Lightroom CC and GPU previews and exports

Hi,
Does Lightroom CC uses the GPU for creating the previews and exporting images, or just for interactive adjustments in Develop?
thanks,
Misho

GPU is only used in the Develop module and not in any of the other modules. There is a new Auto setting for previews in LR6 preferences which is the default if using LR6 for the first time. If upgrading it's recommended that you change to the auto setting and standard previews will be optimized for your monitor.

  • Does GPU acceleration in Illustrator CC still work after disabling 'GPU Preview' and enabling 'CPU Preview' (on a workstation gpu)?

I'm using a workstation graphics card that allows for GPU acceleration in Illustrator CC.
Selecting 'GPU Preview' instead of 'CPU Preview' under the 'View' toolbar in Illustrator CC results in a more choppy experience.
    Which leads me to wonder:
Does GPU acceleration in Illustrator CC still work after disabling 'GPU Preview' and enabling 'CPU Preview' (on a workstation gpu)?
Does GPU acceleration for my gpu actually improve the performance for my work?

If you disable the GPU acceleration in preferences then you'll be unable to enable GPU preview under the view menu. It will automatically go into CPU preview as the GPU is no longer enabled.
If you're experiencing choppy performance when you do have the GPU preview selected, something is amiss because any GPU that can support GPU acceleration should be able to do it without a performance hit.
What is the video card that's in the workstation?

  • Please speed up Lightroom using OpenCL/GPU acceleration and/or AVX support!

    Hello,
for those, who don't look at the feature request site:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/please_speed_up_lightroom_using_open cl_gup_acceleration_and_or_avx_support
    Hello,
I enjoy using LR. But there is still one thing that lacks: Performance, especially in the Develop Module and Zooming...
So please speed up LR using:
    - OpenCL/GPU acceleration. Capture One pro 6 is doing this. If they can do this, Adobe can also!
    - AVX support: Nik Software is using this. Processes got 1,5 to 2,6 times faster than before. So again... if Nik Software is capable of implementing this, Adobe should be able as well!
So, I am no expert, but from what I have read I think it is possible for Adobe.
Would appreciate to hear from other people who have more inside knowledge if this is possible for LR!
    Thanks, Adobe for hearing us.
    Christoph

    Hello Keith,
    thanks for the info!
It well might be that OpenCL causes some problems. On the other side sometimes I don't know how good a forum is to measure the problems.
Remember when a new LR Release comes out and the forum is flooded mit posts about the problems? If you just read alle the posts in the LR forum you could come to the conclusion that the new LR is completely unuseable. But in reality I never had a problem upgrading to the new LR version...
I understand your point and it might really by to early to implement this technology in LR.
But I still hope for the other direction: AVX .
I just think that we have the hardware possibilities to improve speed and LR should take advantage of this.
    Kind regards,
    Christoph

  • Videos Showing Green and Pink (Preview and Export)

I've imported a series of MTS videos. In the timeline - the color is fine. In the Source/Program monitors, they get a weird green and pink overlay. Any thoughts?

When I converted with Media Encoder to MP4, it still happened.
After reading all the posts, here's what I did: emptied the Media Cache in
    PP, then downloaded PP '14
It went away, for whatever reason

  • About mismatch in print layout in direct print and  print preview and pdf!

    Hi ,
I have created one smartforms, when I run the standard trasaction VF03 and select any output type  and then when I click on print preview button, and then when  I put  PDF!  in address bar  ,the print preview will convert in  PDF format,it will show output without bold   and comes only in normal fonts.
Also, when I run transaction VF03 and direct click Print button, then  it shows print as per requirement , but it overwrites some part on the end of page where company address is priprinted on stationary,so how can i show print format same in both condition without overwriting?
    Thanks.

    HI friend,
The one which is coming in the print (hard copy) is the correct one.
    Print preview may be different.
So if the print is coming in overlapping format means check whether the windows are aligned properly. Because if you have given any data in main window and when it grows it over laps on another window.
If that's is correct check the printer settings for it. Only these would cause the print to be distorted.
Check this and revert back if you have any issues we will help you.
    Thanks,
    Sri Hari

