Lightroom catalog together with network

Hello, i have a home network with Lightroom on my base computer. The Lightroom catalog is also stored here. The pictures are on a central server, connected to the network. This works fine. But: i want to use a second computer in another room with Lightroom installed to see the pictures by using the Lightroom catalog. But this is not possible, because the catalog is not allowed to stay on a network server!!! It should be there so that it can be used within a network (therefore i have one!) Does Adobe or anybody has a solution? Thank you very much

To: Bill
thanks for the tip on substitutiary locomotion for LR using a catalog across a network (obscure kid's movie reference there!). I tried it, and it works. On WinXP, that is.
For everyone viewing this, the process is as follows:
You have an LR catalog on another computer in your local network, that you want to access from your computer.
In Window's Explorer on your computer, "map" the network drive (on the other computer) that holds the folder with the catalog, or perhaps even specifically that folder, to a virtual or single-letter drive on your computer, say "x". (And note, the quotes I place around things are there by me to delineate exactly what you type, do not type them in yourself. Only type what is BETWEEN the quotation marks.)
Then access the command-line (DOS level) editor on your computer through the menu system, "Start | Programs | Accesories | Command Prompt".
Type "cd\c:\"
(The above step may not be needed, but I was taught to make my commands from a main-drive location, not a subfolder. Back to the little routine.)
At the prompt, "c:\ ",
type "subst p: x:\"
where "p" stands for any free local drive letter on your computer, and "x" is the local drive letter you mapped the other computer's LR catalog drive or folder to. NOTE THE CLEAR SPACE BETWEEN P: AND X.
Now, open LR on your computer, tell it you want to open a new catalog, and choose the drive-letter that you typed where I use "p" as the drive to find it on, navigate to the folder that has the ".Ircat" folder on it, select it, click on "open".
If you get a message that it cannot access files across a network, simply click on the drop-down box to the right titled "choose" and select the folder-path on the "p" drive and it will now load.
It takes half the time to do this that it does to read it!
I tested this by exporting a small folder as a catalog, copying that folder to another machine, doing the mapping\substitutiary routine above, and accessing it (only from one computer at a time) sequentially from both computers, changing a couple things each time, without saving back to the XMP either manually or automatically.
After doing several changes I then closed the catalog without saving either manually or automatically to xmp. All changes were there immediately on opening the catalog with the other computer. Virtual copies, exposure changes, ratings, labels, keywords ... all saved from both computers to a local drive on the one computer, and readable and useable from the other computer.
You do need to keep from using both at the same time, like duh, but then, we've managed to use file-sharing across our network here for several years with up to 5 people accessing files without both being on the same file at the same time in ANY program, CS, word processing, whatever.
Of course, anything one EVER does it always at your own risk.

  • Lightroom catalog full with no photos deleted photos hard drive

I deleted photos from my hard drive but the catalog I created in Lightoom still has over 50mb in it but the photos are gone.  can I open this file somehow to see if I can extract any previews I created in lightroom before I deleted the photos by accident and can't get them out the trash?

Photos are not stored in Lightroom, so you can't get them from Lightroom.
Your best solutions are, in order:
    Recover photos from trash
Restore photos from backup copies ... you do make backups of your photos, don't you?
Use an "undelete utility" program to undelete the photos
Recover previews from Lightroom ... these will be lower resolution than your original photos, and will be JPGs ... how much lower resolution depends on what options you chose regarding creating previews

  • Shared Lightroom Catalog???

I use Lightroom exclusively for my photos.   I initially used it with my desktop Mac (PowerPC G5) and then started using it also on my laptop (Macbook Pro).  Both computers have all photos on external drives.  There is a separate Lightroom catalog on each computer corresponding to each computer with it's individual external drive.   You can imagine my problem now, I'm sure.  I have, effectively, TWO Lightroom catalogs, each with unique images, but also I've copied some photos over between them.  The problem is growing exponentially.
Here's what I'd LIKE to do.   I'd like to install a shared NAS drive (perhaps an Apple Time Capsule drive) on my central hub in my house (my whole house is wired for Ethernet so that's not a problem), then put all photos on that single hub, thereby using a single Lightroom catalog and with it's images from either computer.  If I have to travel somewhere and take some photos with me, I can deal with that because that it is typically the exception, not the rule.
Has anyone tried to do this?   I don't need to nor expect to hit the shared catalog from both computers at the same time.  I'll be using one or the other, but not both.  But I'd like to bring these two environments together.
I'd love some insight from forum members who've attacked this problem and solved it.  I just don't know if Lightroom will allow the catalog to be on a shared drive, thus accessed by either computer.    If it will, then I imagine the work I need to do is:
    1)     create a large shared NAS drive.
    2)     copy all images to that drive.
    3)     pick one of the two Lightroom catalogs and make that the master and somehow point it to the NAS drive.
    4)     import the remainder of the photos on the NAS drive to Lightroom.
    5)     make sure that both computers reference the Lightroom catalog on the NAS drive.
or maybe not.  Maybe there's a better way.  I'd like your input.
if this won't work, then has anyone successfully merged two Lightroom catalogs together.   One of my catalogs has about 80,000 images, and the other about 35,000 images.   At least 50% of all images are keyworded and I'd really hate to lose my keywords and collections that I've created.
anyway, insight is welcome.  Tell me if I'm nuts too.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dennis

