Lightroom CC burning through RAM and pushing up CPU usage above 400% (MacBook Pro Retina, 15", 16GB RAM, Top Spec)

So as the new version of LR was released I've upgraded to CC. LR CC was running really slow compared to LR 5.6 so I disabled graphics acceleration as recommended by a few users here on the Adobe forums.
Now I'm having a problem that whenever I start editing in the basic tab on the develop module, LR CC sucks all my RAM (all 16GB according to memory clean/activity monitor) and my CPU goes into overdrive (I clocked it over 400% on average using Activity monitor app). The fans start spinning up and the laptop starts heating up. As soon as I close the develop module it goes back to normal. I pretty much can't edit anything in LR at the moment. Photoshop CC in contrast runs like a rocket ship, with none of the issues described above.
Anyone else experiencing this?
I've had a look at limiting the RAM usage for Lightroom but there doesn't seem to be a menu option for it.

She's flying! Thats on the down cycle too. I couldn't catch it fast enough but it was over and above 600 at one point.

  • Any problems with heat and fan noise on Guild Wars 2 Macbook Pro retina?

I am thinking to start Guild Wars 2 Mac beta on my Macbook pro retina, but i have been reading in different forums that it heats up the system and that the fan kicks off really loud when playing the game. Anyone has any experience on this? Any guild wars 2 gamers please give me some feedback.

I have been playing GW2 for a while now on Beta. The game runs choppier than windows but I think that's because it's a Beta version. I bet after they finish optimizing it things should change, even heat.
As for the heat, it gets super hot. So hot the keyboard gets hot, and when I push in the keys, I feel heat. It's warm enough to cause concern. I don't know if it's bad or not, but the dude at the Apple Genius/Store said, the MBPR knows when it gets too hot and it'll let you know. He said if it plays and nothing is warning me then it's fine. The MBPR won't allow itself to go to catastrophic failure due to heat.
So I took his advice and have played. Just Monday (October 1st 2012) I played for a good 5 hours non-stop and nothing came up so if the Apple Genius guy is correct then I wouldn't worry about it. I do have AppleCare so if something does fail then I will blame the apple genius guy.
It's a fun game, my first MMO, but it's too hard for me sometimes. I don't like that

  • Changing opacity and flow by taping numbers on a Macbook Pro Retina.

    Hi everyone,
it is surely a easy answer but i can't find a way to change opacity by taping numbers on my Macbook Pro Retina (French version AZERTY).
I think the problem comes from the fact that i don't have a numeric keypad.
For instance, on the brush tool, if i enter 1 (by pressing shift+&), i change the flow to 10% and so on, but i didn't find a shortcut to change the opacity.
On the move tool, if i enter 1 (by pressing shift+&), the opacity of the active layer don't change.
I am nearly sure that the problem comes from the Macbook Pro Retina keyboard, so do i have to buy a additionnal numeric keypad ?
    Regards.

What version of photoshop are you using?
Is your version of photoshop also french?
Actually i don't think you should need the numeric keypad.
    Added:
Maybe your right about needing the numeric keypad after all.
A quick test in cs6 seems to indicate that.

  • IMovie and iPhoto won't update on Used Macbook Pro Retina

I purchased a used macbook pro retina and did the usually initial setup for the laptop. My issue is that these two stock apps won't update in the app store. I recieve a message asking me to login using the ID that was used to purchase the app. I am assuming this is the ID of the previous owner , which of course I do not have. Any Ideas ???

The MBP needs to be disassociated from the original owners Apple ID. The original owner needs to call Apple Care to request that. Or if you have a sales receipt that proves you legally have purchased the MBP they may do it for you.
Then the MBP needs to be wiped clean and the most recent version of OS X that shipped with the Mac installed using OS X Recovery. You can also reinstall the iLife apps, which you should accept into your Apple ID in the Mac App Store on the Purchaes pane.

  • Why won't my new Superdrive burn either CD's or DVD's to my new Macbook Pro Retina?

My Superdrive can only read CD's. It cannot burn either CD's or DVD's as the options are greyed out.
It asks me to erase them but then states they cannot be erased.
I have tried 3 different brands of CD's/DVD's with no success.
I have installed all updates. I am running Mountain Lion OSX.
    Frustrated!