  • RAM and GPU ultrahot and extreme noise from Z400

Dear All, I just bought this machine, got rid of the 4 GB of RAM already installed in it and bought 24 GB of Corsair RAM (the only result coming up on their website when using Z400 as a query) for it.The system runs really well, except for how incredibly loud the case fan is, and that the RAM measure 70-80 degrees C (Celsius!!!) in the BIOS. GPU (Nvidia Quadro 295) I measure to 60-70 C in Hwmonitor. I can at least remove one of the two graphics cards, which could help a bit.For the CPU, mobo and HDD, all temps are good = no more than 40 C.How is this possible?I´m wondering if I did right by putting all the nearby cables "inside" of the airflow guide when putting it back on after installing the RAM. The ones from the PSU would have to be there anyway since the PSU is next to it.Is it possible that I have pulled up the power cable for another chassis fan? The one on the backside is indeed spinning.Let it be said that there are about 10 cms till where the wall is from the backside of the PC, and the temp in the room is around 30 C at the moment. This of course makes things hot, but such hot GPU and RAM when system is doing nothing is not normal, and the case fan making such noise trying to cool at (running at about 2200 RPM) shouldn´t be necessary I suppose.I upgraded the BIOS and I see that the fan is at the lowest setting. Moving it up REALLY makes it noise. Thanks in advance!

Jazz, With HWMonitor, the free version, from CPUID.com you can see the RAM stick's individual temps due to having an internal thermisitor built into each stick.  Mine in this souped up xw6600 are running currently about 70C, and the ambient air here measured by HWMonitor vit its "TMPIN2" listing is 19C.  Cool morning.... There are 3 other measured temps at the top in HWMonitor termed Motherboard, CPU, and TMPIN3.  Those also are thermisitor readings, but those thermisitors are part of the motherboards, and I've never been able to figure out exactly where they are located.  The only one that is built in to a cable is that ambient air one, which in the case of the xw4600 and probably your Z400 is zip tied to the front case metal grill, and for the xw6400/xw6600/etc. is integrated into the shrink wrap of the front I/O cable.  It is in the front view pic of the metal case of the xw4600 Ghetto Mod post just barely visible as a black device seen through the second square hole near the top left of the fan, located just above the fan plastic outside edge.  It gets accurate ambient air info in that position. Do me the favor of looking in this forum for "ghetto mod" because I just re-loaded all the pictures that got lost when HP ported our business workstation forum over to this new location.  The Ghetto Mod search will get you to my two main posts on this, and the one you really want to review is that for the xw4000/Z400 series, but the other has some good added info. I'm starting to think that your Corsair in-stick memory thermisitor readings may be interpreted incorrectly by HWMonitor, and you may wish to contact Corsair to find a utility that they know to work properly with the thermisitors they embed in their sticks. Some added info from prior work:  The official front card guide/fan holder for the xw4600, xw4500, xw4400 and perhaps your Z400 could hold a 92x92x25mm fan, and its part number is 325092-001.  Here is what it looks like, and below are views from the top, then bottom.  This particular part is one of 3 fan holders that came in a kit from HP that included a 92mm PWM front fan (kit was option part number DY648A).  I cannot confirm that this will work in the Z400, but all those cases are very much alike, and you can see if the appropriate holes are in your front metal when comparing to my pics from the xw4600:   Finally, there appears to be a newer version of the fan holder for the Z400 and perhaps the Z420 which likely has the same attachment tabs as the old one, 604781-003, and also look under -002 and -001.  This newer part may be directly available with proper fan from HP.  View from top, and the new projection to the right would cover the speaker.  The fan sits behind the card holder slots you see, and I never use the video/PCI card extensions that need to be added to engage in those slots:

  • LR was unable to export the catalog's previews and negatives

My first posting in this forum.  I want to remove everything from my iMac in order to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard, then reload back.  First job is to 'Export as Catalog' all my pics (around 6000) from the Mac to an external hard drive (Maxtor One Touch 4Plus, 450 GB available).  I've tried 6 or 7 times and every time get a similar message - see Subject line.  I've deleted unnecessary folders, gotten rid of unused keywords, and exported 2000 odd of my earlier photos as JPEGS to archive to reduce the volume.  I've reloaded LR and updated to 2.6.  And in the Export dialogue box I've ticked 'Export Negative Files' and 'Include Available Previews'.  The export gets to about three quarters of the way through each time before I get the error message and I have to abort.
    Appreciate any assistance.