The closest think to this that will work is to put all the images on a large Firewire 800 drive with the LR catalog on the same drive, possibly in another partition. And alternately plug the drive into one machin or the other.
It is Networked drives where one can't put a Catalog, as John says.

  • Lightroom cannot launch with this catalog... network volume or...

I am moving from one computer to another, and I have always kept all my Lightroom files and catalogs on a separate external hard drive.  I unplugged it from my old computer, and plugged it into my new computer and it gives the following message:
"Lightroom cannot launch with this catalog. It is either on a network volume, or on a volume on which Lightroom cannot save changes"
Hum, plug back into my old computer and all is working fine.
Connected by firewire, using all Mac computers.
    Thanks, I need your help!

Ah, I just tried it again in my old computer, and it is coming back as a bad hard drive that needs to be backed up immediately..... darn, thought those LaCie's lasted more than one year.
Thanks, hopefully, I will be back and running soon.

  • Why can't Lightroom open or create a catalog on a network drive?

I just filled up my external drive and spent over $1300 on a Drobo NAS to find out Lightroom can't open or create a catalog on a network drive? EPIC FAIL!!!!
How do I store over 8 TB of catalogs on my NAS and still be able to access them? Do I need to copy the catalogs and pictures from a local drive to a NAS, then copy them back to my local drive if I ever want to use them?
I can't believe this is the case. There really is no reason you shouldn't be able to store a catalog on a network drive. How do I fix or get around this?

Yes, I really have 8 TB of photography. Its from the past 10 years of dozens of worldwide photography jobs. Granted, not all of it is in Lightroom yet, but much of it is. I used Aperture until Apple abandoned all of its professional software development and have been moving to Lightroom for a while now. Aperture is able to use the NAS as a storage drive, no problem and it uses a database as well, so I really don't see why Lightroom can't do it.
I have an 8 TB Drobo connected by Firewire to my iMac and storing photos on it for Lightroom (and Aperture prior to that) and it works fine. But it's filling up and I wanted some archive storage so I didn't have to have Lightroom catalogs and Aperture libraries on it I really don't use on a regular basis. So I got the Drobo FS800 loaded up with 12 TB of space as a network storage server to make sure everything is safely backed up. I am slowly converting my old Aperture libraries to Lightroom, one at a time as well as using Lightroom for everything I have done for about the last two years.
But it is completely impractical to have to store the pictures and catalog on the NAS Drobo, then have to copy it all over to a local drive if I ever want to find a photograph in on a Lightroom catalog. It will takes hours if not a day to do that, just so I can open it. So I may see if I can store the pictures on the NAS Drobo but keep the catalog on the local Drobo. But I hate the idea of not keeping everything together. It something happens and the shots getting separated from the catalog, I have no idea what will happen or if it will be easy to re-connect the media. I also want to keep a backup of the catalog, but I think the built-in catalog vaults will do that.
But again, Apple's Aperture could keep everything together and has not problem pulling it off a NAS, local drive or anywhere. Really hard to imagine why Adobe can't do the same thing, especially since Aperture is overall so obsolete in every other way to Lightroom by now.  Guess I need to try a few things and see if I can make this work. But really not comfortable splitting catalogs up on different drives than the picture files are located.

  • Shared Lightroom catalog with Mac OS X Lion

I keep my Lightroom catalog on my Macbook Pro so I have access to my pictures while travelling. But for editing, I use a desktop PC running Lightroom on Windows 7 on the same catalog. My process for doing this is:
On the Mac, enable SMB sharing.
On Windows, mount the SMB share.
On Windows, use "subst" to map the SMB share to a new drive root.
(This avoids Lightroom's spurious error about not supporting network volumes.)
On Windows, launch Lightroom and open the catalog on the mapped drive.
This worked in Snow Leopard. But after upgrading to Lion, Step 4 gives me an error:
Lightroom cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom 3 catalog" because it is not writable and cannot be opened.
This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog. You may try to correct the problem or you may select a different catalog.
Permissions seem OK: I can edit the catalog and the Previews.lrdata folder in Windows Explorer. And I see no stray .lrcat.lock file that might prevent it from opening the catalog.
The Mac version of Lightroom can open the catalog just fine, so I suspect Lion's new SMB implementation broke this somehow.
Has anyone got a shared Lion -> Windows catalog to work?

