Lightroom catalogue parent folder permissions issue

Hi guys,
Im having an issue with not only my 2011 Macbook Pro that crashed thanks to the infamous faulty Radeon graphics card but also with the task of opening my backed-up Lightroom catalogue from Time machine on a new Mac.
I have 8 years of edits in this folder that I can no longer access on a different machine. Any help with this would be hugely appreciated.
The message I get reads as follows,
The Lightroom catalog cannot be used because the parent folder “/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Macintosh/2014-09-25-102018/Macintosh HD/Users/jules/Documents/Backups/2014-09-19 1324” does not allow files to be created within it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Jules

  • Help with folder permissions issue

Hello, I'm new to BI and I'm having issues with folder permissions.
Here is what we are trying to do:
We have two folders, lets say Folder A and Folder B. We have two application roles, Role1 and Role2.
Folder A should have full control for Role1, Folder B should not be visible for Role2. Folder B should have full control to Role2, Folder A should not be visible for Role1.
Under permissions for those two folders we have set it up accordingly. For Folder A, Role 1 has "Full Control", Role 2 has "No Access". Folder B, Role 2 has "Full Control", Role 1 has "No Access".
Everything works fine if a user has one or the other role.
But when a user has both the roles, they need to see both the folder but only see 1.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help in advance.

if it's any consolation, seems to happen in the mac version, too. i use manually get album artwork on some new files imported from a CD - i renamed it exactly the same way it is in the itunes store, which previously always worked without fail. now, nothing. just says the requested resource can't be found. so, likely it's a bug.

  • Downloads, Photo, Movie folder permissions issue

I just got my 15" macbook pro from the repair shop, the apple store wiped and did a fresh install of 10.8.2.
I began bringing the time machine backup to the folders, I did the Downloads folder, the Movies folder, the Music folder, the Pictures folder.
Once it was finished, I could not enter the folders that were placed on my macbook pro. The system states that I do not have permission to view the folder. I really needed the documents at the time so I went ahead and created new folders of each, adding a "TM" to the end and restored the documents, now my macbook pro is full, it has 1/2 terabyte of storage and has 50gb available. Of course, I went ahead and deleted the folders I do not require for today but will require next week.
I can see that I obviously did the time machine incorrectly on 10.8.2 as previous versions restored perfectly.
I rebooted, opened disk utility and verified disk and permissions, both stated the same thing, OK. I did a disk repair, returned OK.
I don't know what else to do, besides erasing and installing 10.8.2 again. I have not backed up this version because I do not want all of these hundreds of gigabyte space available for selection from the time machine in the future.
    What do I do?
    Thank you in advance.

Are you using the same user name with same password as you were on the old drive?
In any event Change the Permissions on those folders. Right click, Get Info, click Lock icon, type in password, Add your current username to the list and set it as Read & Write, lock the icon.

  • Windows server 2008 R2 File& Folder Permissions; Ghost Permissions From "Parent Object" Assigned to Folder Owner

Windows 2008 R2 file server: Subfolders of a particular folder have an account that has Full Control permission that are listed as inherited. That account has no permissions in the parent folder. It was, however the account that was used to copy the folders
and their contents in there from another source and was the owner of the folder.
In Advanced Permissions, it shows them as inherited from "Parent Object" as opposed to the folder name of the parent folder (there are some of these.) (The parent folder of the place where the problem occurs does not inherit from _its_ parent)
I removed it as owner and yet the permissions remained. (as displayed either through the GUI or with ICACLS.)
If I make _any_ edit in Advanced Permissions, the 'ghost' permissions then go away (e.g. add my account with full control - I'm domain admin, so have that anyway) This step seems like it should be unnecessary, but it is required in this situation.
I've done this to 5 of about 20 subfolders and it is consistent. Folders which did not have the 'problem account' as their owner did not exhibit this characteristic.
This affects the files within the subfolders as well.
Oddly, adding an owner to a folder has the same effect and required the same edit before the permissions are seen. This was tested on a different drive on the same server.
Is this an anomaly, a bug, or expected performance?

