Lightroom & Bridge

If I move photos to another folder or create new folders in Lightroom, I understand that Lightroom is using thumbnails within Lightroom. The original photos have not been moved and they still reside in whatever folder they were originally put into when they were imported into your PC. I am clear on this process.
Now the issue is that when I view my hierarchy in Bridge, any of these folders or photo moves that were done in Lightroom don't exist. Is there anyway to "marry" up Lightroom moves previously done in Lightroom, with Bridge?
Bob

Lee Jay, you are correct!! On my PC, when I moved a folder of photos within Lightroom, those changes did in fact show up in Bridge. On my friends PC yesterday, the moves we did in Lightroom, were NOT reflected in Bridge. Any thoughts?
Perhaps we could  remove and reinstall Lightroom on his computers? If we do that, would we create a new catalog? And if we did create a new catalog, any edits done in Lightroom would be gone right?
Last new question. When I move a folder of photos with Lightroom, and attempt to scroll up or down my Library, the scroll speed is incredibly fast, making it difficult to stop where I want to drop.

It's important to keep in mind that the picture files are NOT stored in the Organizer. They are not stored in Lightroom or Bridge either...
The organizer is based on a catalog which stores the pictures properties, mainly the location of the pictures on your drive(s). It's the same idea of catalogs in Lightroom, and the nice thing is that Lightroom can convert organizer catalogs to its own format. The most obvious way for you will be to use Lightroom.
Bridge is a file browser which is a different way than to use catalogs.

  • Out of sync - Lightroom & Bridge

I have about 550 images that I shot in Canon Raw. I launched Adobe Bridge so that I could make some universal/global changes to all of the images (Camera Profile,  White Balance, Contrast, Vibrance, Clarity, etc.) in Camera Raw. After I made the changes, I launched Lightroom so that I could tweak the images individually. Occasionally, I'd have the need to go back and forth between Lightroom and Bridge, when I'd want to make more global changes to multiple images.
What I'm now finding is that the images are not in sync between the two applications. I'll make changes in Bridge (Camera Raw) to several images, and then go back to Lightroom, and the changes aren't reflected. In Lightroom, I choose "Syncronize Folder", and it goes through the motions, but the images don't sync. When I go to open each image in Photoshop from Lightroom & Bridge, I still have two separate, completely deferent images. If I open the image from the Finder, I get the Bridge version, which is the last version that I've modified.
    Help!?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Before an explanation of having LR and Bridge/ACR see each other's edits, please note that the global things you say you are doing in ACR/Bridge can be done just as easily in LR and maybe easier, using the Sync... button or Copy/Paste settings and you'll save yourself a lot of grief and needing to be careful if you forget about Bridge/ACR for en masse things whenever possible, as long as you are using LR with the same images.
Ok now for how to make Bridge and ACR see each other's changes:
Bridge stores edits in an XMP sidecar, while LR stores them internally and to synchronize them is not always as easy as you'd expect; however, if you manually read and write the XMP files from LR then you can make it work.
First, you should make sure that your default settings for toning and everything else are identical between ACR and LR otherwise LR and ACR will use their defaults for things that aren't specified in the XMP files and you might have differences.
If you do things in Bridge/ACR as your very first step, then it should generate XMP files that have the same base filename as the RAW but with an XMP extension.  When you import files into LR then it will use things it sees in the XMP sidecar files for its initial settings, but then it internalizes them and you have to do something to make it write the changes back out to the XMP files if you are going to edit them in Bridge, again.
If your first step is to Import the files into LR for sorting then Bridge won't know anything about any changes you also make unless you create XMP files for the images you've changed.
You can either have LR automatically write the changes to XMP files (a preference sets this) or you can do it manually by doing Library / (select all) / Metadata / Write Changes to Files (note the S on Files if multiple files are selected which they aren't if you are in Develop) and this is safest, anyway, in case LR hasn't caught up writing things automatically to XMP files if you've made mass changes in LR.
Once any LR changes are in the XMP files, then Bridge/ACR will see them.
Once you are done with Bridge/ACR you have to do something to tell LR there are changes it needs to look for in the XMP files, since its primary location for changes is in its internal database.  You can use Library / (select all) / Metadata / Read Changes from Files to overwrite LR's settings with whatever is in the XMP file.
You have to be careful with this and not erase changes by writing when you should be reading or reading when you should be writing.  To fix the situation you find yourself in, now, you may have to forego your changes in either LR or Bridge by telling LR to editor Read Metadata from Files (overwrites LR changes) or Write Metadata to Files (overwrites Bridge changes).
I think the Synchronize can be used if the dates in the XMP file are newer than what LR has internally but I'm not sure if this always works and someone else will have to give the definite answer on Synchronize.  I gave up using Bridge/ACR along with LR a long time ago and just do all my en masse edits in LR and just use ACR the conversion into Photoshop when I use Edit In Photoshop from LR.
There are other things to be aware of:  LR has a Write Metadata to Files on the right-click menu from a library folder.  This is a shortcut for producing the initial set of XMP files, but it only does this for images where something has actually changed since the file was imported or since the last time the XMP was updated from LR, so you may have to trick it by selecting all the files and doing a relative up and down of something in the Quick Develop panel--something like Clarity or Saturation that is not likely to be maxed out in any of the files that you're tweaking settings of just to make the changes "newer" than the last time.

