Lightroom Catalogue .lrcat and previews on RAM DISK?

Hello,
I copied the lightroom catalaogue and the preview files to a ram disk. Lightroom refuses to open the catalogue. Error message states, that Lightroom couldn't write on that disk. Nevertheless, LR was able to store the raw cache files on that disk (working with a catalogue stored on a real HDD).
Can anybody help?
Thanks

  • Lightroom 5 Catalogs and Previews Backup

I am backing up catalogs to an external HD.
Why do some LR 5 catalog backups contain the "...Previews.lrdata" folder and some do not?

When you backup the catalog on exit, only the lrcat database file is backed up, not the previews.lrdata folder. If, however, you subsequently open that backup catalog for some reason, Lightroom will immediately create the associated previews folder and would gradually start building previews. Thus the logical assumption from your question is that the backup catalogs which have an associated previews folder have all been opened in Lightroom at some point. You can safely delete those previews folders if you wish.

  • Moving Lightroom Database.lrcat  to a diferent location

I think I have looked everywhere to find an answer to my problem I created too many libraries and it is very difficult to find my images. Now that I understand how LR works I understand the big mistake I made is there a way to export Lightroom Database.lrcat and create a new library without loosing all the info. that I have created?
I understand also that one should not have more than 10 thousand images per library is this correct? So I would have to create very specific libraries (ej: personal, architectural, portraits etc.)

    Ricardo-
I think the answer is yes, but I'd like to be clearer on what your questions are first.
If you are thinking of combining several Libraries, perhaps on a new external drive, you can do so with no loss of anything.
But do outline a bit more what your situation is.

  • Lightroom and solid state hard disks

I'm looking to speed up Lightroom as much as possible within reason (version 3 on a Mac) and one possibility that occurred to me is to put Lightroom and it's catalog on a somewhat smaller 80-120 GB (and therefore less expensive) solid state hard disk. I'm wondering if Lightroom interacts with the system enough that I wouldn't gain much? I would think that I would get a pretty good speed bump...

    Pete Marshall says:
SSD's are great for the OS and apps. They may not be so good for the catalog itself as write speeds are not good. If I was you I would get a small SSD to use as the boot drive and put the catalog and files on seprate fast traditional hard drives.
Write and read speed of currently available SSDs blow away hard disk drives in any configuration. Look here:
    http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/high_end_drives.html
SSDs are more expensive per GB than HDDs, but you don't need a large 1TB+ drive to increase system performance! I work with Intel who is one of the top SSD manufacturers and R&D companies. Intel is working with Micron on joint program to reduce cost of SSDs. Intel just announced their new SSD 510 series:
    Intel SSD 510 Specification
    SATA 6Gb/s Sustained Bandwidth Performance
    (Iometer* Queue Depth 32)
    — 250 GB:
Sequential Read: Up to 500 MB/s
Sequential Write: Up to 315 MB/s
    — 120 GB:
Sequential Read: Up to 450 MB/s
Sequential Write: Up to 210 MB/s
Compared to a high performance HDD:
    WD Caviar Black
    Samsung HD103UJ
    HDTach
    Burst (MB/s)
    232.6
    204.5
    Random Access (ms)
    12.1
    13.7
    Average Read (MB/s)
    89.5
    96.8
    Average Write (MB/s)
    79.9
    84.4
I have no experience running LR on SSD, but putting your LR catalog, RAW cache, and preview files on an SSD should provide a real performance boost.

Hi, I am having a little trouble with exporting images to another drive and Catalogue and need some help if anyone can give me some advice
I am currently using Lightroom 5.6 and operating on a Mac with OSX Ver 10.9.5.
I am receiving an error problem when doing the following -
I am exporting selected photos from a particular Catalogue saved on Drive 1 to a folder created on another Drive where a Lightroom Catalogue has been created. In this Catalogue I have arranged for the images once exported to be moved to a different folder - I used the Auto Import process under the File dialogue box.
When processing the Export I receive an error message for each of the images being exported indicating the following -
    Heading Import Results
Some import operations were not performed
Could not move a file to requested location. (1)
then a description of the image with file name
    Box Save As                                  Box  OK
If I click the OK button to each image I can then go to the other Catalogue and all images are then transferred to the file as required.
To click the OK button each time is time consuming, possibly I have missed an action or maybe you can advise an alternative method to save the time in actioning this process.
Thanks if you can can help out.

Thank You, but this is a gong show. Why is something that is so important to us all so very, very difficult to do?

You don't need to have Lightroom 3 and 4 installed on your computer to install Lightroom 5.  Just install Lightroom 5 and input your serial number for 3 in the previous version box and your serial number for 5 in the upgrade box.