OK, I  found a solution. The following page describes how to manually install an SMB implementation (Samba) that actually works. It requires installing Xcode from the App Store, installing MacPorts, and some command-line tinkering to configure Samba:
    http://forums.sonos.com/showthread.php?t=24022
Once you've done that , follow the instructions in this post to create launchd entries that will start Samba at boot time:
    http://forums.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=205428&postcount=48
More details are here if you run into trouble:
    http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=38629
While I can now access my LR library again from Windows, this is just the latest in a series of annoying bugs with OS X Lion. I am not a happy camper— but I'll save that for the Apple forums.

  • Network Lightroom Catalog

Is there anyway to network a Lightroom Catalog as I work with both a desk top and Wacom tablet

That is probably one of the most requested features that we see. But, unfortunately, isn't possible. Some people resolve the problem by putting the catalog in a dropbox folder. Another alternative is to put the images and the catalog on an external drive. I can't give you any details about the dropbox idea because I've never tried it. Using an external hard drive has worked well for me in the past. But Lightroom does not support the catalog being on a network drive.

  • Using iPhoto together with Adobe Lightroom

I use Adobe Lightroom for my image organizing/tagging needs, since it's way more powerful than iPhoto in this area. I would however like to use iPhoto for my daily image browsing, syncing with my iPhone and for ordering prints/books ++. The way I do this now, is I let iPhoto scan the folder where I have my images. After a while when it gets outdated, I delete the database and rescan in iPhoto. Kinda cumbersome...
    So:
    1. Is there a way I can make iPhoto rescan my image folder? Maybe some script or something that can do it for me?
    2. When I rate images in LR, the ratings are stored in the IPTC Urgency field. When I import to iPhoto it doesn't import this as rating. Any way I can convert IPTC Urgency to iPhoto rating?
    3. Would Aperture be a better choice for working together with iPhoto, or would it be just as cumbersome?

    In reverse order:
    3. Would Aperture be a better choice for working together with iPhoto, or would it be just as cumbersome?
It’s a lot better. You can grab your previews from Aperture right into iPhoto using a Media Browser, but given that Aperture will do all those things - books, syncing with iPhone etc - you’ll probably need to do it less. Like iPhoto, Aperture is integrated throughout the OS, in every Open... Dialogue, through Media Browsers to integrate with other apps and so on. The primary advantage of using Aperture is that +at least the two apps know each other exist+.
    2. When I rate images in LR, the ratings are stored in the IPTC Urgency field. When I import to iPhoto it doesn't import this as rating. Any way I can convert IPTC Urgency to iPhoto rating
I don’t think so. There is no real way to move ratings between any apps that I know of. This area of metadata is still in its infancy.
    1. Is there a way I can make iPhoto rescan my image folder? Maybe some script or something that can do it for me?
No. However there are apps out there that can watch that folder for you and execute specific actions on events occurring. You may be able to cook up an Automator action or Folder Action script that will import to iPhoto when a file is added to the Folder. Or use an app like Hazel to do it for you.
Update: I’m not sure what this Lightroom plug-in brings to the party, but it may help.

  • LR3 - Merging Individual Lightroom Catalogs into a "Master" Catalog | The Complete Picture with Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV

In this Episode of The Complete Picture Julieanne demonstrates how to combine individual Lightroom catalogs into a single, “Master” Lightroom catalog to simplify a photographers workflow and enable multi-shoot searching.

What if I'm one of those disorganized folks who made the mistake of having the same images in multiple catalogs, some with and some without edits? How would I fix that mess?

  • Is the catalog from Lightroom 5 compatible with Lightroom 6? Also, can Lightroom CC 2015 and Lightroom 6 use the same catalog?

I am a current Lightroom 5.7 user - I have purchased and installed Lightroom 6, but have not launched the program yet - will LR 6 make changes to my LR 5 catalog, such that it cannot be used in LR5?
Also, can LR6 and LR CC 2015 share the same catalog?

Lightroom 6 will require an updated database are catalog format. When you first start Lightroom 6 after you have installed it, it will prompt you to upgrade your catalog. This will create a new copy of your catalog in the new format, leaving your Lightroom 5 catalog intact and usable if you still have Lightroom 5 installed. Lightroom 6 and Lightroom CC can use the same catalog. But they cannot share the same catalog because that catalog must be installed locally on both computers. The Lightroom catalog cannot be placed on a network drive.

  • How to reconcile 2 lightroom catalogs in separate locations along with images and metadata?

