Lightroom and Photoshop render D3 files differently?

I just picked up the Nikon D3 this week and when I load the first images onto Lightroom I was shocked by how over saturated the images looked. My previous camera was a D200 and I've used Lightroom from the beginning. When I pushed the file out to Photoshop the image looked 'normal' (ie, not oversaturated, skin tones were in reasonable ranges, etc.). Is this a common problem, with a resolution?
Thanks.

I just borrowed a D3 to shoot a concert:
www.dfolio.com/proofs/SketchesMay08
so I admit to having very little experience with the D3. With that caveat, I'm having EXACTLY the same problem with images loaded into LR and I'm shooting RAW. It comes in looking fine then it says "Rendering Preview" and the result is noisier and oversaturated to the point of looking like a watercolor.
This is NOT a monitor issue, this is NOT a user preset issue just to get those out of the way. This is a camera profile issue in LR. The same kind of thing happens with pics out of my 5D where a lot of red is removed from the image so that the result looks very different than the JPG generated by the camea or a raw conversion using Canon tools. The only fix was to create a user preset to correct the images if they're from the 5D.
I'm sure it's the same thing here. The reason the first guy seems to be getting a better picture in PS is because ACR is not using the same camera profile (if any coming out of LR) and if you choose Edit Original without applying LR adjustments, it's the equivalent of zero'ing out the automatic camera profile adjustments that are made to any photo that gets imported.
My shots were all at very high ISO so it could be that LR is applying a strange profile in the high ISO range (I haven't tested any "normal" images yet but that's where the trouble lies. It's not unique to the D3 but it's waaaaay more extreme at least with these high ISO images.
If anyone has done the work to create a better preset for the D3, I would love to get a copy.'

  • Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop CS5 .psd files compatibility

Currently I'm trying to open a .psd file for a graphic in Lightroom but I cannot see any .psd extensions. Any idea how to do so? In other words, .psd is not in the supported files extensions in Lightroom? Anybody knows how to deal with such problem?

    Hi Jasonized,
Thank you for your response! I appreciate it a lot. However, I'm watching Chris Orwig who did it without a problem. The vidio is named 0205 Using a graphic identity plate.mov, time 01:40 from this movie. These are lessons for Photoshop Lightroom. The title is called 'Photoshop Lightroom 3 Essential Training' from Lynda.com.
If somebody wish I could provide him/her with the movie file to see exactly what it's all about.
I believe the answer should be something connected with compatibily in photoshop.
I would appreciate if someone give me a fresh idea how to solve this issue.
         Bye for now!! Cheers!!

  • Is it NAS the solution for a PC and MAC common Lightroom and Photoshop files or Paragon software?

I'm a Pc user willing to by a Mac. Before to do that I need to solve the problem of having to share files stored in to external drivers formated in NTFS. I'm a Lightroom and Photoshop user with various TB photo archibes. I have been suggested to make use of a PARAGON softeware or to use a NAS link to the WiFi router. How would you solve the problem, please?

    Ok.. much more complicated.
There is several things that add to the background of the story.
    1. That you are trying to backup a USB drive drive already.. I strongly recommend CCC to do this.. as you cannot setup a separate task in TM to separate the backups. I can understand not wanting to add another USB and it is older iMac so usb2 only.
    2. Your Express do add complexity.. yes they work better if using the TC..
Will replacing the ASUS with a TC improve my music streaming through the AE's given that it will all be apple then?
More than likely although hard to say.
Is the wireless range of the TC as good as the ASU in your opinion?
No, i have both and the Asus is very good.. but with the Express you can do more than you are doing.
What model Express and what model Asus we need to know to give a straight answer??
    3. I assume that if I simply replace the ASUS with a TC and use same SSID and PW it should be an easy swap since we have many mobile and networked devices in the house?
I strongly recommend you start over with new names..
Problems in wireless networks are common.. and part of the problem is trying to make one wireless router pretend to be another .. you don't fool the clients that rely on MAC address, BSSID not SSID. And you don't fool the main router.. which now is lost as to the clients expecting one MAC address and getting another.
It doesn't take that long.. use a slightly different name but the same password is fine.. I have several wireless routers.. all use the same password but different SSID.

  • How to make colors looks same in Lightroom and Photoshop?

The colors of JPGs with sRGB colorspace are displayed differently between Lightroom and Photoshop and other image view applications.
I edited RAW images in Lightroom and export them to JPG files with sRGB colorspace, but their colors are eventually different from what I saw in LR.
(I set ProPhoto as the colorspace for my Photoshop.)
Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? Or maybe to reduce the color difference?
What is the best I can do to manage colors for those images that I want to share on the internet?
    Thank you !!!

