Lightroom and HDR

I'd like to know what other people's experience has been working with Lightroom and the various HDR applications.
Photomatix:  I love how the round-trip workflow brings me right back to LR and defaults to a file name based on the original files.
Merge to HDR Pro:  I do not like having to stop in Photoshop to save and name the file before returning to LR.  Anyone have a suggestion for a better workflow when using Merge to HDR and LR?
Those are the only two programs I currently use for HDR.  Is anyone else using HDR programs from Nik or FDRtools (or anything) within their LR workflow?  What has your experience been?
Thanks,
~Steve

Hola!
I've been experimenting with HDR quite a lot lately and I've been using LR/Enfuse Plugin which uses align_image_stack and enfuse from the Hugin software (http://hugin.sourceforge.net). I've also used the settings from the website http://photoblog.edu-perez.com/2009/01/greater-depth-field-macro.html and found that it comes out rather well.
It will automatically import back into the Lightroom catalog with the name of your choosing, file format, metadata and colour space.
Overall it's a tidy little plugin all for the cost of a donation.
Highly recommend!

  • Lightroom 5.5 and HDR Effects pro 2

Just updated to LR 5.5 and when using HDR Effects Pro 2 I select the files for output to HDR Effects, they are sent to the program, I make what changes I need and save the file back to LR. Noticed no LR export file seems to be there to send the output from HDR back to. Since the update I am getting this message but not every time. LR pops up this warning and all changes are lost "unable to export, an internal error occurred: addphoto: no file at path". The frustration is that it is intermittent and like most errors has no explanation. LR 5.4 had no issue with this.  Using Win 7 64 bit. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. The following are my system specs. This feature has worked in the past but since upgrading from LR4 to LR5, this feature has stopped working. I can print to a printer, but not to a PDF.
    HP Z800 Workstation
    Duel Intel Xeon X5670 @ 2.93GHz Processors
    18 GB RAM
    Windows 7 Professional
    Lightroom 5.4
    Acrobat XI Pro (Version 11.0.06.70)
It will go through the motions, as if it is creating the PDF, but it doesn't output anything. I've restarted Lightroom and rebooted my system, but nothing seems to help.

  • Lightroom and Photoshop Integration

    Hello Everyone,
I am a beginner photographer and beginner Lightroom / Photoshop person.
I use Lightroom for most of the "darkroom" type stuff with my pictures (cataloging them, minor croping, playing with tint, hue, etc).  However some things can only be done in Photshop - layers, HDR, masks, adding textures.
One reason i like LR is that the changes are non destructive.  That means that the original picture is not changed, but the edits I make are stored in some file and applied on top of the picture and saved elsewhere - not saved with the pic.  But i need to use PS and learn PS a bit more.  I heard both products were highly integrated, but does anyone know how?  If I edit in LR, how do I send the pic to PS to do more?  Do the PS edits need to be "saved as" a new file or are they sent back to Lightroom and somehow saved as non-destructive edits?
Also can both products convert color RAW files to BW and Sepia just as easily?

To send an image to Photoshop for editing you use the Edit in Adobe Photoshop command (see Photo>Edit in menu or use the Cmd/Ctrl+E shortcut). When you use this command Lightroom creates a rendered version in ram. It is this rendered version that you edit in Photoshop.  When you have completed your Photoshop edits use the "Save" command not  "Save As" to save the image back into Photoshop. The edited file will be saved as a fully rendered TIFF or PSD file (you can define which in Lightroom Preferences).
Non destructive editing in Photoshop requires that you use either layers or smart objects. While Lightroom can handle files with layers and/or smart objects it can't actually edit the Layers or Smart Objects. That being said, if you need to re-edit the non-destructive Photoshop edits just send the rendered file back to Photoshop.
Photoshop uses the Camera Raw plug-in to convert raw images and Lightroom uses an embedded version of the Camera Raw engine for the same purpose. So, both convert colour to B&W and Sepia with equal ease.