  • Xap rating metadata lightroom bridge cs2

Is there anyone out there who can tell me why the xap metadata is written so differently in lightroom jpegs as compared to bridge CS2?
I've had writtena feature on my dynamic gallery on my website that reads the xap rating in bridge-produced jpegs, but doesn't work with lightroom produced ones. When I read the metadata from the 2, the structure was totally different. I dont suppose anyone from the development team would care to tell us how lightroom and bridge CS2 read the different xap structures - it would give me a clue how to re-write the function on my website.
Also are there plans to make the current structure standard? Does bridge CS3 for instance produce jpegs with the same structure in the metadata?
    Thanks!

Yup, Bridge is just a Browser. ACR and Photoshop do the work.

  • Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, who knows what when?

Sorry for the bizarre title, but I"m not sure exactly how the whole connection between everybody with Smart Objects is supposed to work...  Is this a Photoshop thing, a Bridge thing, or a Lightroom thing?
I have a RAW image in Lightrom...  I make adjustments.  I open it in Photoshop as a Smart Object.  Add layers, fiddle, do normal Photoshop stuff.
Then I realize I goofed on the original RAW in Lightroom and had sharpened it BEFORE I went into Photoshop.
So, I open the RAW back up from Photoshop, which of course, opens in Bridge, NOT Lightroom, and fix the sharpening.  Then back to Photoshop where I finish fiddling and save the .psd file.
EXCEPT, as near as I can tell, I now have a RAW file in Lightroom that doesn't know changes have been made.
And, since I haven't written the metadata to the RAW file on disk, I have a file in Lightroom that doesn't match what's on disk, a .psd file that doesn't match the RAW file that's in Lightroom,
and changes made in Bridge that don't seem to be anywhere...
How do I make sure the RAW file in Lightroom stays up-to-date with what's being used as the starting image in Photoshop?  And how do I get Lightroom updated with whatever changes got made in Bridge?

    davepinminn wrote:
I must still be doing something wrong here..............
You have the wrong expectation—namely because you don't grasp the concept. A smart object is not a linked file.  It's a new file all on its own (in PSB format) with no connection to the original file at all.
    davepinminn wrote:
…I can open my raw (.dng) into Photoshop as a smart object.  And in PS, I can open the smart object into ACR.  Works fine.  And I can change stuff.  For example, if I change the exposure from -.25 to +.20, it changes perfectly in PS, as I'd expect.  But, I'm still not getting the changes back to the original raw (.dng) file…
There is no reason why the changes made to a Smart Object oject should be refleftef to a totally unrelated file.
    davepinminn wrote:
…Do I need to do something different to get the changes back to the original file…
Yes. you have to go back to that original file and apply the changes directly to it.  In a previous post, Jeff Schewe told you of a shortcut to achieve that:
    Jeff Schewe wrote:
When you are in the Camera Raw SO with ACR open, go to the main flyout menu and select Export settings to XMP. This will write the new image settings from the SO to the xmp metadata. Then in Lightroom, select Read metadata from file in the main Metadata menu. That will bring in all the settings of the raw SO back into Lightroom. So, while not automatic, it's not as bad as writing down the settings and entering them by hand.