If colours look different between two colour managed applications such as LR and PS then you have either not calibrated your monitor at all or are using a corrupt monitor profile.
If the former you require a calibration device, such as a Spyder (lots of other around). If the second then re calibrate.
In the meantime you can set your monitor to use a colour space such as sRGB as a profile. This is not a solution, it is a temporary fix. Using a colour space as a monitor profile is not colour management, but will at least make the colour appear the same on your monitor.
There are some useful links concerning colour management and LR here you may wish to read.

  • Color spaces in Lightroom and Photoshop

I read that Lightroom uses the large ProPhoto color Space and then again, that it's gamma curve ist close to sRGB. So what is my color space when working in Lightroom? ProPhoto, or sRGb, or something else?
And what kind of a color management workflow between Photoshop and Lightroom do you advocate? Using ProphotoRGB or sRGB as color work space in Photoshop? I used to work in AdobeRGB in Photoshop. Has this to be changed to gain maximum color consistency?
    Thanks again for any help!
    Johann M Ginther

    Hey Claude,
if it did not have an attached profile it is almost definitely in sRGB or, more rarely, Apple RGB. Lightroom always assumes sRGB for untagged files which is typically a safe bet. Photoshop generally uses the working space for untagged images. Since you had adobeRGB there, you should get a more saturated image in photoshop then in Lightroom. The same data is simply interpreted in a different color space leading to different colors. This has nothing to do with the monitor profile therefore and my initial hunch was wrong. So for untagged images in photoshop, you should usually assign sRGB to them instead of working space.
    >As for calibration hardware we do use them here so I will use it but since the Mac was brand new out the box I assumed that it was ok...
Unfortunately, in general the canned calibration is not very good on Macs. I find very large differences between the shipped profile and a profile generated by a calibrator. Also, Apple ships profiles that set your display's gamma to 1.8 instead of the standard 2.2. This leads to many images in webbrowsers being too low contrast. Even Apple suggests recalibrating your screen at 2.2 if you do digital photography work (it's in their Aperture help files). In this case though the difference between Lightroom and Photoshop had nothing to do with the monitor profile but was related to photoshop interpreting untagged files in its working space instead of the more likely sRGB space.

  • COLOR DISPLAY IN LIGHTROOM AND PHOTOSHOP

Hi I am a new user of Lightroom but a longtime user of Photoshop.
    My question is this:
When opening the exact same TIFF file in Lightroom and Photoshop CS3 is there a way to configure Lightroom so that it will display the image exactly like Photoshop ? I mean the difference that I get is not dramatic but if there is a way to make it perfect I would love to know.
    Thanks,
    Claude from Montreal

  • I need to change the storage hard drive for both lightroom and Photoshop from my C drive to F drive

How do I change my storage drive from C to F in both lightroom and photoshop as I am running out of space on my C drive?

Storage Drive ??  Photoshop.   What Platform and OS are you running.
I use PC therefore Windows. When I thing about Application like Photoshop I know the are going to be files all over the place.  Windows like everything installed on the Boot disk.  I gave up the fight many years ago and let windows have it way when application are installed using an installer.  However besides the application files you have user files and I break user files down into to categories. Windows User files like applications settings, preferences, cashes, etc and user Data Files,  Images, text documents, PDF.   Applications like Photoshop also have add-ons an need swap space as well.  While all Windows default library reside on the C: drive you can add additional storage  to you document, music, picture and video libraries the are not on the c: Most of my user data file are actually on external ESATA drives or USB3 drives.  System files, Application Files, Paging, swapping and backup are on internal SSd and Fast Disk drive. Some of the folder that look like they are on C: are actually shortcut links to folders on other drives.

  • Updating to the cloud (Lightroom and photoshop) lightroom 5.7 already installed

    Hi !
How do I update to the CC (lightroom and photoshop) if I already have lightroom 5.7 installed and I work my photos from an external hard drive.
    I have a macbook pro.
    Thanks

    >If I uninstall Lr 5.7 from my mac, do I have to reinport all my photos into the susscription Lr ?
No. The photos are in a catalog file, not in the application so you shouldn't have to reimport. At most you need to point the CC Lightroom to your catalog file. The subscription LR is identical to the CC one, so there really is absolutely no reason to install the CC one. I would only install the CC one when LR 6 comes out.

You can right click the tab and choose "Close Tab" to close a tab.
Some menu entries are hidden by default and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu.
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F or Alt+B to open the "File" and "Bookmarks" menu and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by pressing Alt or by pressing F10.
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

  • What os does lightroom and photoshop run best on?  Mac or PC?

What os does lightroom and photoshop run best on?  Mac or PC?