If you have enough power for the superdrive and the superdrive is OK, you can tell the MBP to handle the superdrive as an internal superdrive by changing a system file. OSX (Mountain) Lion.
You do that with the free Oxed binary editor (but you can also use the Textedit App).
Make a backup copy of the following file
    /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback
Put it in a safe place.
Make another copy and edit that one as follows with "find/replace":
find/replace all "internal" (without the quotes) to "external".
    Save.
Move the file to where you originally copied it, and thus replacing the original file with the changed one.
For all eventuality you still have the backup of the original file.
You may have to make this change again after an update of the OS.

Yes, I too had this problem.
I was issued an update from Apple for a new version software as well as a new version of Lightrooom and now it shows up on the desktop and in finder as it should.

    Lightroom running 4.1

  • Early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 2.7 i7 512GB SSD and 16gb Ram with Serious Cuda Problems! Trying to teach Apple their Macbook Pro Retina isn't a Pro Jan. 11. 2015.

Apple replaced the logic board, wiped the computer, did a fresh instal of the OS, and also a fresh instal of all the programs during the beginning of 2015. The GeekBench scores are the highest of any of the similar computers (at least on the day of my testing). But here's what's happening. The Macbook Pro Retina has a GeForce GT 650m with Cuda Technology and it can't handle editing in Premiere Pro with Cuda Acceleration turned on. Open CL, a second form of graphic acceleration on the Macbook Pro, appears to be functioning properly.
At the Apple Store on 1-10-2015, I was told that since the logic board and the graphic cards have been replaced that there is nothing they can do and they recommend contacting Corporate. This comes after they told me to buy a new logic board and that that would solve the problem. This comes after Apple did not listen, for over a month, about the possibility that they didn't properly build a professional notebook computer.
The computer displays a black program monitor screen, at random times, when the user edits footage with Cuda Acceleration enabled. It used to lead to an entire system crash and/or a Premiere Pro crash before the operating system was completely re-installed. My solution, since I bought the computer, was to edit in Open CL... However, I've come to learn that there is a major difference in performance between Open CL and Cuda Acceleration.
For the Macbook Pro Retina, Adobe Media Encoder render times are about 20% faster with Cuda Acceleration than Open CL. The 2013 Macbook Pro Retina appears to be able to handle Cuda Acceleration in Media Encoder, but I have had a number of issues leading to program crashes on every project before the new logic board and operating system were installed. For over a year and a half, I actually never used Cuda Acceleration. Having sent every crash report and user data to Apple over that time, I truly expected an update of some sorts and it never came.
FYI: The latest Macbook Pro Retina uses the GeForce GT 750m... This is essentially the same graphic card that performs about 10 - 20% faster due to a new "boost mode." More importantly, it actually has the exact same number of Cuda cores. Having the same number of Cuda Cores means that the Cuda Acceleration is essentially the same when exporting or viewing video. To prove a point to Apple that their 2013 Macbook Pro Retina isn't functioning properly, I bought the latest computer with the 2.5 i7, 16gb Ram, 512gb SSD and I can honestly say that the 2014 model works perfectly fine with Cuda Acceleration turned on while editing in Premiere. I can also say that a proper render test proved the 2013 and 2014 model to be the exact same.
I'm new to this whole pay $2700 for a computer that your manufacturer didn't / can't test properly, so I will be contacting Apple and speaking with Senior Advisors, their Customer Support division, and will soon speak with their Corporate branch. I'm confident that the Early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina with a 2.7 i7 16gb Ram and a 512 SSD is nearly the same at rendering video and editing video, provided the Cuda Acceleration works, as their latest 2014 Macbook Pro Retina with the 2.5 i7 processor 16gb Ram, and a 512 SSD. It's truly a great computer and a great build, minus their current inability to properly test / diagnose their computer.
Knowing that the latest graphic card in the Macbook Pro lineup is essentially the same model, I feel that Apple is not directly looking into the viability and life span of their current Macbook Pro Retina product line. They can't test for performance issues relating to their graphic cards, so why consider buying from them when the end user is actually in a position to experience up to a 20% decrease in certain professional programs.
For future reference, I'd strongly urge other individuals to avoid purchasing Apple products if they offer Cuda Technology. In my opinion, Apple is an Open CL organization, at best, who is not responsibly manufacturing / producing computers that fit their organization's strengths. For a fact, they can't test their Cuda Technology and won't even attempt to address Cuda Acceleration errors for Apple owners (01-11-2015). I say this having walked out of the Apple Store on 1-10-2015 with virtually no support other than to contact Corporate.