  • Keywords in Lightroom/Bridge

I have all my photos marked with a lot of keywords i Bridge, but I would like to use Lightroom to add keywords to all my new Photos, but if I do that, Bridge can't read them
Any one who knows what to do ???

Thanks for the very good and usefull answer, it works like a charm
The solution is simple, I can see that now, but haven't thought of saving the darn thing.

  • Lightroom, Bridge, Photoshop version compatibility

I am now using Lightroom 1.1 and also have Photoshop CS2 (version 9.0.2), Bridge CS2 and of course Camera Raw (version ?)installed on my Windows XP computer. My question is, do I have to upgrade to Photoshop CS3 and Camera Raw 4 for compatibility with Lightroom? Also, how do I know which version of Camera Raw is installed?
    PB

Lightroom has its own version of Camera RAW. The only reason you'd need to upgrade to CS3 is to get the latest version of Camera RAW, and the only reason you'd need to do that is if you want to be able to open the images you edit in Lightroom in Camera RAW and still have all the edits in place. You can open the image itself (processed through Lightroom) in Photoshop will all the edits in place regardless of what version you are using (I use Elements 3.0).

  • Lightroom/Bridge/InDesign

I have been urging a friend of mine to switch over to Lightroom, as an alternative to Bridge/Photoshop, as he's currently doing. He's open to the change but has asked me a good question that I can't answer.
He does a lot of work with InDesign and he has the ability to drag and drop photos from Bridge, into InDesign. Quite a nice feature I must admit and something he will be unable to do with Lightroom. Is it possible for any edits he makes in Lightroom, to still appear in Bridge, to maintain his "drag and drop" capability with InDesign?
I am using InDesign myself a lot more lately and I too would like to continue with the ability to drag and drop.
    Bob

Sorry Tom but that doesn't work. Lr can save the XMP develop tags (or write a sidecar) easily enough, but:
Bridge doesn't read or respect develop tags in non-raw files (try making a JPEG black and white, Ctrl=S, then open in Bridge).
InDesign can't place raw files (neither does it bother reading the develop tags in anything it can place)
The working solution is to develop in Lr then export your images to non-raw files (JPG/TIFF), so you get a baked result that can be placed into InDesign (and will look right in Bridge / Explorer / Finder).

  • Keywords conflict between Lightroom & Bridge

I am new to Lightroom but have used Bridge for a long time.
My Bridge keywords have evolved over time and various hierarchies and parent keywords have been changed many times to reflect my needs.
I find that when I import older images into Lightroom, older parent keywords, long deleted from Bridge, reappear in the Lightroom workspace.
When I update metadata in Lightroom and write the data back to the original files, the old hierarchies and parent keywords reappear in Bridge and in the file's keyword list.
I cannot find a way around this problem.

