Lightroom Catalog mix-up. Help please?

I am struggling hard, and failing, to make a new master catalog from 2 earlier, differing, ones. I have an iMac, Lr 5.6, and import into date folders in My Lightroom Folder (in Pictures). I know how to export folders as a catalog, I think, but seem unable to import these (via File/Import from another catalog) into the relevant date folder in my Folders on the LHS of the screen, or indeed to direct where they are going to.
I have Time Machine backups and the actual images are backed up onto an external hard drive.
Any help much appreciated! Thanks.

You don't have remove folders that aren't where they should be.
You just have to drag and drop them to where they should be (this is done entirely in Lightroom, not in your operating system).
It seems like a fair chunk of work to make the folders appear the way you want them to be.
If you feel your are missing something obvious, I think the overall design of the organization of your photos might be the obvious thing you are missing, and again I state my personal preference that I'd rather do the work keywording my photos than having a dated folder structure, I find that to be much more valuable. Anyway, it's your choice. And Lightroom does not have an automated way to clean up your dated folder structure.
I also think it is a mistake to use Scott Kelby's books for advice on organization. I find his writings on organizing to be very limited and inappropriate for many Lightroom users, but certainly appropriate for photographers like Kelby that do distinct photo shoots.

  • Replacing two full external hard drives and keeping Lightroom 5 happy. Help please!

I use two external hard drives for storing photos and Lightroom backups - I do not have any photos stored on my Mac. As a result, they are almost full (25000 images) and I need to replace them with two higher capacity devices. I don't really know how to do this and still keep Lightroom 5 'onside'. I guess that I'd have to sync my drives one at a time with the new ones using Chronosync. Then, I'm also guessing that if I name the new drives exactly as I named the old ones, then Lightroom would carry on accessing the images as if nothing had changed. Am I correct with this assumption? If anyone out there has a better solution for me then I'd be very grateful for the advice. Thank you.

    I don't blame you..
Definitely get things working with the new drives before re-formating (or deleting files from) the old drives. And make a copy of your catalog too. That way your vulrnerable parts are covered .
But Lightroom was designed to be able to withstand drive name changes on Mac, or drive letter changes in Windows..., so the odds are in your favor .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Set up Lightroom for my workflow - Help Please!!

    Hi Guys,
(PC/Win XP pro/Lightroom 1.3/PS CS3 running on large PC with plenty of everything!! - Printing on 7880 Epson through qimage)
I have been working on Bridge/CS3 and want to set uplightroom for the following workflow (easy in Bridge but I cant seem to figure it out in LR).
I want all raw images to reside in a folder on HDD (say jane smith wedding). (that bit is easy- even I could manage that!)I want all work files (Xmp or whatever) and all developed images (low/high res) to reside in the same folder (there was a simple command in bridge - export to same location - that could be set as default but I cannot find in LR.)
I also need to export a jpeg crop ( I cant find a crop tool for inches!!)of my corrected image at say 10x7@ 240dpi for inkjet printing through Qimage and a second jpeg say @ 70dpi with copyright mark for a slideshow in proshow gold.(is there a setting for "save in same location with work files). So I would end up with a folder for example R/jane smith wedd with subfolders develops and previews. This folder should contain ALL workfiles so when i archive ALL files go with it. ( also I would be able to open the raws with corrections applied on a home computer with CS3 but not lightroom running.)
    I admit Im thick!!
Any help would be really appreciated, nigel
PS: Memo to Adobe: What were you thinking of with no way to save contact sheets.......? Also no way to export music with the slideshow......?

    1. You need to turn on "automatically write XMP" in preferences. Then the settings data will be saved as you make changes in LR and CS3 can use these settings to open images. You could also convert to DNG for the same end result.
2, If you want your exports in the same folder then just select that folder in the export dialogue. You also have the option of creating a sub folder to store the exports in. It doesn't have a save to same location default but it's not such a pain to pick a folder. I actually send my edits to a different drive just in case of corruption.
    3. There's no cropping done by the crop tool so you can't assign a dpi to it. Crop it the way you like it (you can set an aspect ratio if you like. Nothing happens until you export and that's where you select dpi, watermarking etc for output files. In the export dialogue just enter the settings you want. You can also save several sets of output settings for quick retreival later on.
    4. To save contact sheets install a free PDF printer and just print the contact sheets to it. Mind you because Adobe wont let you select sRGB as an output space and insists on Pro Photo RGG (don't get me started...) the colours will be washed out and horrible. You can also save your contact sheet settings so redoing it really isn't that big of a deal. Printing and saving contact sheets worked really well up to 1.1 after that Adobe broke it and it's the thing I miss the most. All they need to do is allow us to select an output colour space when using printer managed printing so I can have sRGB printing back.
Don't know about the slide show thing, sorry.
    Hope this helps

  • Lightroom catalog backup find missing file location- please help!