  • Help with PS and HDR Effect Pro from Nik

I altready have a help request into Nik Software, but was hoping someone here could offer some suggestions.
I'm running the Nik Complete software program on Win 7 64Bit, Raid 5 machine. 8800 GTS 512 MB card; 12gb of RAM, i7 quad core, 2.67 GH, PS CS5 and Lightroom 3.2, Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.
I have the most updated drivers for video, wacom tablet. OS is current with updates. PS CS5 is updated, but I am NOT running Lightroom's 3.3 RC.
I updated all software updates for the NIK software collection from their site and still have the same problem even after uninstall and re-install.
When I attempt to run HDR Efect Pro I get the menu window to select my images, click ok and with in seconds I get the message that Adobe Photoshop CS5 has stoopped working and must close...
I've gone to their site and looked into their FAQ/troubleshooting and did all their recommendations, update drivers, look for color profiles with 0 Bytes in the system color spool for both 32 and 64 bit apps and still no luck. This also happens with CS4 and CS3 and if I attempt to use the program form Lightroom and Bridge. Any ideas, work arounds, suggestions? Their automatic reply from my support request says 2-3 days due to the high populaity of their program!!!
Thanks for any and all help.

Outside of suggesting some pretty generic things, I can't offer much help...  I don't use Nik products myself
You could try disabling the "Use OpenGL Drawing" setting in Photoshop as a workaround to see if that helps.  Perhaps between Photoshop and the plug-in problems are being caused in the OpenGL driver for your particular video card.
Also, given that 3rd party plug-ins and Photoshop could be competing for memory, you could try changing the amount of memory Photoshop is allowed to use in the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog.
    Good luck.

I have just sought  to update my lightroom and am now unable to access the develop function and get a note stating that I have reduced functionality what it this about and how do I get my product back

    Hi there
I have version 5.7 and every time I opened it I was told that updates are available and to click on the icon to access these.  Instead it just took me to the
adobe page with nowhere visible to update.  I then  sought to download lightroom cc and this is when I could not access the 'develop' section due to reduced
functionality  It was apparent that my photos had been put in cc but no way to access them unless I wanted to subscribe.
I have since remedied the problem as  my original lightroom 5.7 icon is still available on the desktop and have gone back to that.  I do feel that this is a bit
of a rip off and an unnecessary waste of my time though.
Thank you for your prompt reply by the way.

  • Printing: Lightroom and Photoshop

Ok...so today I tried to run my first print since getting lightroom. Quick run down on my color management (although I am still learning on this subject as well). My monitor is calibrated with an eye one display. My camera (Canon 300D) is set to AdobeRGB profile. I am running an Epson 2400, Ilford Smooth Pearl paper, with the profile provided from Ilford, and have it set to have the printer determine colors. And I am running Lightroom and Photoshop CS2.
I have been printing with this combonation beautifully for about a year now. I do have one small thing about my setup, even calibrated, my monitor is a little dark, so I must do a small curves adjustment on my final version to get the print to be perfect. I have accepted this (not the newest or best monitor) and just set an action to run before printing.
So, today, I tried to print from Lightroom. The print came out WAY too dark...I mean, my blue sky is a dark purple...odd. So I said, well I need this print, let me move it to photoshop, drop the curve and print from there. Well...the blue came out blue, but the image is still a little dark...I will play with the curve again to see if I can get it right. I don't have a problem with doing this for now, but I am wondering why the images are darker then they used to be, even in photoshop.
Also, can I create actions in Lightroom, something like develop presets that I can run AFTER I am done working on an image that we prep the document for print?
Sorry for the long post...thanks for any help...

So...you're using the canned profile from Ilford...and in Lightroom you've added that via "Other" correct? When you select that profile you are then using Lightroom color management and then you go into the Epson driver under Properties, Mode Custom and then select Off under Color Management, right? You've also selected the correct media that Ilford reccomends with the Pearl paper?
If you hit print from there than that should take care of it. Note however that if you change the page template, it _WILL_ change the print output settings making you update to the profile again.
So far, I get equal output results from Lightroom and Photoshop CS2/3 when using the same profile and printing under Mac or Win. So, if you are _NOT_ getting the same results, your settings are not equal-something somewhere is set incorrectly.