I split my time between two locations where I need access to all of my images and lightroom catalog...  I've been trying to keep everything in sync by transporting new images on hard drives, exporting new updates to a "migration" catalog and then importing that along with the images when I travel back to the other location.  This works as long a I don't get lazy, or in a hurry...  which I have, of course and now I need to get everything back in order--as best as can be expected.
What would be the best way to do this?  I need to migrate changes in both directions...  If it was just location A to B, or B to A, then that's not much of a problem.  unfortunately, i need to reconcile changes from A to B and B to A...
I learned my lesson, but I still need to resolve this mess.
    Any tips appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Combine Lightroom catalogs with the same name.

Newbie, be easy on me.  This will probably end up being a dumb question, but here goes anyway.   I have 2 lightroom catalogs named (Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat)  What is the easiest way to combine those 2 into 1 catalog (Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat).  Thank you in advance!
    Scott

    Hi Scott
I'd open one of the libraries, and rename it "catalogue2" and then open the other one and import the "catalogue2" into the 1st one
alternatively, find where one of the catalogues is and rename is thru explorer or finder, and open that one and then import the other catalogue.
All the import is in File Import
    import from catalogue,
    from chip from disk etc
    Hope that helps
    Cheers

  • Technical question:  Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??

    Technical question:
Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??
Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers.  I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

  • Can I move the Lightroom Catalog from one location to another?

Lightroom by default, places the Lightroom Catalog in the Pictures folder on my PC. My image library though, is located on an external hard drive. I've read that it is better to have the Catalog at the same location to avoid disconnected images, which sounds reasonable. Is it feasable to move the Catalog over to the same drive as my image library, or will that cause a problem? In other words would I need to start over again and create a new Catalog on the external drive? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I've learnt to my cost that the obvious solution isn't necessary the correct one.

For better performance it is preferable to have the catalog located on an internal hard drive. By default the catalog and the preview files have to be located in the same folder since there is continual read/write taking place while working in Lightroom. Lightroom does not make any changes to the original files so its fine for them to be located on another hard drive internal or external. Lightroom loves lots of hard disk space to operate so if your catalog is on an internal drive make sure it not starved for disk space.
However its ok for your catalog/previews files to reside on an external HDD with your original photo files.
Your photo files can reside on a HDD conected to a network but your catalog and preview files cannot be located on a network.
e.g I have my catalog / previews on the main HDD with my operating system with over 50% free disk space. My Photo files are on a secondary internal HDD with over 75% free disk space. I back up to external HDD.

  • Lightroom Catalog on USB Thumb Drive

I am currently using Lightroom 1.3.1 on a Windows XP desktop and a Windows Vista Premium laptop. I've been trying to figure out how to keep all of my actual pictures in 1 place, but be able to move between computers to do my work- keywords, ratings, basic development, etc. In all of my reading of this and other forums, it seems that this is a difficult thing to do. The external drives that I use are not USB-powered, so moving the drive from one computer to the other is not a reasonable alternative. So, here is what I've come up with, can someone please tell me if this works:
    1) All photo files- RAW, JPG, DNG, etc- in a folder on an external disk that I share over my network between the 2 computers
    2) Export full catalog file to a thumb drive
    3) Permanently assign that thumb drive the same letter on both computers
    4) Direct both copies of LR to that drive and catalog
    5) Synchronize catalog each time I start LR on either computer with the thumb drive installed
Has anyone tried this? Am I missing something? I figure that by directing both computers to the same drive folder through the network, but keep the catalog local, all of my changes should stay up to date with minimal trouble, i.e. minimal exports and imports.
    Any input?
    Thanks in advance.
    Adam
PS- What is a reasonable size thumb drive to give myself room to grow? I'm dealing with about 8000 pictures now, all from personal use, nothing professional.

    Adam.
That is exactly how most people do it, for now... a PocketDrive for the catalog, and a the originals on the network. Plug the Pocketdrive into the computer, set the database to backup every time it is opened and back it up whenever you switch computers, and 'find' the originals if necessary due to drive mapping differences.
And don't forget the great LRViewer program as an adjunct. It allows you to read the catalog on a PC or Mac without LR installed. It also allows you to extract the previews as JPEGs, which means that if you have rendered 1:1 previews you can get a pretty decent quality image from your catalog even if you do not have access to the originals.
I say "for now" in my first sentence because hopefully Adobe will have redesigned it's catalog sufficiently in V2 that it can be hosted on the network directly. Remember that it is NOT a multi-user issue that keeps the catalog from being network available (that is easily resolved via many file locking mechanisms), but the performance of the network, and the high level of database interactivity, that keeps the catalog from being network hosted. The issues of external database sync, database locking, etc are well understood, and in this case the "it's only Version 1" excuse is actually valid, and hopefully V2 will add real functionality of this type instead of bug fixes as we have seen so far.
