Lightroom Backup Folder

I'd rather not store my backups with the Lightroom Library folder. I can't figure out how to specify an alternate location; of course, I can let backups happen then move the files, but I would like to specify a location. According to my reading of the help file, this doesn't seem possible. If that's the case, I would like to suggest it as a feature. Thanks!

Wow, that's great. I continue to admire how easily Lightroom works with its users needs. I teach photography, incidentally, and tonight we're discussing workflow including backing up and quickly touching on LR. I'm designing a new course dedicated to LR and workflow starting this summer (and have an existing LR intro course). Thanks, Don.

  • Lightroom backups folder.  Huge size.

In "My Pictures" is a folder called Lightroom, where all the catalogues and backups are stored.  A while ago, I had a major crash on the computer and lost everything on my hard disc.  I was able to restore most from my external hard drive.
Now, in the Lightroom folder I have the following folders:
Backups - this is 11.7 gb and contains multiple back ups.  Can I safely delete some of the older ones?
Lightroom 2 catalogue - size greater than 97 gb.  This has masses of backups inside it going back to 2008.  Also inside this folder is a Lightroom previews lrdata file of 7.7gb and a  Lightroom 2 catalogue of 1.44 gb
Lightroom 2 catalogue previews.lrdata with a number of folders 0-9 and A-F in it.  8.7 gb
Lightroom 3 catalogue previews. lrdata. Same as above but for LR3.  513 mb
Lightroom catalogue previews.lrdata This probably relates to LR1 and appears to be empty.
Lightroom previews.lrdata  Again seems to relate to LR1 and is empty.
    Lightroom settings   That's OK
Lightroom 3 backups  That's OK too.
All the above are shown as folders.  the next lot show as single sheets of paper, if that makes sense to you.
    Lightroom 2 catalogue 1.49 gb
    Lightroom 3 catalogue 41mb
    Lightroom 3 catalogue 2  261mb
    Lightroom 3 catalogue 2.lrcat-journal
When using LR3, I have not integrated the LR2 catalogue.   LR3 has only a small number of photos in it. This was advised somewhere.  I read a post in this forum a few days ago suggesting that the LR files should not be so large as these are.  I have a total of about 12,500 photos in the catalogue.
Which files can I delete?  All the LR1 files?  Old backups, keeping just the latest of each LR2 and LR3?
Why do I seem to be getting multiple backups in different folders?
I am not a computer wizard.  My understanding is limited and I don't want to delete data that should not be deleted but this does seem to be using a huge amount of disc space.
    JW

Many thanks.  I back up weekly or more often to an external drive, including all the LR files so I feel reasonably happy about them being on the same disc.  I can get rid of masses of old backups, then.  That should release some disc space.

  • Difficulty restoring a backup folder

I installed windows vista 64 bit yesterday Today I installed LR 1.41 and tried to open my last backup folder (two days old) and when I clicked on the correct date in the lightroom backup folder I receive the message "no items match your search"
How do I open and thereby restore all the data from my LR Backup?
    Thanks
    Roger Lieberman

You can collect these logs using RTMT or CLI (attaching doc for cli) and can read them using Notepad++
Hope you are trying to restore backup on exactly same version of cucm and with same IP address, host name, security password.

  • Lightroom Backup problem

Lightroom does not backup my catalog.  I think I move Backup folder to the wrong place.  It does not give me the Backup dialog when I exit.  This is how I set it up to Back up.
Where should the Backup file be located for Lightroom to find it and backup my catalog?

I would check the settings in Catalog Settings. If the dialog box is not showing, then it probably isn't set to make backups every time you exit Lightroom.

  • Forgot to move lightroom backup files

Hi, I recently changed my laptops and in the transition I goofed up with Lightroom 5 backup data. I copied over the lightroom catalog files but forgot to copy the lightroom raw images backup folder, like the ones named 2014, 2015, 1,2, etc. I have the original raw images from my camera sd card. Is there a way I can re-apply the changes I did in my catalogs to these original raw images? I tried the feature find missing raw images, but it did not work. Any suggestions on this?
    Thanks!

Thanks dj_paige! I will try this tonight. I just took a quick glance and still have this question: I dont have the old backup folders (2014, 2015, etc) saved anymore. They are gone. I just have catalog files and raw images on sd card. Not sure if the above link works for this situation as well. Will try it and let you know. Thanks for the comment!

i backup my iphone on my pc and copy backup file into drive D then i setup new OS on my pc. after that i copy the backup file into itunes backup folder but itunes can't find the backup file to restore my iphone. how can i restore my iphone?

