or just use LR, itself, or the OS utilities like Finder and Explorer to copy the NEFs to your hard-drive.
If your files are corrupted by obsolete Nikon products, then there is a utility, here, that can undo the damage:

  • Lightroom and Photoshop don't want to work with each other ...

    Hello,
    I've a problem with Lightroom 2.4 and Photoshop Cs4 (11.0.1).
When I let Lightroom open a photo in Photoshop to edit it (photo>edit in>Photoshop cs4) it opens it into Photoshop, and I can do wathever I want to the photo. But here's the problem: when I'm ready and click Save, the new Psd-file doesn't comes back into Lightroom... However, Photoshop did save the new Psd-file in the right location with the right file-name, so I have to synchronise the folder and import it back into the catalog.  I have Jpegs and DNGs in my catalog, but they both have the problem. The funy part about this is that this happens to almost every photo, so not every photo. I have seen a few photos (about 5 out of 10.000) that do come back in the catalog automatically. I have made a little second catalog to test if it's a problem with the catalog, but the second catalog has the same problem. I already reïnstalled Photoshop, but it didn't help. My operating system is Mac Os X 10.5.8. Camera is 5.4...
Can anyone help me, because it's a real pain in the back to edit my photos in Photoshop right now....
    Thanks,
    Vincent

Deleting Prefs in both LR and PS sometimes cleans this up.

  • Lightroom and Photoshop CS 6 workflow

    Installed:
    Lightroom 3.6
    Lightroom 5.3
    Photoshop CS6
    InDesgin
    Illustrator
    Windows 8.1
all programs 64 bit (except InDesgin)
    Hello,
    there's a problem, which I couldn't solve.
I choose a photo in LR 5.3 to edit in an external editor (which is Photoshop CS 6, format: psd, 16 bit, 300 dpi) and PS CS 6 starts so I can do the editing.
When I save my work, the new file not appears in the LR 5.3 catalogue / collection.
I choose different a file format (tiff), but I haven't success.
Any ideas, what could be the reason?
    Thank You all!!
    Cheers
    Theo

If you decide to stick with your present software configuration then it will be necessary for you to convert your raw images using the latest DNG converter.  Conversion to DNG is built into Lightroom, and it doesn't use the standalone DNG converter.
I might suggest that you download the Lightroom 4.1 RC2 from the Adobe Labs web site and give it a try.  It will create a copy of your Lightroom 3 catalog, but it will not interfere with your use of the previous version.  I am running it, and don't find that I have the problems that some are.  You can use it for free until it expires.  That should give you enough time to evaluate whether or not you want to switch.  I have purchased Lightroom 4 but have not installed it yet.  I'm going to wait until 4.1 is officially released.

  • Image size changes when moving an image between Lightroom and CC.

Image size changes when moving an image between Lightroom and CC.
I opened a .dng image in LR and then opened it in the Develop module.  I clicked on Crop Overlay and then on the ‘As Shot’ drop down menu (the lock is closed) and cropped to 11 x 17 and clicked ‘Done’-.
I click Cntl-E and the image opens in CC.  There I click on Image > Image Size and the Image Size  is 13.288 inches by 20.533 inches.
Why does the image size change?
I believe there is a menu to control the size of the image and I've looked everywhere I can think of in LR and CC, I googled various descriptions and I checked two of Scott Kelby's books, but I just can't figure out how to keep the image a consistent size when moving between LR and CC.
    Help!...Please?

The penny will drop soon or maybe the cloud will lift.
In Lightroom all editing is undoable/nondestructive.
Hence a crop of 3x2 is not inches, centimetres, pixels or anything else. It is jst a ratio. When a file is exported, either to PS or disk, then the crop ratio has size determined in respect of pixels and inches or cms.
So my 6000x5000 pixel image I will crop to 3x2 that leaves (before exporting) a 6000x4000 file.
Now when exported it can be set to export at
100pixels per inch and will end up at 60x40" when printed.
200pixels per inch will end up at 30x20"
    300ppi will end at 20x13.3"
You will notice in the Crop Tool there are no size denominations such as inches or centimetres as an image file only has pixels and the determination of size is done through exporting or printing.
    Hope that helps somewhat..

  • Can you tell me when RAW (ORF) support for Olympus E-PL7 in Lightroom or DNG Converter is coming? The camera is no use to me until you provide support!

I recently bought the new Olympus E-PL7 an dam finding ti incredibly frustrating that Lightroom still doesn't support it. Is there any news on that?

First of all, this is a user-to-user forum. Nobody here can tell you when/if that camera will be supported. Secondly, Adobe doesn't make announcements like that in advance. The camera will be supported when it is. All of the previous models of that series are now supported in Lightroom, so I suspect it will only be a matter of time until your model will be supported. I know that isn't what you want to hear, but that is the reality of things. There is a release candidate of the next Camera Raw and DNG converter, but your camera is not listed as one of the newly supported cameras. That does not mean that it wouldn't be included in the final version. You just have to wait and see.