  • AE CS4, Kona 3 and Half Res RAM Preview.

    Hi,
I am having a very annoying problem trying to RAM preview in AE CS4  at half res/50% and below.
    My system configuration is
    MacPro 2008, 16GB RAM, 8800GT.
I am running AE 9.02 on 10.5.7 and am not using the AJA CS4  utilities as they create some problems on my workstation,  AJA Kona3  driver v7.1
I am outputting and HD SDI signal to HD SDI monitor, with the AE  preference video preview selected on AJAKona 1080i25 RGBA. (Full HD comp  of course) While at Full/100% everything is working in Realtime and I  have my full HD preview running on my monitor, as soon as I choose to  preview in Half Res and 50% size, everything runs at 6-8 fps.  IT IS  IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK LIKE THIS! and is very frustrating.
In a comp which is standard PAL all works fine in Full/Half/Quarter  etc...
My AJA control panel output1 is set to 1080i and the secondary  output to 625i and is connected to an SD monitor in order to have both  HD and SD monitoring but this should not be a problem....
I am desperately looking for a solution for that and any help will  be appreciated.
ThanX in advance and happy holiday season to all.
    jm.

Cool, I tried that as well and it worked.
Then I remembered that I had had to stretch things out originally because when I imported them they played at double speed. So I bumped my preview playback from 29.97fps to 15fps and un-stretched them. Then I created the preview and the preview played right, and also the RAM save copy played right. So that was it. I just had to change my preview speed and render speed to 15fps, which is apparently the speed of the video from my input device.
    Thanks a million!

  • Virtual copies are not synchronized in a second Lightroom catalogue although metadata are written in XMP and synchronization with metadata was selected

    Dear community,
I operate one Mac with Lightroom 5.7 that is configured to store all metadata in xmp files. The Lightroom catalogue is stored locally on the Mac and only contains references to the images and their xmp files that are stored on a network device. There is another Mac with the same configuration having a separate local Lightroom catalogue and access to the same images on the network device.
At a starting point, both Lightroom catalogues are identical - they refer to the same images on the network device and contain the same metadata.
When I update image properties on the first Mac, these changes are reflected in the xmp file. After using the option "synchronize" with activated "metadata synchronization" on the second Mac, the modified image properties are visible on the second Mac. This is fine.
However, when I create a virtual copy on the first Mac, I realize that the corresponding xmp file gets updated. However, even after synchronization, the virtual copy is not visible on the second Mac. I may modify image properties of the original image and get these modifications replicated to the second Mac, but the virtual copies remain on the first Mac.
What needs to be done that also virtual copies get synchronized?
Thank you very mich for your support.
    Best regards,
    Peter

I do not doubt that File Export / File Import will work to transfer the virtual copies.
My question was related to the fact whether the imported folder should not previously exist on the second Mac.
    Consider the following situation:
    time = 0:
first Mac: folder A is in a first status
second Mac: folder A is in a first status
    time = 1:
first Mac: folder A is in a second status, export folder A in second status
second Mac: folder A is in a first status, import folder A in second status
My question is: What happens with these two folder A on the second Mac? Does folder A in the Lightroom catalogue of the second Mac gets overwritten? Do I receive an error message because folder A is already present in the Lightroom catalogue?
I understand your answer that everything will be fine on the second Mac if there is no folder A at all at the second Mac while I import the new folder A. Under this assumption, I can import folder A and it will show the second status. Clearly.
My question is only related to the fact that there is already a folder A on the second Mac, with the same images, but with different metadata and/or virtual copies.

  • Lightroom 3 and previews

    Hi Everyone,
I'm struggling with some issues regarding previews in lightroom.
    1. I've upgraded my catalog from lightroom 2 to 3 without re-rendering the previews. According to Jeff Schewe in the Luminous Landscape lightroom 3 tutorial there would be an advantage to disregard all your old previews and let lightroom 3 re-render everything. Could someone elaborate why this is the case and how the difference will be noticeable? He mentions something about a new rendering technique and use of color space.
    2. I've tested the re-rendering by exporting my entire catalog without previews. Then re-importing it in a new, empty catalog and selecting library -> previews -> render 1:1 previews. What I've noticed is that the standard preview size in the catalog settings influences the total file size the catalog will have on the hard drive. Also when only selecting render 1:1 previews. The lightroom manual says the following about previews:
Lightroom renders three types of previews: thumbnails, screen resolution images, and 1:1 previews. 1:1 previews
have the same pixel dimensions as the original photos.
Does lightroom then render out all three of these previews when selecting render 1:1 previews?
    3. To determine what setting to choose for the standard preview size and quality in the catalog settings I need to know what the standard preview is used for. Is it what you see when selecting fit in loupe mode?
    4. After re-rendering all the 1:1 previews and then choosing to export a certain folder as a catalog lightroom completes the procedure but gives me the warning that it couldn't find certain photo previews. It seems these are the pictures that havn't yet been viewed in loupe mode by me. This contradicts the assumption I made earlier that lightroom would render out all three previews when choosing render 1:1. What exactly is lightroom missing here and what does it render out in loupe mode that it doesn't do when rendering 1:1's?
Hope this is not too confusing and thanks already for the help.
    Freddy.