    Looks like a RAM issue.

  • MacBook Pro Retina (2013) and Photoshop Elements 12 or Lightroom 5?

I have moved to a new MacBook Pro Retina (2013) from my old Windows 7 PC. As an amateur photographer which is better - Photoshop Elements 12 or Lightroom 5?

Lightroom is already optimized for the retina display and PSE12 looks superb on the Macbook pro R. You are never going to get a retina display much larger than 15 inches but once tried you would never wish to go back to other monitors. It’s not just photos; all Apple apps on the MBPr including web browsing are optimized.
Large monitors can be great if you are soft proofing images for print enlargements or for editing and rendering video where the extra real estate is useful. So it comes down to need. In general, images appear sharper on smaller displays.  I upload most of my photos to my own website and Google Analytics tells me that a high proportion of my visitors are increasingly viewing on iPads, tablets and smartphones. For me that makes the MBPr ideal for my photo editing. It has far superior clarity compared with the excellent 27 inch Dell Ultra Sharp monitor on my desktop machine.
The only caveat is that nobody really knows the life of flash storage. Some say four years when writing continuously to the SSD drive and less once you start moving from unused space to overwriting. For that reason I always try to write to an external hard drive or SDXC card; reserving the SSD, as far as possible for running the applications.
I think we are getting a bit off-topic as the OP already has the MBPr and only needs to decide between PSE & LR or both.

  • RAM issue on Mavericks 10.9.3 and 2013, 13 inch macbook pro retina.

I have a 2013 macbook pro retina. Intel I5, 8gb RAM, 250gb SSD. Now I am a student and don't throw very intensive programs at it. Just the basic stuff. And a few casual games here and there. SO my problem is I don't understand why swap has been enabled (although only a bit) and so much of my 8GB RAM is always being used. I thought that Mavericks was supposed to be more efficient in terms of memory. If anyone can help/explain this to me it would be greatly appreciated.

Mavericks is designed to use all available RAM, allocating as you go along. See http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/ for details.

  • How hard can i push my MacBook Pro Retina?

So I like to game on my macbook, but at the same time I'm afraid it won't last very long if I continue with it. If I have best resolution, maximum framerate (fps) etc will this hurt my mac or slow it down?
I'm rocking a mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inc, with intel core i5, 2.6 ghz and 8 gigs of ram. Latest version of osx (yosemite). And I have intel iris 1536MB graphics card.
So if I push my Mac too hard will it "survive" or whatever? I thought these computers were meant for this stuff, but I don't know, that's why i'm asking.
Will battery life also drain after a while?
I have tried best graphics and it handles it very well, but I have no idea if it's a smart thing to do. Will it destroy my mac?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Magnus

Macs are specifically designed for maximum performance, and are impossible to damage through normal use as long as you observe its published environmental specifications. That includes gaming or whatever else you need it to do. If it should reach a thermal limit that cannot be altered, it will throttle its performance to remain within its operational specifications. If that fails to keep it cool, it will simply shut down to protect itself.
Avoid any clever third party hacks such as those intended to manipulate the exhaust fan speed. Doing that will only draw in more environmental contaminants than would normally occur, and could conceivably render its warranty void.
No battery works as well as a brand new one. They are all wear items that will require eventual replacement. Usually, by that time your Mac will be so old you'll want to replace it anyway.
It's obviously an unscientific observation, but I find that the less people obsess about their Macs, the longer they tend to last. Expect your Mac to serve you well until 2020, at least. By that time who knows what we'll be doing with them.
