Lightroom CC Copy as DNG now unusable

Adobe has changed the way Copy as DNG works. It now copies the files as your native raw format and then converts them to DNG in background.
It seems to run 2 processes in parallel at the same time, one to create a search index and the other to do the DNG conversion. It is currently taking 23 seconds to convert each NEF file to a DNG On my system.
DIsappointed!

It's not at all unusual for DNGs to be smaller file sizes if you did the DNG conversion using lossless compression, did you? Fuji raw files are known for being oversized due to the way they write their image data. Also, totally ignore any findings you may regarding JPEGs, those are lossy compressed and don't figure into the equation...

I need help! when I am importing my NEF Raw files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support". The whole purpose of that button is so that the file can be recognized... How can I make the "copy as DNG" button work as it is supposed too?? Thank you

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?
Thank you @dj_paige

• When I import files (copy from jpeg or copy as DNG from raw, where is the full size original stored?

I have the photos go here file, does LR5 put the untouched original there? Do I need my own file for originals and if so, how does LR5 know where to find the full size original? I have everything working but don't understand where my untouched originals go after import. Say I import off my card to My Pictures/Lightroom Catalog/ Photos go here ..... are my originals there? What if I erase my card now, do I only have partial size negatives basically? I don't understand why LR5 didnt put in an originals do here file that imports the full photo to a stock folder. I am so confused I am about ready to throw out LR5. I even bought your instructional DVD and it doesnt make where the original files location clear, it just repeats that LT5 does NOT import the original, just thumbnail and instructions, where is the program getting the photo when I double click to open it , or am I only seeing a lower resolution version of the photo and the full res is now gone because I formatted the card?

When you import photos, you can choose "Copy" or "Move" or "Copy as DNG", and then select a destination folder on your hard disk. This happens on the right hand side of the Import dialog box. So your original files go to this destination folder.
Alternatively, if your photos are already on your hard disk, you can import by choosing "Add" and the original photos remain in the existing location.
If you're not sure where the photos are, open Lightroom, go to the Library Module, and on the right hand side is the Metadata Panel. Set the dropdown to "Default", and it will show you where your photos are stored. Alternatively, you can right-click on any photo and select "Show In Finder"/"Show in Explorer" and Lightroom will take you to the exact folder where the photo is located.
So, bottom line, you are in total control of where the originals go, and if your forgot where you put them, or made a mistake, you can always find out where they are.
What if I erase my card now, do I only have partial size negatives basically?
If your import was successful, then the photos are now stored on your hard disk. So you have the full size original for Lightroom to work with.
it just repeats that LT5 does NOT import the original, just thumbnail and instructions
Lightroom does import the original, which means, in Lightroom jargon, that it records the location and metadata about the photo; in other words, Lightroom knows where the photo is, but Lightroom NEVER contains your photo, your photo is ALWAYS stored on the hard disk.
Because Lightroom now knows where your photo is located, it is important that you not manage your photos (move, edit, rename, delete) outside of Lightroom. Photo managements tasks now must be done in Lightroom. (There are advanced methods that let you manage your photos outside of Lightroom, but these would be NOT RECOMMENDED for beginners)

• Installed Lightroom 5.2 and DNG 8.2 and NEF files are not supported.

I installed Lightroom 5.2 and DNG 8.2 and when I try and import NEF files I am told they are not supported.

If your camera is very new, like a Nikon Df, then wait until the next version of LR/PS/ACR for support.
If your camera model is newer than the latest version of LR, perhaps a Nikon D610, then you need LR 5.3/ACR 8.3/DNGC8.3 which are all available in release-candidate status at Adobe Labs: http://labs.adobe.com/
If your camera is older and should be supported, then are you using and older Nikon Transfer or View NX that are corrupting your NEFs in a way that Adobe doesn’t recognize them? The solution for this is to not use the Nikon products that predate your camera and install versions that came with your camera or are newer than your camera. Or just use LR, itself, or the OS utilities like Finder and Explorer to copy the NEFs to your hard-drive.
If your files are corrupted by obsolete Nikon products, then there is a utility, here, that can undo the damage:

• Made copy in PS, now how to save to LR?

Image from LR edited in PS CS6. I did a color edit saved it to LR, then made a copy to save the layers. Now I want to make a BW of same image to save to LR. When I select "SAVE" CS6 acts as if I selected "Save As". Help.

Hi,
how and why did you make a copy to save the layers ?
When you edit an image from Lightroom in Photoshop (using right click - Edit in Photoshop in Lightroom), and then Save in Photoshop, the image will be automatically converted to TIFF or PSD (I think based on the Lightroom editor preferences). It will be also automatically added to the Lightroom catalog as a new image. Both TIFF and PSD do preserve the layers...
Even if you now do a Save as, the new image will be added to the Lightroom catalog (at least that's how it works for me).
However, if you closed Lightroom and Photoshop and worked on the new image in Photoshop alone, the Save in Photoshop will not update the Lightroom catalog. You would have to save, remember the path and import the image to Lightroom (no copy, just Add in the Import dialog).