Lightroom 2 used different color spaces for different preview levels: sRGB for low, Adobe RGB for medium an ProPhoto for high quality and 1:1 previews. Lightroom 3 uses Adobe RGB all the time. Plus, LR2 never applied sharpening and NR to standard previews (only to 1:1), LR3 does sometimes.
Also, the preview cache contains some databases, apart from the preview files themselves. These are a sort of directory, or index for the entire cache. They might be corrupted or malformed. Rebuilding them is a good thing sometimes.
I've tested the re-rendering by exporting my entire catalog without previews. Then re-importing it in a new, empty catalog
You might simply copy the catalog. Same result, but faster.
What I've noticed is that the standard preview size in the catalog settings influences the total file size the catalog will have on the hard drive. ... Does lightroom then render out all three of these previews when selecting render 1:1 previews?
Lightroom often builds several levels of previews. Some large images may have not two (standard and 1:1), but 6-7 levels.
To determine what setting to choose for the standard preview size and quality in the catalog settings I need to know what the standard preview is used for. Is it what you see when selecting fit in loupe mode?
    Yes.
You must select a size that is egual or larger than you screen width in pixels.
What exactly is lightroom missing here and what does it render out in loupe mode that it doesn't do when rendering 1:1's?
I'm afraid, Lightroom sometimes silently fails to render the requested previews. That's why they are "missing".
I have experienced myself and read many times on the forum, about cases when re-running "Build Previews" just after a previous run has finished, still finds missing previews and builds again. That means that the previous run crashed silently, despite lack of any error messages.

  • How do I reinstall Lightroom and safely import library and preview data from an older computer?

Since buying a new MacBook Pro back in February 2014, I have had non-stop issues using Lightroom.  This is particularly frustrating considering I bought a new laptop specifically to improve my experience with Lightroom.  The experience thus far has been anything but.  The program freezes every time I try and 'right click' on an item, which means I have no way of reconnecting files or folders that are on external hard drives.  It also crashes regularly when I try and open the program.  I believe this may have something to do with how I moved files over from one computer to another.  I have a growing suspicion that my libraries are corrupt.
It's now been 6 months, and I've uploaded quite a few new folders since then.  However, I am ready to give all the last 6 months work away and start with a 2013 backup to ensure Lightroom runs smoothly.  I've moved all current library information onto an external hard drive, and deleted the folder from my laptop.  I've also tried to delete and reinstall Lightroom, but the program immediately crashes when I try to start it up again.
All this is to say I need some serious help getting Lightroom back up and running on my laptop, pulling in old data from my other laptop properly and bringing Lightroom back up to life on my new laptop.  Any assistance or hand holding would be immeasurably appreciated.

It should work.  Make sure you are installing the same version.  If you continue to have a problem try contacting Adobe Support thru chat:

  • How to organise Lightroom catalogue, in such a way that the catalogue can be used on another comput

how to organise(and save) Lightroom catalogue, in such a way that the catalogue can be used on another computer? / so you can see what has been edited etc. /

Yes, but external disks will always be slower than internal drives.
Look into file synchronization software. As long as folder structure is identical inside the two master folders, and drive letters the same, you can keep the two machines fully synchronized very easily, going both ways. The one I use cost about $50 or so.
Use a large capacity 2,5" portable (goes in your pocket) for transport. You need the entire master folder there, but once set up only new or modified files are copied.
The Lightroom catalog can be synchronized with the rest, so that you are working with the same catalog on both machines. This overwrites the catalog with a new copy every time, so a regular backup schedule in addition is a must. OTOH you will have three copies of every file, one always off-site. That's sound backup practice.
Tip: exclude the Lr Previews folder from the synchronization. They are written to disk in such a way that they take an insanely long time to copy. New previews will be built on the receiving machine.

  • Differences between lrcat and lrdb files with new OS and LR 2?