Don't you just love changes in interfaces?
I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

  • Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers

Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks.  The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external.  There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message.  After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to.  So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other.  The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
    (1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used.  When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder.  For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
    (2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size.  Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
    (3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB.  As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using.  I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
    Many thanks!!

The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.
See this site for more information about time machine and how it works: http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

  • What have I done to cause my iTunes Backup folder to be missing?

    Hey Folks,
This will take a few paragraphs to explain, but if you haven't had coffee yet, then you may
be able to explain to anybody else reading this what I have done, and more importantly, how it gets undone.
In reading this, my general question is do I start over from scratch by reinstalling Lion? I believe this is a permissions issue
that (from what I can tell) only concerns iTunes itself.
Purchased a current generation Mini (i5 2.3 Ghz, 8GB Ram, 500 GB HD, OS 10.7.4, iTunes 10.6.1) to replace my old Mini
(G4 1.5 Ghz PPC, 1GB Ram, 80 GB HD, OS 10.5.8, iTunes 10.6) earlier this month. I Set up Admin account (#1), and proceeded
to get things going. At a point I created Admin account (#2), wanting to transfer my data from a Time Machine backup made on my
old Mini. Got the data moved over, and noticed that the permissions were kind of funny. Deleted #1 Admin account, since data was
    actually transferred under #2 account.
As the title suggests, the backup folder, and the MobileSync folders were missing from the Application Support folder under the
Library folder. I created them hoping that if iTunes saw it, it would put the backup file (unfindable now) that it says it creates when I
connect my iPod Touch (4th gen.) for syncing. All music is available, and podcasts are uneffected. It shows a backup in iTunes, but
I can't find it anywhere.I reinstalled iTunes 10.6.1 trying to resolve the situation, but to no avail. Deleted iTunesHelper Application
from Admin account startup items at one point, but was able to get it back upon searching through iTunes package contents.
Connecting the Touch does launch iTunes, as it should.
How badly have I messed this up? Have repaired disk permissions several times, but that doesn't help. So many questions.
If I understand Unix right, the first Admin account was the "root" account. Does the fact that it's been deleted, effect things more than
transferring settings from the older Mini? I need more brains than I have, and am lucky the Mini is running like a champ otherwise. Can
anybody with a better understanding of the system help me out, please? Is there a "key" permission or other indicator that would clearly
define wether this is a Admin account issue versus something else? Sure, I got myself here. The question is can YOU help me get past
me? I can supply as much additional information as needed. Thank you very much in advance. Best to you in 2012 and beyond.
    Regards,
    Willard

In case anybody was wondering, I did end up reinstalling Lion using Internet recovery. Couldn't use local Disk Utilities to try and correct what happened after my last story like entry. Things got worse quickly, and at one point I was holding the power button down to turn just it off. It didn't help that the Mac wouldn't make a wireless connection. As many times as I put in the correct password it was asking for, it would shake the password box and sit there waiting for me to slap myself in the head, again. Connected the Mac using an Ethernet cable, and about 3.5 to 4 hours later it actually started up as it was supposed to. I'm relieved that the Ethernet cable worked, and the download started instantly.  Have kept to one admin account, and things are good again. If you need Internet recovery, I'd suggest that an Ethernet cable could be your new best friend for how ever long it takes to download. This answers the prior stories question, but the experience of using Internet recovery is the bright spot here. No optical drive, no problem. It worked.

  • Time capsule won't back up - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Any ideas?

I have tried all the resets, the firmware is the latest version, the green light is on.
But I get this message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
    Any ideas?

Do setup again.. but make sure both your wireless and your ethernet have ipv6 turned on to local link.
Done this OK, but no idea about IPv6 - something new to me and rather Appley I think?
Unplug the WAN for the moment.. Just LAN port TC to the MBPr ethernet via thunderbolt.. (thunderbird was the kids puppet series.. Thunderbirds are go!!). Done - New real people Thunderbirds movie coming out soon I believe!!!
Reset the TC again.. sorry.. !! You're welcome ... done.
Make sure the ethernet now has an IP address.. 10.0.1.2 - Yep - done that - on ethernet anyway ...
You need to open the network preferences to find out. Yep - that's good ...
****** I then reconnect the TC WAN to the router - is this right?
And then I think I start going round in circles ... boot, reboot, restart, reboot again ...
The final result is green light on TC, but error message when trying TM is "Backup disk is not available".
Then open the airport utility and you should be able to setup the TC.
Do as little setup as possible and then run the TM backup and see how it goes.
I have managed to get Thunderbird to LAN on TC to create a folder on TC and copy a file onto it.
So I guess the drive is working - it must be the software, settings or perhaps even the operator that isn't quite so clever ...
I named network RFG, named device RFGTC.  RFG network shown as IP 192.168.0.72
Wireless router is BT Homehub 3 with IP of 192.168.0.254 - is this issuing new IP addresses when rebooting TC?
I have three wireless networks here - the BT Homehub3 wireless, the TC wireless, and also a D-link power socket ethernet thingy for an ethernet connection to the telly - DHP-W310AV which is also wireless link.  All are effectively connected to the BT Homehub - is there a conflict there?
Have several times achieved in Airport Utility schematic with internet shown as green, RFGTC shown as green, light on TC green, but no TM backup run ... "backup disc not available."
And there are no tall building around here to hurl myself off ... at least you can go to Sydney Harbour bridge - not too far away ... it was my son in Sydney that persuaded me to scrap Windows and go Apple ... it's all his fault ...