  • 10.9.5 with camera raw 5.07 not showing .RW2 and DNG but showing .CR2 previews in finder

Even with the latest OS and latest camera raw, only my Canon raw image files display proper previews in the finder, and open properly with iPhoto and Photoshop.  .RW2 and .DNG files will not show previews or open with iPhoto, and .RW2 files won't even open in Photoshop without being converted to DNG.  I've combed the support community questions for over a year now, am tech support oriented, and am ready to throw in the towel.  I've had this same problem with previous system versions and camera raw versions, so I know the solution lies with neither of the two.

I'm having exactly the same issue and I posted on Adobe's site and dpreview and StackExchange but nobody has the final answer. I can see thumbnail previews in finder with ALL my various Raw files (Olympus OMD EM1, Panasonic GH2 and GH3, and Nikon D5300) just fine but when I use the convert to DNG feature in Lightroom (latest version since I'm on the CC subscription), only the Nikon DNG files display a preview thumb in finder and neither the Oly or Panny DNG files display. The closest I got to an explanation is that, since the m4/3 cameras do their profiling in camera and Adobe doesn't have a profile for them, some of the info isn't converted into the DNG in those systems. The article I read about it was really about Aperture not being able to read the Adobe DNG files but it may also explain why Mac finder can't show preview thumbs.  Aperture 3: Some DNG images display as unsupported - Apple Support
If there is no way to get preview thumbs in finder with the converted RAW files from my GH3 then I'll forgo converting for now.
    Here is my Nikon DNG
And my Panny DNG (Oly is the same)
Panny RAW shows up just fine
    As does the Oly ORF

  • Camera Raw 5.2 and DNG Converter Available - Note from Adobe

Camera Raw 5.2 and the DNG Converter is now available:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2008/11/camera_raw_52_and_dng_converte.html
Lightroom will be updated to version 2.2 with equivalent camera support in December.

Well, I managed to locate and download both the ACR 5.2 and the DNG 5.2, but it was a bit of a challenge. I have a couple of comments regarding the DNG installation.
As a sometime OS beta tester, I have developed a habit of keeping C:\ for the operating system only. When a new OS or beta is issued, I just format C: and install the new OS. I try to keep applications off C:. It is hard, though, with all the default installations. It would be nice to have the option to install DNG.exe in my applications partition.
My workflow involves importing NEF's from the memory card to a folder, and at the same time converting those NEF's to DNG's and putting them in a different folder in a different partition. Both these NEF's and DNG's are archived. A copy of the DNG's are used as working images. The virtue of DNG's is that there are no sidecar files to keep track of when exporting images. Unless I really mess up, I never go back to the NEF's again. I guess that I am an "outlier" too. I guess that this is essentially the 5 - A "double DNG-only" workflow, using type 2, the native-DNG-DNG system. This is discussed in detail by Barry Pearson at http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/safety.htm#personal
I do like the camera profiles. I previously have used the Fors script. My Nikon D200 lacked red and the Fors script fixed that. Not surprisingly, different profiles are appropriate for different image types. Is there any way of determining the methodology and reasoning between the different profiles, and what specific problems each one is designed to correct. This might permit better matching profiles to image types, with less trial and error.

  • I want to sell my Canon EOS 6D with bundled Lightroom and Elements. May the purchaser use the bundle

I want to sell my Canon EOS 6D with bundled Lightroom and Premiere Elements. May the purchusar use the bundled software?

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR

  • If I buy Lightroom and Photoshop CC will I be able to use the applications on both my PC and my Mac?

I have been using Photoshop CS3 for many years and finally decided it was time to upgrade. I use a Mac at home and a PC at work and also have an iPad Air. Are the Lightroom and Photoshop CC Apps compatable with both platforms or would I need to purchase two different memberships? I would obviously not use both at the same time.

Yes, you can use your two activations  with your membership for either Mac or PC just as I am doing. I have a Macbook and Windows 7 laptop, and both work well.

  • I am having trouble with lightroom and photoshop being too slow.

Currently I am using LR 5.6 64bit andCS5 64 bit. Is the programs are running too slow because I am using 64 bit? If so, how do I get the other versions. I just started having this problem with the new upgrades.
Please if anyone knows what to do please answer right away. I have jobs that I need to get out.

Thank you both for replying. My processor is 3.2 Ghz. Ram 8gig 64 bit operating. Size of files are 29.6m
available Ram is set to 7170 range in MB i have set to 5019. I have the sync set to sync everything.
When I am importing into lightroom a new scan card, Raw, Canon D 5 Mark II raw. my Lightroom changes to DNG. It can take several minutes to edit. LR will spin quite a while when I try to look at a file in library or develop module after the files have been imported to lightroom. I have my preferences set to hold for 30 days so it should not take so long for files to refocus when I close lightroom and then reopen later. When I bring photo into photoshop, it sometimes it will not open if I have another file open in Photoshop. It takes 30 seconds for a file to open in photoshop from Lightroom. When I zoom in on a photo in LR it takes up to 30 seconds to focus.