    Hi,
Before I start, if anyone can answer this question I would be so grateful. I would cry!
    Ok, so let me start.
Recently I cleared my whole entire mac and backed up everything on a hard drive. when I reinstalled lightroom on my clean mac, I also imported the catalog that I backed up.  It all worked fine, and this post isn't about a lost catalog, or accidentally deleted photos.
So, what is hapenning is. When I imported my catalog I got an error message, for all the photos and folders. this:
So I found re-finding the folder, or finding the "missing file location" (which is so annoying because I wished Lightroom just backed up the pictures along with the catalog). But when I found the folder, only some photos showed up and some still displayed the exclamation mark.
Now I do have all the photos with the exclamation marks in folders on my backup hard drive, BUT they are all unedited raw versions. I honestly cannot go back and edit 2000 photos, especially after me having to clean all of the photos when my camera had over 30 spots of sensor dust on the photos. So those backup photos are what lightroom backed up, but I want to know how I can recover the photos in the lightroom catalog with the edits APPLIED.
May I PLEASEE get help on this. I am SO STUCK and do not want to mess up ANYTHING at all!
I would appreciate so much for ANY help! PLEASE!
    Kind regards,
    Josh

  • Lightroom 4 Corrupt Catalog... Please Help!!!

    Hello,
I recently tried to open lightroom 4 and I got an error message that states "The Lightroom catalog "Lightroom 4 Catalog" is corrupt and cannot be used or backed up until it is repaired".  When I click "Repair catalog" Lightroom is unable to.  I have tried renaming the catalog as was suggested in a similar fourum topic, but this did not work either.  PLEASE HELP.  I regretably have not backed up my catalog in a long time and there is a mountain of work I will have to redo if I can't fix this. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Aloha,
    David

    Hi guys,
Thanks for responding. So I tried creating a new catalog and then importing from the currupt one and it did not work.  It says "lightroom cannot import this catalog because of an unknown error".
So this whole thing happened when my external drive, containing my lightroom catalog, accidentally came unplugged from my computer while I was working on photos. I have not been able to open the catalog since.  Any other suggestions?
    Thank you for your help!!

  • Everytime I open lightroom I get a pop up message saying "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and it closes. Ive already tried reinstalling, nothing seems to work. Help please!

Open the folder containing your catalog. In that folder you will find another folder with the extension .lrdata, and you need to delete that folder. After you do that, Lightroom should start normally and will create a new preview cache.

  • My Lightroom 3 closed after trying to edit a photo and will not open again.  Help please!

My Lightroom 3 closed after editing a photo and will not open again.  It says Lightroom is not working and Windows is looking for a solution.  I am in a bind and need my Lightroom opened asap.  Please help!

In your operating system, go to the folder where your Lightroom catalog is stored and see if there is a file that ends with .lock
If so, delete it and then LR will open properly.

after mixing a project i select bounce and burn the disc that is burned plays on any cd player but when i try to burn the wav or mp3 file that was created the resulting disc will only play in a computer this also happens with video projects help please are there any settings i need to alter as it seems the wav or mp3 file i ceated is being converted to a data file somewhere between the folder and disc drive

Same thing for a movie file.. If you want to play back the movie via a DVD and a DVD player you must create a Movie DVD  and not just burn files to a data DVD... as Data DVDs are just storage devices for files and therefore will only work with computers...
Movie DVDs are special formats that include things like menus and special file formats.. so they can playback via a DVD Player...
You will need a 3rd party DVD Burning app like Toast which is what i actually use.... or the more popular DVD Creator app...to create and then burn a Movie DVD that will playback on a DVD Player....

  • Lightroom color not consistant with PSCS4/Bridge. Help please.

    Hi All,
I started with a search, but didn't find an answer that covered what I'm seeing.
OK, first of all, let me set this.
I'm running a MacBook Pro 2.2, OSX 10.6, with a 23" Apple Cinema Display (non-glossy screen) attached as my main work monitor for my LR, PSCS and all my other photography and graphics work. Any reference here is referring to the 23' ACD as that is my calibrated color reference point. And for the record, both the ACD and the MBP are fully hardware calibrated on a regular bases.
What I'm seeing is gorgeous color and pop in LR, but more muted colors in PSCS4 and Bridge. I have noticed that if I open a single image in both PSCS4 and Apple's 'Preview' app, the PSCS4 rendering matches the Bridge preview dead-on. While the 'Preview' app's rendering looks more like the LR previews. So it would seem to me that LR is 'talking' to the systems color rendering, while PSCS4 and Bridge are more, 'on their own', yet talking to each other.
I work almost completely in Adobe 98 color space. I export out of LR into PCSC4 as Adobe 98 PSD files. I continue to work in Adobe 98, and even re-enter the PSD files back into my Lightroom catalogs with their attached color space. In LR, I get the same 'look'. Nicely saturated color with a little pop, but if I open up the files again in PSCS4 they again, look somewhat 'muted'. But, I have tried this using multiple file types (psd, jpeg, raw) as well as sRGB color space. The results are the same. It seems application specific, NOT file-type specific.
Now I can understand maybe a slight color difference between PSCS/Bridge and say maybe Corel 'Painter'. But I am not understanding this obvious color difference between supposed related Adobe apps such as LR and PSCS4, again, while working on the same calibrated monitor.
FYI, my Epson 2400, using Epson's custom profiles, looks fantastic printing out of LR's Print module. (I love the LR Print module!).
My problem here is, I need to send files out to certain print houses for album printing and such (usually in sRGB color space). I have confidence with what I'm seeing in the Lightroom previews of my files. But the PSCS4 files are just too 'dull' looking. Kind of nervous to let them go out the door.
Final note, my entire Adobe Creative Suite is set to 'North American Prepress 2'.
Thanks for any help you can send my way.
    -Sol