If you still have your serial number, look at OLDER previous versions http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html

  • Problem with Lightroom and Epson Printer

I'm suddenly having problems printing from Lightroom. I have Lightroom 1.4.1 installed on an iMac G5, and have an Epson Photo Stylus R2400. I've been using this combination from the beginning with no problems. Now suddenly when I try to print I get an error message that says Media is out or not loaded correctly. Neither is the case. I have tried restarting my computer, the printer and everything else I can think of, but nothing works. I can print from any other application without problems, so I'm assuming it's an issue with Lightroom.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? I was going to uninstall lightroom and do a reinstall but I can't find my installation disc. Now I'm at a loss to figure out what to do.
    Thanks,
    Craig

Try deleting you prefs file and/or print templates.
Lightroom is unique to many other programs in that it saves and restores printer settings. Some bad data may tried to be passes. A "fresh start" might help.

I was in Lightroom and had a power surge and now Lightroom will not launch. It encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix the next time it launches. I have shut my system down and Lightroom still will not launch. Does anyone have any suggestions?

delete your preview cache (.lrdata folder).

  • Can an iPhoto library be shared with Lightroom and capture one?

Since Aperture is being replaced by … nothing, how can I access the same library with multiple editors?

Neither iPhoto, Lightroom nor Capture One are editors. They are all database driven Photo Managers with non-destructive processing. There is no rational workflow that would use more than one of these apps, any more than it would make sense to write a novel in three different word processors at the same time.
Pick the one that suits your needs - if you're coming from Aperture then forget iPhoto, it's much less capable and also being end-of-lifed. Pick between Lightroom and Capture One. Then google the options for migration from Aperture to the one you choose.

  • Color change on exporting from lightroom and saving in Photoshop CS5

I have been having issues with my pictures with color management.    I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5.  I thought over the last 2 years that it was just me.   I have bought a Eizo monitor with a hood, calibrate with a i1display pro, painted my walls gray, updated my strobes from alien bees to elinchrome bxri's.   Updated my sekonic meter to a L 758.   Have done custom white balance with gray card, expodisc, xrite kits.   The problem has been over the years when I work on a picture in lightroom and export it as jpeg or adobe rgb it gets saved to my external hardrive and the colors are really bad !!   You can go back and compare the picture in lightroom to the picture on my iomega external drive and there is a significant difference.   I do some animal photography and I had a dog that had brown fur and when I export it out of lightroom the dogs fur is actually a bright very orange color.  Same thing happens with skin tones.     When I import the photos into lightroom the pictures look ok.       The same thing is happening when I go from lightroom to photoshop the picture color looks good but when I go to File-save as - tiff or jpeg the colors are changing.   It does not matter what color space I am in I have tried them all it is still happening.    If anyone has any insight that would be great.