I don't know to which project files you are referring but:
The Lightroom Catalog (a single file on both)
The Previews (a single folder on both)
The Smart Previews (a single folder on both)
Presets, Settings and Such (in identically nested folders within the OS construct on both)
Take it from an experienced user in both OS's. Mac simplifies somethings - PC simplifies others.

  • Why am I seeing very dark images in Lightroom and Photoshop?

I've just installed a new monitor - pretty much the same as the old one. CC was working fine on the old monitor but on the new one files opened in both Lightroom and Photoshop are very dark. I also see, briefly, a yellow triangle in the image when it opens. Are there setttings I need to change?

Are you using any sort of screen calibration?  If you are, did you disable it before attaching the new monitor?
What operating system are you using?

  • If I buy Lightroom and Photoshop CC will I be able to use the applications on both my PC and my Mac?

I have been using Photoshop CS3 for many years and finally decided it was time to upgrade. I use a Mac at home and a PC at work and also have an iPad Air. Are the Lightroom and Photoshop CC Apps compatable with both platforms or would I need to purchase two different memberships? I would obviously not use both at the same time.

Yes, you can use your two activations  with your membership for either Mac or PC just as I am doing. I have a Macbook and Windows 7 laptop, and both work well.

  • Camera Raw 8 the same cropping choices as are in Lightroom and Photoshop?

Seriously, how hard would it be to give Camera Raw 8 the same cropping choices as are in Lightroom and Photoshop (i.e., Fibonacci, Triangle, Diagonal, etc.)? This disparity in features is inexcusable and embarrassing. Surely the teams communicate?

I don't have CC nor LR.  Just be sure you are comparing apples to apples
That is a nice statement for a Windows guy…
I never use crop in ACR because I like this feature more in PS itself. Also the inability to save crop presets in ACR makes it very limited. The ACR engine for PS and LR are the same, the body differs.
Thanks to hard yelling people we now have about the same crop tool in PS as in LR. Although I still don't like it in PS, after having used it years and years I now have to move the image instead of the crop.
Sadly the ability to rotate crop and having adjust it automatically to the borders is a very nice option. If it wasn't for this I would stay with the old classic mode.
But the OP is right, many features in different Adobe Products have somewhat the same result but sometimes very different approaches, options and tools.
Until the Adobe HQ is going to settle in Utopia we might be better off trying to learn living with it

  • After buying and installing Lightroom and Photoshop...

After buying and installing Lightroom and Photoshop I have the following issues, Lightroom wont even launch and photoshop quits after launching. OS Windows 8. Any tips please?

Contacted customer care on chat and my problem has been partially solved. THis means Lightroom is not launching and works fine after a different download link was supplied. Very helpful. However Photoshop is still not working and CS agent told me that my problem will be forwarded to technical department and that they will call me (number supplied) on Monday. So far no one called. What is my next step please? Any suggestions? I need the program up and running. THanks

  • Printing: Lightroom and Photoshop

Ok...so today I tried to run my first print since getting lightroom. Quick run down on my color management (although I am still learning on this subject as well). My monitor is calibrated with an eye one display. My camera (Canon 300D) is set to AdobeRGB profile. I am running an Epson 2400, Ilford Smooth Pearl paper, with the profile provided from Ilford, and have it set to have the printer determine colors. And I am running Lightroom and Photoshop CS2.
I have been printing with this combonation beautifully for about a year now. I do have one small thing about my setup, even calibrated, my monitor is a little dark, so I must do a small curves adjustment on my final version to get the print to be perfect. I have accepted this (not the newest or best monitor) and just set an action to run before printing.
So, today, I tried to print from Lightroom. The print came out WAY too dark...I mean, my blue sky is a dark purple...odd. So I said, well I need this print, let me move it to photoshop, drop the curve and print from there. Well...the blue came out blue, but the image is still a little dark...I will play with the curve again to see if I can get it right. I don't have a problem with doing this for now, but I am wondering why the images are darker then they used to be, even in photoshop.
Also, can I create actions in Lightroom, something like develop presets that I can run AFTER I am done working on an image that we prep the document for print?
Sorry for the long post...thanks for any help...

So...you're using the canned profile from Ilford...and in Lightroom you've added that via "Other" correct? When you select that profile you are then using Lightroom color management and then you go into the Epson driver under Properties, Mode Custom and then select Off under Color Management, right? You've also selected the correct media that Ilford reccomends with the Pearl paper?
If you hit print from there than that should take care of it. Note however that if you change the page template, it _WILL_ change the print output settings making you update to the profile again.
So far, I get equal output results from Lightroom and Photoshop CS2/3 when using the same profile and printing under Mac or Win. So, if you are _NOT_ getting the same results, your settings are not equal-something somewhere is set incorrectly.