    Hi,
Do you mean that there is an account that has Full Control permission that are listed as inherited but it doesn’t appear in the parent NFS permissions? If so, please try to uncheck the "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" checkbox,
    clicking Apply.
There is a similar thread, please go through it to help troubleshoot this issue:

  • File Sharing - inherit permissions of parent folder

First off, let me say that I'm a UNIX guy so I like the command line. The server admin tool is pretty unfamiliar territory for me..
A friend of mine runs a graphics design firm and he needed a server. I set him up with an Xserve and let me say that it is blazing fast. I am having a problem though..
There are currently two computers on the network, we'll call them users Mark and Jim. If Jim creates a file on the share, then Mark can't modify it and vise versa. This is obviously a permissions issue. Seen it a million times. Now...
the permissions that are carrying over from the workstations are rw-r--r--. I'd like everyone to be able to modify these files on the share.
The share is set up as permission 755 and if a new file/folder is created, I'd like it to pick up these permissions.
I'm confused by this AFS/ACL/ACE vs. POSIX thing. Can someone help me out here?
I had a UNIX server running NFS previously and never saw this problem.

    Hi
For a good explanation and understanding of how ACLs work:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1535247
The above is for 10.4 Server. For 10.5 Server:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1234220&tstart=0
    If you look here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1233
You'll notice a lot of discussions regarding file sharing (the forum itself) and permissions (ACLs, POSIX) problems in particular. These current threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1251475&tstart=15
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1428118&tstart=15
may provide more information. There is also some discussion regarding the SMB service itself. In 10.5 it appears to be not fully functioning as it should. It seems access for clients is achievable only if Guest Access is enabled which kind of defeats the whole notion of controlling access. Apple may be addressing these issues in a forthcoming update? You could perhaps research this further? There are numerous online resources available that may be useful:

  • Groups missing inherited permissions from parent folder on SMB share on save

If i save a file on a lion share where i have access RW over group permissions, the groups missing inherited permissions on SMB share on save.
    File permissions before save:
    user: read/write
    group: read/write
    other: no access
    File permissions after save:
user2: read/write (it changed to the actual users who has permission on the Group)
    group: no access !!! Why??
    other: no access
On Mac OS X 10.6 i was able to force the group permission, from the parent folder.
Everytime i must manualy propagate from the parent folder to fix this !
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem. What exactly do you mean by add ACL. I have tried to change the permissions to add the inheritance via ACL, with no joy - so any help you can give would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Permissions issue locks me out of my desktop folder

    Hi All.
I have a worrying dilema that I am hoping someone can advise me on.
    The symptoms are:
*1. A blank desktop after start-up (files, folders and volumes are not loading)*
*2. It takes an extremely long time for the "Devices", "Shared", and "Places" lists to populate in the open-dialogue sidebar.*
*3. Saving files from applications takes an unusually long time.*
*4. All other apps and non-Finder related activities appear unaffected.*
*5. If I navigate directly to the "Desktop" folder in my user folder in the Finder, it appears as an alias. I double click on it and a window appears which says it is trying to resolve the alias, and soon after I get this permissions error:*
*"The folder “Desktop” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."*
So overall this appears to be a permissions issue impacting my desktop directory. A similar thing happened six months ago. On that occasion I tried repairing permissions which didn't help and I ended up creating a new user account and restoring from Time Machine.
I'd prefer not to have to do that again. More so, I'd like to actually fix the root cause this time.
My appreciation in advance for any advise that at least makes my desktop reappear.
    Best,
    Wade.