Is ALL PHOTOS included in your LR folder hierarchy?  If it is not, then you need to right-click (or whatever the Mac equivalent is) on one of the folders in your LR hierarchy, and choose Include Parent Folder.  Once you've done that, and copied everything over, you can just Locate Missing Folder on that one top folder and it'll find everything underneath it.  If you don't have the parent folder in LR before you copy, you'd have to do Locate Missing Folder on each of the top-level folders.
Once you've copied your photos over, you can rename your local copy of ALL PHOTOS to make sure you're not accidentally finding it, then do the Locate Missing Folder to make sure it works on the Remote Location.
Once you're satisfied your catalog is seeing all the remote photos, and when you're ready, copy your catalog and your previews and backup folders over, and rename the local copy of the Lightroom so you won't accidentally open that copy of the catalog, again.  I would copy things, instead of moving them, in case something happens you can start over.
If you are going to immediately upgrade your mac, then copy all three folder, other than the iChat ones, from Pictures to your remote drive and open the remote catalog and find missing folders all in one shot.  I suggest doing only the photos, first, in case you want to continue working on the photos, the local copy of the catalog will be faster, but if you're ready to upgrade then just do all the copies at once.  The ALL PHOTOS and the previews will be the time-consuming copies, the catalog, itself, won't take very long.

  • Lightroom suddenly stopped rendering previews

I've been using Lightroom since v1 and have been using v3 since it was released.  All of a sudden tonight, while working on photos that were already in my catalog, Lightroom has stopped rendering previews and is much slower to operate.
I've optimised my catalog, I've tried purging my cache, I've rebooted etc.  Nothing I've done is helping, if I zoom in in Library view I just see a blury outline that is the existing thumbnail.  Some of my other images don't even have thumbnails anymore.  If I go to Develop view it behaves normally, it's just Library view that seems broken.

I'd purged the CameraRaw cache, but after no success I ended up deleting my entire "Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata" directory (which freed up 30GB of space and took over 10 minutes at the command line).
Fingers crossed it seems to have resolved my issue... certainly on relaunching Lightroom it's now recreated this folder, hammered my CPU and successfully created new thumbnails for the folder I was viewing in Lightroom.  It's a little concerning just how much it hammered my CPU (100% for about 5 minutes, still sitting at 75% now after nearly 10 minutes) when I was only looking at a folder with 23 images in it... it was also hammering my Lightroom/System disk for the first 5 minutes, but not the disk with my photos on it.
Oh well, will see if it happens again and I might start to manually delete the previews folder semi-regularly.

  • Lightroom preview and JPG color difference.

I'm a Photographer. Using Windows Vista and a brand new Dell 24" HC LCD monitor. Freshly calibrated with a MonacoOPTIX calibration kit. The profile generated is my default monitor profile. After calibration, I looked at some of my past photographic work and the colors looked very saturated to me. And the images all looked a bit brighter as well. I was working in an uncalibrated environment before so I figured thats why my pictures looked different. I shoot in RAW (Canon) and I always (and still do) export all of my work as sRGB.
Yesterday I was working on a personal image and noticed my preview in Lightroom looks a bit different than the output in JPG. I verified my settings and I am outputting to sRGB. I'm expecting my preview and and the JPG to match almost exactly.
    See the screenshot here: http://lifesharephoto.smugmug.com/photos/256400141_Qy7np-L-1.jpg
Notice the web version is much brighter and more staurated?
    Why would that be?

Lou, you are using a non-managed browser. No matter how much you calibrate, it will not show you correct color, even if you use sRGB. This is because your monitor's gamut will differ slightly from sRGB. IE7 is not color managed, even though Microsoft promised it would be a long time ago. Currently only Safari is color managed. Firefox 3.0 beta can color manage if you enable it in the settings. There is unfortunately nothing you can do about it and you have to realize that even if you do everything right, your audience will see different colors. They will all cluster around what you saw in Lightroom though and you should absolutely not trust your IE7 display, even if you calibrate. Only your monitor has that specific response. Other people will see more saturated greens, or more saturated blues, or the opposite. There is no predicting. It will all cluster more or less around sRGB though.