    Erik Bloodaxe wrote:
It occurs with any file type in particular I am using dng and jpg regularly.
By experimentation Lightroom seems to show the long deleted parent keyword which once contained a particular keyword. The parent keywords were EXCLUDED in Bridge when they were added to an image but they show in Lightroom.
Open one of the DNG or JPEG files in PS and check File> File Info> Description tab> Keywords using PS's XMP reader. If the excluded keywords are showing here they will also show inside LR.
As DdeGannes mentioned to see Bridge metadata changes inside LR you'll need to select the files inside LR and apply menu item Metadata> 'Read Metadata from File.' Conversely, if you select Metadata> 'Save Metadata to File' (CTRL + S) LR will "overwrite" the Bridge metadata with the keywords visible in LR. It's important to keep the Bridge and LR metadata "synchronized:"
    1) Update LR with any changes made inside Bridge using Metadata> Read Metadata from File from the LR menu for ALL changed files. You should do this BEFORE making ANY keyword changes to a file inside LR.
    2) After making keyword change inside LR apply Metadata> 'Save Metadata to File' immediately so that the changes are written to the file(s), making them visible inside Bridge.
I'm guessing that somewhere in time keywords were edited in LR and Bridge without following the above "synchronization" steps. If PS's XMP reader shows keywords "excluded" in Bridge then that's probably what happened. If the excluded keywords are NOT showing in XMP (but still visible inside LR) then further investigation is required.

  • I have CC with all the latest versions of photoshop, lightroom, bridge when I'm in PS and click file browse in bridge ... bridge doesn't open instead it brings me to the CC desktop screen

Bridge not opening when doing a browse in bridge from Photoshop cc 2014..  Bridge opens fine on its own..

Again, thanks for the quick answer but in searching around the web I found someone respond that it looked like a issue that would go away with an uninstall and reinstall of PS CC 2014.  I did that and rebooted my PC and the round trip now works.  I am guessing that the problem was caused when the new version was added without the 2 earlier versions being removed.  When I remeoved the older 2 versions, I expect the link was scrambled.  Now all is ok.

  • The photography program Photoshop, Lightroom & Bridge

I recently joined the Creative Cloud Photography Plan.  My operating system is Windows 7 64 bit.  After installing the above programs when I shut down the computer I get the message :  Waiting for background programs to close Windows Task Host.  I was not getting that message when shutting down my computer prior to installing the 3 products included in the photography program.  The computer has 8GB of RAM and the NVIDA GTX 650 ti graphics card with 2GB of RAM.  There is 492 GB of free space on the c drive and 500 GB of free space on the second hard drive. I am worried that I may be damaging my computer in some way.  If anyone else knows of something I should do please let me know. I have not uninstalled CS6 or Bridge CS6 due to some plugins not being compatible with the Cloud products.

If Windows shuts down after a few seconds, then you're ok.
The Windows Task Host that you referred to in your first message is a hidden process involved in I'm not sure what, but Windows Task Manager is something to view the processes running and resources used by them that you start and stop yourself.
When you instruct Windows to shut-down, it notifies each process that it is shutting down, and those processes are supposed to respond to that shutdown signal by shutting themselves down.  If after a certain number of seconds processes are not shut down, yet, then Windows shows those in a list--in case it is a program, like Wor or Photoshop that is prompting you to save a document or something else that you need to intervene on behalf of and cancel the shutdown.  If the processes in that list do eventually shut down before the pre-configured wait-for-processes-to-shut-down timelimit then nothing bad will happen; it is only when one of those processes doesn't shut down in time (like Photoshop asking if you want to save your image) and Windows has to kill it before it was ready that something might not be optimal.
As to why you've just started seeing this after your recent installs, there is probably just a little more going on like Adobe license processes or more RAM and virtual-memory usage or something else like that, which is making the processes respond slower to the Windows shutdown signal so you're being notified that things are still running.  Again, as long as those things are eventually shutting down wtihout being killed by the OS, then you're ok.

  • How can I remove Photoshop/lightroom/bridge from my old mac to my new mac?

I bought from Adobe the package with ps/lr/br and payed already for a year.
Now I bought a new mac and would like to remove the programs from my old mac to my new mac. So, how can I do?
They are connected with watch other now and I deinstalled the Creative cloud on my old one, so what can I do now? How can I install the programs on my new mac without paying again?

Install the Creative Cloud manager on the new machine and load up the applications from there.

What are you talking about?  The Cloud is a software distribution and licensing mechanism, not a place to run software from.   The software runs on your local computer as it always has.