One thing I would try is to run with only one monitor (close the MacBook's lid and unsleep it by hitting a key on an external keyboard or only use the built-in display) and see if the problem persists.
Lightroom and Photoshop use the exact same color management module with just a few small differences. In general, you should get identical rendering of colors but for a few exceptions. One is that Lightroom always uses perceptual intent rendering and Photoshop always uses relative. Some color calibrators generate v4 profiles with a built in perceptual profile. The colormunki is one of those. With profiles like that you will see very subtle differences between Lightroom and Photoshop. Generally not something as strong as what you describe. Another difference is that Lightroom in the Develop module does NOT apply the color noise reduction when zoomed out, only when zoomed in at 1:1 or higher. The result of this is that sometimes, if you have lots of saturated color fine detail, the Develop module shows you a falsely oversaturated image when zoomed out. A good example of this happens with flowers in a grass field, finely detailed fall color leaves, or neon lights. You can see the effect by switching back and forth between Develop and Library or simply by zooming in at 1:1. Library will appear far less saturated as will the 1:1 display. You can solve this issue by lowering the color noise reduction to zero. Lastly, you wouldn't be the first to be fooled by the relatively dark background in Lightroom. This can make everything appear more saturated than the equivalent display in Photoshop which usually has a lightish grey as background or simply your desktop. This is a small effect but I have found it to be surprisingly large a few times. You can change the color of the background in Lightroom to play with this by control (or right) clicking in the matte area.

  • Lightroom problem!!! Can someone help please???

    Hi All,
Just bought a new computer 2 wks ago & installed Lightroom 3.0.  I've used it only 3 times & when I went to open it to edit today  I get the message "Opening Catalog:Img 2136_cr2.Ircat"  then a window pops up saying that a problem caused the program to stop working.  windows will close the program & notify you if a solution is availble."  Can anyone help me with this.  I'm new to LR .  This is very discouraging ...maybe should just use PScs5 instead.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks kimkl

First, I've not had any similar problems, which I know doesn't help you. But I think this isn't a chronic LR problem. Given that file name, I think you must have, at some point, exported a catalog (File / Export as Catalog on a PC). How that got set as your default catalog I'm not sure.
    Anyway, try this:
Use your computer's search function to find the file in question. Delete it. Delete any other files in the same folder, EXCEPT for any image files, of course.
Now restart LR.  It will come up with a message that says it can't find the catalog, and give you a choice of creating a new one, or selecting an existing one. If you really have only opened LR 3 times, and haven't done much editing, I'd suggest creating a new one. Otherwise, find the correct catalog file and choose it.
Where is the "correct" catalog? It should be in a folder named Lightroom, normally located in the folder where your images are.
Have you backed up your catalog when exiting LR?  If so, you could follow the advice above, but choose one of the backup .lrcat files.
If worse comes to worse, find and delete ALL files that end in .lrcat and other files that are with them, then restart LR, and select the option to create a new catalog. Be sure to select the option, if it's presented, to always use that catalog when starting LR.
This tutorial isn't exactly about this problem, but it will show you where the catalog files are located and how the dialogs I reference are set up:

  • HELP! Need to restore corrupt file/recover deleted file from LIGHTROOM Catalog

    Hi,
I recently edited a wedding I finished and sent to her via WeTransfer.  It showed that she opened the file, so I deleted it off of my computer.  A few days later she said she couldn't open the file because it was corrupt (at this point I couldn't resend because I had deleted it as stated).
She sent it back to me to see if I could try opening -- but every time I try to open in Lightroom it reads:
    Unexpected Error Opening Catalog
The Catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error.
Can ANYONE help me recover this file?? I've also tried to run a Data Recovery software to retrieve it from the trash, but it won't recognize .lrcat files (it brought up all of the .jpegs, photoshop, .tiff files etc -- but no lightroom catalogs.
I REALLY really really don't want to have to re-edit 1000 photos again.
Thanks so much in advance for any advice xo

Just did the scan (mind you I have NO clue what I'm doing), but I dropped it in the SQLite and clicked "expand" and it came up "Idle".
I've attached the two messages I got :
Uh, yeah - it's not an archive and so you don't want to try and expand it as if it was one.
I'm not sure which SQLite app you are using. I think SQLite Spy is Windows-only, but for Mac, maybe:

Other Mac users may have more recommendations.
Once you get a real SQLite app, then open the .lrcat file with it.