Thanks everyone for the help.   I have only been doing photography for about 2 years and the color managment part has been my hardest thing to get right.   My monitor ColorEdge CG243W LCD.   Wide color gamut of 98%.  Has a sensor on front of monitor that detects ambient brightness but this will only work if you are in a custom color mode.  Modes are: custom,  sRGB,DCI,EBU, Cal1.   I use the Cal 1 to be able to use the Colornavigator software that came with the monitor.  You also have to be in custom color mode to be able to manually adjust brightness, contrast, temperature on the monitr itself which I do not use because I use the Cal 1 mode.   I was not sure about the digital input signals.   I am on the DVI-I in which this allows digital signal input and analog signal input.    There is a DVI-D mode that allows only digital input only.    Also did not know if I needed to be concerned about setting the frequency that corresponds to the grahic board in the monitor ?    My bandwith was set to normal and now is on wide.   My digital input is for 1920x1200 resolution.   Appicable signal is Vesa CVT RB.  Frequency is 60 Hz.   Yes I did call Eizo twice last year when I got my monitor and did not get very far.     I have also called and spoke to a color specialist at my lab and told him the problems I have been having and he just told me to leave everything in sRGB.   Well I would like to get the most from my monitor's color gamut and when working on my pictures so that is why I am still determined to get this figured out.
I use the i1 Dislpay Pro hardware to calibrate with and the ColorNavigator software.     When calibrating.   I go to create a new target---select enter manually--Gamut ( monitor native--states recommended)--Brightness 100cd---White point (6500k)--set black level (recommemded states mininum 0.2)---gamma 2.20---priority (set automatically to standard, this adjusts gray balance while maintaining the contrast)---then I hit calibrate and it goes through the process.   The results I get are:                                            Target                                               Result
                          Brightness                                        100cd                                              99.9cd
                           Black Level                                    minimum                                       0.15cd
                          contrast ratio                                                                                            647:1
                          White Point                                    6500k                                              6501k
                           Gamma                                           2.20                                             R   0.6774,0.3136
                                                                                                                                            G   0.2031,0.6992
                                                                                                                                            B    0.1498,0.0499

  • The desktop on which I had Lightroom and PhotoshopCC installed failed and I no longer have access to it. How do I deactivate the software on those machines so that I can reinstall it on my new Mac?

Question: The desktop on which I had Lightroom and PhotoshopCC installed failed and I no longer have access to it. How do I deactivate the software on those machines so that I can reinstall it on my new Mac?

Absolutely - but I had no idea there were two versions. When I got my new laptop I just went to the Adobe site to download and install LR5. It never asked if I had a license; it just directed me to install CC to start a trial which I thought I could license after downloading. Several sessions and many hours of looking through the forums and Google for an answer I never ran across anything that made this distinction. I still haven't found a path from www.adobe.com that would get me to the standalone download page (it's probably there, wasn't obvious to me) and looking at the download page it doesn't make any CC/standalone distinction.
There are many places I could have gotten a hint - for instance the license could be tagged "stand alone edition", the CC-version could recognize the stand-alone key and either accept it or produce a more meaningful error message, or the download site or the CC app could ask if I had previously purchased a key, etc.
It was my error to assume this was a deactivation problem, but it looked the same as a previous deactivation problem with Photoshop.
In any event, thank you for your help.

  • Lightroom and Flickr ID feature gap

I'm confounded by Lightroom and its plug-ins' lack of support for Flickr's photo-ID.
Flickr photo-ID is a unique 10, 11, or 12 digit number assigned to a photo when it is uploaded to their site.
The number is used in Flickr URLs and by 3rd parties like wikipedia and wikimedia   http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=233397357&size=o  and Apple's Aperture Flickr ID meta data field.    ( The id=233397357 is the Flickr photo Id number.)
Why is this useful?  Just type that ID number into a Google search, don't include the word Flickr or ID, you will see that Flickr ID is referenced by at least ten different websites that Google searches!  Wouldn't that ID be useful information to have in your Lightroom metadata?
The schemes used by Lightroom plugin developers seem to rely on things in the file names or metadata that can change, (creation date, upload date, filename) When contacted, the LR plugin developers say they can't do something that Apple and the Aperture plug-in developers have been doing for years. Admittedly, it's not an IPTC defined field, but we have plenty of custom fields to use.
The Flickr photo-ID doesn't change if you change filename, caption, add keywords or comments, sync metadata, or do any post processing (including cropping) - other than replacing the file from your desktop.  Which seems to me to be safe so that, for example, a URL pointing to the picture above by the Wikipedia article, doesn't suddenly find a pornographic picture there.
    Jay

Have you tried the third-party Export to Flickr plugin, which has many more features than the Flickr publish service built-in to LR?  It provides the Flickr URL via the "At Flickr" metadata field, which you can access via LR's Metadata panel, with the metadata set All Plug-in Metadata.   The URL contains the Flickr ID.