Try a few things:
First, try double tapping the home button. You should see a row of apps at the bottom; these are your recenty opened apps. Hold your finger down on any of the icons until they start to shake, and a red minus() appears. Tap the red minus for each app. This will close the app, not delete it. If you have too many apps open, this can cause crashes.
If it still crashes, try the basic troubleshooting steps here:

• Horrible colors in CS3..Photoshop now unusable :-/

Approx. a month or so ago colors started seriously screwing up in CS3. Here are some images of the problem:
A screencapture of a .jpg opened in CS3:

The same image viewed in Win XP default Windows Pic and Fax viewer:

..same image viewed in Windows Pic and Fax viewer:

The odd thing is that the colors revert to normal in Photoshop's Save for Web and Devices dialogue box...here's a screenshot:

Here's the same image open in the Gimp(!)...
http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gimpu.jpg
My vid. card is Nvidia GForce 8900 GT..with the latest drivers.
I've tried opening images with the different settings on the Adobe Profile Mismatch dialogue box as well as changing the settings around in Preferences/Color Settings.
My second monitor is a 12Wx Cintiq and although the images don't look as garish (because it's a better monitor) the colors are still whacky...electric blues, greens and purples.
I've also tried deleting Adobe preferences file and uninstalling and reinstalling CS3.
I haven't tried uninstalling Huey monitor calibration.because it was installed about 6 mo. before this problem started.
Does anyone have any clues as to the problem? Because of this problem Photoshop is now unusable. I was thiking about upgrading to CS4 but that's out because the trial version of CS4 has the same problem :-/
thanks,
Jackie

pfigen...

Sorry..not sure what you mean by untagged RGB images etc? To make sure the problem wasn't something to do with my digi camera I also captured 2 images as screenshots from Flickr. It's the same problem with everything bought in to photoshop...screenshots, images from another camera, from the web, and my camera...everything in PS looks baaad (except when I change the setting to Cintiq display).

<Photoshop will assume that your untagged RGB image is in whatever the current RGB workspace is. If your images are in fact in the same color space as your working space even though they're untagged, they will look fine.>

I used to cut and paste images from the internet or other applications without any problems for years in various versions of PS...so it's odd that the problem started a few weeks ago.

<Can you post a screen shot of your current color settings, including color management and profile policies, as well as your make a model of monitor, as well as what your calibration settings are.

The settings screenshot here:

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/108/settingsf.jpg

How do I find my calibration settings..I just let Huey do its thing.

My monitor is a Chimei TC0 03. Luckily my partner has a newer model Chimei that we can test. If PS looks ok on his monitor hooked up to my pc then it's probably my monitor that's the problem. Is it possible that a monitor's colors can degrade over time..and is not fixable by calibration?

Thanks very much for your help and suggestions pfigen and everyone.

• Import Dialog: Copy as DNG - how to make it a default

In the LR3 import dialog box is there a way to change the default to "Copy as DNG" instead of "Copy"
I always like to convert to DNG on import. It would save me time if I did not have to click on "Copy to DNG".
Thanks,
Henry

This settings stays selected for future import.
Keep in mynd that this is not a global setting, but a per catalog setting. So, you have to select "Copy as DNG" for each new catalog you start. Once you selected this for a certain catalog, it stays so.
For new catalogs, it seems to remember this setting from the last import of the last used catalog.

trying to import photos and copy as DNG. Nothing will upload though. Permissions are all accurate, saving to the right profile, etc. Nothing has changed on my computer but it will not let me import new pictures. Also, updated the software and some images say "preview cannot be seen" and some don't. And when I try to import and I hit "new photos" it's all the photos on my card. My brain is about to explode.

It said something similar where the thumbnails were supposed to be.
Just got the newest edition of LR, 4.4
4.4 is not the newest edition of LR
We don't want to know that it said "something similar", we want to know the exact wording. In fact, you ought to state the exact problem you are having, in detail, instead of saying you are having the same problem.

• Had old Lightroom license with employer. Now have my own copy & need to change it

Hi,
Hope someone can help as after spending hours trying to get help from customer service keep getting cut off.
I have just left a job where I was given a company license for Lightroom. I now have bought my own copy to run on my Mac desktop and laptop. On one machine i deleted and reinstalled software and added my new license no problem and it has remembered it. However on my other machine doing the same method it keeps remembering the old license key from my employers software and defaults back to it even when i try and change it under registration section.
Please help.
Thanks

laurianne,
Try this. I don't know if it will work. You have to have an Apple ID set up as an email on your device.
Under Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendar go to the Apple ID you want the calendar on. Switch just calendar on for that email.
Under Settings->iCloud turn OFF calendar on your iCloud ID.