So I just refurbished my machine by wipping my drives that contain the
operating system (Win XP Pro) and other program files. I did regular backups
of all including the various settings for lightroom and everything else I
could find outside of the backup that LR would do on it's own. Previously,
before this refurbishment, I was using LR 1.4 and just did install LR 2.1. I
hadn't upgraded any of my LR databases as I created a temporary picture
database on another drive just to test drive 2.1. So essentially, I had both
LR 1.4 and LR 2.1 install simutaniously. Didn't have any issues either, but
again, just checking out 2.1 prior to abandoning 1.4. Anyhow, in my new
setup I was just going to go with LR 2.1. Realizing that my catalog files
(.lrcat) would prompt to be updated, I am thinking I am fine. But since
Adobe's LR likes to place files all over the place from 'program files' to
'application data' to 'my pictures', I ended up with what "seems" to be some
duplicates and/or am a bit confused as I am not sure what goes where. I
mean, I think I have it all down as I backed up some items such as the lrdb
files and then brought in some stuff I had backed up before this
refurbishment. All seems fine, but I would rather aviod issues in the
future. So could someone tell me what goes where and their file name(s) and
extensions? And when doing this, what is the difference between the lrcat
and the lrdb files? Seems LR 2.1 doesn't contain or create lrdb files. And
lastly, where are my preview files? When I set the lrcat files to point to
my old setup/stuff, the pictures just take a very quick moment before they
are clear and whatnot. Is it best just to recreate? And lastly, is there a
way for me to test and check to make sure I moved the right things into the
right places and that all is working as it should with the proper files? As
an example, all the folders/files that were here "C:\Documents and
    Settings\Mark G\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom" I just copied and wrote
over from my backup prior to the refurbishment and things such as my custom
and downloaded web galleries look fine. Any other thoughts? Sorry for the
long read and thanks for any and all help/input you all can provide.

    >And when doing this, what is the difference between the lrcat
    >and the lrdb files?
In versions up to and including V1.0, Lightroom catalog files were .lrdb (for Lightroom database). So, if you have already been working with V1.4 you can get rid of any .lrdb files that you may still have.
As regards file locations you could do searches for the following file types:
    .lrcat (catalogues and backed-up catalogues)
    .lrtemplate (templates and presets)
    .agprefs (your preferences file)
previews.ldata (in same folder and with same name as your catalogs)
Lightroom allows you to choose where your catalogs (and associated previews) are stored. It also allows you to specify where Lightroom backs up your catalogs.
Templates and presets are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom

  • Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?

Q: Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?
    FAQ revised 25 April 2009
Ans: Prior to version 1.3 Lightroom did not support 1:1 preview rendering during import, the actual options for  Initial Previews being:  Embedded or  Standard. However, more recent versions allow four types of previews to be rendered during import (i.e.  Minimal, Embedded & Sidecar, Standard, and  1:1). It's also worth noting the following on Lightroom import behaviour:
    1.  Minimal (Lightroom default) or Embedded & Sidecar is by far the quickest method for getting your photos into the Lightroom catalog. However, the lack of Standard, which is the minimum that Lightroom can actually work with, means that the application will render standard-sized on demand (i.e. as thumbs/photos become visible within the photo Content area). Asking Lightroom to undertake this task at the same time as you're trying to use the application will result in sub optimal performance.
    2. Importing your photos with the  Standard preview selected within the Import dialog will take longer than 1 above, but on completion Lightroom will already have previews that match the minimum requirement for working in the Library. Assuming that you won't be looking at every image at 100% (i.e 1:1) then this preview size will allow you to quickly review, rate, label, even make quick colour/tone adjustments, etc the photos within the Library module. If you need to see a photo at 100% then Lightroom will render that preview on demand (while it's being rendered you'll see the "Rendering Preview" overlay appear at bottom of preview).  Note that when using a 23" or larger monitor it to is best to set the Standard sized previews so that they are rendered at 2048 pixels
    3. Importing your photos with the  1:1 preview size selected will result in Lightroom taking even longer to complete the import process than would have been the case if standard-sized had been chosen. 1:1 previews also take up significantly more disk space than standard-sized.
If you're not going to be working on the photos immediately after import but do need to get them into Lightroom as quickly as possible, then the best option would be to choose import option 1. Once the photos have been imported choose either  Render Standard-sized Previews or  Render 1:1 previews from Library module Library>Previews menu.

When I search these forums for "CFCopyFormattingDescription", I find a bunch of crash reports posted that look almost exactly the same as mine.  It appears there's a bug in iPhoto, perhaps when reading metadata from the JPG file (readRawTiffPropsFromPath).
Interestingly, the Preview app can open and display the file just fine.  I even opened the inspector and it showed all of the TIFF and exif metadata just fine, no crash.  The file also opens just fine on Windows.
Now how do we get the attention of the iPhoto development team so I can send them the photos, have them reproduce the crash, and fix it?