  • Curious question about Lightroom previews and Camera Raw Cache

Posted in the Flickr Lightroom Group as well:
I have noticed something about the Lightroom (3.6) previews and Camera Raw cache that have me puzzled.
I create a brand new empty catalog and purge the Camera Raw Cache.
Then I import ONE Nikon RAW (NEF) file with dimensions 2592 x 3872 (10 megapixels - 10,036,224 pixels).
Next I export that NEF file to an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF file. You would expect the size of that TIFF file to be roughly 30 megabytes (10 megapixels x 3 bytes per RGB value) and in fact the TIFF file is 30,135,830 bytes in size. If you export the same TIFF file but specify ZIP compression the resulting file size is 10,834,038 bytes. Obviously the compression obtained here is going to be highly specific to the image but so far no surprises.
During import I specify render 1:1 previews and I go into Loupe mode and view the entire image at 1:1 size. I also visit the develop module and do a bunch of manipulations on the image but no cropping.
At the conclusion of all of that I exit from Lightroom and examine the size of the Camera Raw Cache folder as well as the Lightroom previews folder. It would be my expectation that the previews folder  should have a rendered full image and that the Camera Raw Cache should also have a rendered form of the raw data. What would you expect the size of those respective folders to be?
In fact - in my trials the previews folder totals a mere 1,675,264 bytes and the Camera Raw Cache which contains one DAT file corresponding to the one cached image is merely 267,374 bytes. This does not seem like nearly enough bits to preserve the rendered image nor is there a full size image tucked away in the actual catalog either - that file is not large enough to contain that. And yet I can use Loupe mode at 1:1 size and move from image to image with no loading delays (even when importing multiple files).
I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious in my analysis and if not, whether someone might care to speculate as to what magic Adobe is practicing here. Even if we grant them some special algorithm to compress their previews I don't see how they can achieve a compression so much greater than the ZIP-compressed TIFF file achieves.
And for those that might think to ask - I've repeated these experiments with multiple raw images and on both the PC and MAC platforms.
I look forward to some answers or interesting theories or perhaps someone might replicate the experiment and report findings.

MadMan and Hal - thanks so much.
So that was my D'Oh moment of what I was missing - the use of re-rendered JPGS as previews. That certainly does fit with the file sizes I am seeing. I had naively assumed that the previews might have tried to preserve the full fidelity of the image - But as you suggest that full fidelity is likely only there in the develop module.
This perhaps explains another observation from the Develop module - moving from one image to another might display "Loading" either briefly or across a longer duration. My guess is that the length of the loading process might have to do more with what is cached in RAM than cached on disk in the camera raw cache. More of a shame then that 64-bit Lightroom on 64-Bit Windows cannot grab more RAM than it seems to do at present.

  • Sequence Settings Video Previews and GPU?

    Dear PrP CC Users,
I wanted to get some information partaining to sequence settings.
In the bottom box of Sequence Settings: Video Previews. There are three un/tick boxes:
    Maximum Bit Depth
    Maximum Render Quality
Composite In Linear Color (requires GPU acceleration or max render quality)
Normally I tick all of them. I have a Windforce GTX 770 4GB CUDA mercury engine enabled. I have also set to Optimise rendering for: Performance.
    My questions are as follows.
-Do these selections effect the final output of a timeline for delivery or is it merely for during regular playback and preview rendering?
-Also, when I export using Media Encoder through dynamic link, is it bad to Use Previews for a faster export, often I export to ProRes4444 for Grading, I heard that Preview files will always differ as its created by the GPU and can slightly change the colours dependent on the GPU you have, thus is it better to export and allow it to re-render using the CPU in Media Encoder (I always set maximum bit depth and quality)?
-Lastly, in the export process, when I select Maximum Bit Depth, there are options of the bit depth value (32, 48, 64) does this become redundant since I checked maximum bit depth?
    Thank you.

The first two boxes only affect previews.  The same boxes in the Export Settings dialog will override those and determine the output.
Using previews for export is generally not a good idea, as doing so will incur an additional compression step.  The exception is when the previews are lossless (or nearly so, as with DNxHD).
Not working with ProRes, I've never seen those options.

  • Lightroom CC takes 98% cpu and 3,5gb memory when exporting

Lightroom CC takes 100% cpu and 3,5gb memory when exporting
My computer, which is not bad, becomes unuseable now when exporting
Never had this issue with previous version(s).
Also, I had pretty silly GUI lag, which seems to have gone away by turning OFF GPU-acceleration...
    Why is this happening??
Everything is running on an SSD.
    Please advise.

  • Lightroom 5 will not open and gives me a message saying it encountered an error reading from its preview cache. [was: Lightroom 5 question]

@Lightroom 5 will not open and gives me a message saying it encountered an error reading from its preview cache.

This is the Photoshop forum however.
Close Lightroom and go to your Lightroom catalog folder.
The default location is usually in Pictures.
Delete the file in the catalog folder which ends Previews.lrdata
Do not touch the catalog itself which ends.lrcat
    Then try re-launching Lightroom.

LLightroom is running extremely slow because it's generating a "previews" folder in my library! I literally have to boot Lightroom once it happens! horrible workflow and I'm getting nothing accomplished! HELP NOW!!!!!! This is ridiculous!

Lightroom will build previews when you are looking at the files in library when they are needed if you do not build them when you first import.  If you want just the embeded previews and not have previews built at import then set the following in the import dialog.  This will slow you down later on when you are scanning the library as previews are needed and they are not prebuilt.  Get used to the preview files as they are unavoidable.
    Build Previews     Minimal
    Uncheck       Build smart Previews