I haven't watched that video, but if you move photos in your operating system ... Lightroom does NOT automatically find these photos. Finding photos that have been moved is NOT a feature of Lightroom. So, there is no fix for this.
You would have to tell Lightroom where the photos are now located, as explained in the link from 99jon
If you must move photos, move them inside of Lightroom, not in your operating system, or better yet — don't move them, and use Lightroom tools such as keywords and other metadata to achieve organization.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

  • Share permissions issue - users reporting files readonly

I have setup a share and the users need to have access to read, modify, write, delete on the files/folders in the new share. The users. For this:
    1. I added the user AD group to the Share Permissions and set 'Change' for the permissions. I noticed that there was already a group called Everyone here and had 'READ' permissions. I did not make any changes to this Everyone group.
    2. I added the user AD group to the NTFS Permissions and set 'Modify, Read&Execute, Read, Write' permissions.
It seems the users are seeing the files as 'read only'. They can view and open, but are not able to edit the file. What might be the issue?

I have added share and NTFS permissions the same as yours on a shared folder and I can eide files within the shared folder. Please check the NTFS permissions of the files in the shared folder to see it the NTFS permissions are inherited to the chiled files

  • Newly Created Sub-Directories Don't Have Parent Directory Permissions

Hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this.
    Background:
Running 10.4.11 as a file server on a PPC G5 in a small creative office. We have a handful of users accessing via AFP. No other services are running.
I'm using Workgroup Manager as admin tool.
Top level directory has permissions set to Read & Write for Owner, Group & Everyone.
    Issue:
When an authenticated user creates a new directory on the server, the new directory does not honor the parent directory permissions for all three user tiers.
Rather, in getting info, the owner is momentarily set to the user who created the directory with read & write, then switches to (unknown) with r&w. The group is momentarily correct and then switches to (unknown) despite the creating user being part of a specific group, and has Read only permissions.
    Everyone has Read only permissions.
If a user attempts to fix permissions on a directory they just created, they are unable to do so.
So, throughout the course of the day, I am bombarded with "I don't have permissions...", wherein, i use remote access to hit Workgroup Manager and do a global propagation down of the parent directories permissions to allow access. Until someone else makes a directory
This can't possibly be right. Newly created directories should be set to the parent directory permissions, if i'm not mistaken.
    Anyone? Any insight?
    Michael B.

oh yes.. you are right... its accessible in
    http:://rishtey.local/default_1.html
successfully... thanks for that... first of all
now issue is: when i access http://rishtey.local/test.php which contains just a tag to display php info only...
instead of rendering this php file, it just save the file in the download folder.
what could be the issue with it?

  • Robocopy on Windows Server 2008 SP2 does not copy folder permissions

When using Robocopy to copy folders and files from one local hard disk to another, using /COPYALL /E /TEE options, the target folder does not contain the source folder's ACL. I've tried other options such as: /COPY:DATSOU or /SECFIX, it made no difference.
Test scenario: Create a folder on C:, Test1. Add to Test1's permissions a local group with Read, e.g. Backup Operators. The ACL list should have permissions inherited from C:\ plus Backup Operators that's not inherited. Use Robocopy to copy Test1 to C:\Test2, check the ACL on Test2. Backup Operators is missing.
It looks like Robocopy cannot override the target folder's permissions inheritance, the folder  retains the parent folder's ACL.
I've also disabled User Access Control in troubleshooting this problem.
To add to this issue, there's a workaround can be used to ensure the target folder's ACL is the same as the source folder's ACL. It's a two step process.
    1) Use XCOPY source_folder target_folder /I /E /X /T  -  This lays down the directory structure including the ACLs
    2) Use ROBOCOPY source_folder target_folder /COPYALL /SECFIX /E  - This will copy over the directories and files, enforcing the files to receive the parent folder's ACL. The target_folder's ACL remain intact, unaltered from XCOPY command.
The end result: the target_folder ACL is identical to the source_folder ACL, the files copied to the target_folder will inherit ACL from their parent folder. Both source and target folders and files ACLs are identical.
ROBOCOPY should do both steps, but doesn't. I've tested this scenario on bare-bones Windows Server 2008, physical and virtual machines.
    Darryl Miller