  • I am setting up a time machine backup to a external Hard drive.  I want to backup by Mac book Pro running OSX 10.8.5. I would like to Partition the disk and use one partition for Time machine backups and the other for my Lightroom backups. How to do this?

I want to create a two partition disk. One partition for time machine, the other for Lightroom backup. Currently Time Machine is using the entire drive and it is doing the intial encryption and is about 29% complete after two days.  I've decided that I want to turn encryption off and partition the disk. So I do I start over?

With the external drive attached, open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.  Select the external drive from the list in the left side panel of the DU window.  In the main window panel, click Partition in the buttons top center of that panel.
Select the number of partitions you want and adjust their sizes.
For the first partition, click to highlight the partition, then select the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then the partition table as GUID [both of those are the defaults].  Click Apply and it will ask to confirm and erase and format that partion...oh, give the partition a name, like Backup.
Then repeat those steps for the second partition..and remember to name it...something like Lightroom.
Close Disk Utilitty and you are ready to send TM to the one partition, and do your backup of Lightroom to the second partition.

  • How do I copy the Time Machine backup folder to another folder? (Mac 10.7.5)

Short version:  I like to make an initial backup of my Mac OS before I start installing stuff...just in case I need to get back to square one down the road.  I travel as a freelancer for work, so every couple of months, I'm on a new rented system.  But I need to move that initial backup folder to a sub-folder so that I can continue to run TM without ever deleting anything from that initial backup.  When I go to move or copy it to another folder or drive, it tells me I don't have permission. How do I get permission to move it?
I've tried changing the permissions on the folder itself... It won't let me select any other users, and admins are not on the "write" list.  No dice.
    Any ideas?
    I'm on a Mac Pro 8-core
    MacPro3,1
    OS 10.7.5
    Thanks!

Yeah, sorry...but there doesn't seem to be a "Time Machine" forum anywhere, this was the closest I could find.  I could have posted in OS 10.7 forum...but I was worried the traffic would be much lighter there.  If I should move my question there, I will.
Ok, so my Time Machine has backed up to my external drive which I have split into two separate partitions.  I do not have automatic backups on.  I just ran it once to get the "footprint" before I start to alter things to my needs.  I'd like to compress and put away the backup on that first partition as sort of a general "back to square one" backup.  I chose to use Time Machine because I can literally restore it back to all the original settings, etc.  This is just a fire plan, but I really want to lock it off.
Then, I want to set my second partition on that same drive as my incremental Time Machine backup.  That way, once I run out of space and it begins deleting the old stuff (and I will run out of space...I export several hundred gigs of video files per day), I can always retain that initial backup.
The problem is, when I go to move that backup....AFTER I've pointed Time Machine to the new partition...or any other drive for that matter... It tells me that either the folder doesn't have "ownership rights" or it simply "cannot do that."  (I'll snag you a screen grab next time I'm by it if you want.)
So, how do I get it to move where I want it so that I can make a new one?

  • Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off.  Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics.  Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac.  After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore.  In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year.  To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period!  Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos.  So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on.  These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine.  But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified.  This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April.  Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage?  If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
    Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    Regards

  • How do I find a corrupted file in a backup folder on my computer?

I have recently had to replace the battery in my iphone, but before doing so, I had backed up the phone about 3 times, all saying they were successful.  And then I had erased the phone(before I realised the battery was the problem).  However when I went back to restore from the backup, it says that it cannot be restored because the backup is corrupt.  I read on one site that sometimes if a phone turns off or disconnects while backing, it might cause a corrupt file, and I think that's exactly what my phone did due to the battery issues.  The big question is, is it only specific files inside the backup folder that are corrupt?  And how do I find out which files they are?  Please help.

    Hi
This can be an issue on other end ( server end ) as export to HTML works fine so Muse is exporting the files correctly but while exporting to external server if it stuck then we should check on server side if there is any problem related to specific file upload.
As a workaround, you can use any FTP client and then upload the exported html files to root location.
    Thanks,