    To Wendy23,
Just for clarity, the Windows Server 2008 OS that I ran ROBOCOPY and XCOPY on was the non-R2 version. Microsoft might have fixed this issue in R2.
You'll probably need to logon as local Administrator or use an account belonging to the local Administrators group.
Also, open the Command Prompt using "Run as Administrator" (right-click on Command Prompt), then run the XCOPY and ROBOCOPY commands from within this prompt.
To answer G.Write, the storage is local hard disks.
Thanks, was a long time ago, I was having a problem with robocopy not copying permissions on a SAN, and was wondering if the SAN was the problem, but your method worked fine for me, thanks.

  • Complex file permissions issues

I'm working on trying to setup file permissions on a share for a client and have been unable to figure out a way to do what they have asked for. They have a predefined structure of directories inside each client directory and have shared the parent folder
that holds all the individual client directories. In each client directory it has the same structure as the other clients' and is supposed to have varying permissions regarding files and folders throughout, however, the initial structure of directories should
never be allowed to be changed by the client accounts in the group granted permission to their structure.
Throughout the structure those in that client group in AD should have read and execute everywhere, which is easy to set and I've had no issues with. In some of the subdirectories they should have modify/delete for it's contents, sometimes restricting this
to just files vs files and directories. If the directory that should allow that is not followed by any further directories defined by the structure I can configure that as well. It's when a directory is supposed to allow the client modify/delete on it's subdirectories
and files BUT it has a child that the client should NOT have modify/delete on because it's part of the pre-defined structure that I run into a problem.
    Example folder structure:
    Client_Name -> Data -> DataSub
They have read, transverse, list, execute on Client_Name and can't change the Data directory itself. Then they need to be able to create, modify and delete files and directories inside Data BUT they can't be allowed to do that to the prexisting DataSub directory.
They also must be able to create, modify, and delete files and directories inside DataSub.
I've tried using a deny rule applying to "This folder only" on DataSub and selecting (create files/write data, create folders/append data, write attributes, write extended attributes, delete subfolders and files, and delete) while having an allow
rule for the same + read applying to "This folder, subfolders, and files" but DataSub is still modifiable and then nothing inside it is.
I've also tried allowing (traverse folder/execute file, list folder/read data, read attributes, read extended attributes, read permissions) on DataSub applying to "This folder only" and then another allow rule applying to "Subfolders and files
only" allowing (create files/write data, create folders/append data, write attributes, write extended attributes, delete subfolders and files, and delete). DataSub is still modifiable and nothing inside it is again.
I can't figure out how to do this and I'm not 100% sure it's even possible. If anyone could provide any insight or help I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Hi, If I see it correctly, that's how I would do it;
    - I would desactivate inheritance on all 3 folders & remove all security.
    - I would create 3 groups to apply to each folder.
    - I would make the group member of each folder with the general read flag.
    - I would click in the advanced security to make them able to modify, erase for
    file and subfolder only
I would not use deny as it make the ACL harder to read.

Since the upgrade to 1.3 some of my raw (nef) files have become unreadable in lightroom. Every time I click on them an "Unknown Error" appears. I've tried opening the same raw files with ACR and it works flawlessly. Something with the upgrade has screwed up half my raw images in my lightroom catalogue. Any one having the same issue? I am shooting with a Nikon D70s.

    Thomas,
I'm able to open all conflicting RAW files with ACR, but since upgrading to Lightroom 1.3 half my raw files come up with an "unknown error" and lightroom will not allow me to Develop any of those files. However I can see there thumbnail in Library mode. I have tried deleting the entire album and reinstalling it, only to find the tiff and jpeg files were the only files to reinstall, lightroom said there was an error with the RAW files. I then grabbed them off the original disc and tried again which was successful, yet lightroom still comes up with the same error. My only idea left is to move all my xmp files out of my import folder and see if that makes any difference.
    Cheers
    Ben
