Lightroom CC freezing on Import

I just installed LR CC (6) and when I go to import photos it starts the import and then freezes up and never finishes.  I have tried doing this from an external drive, from my iphone 6 plus and have also copied the files I want to import to the local drive and tried importing that way and I get the same issue under all scenarios.  I have also tried shutting off the Use Graphics Processor under the Performance preference to see if this was the issue but still seems to hang.  I also tried creating a new library to see if my catalog was maybe corrupt.
Is anyone else having similar issues?  Please help as LR pretty useless if I can't import photos!!!
Here are my system details:
Mac (27-inch, Mid 2011)
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB

If it was iffy RAM would you not expect the same thing to happen with previously imported files?
More than likely yes (good point), although not necessarily.

Could this be a problem with the USB port - if so how can I check it?
Definitely worth trying a different USB port (there may be a diagnostic, but I'm not aware of any). And also a different USB cable if applicable.

  • Lightroom 5 freezes on importing photos

All of the sudden a few weeks ago when I connect my camera (Canon 5D mark iii) to the computer and import photos into Lightroom 5, the screen just sits there and freezes and I have to restart Lightroom, same thing over and over.  I cannot import any photos from my camera directly into Lightroom.  I have to put them directly onto my computer hard drive and then add them to lightroom.  Any ideas?

I still got a big issue when importing raw photos.
I want to import some photos, no mather how many, lightroom, finder, my whole mac is crashing.
I only import the CR2 files, no smart preview, no tags, no convertion to DNG, no renaming, nothing else, ... There is no video on the card in the camera.
    I this a know issue?
When I use the normal photo importer of mac OS X, everything is ok.

  • Lightroom 3 freezes at startup

I have Lightroom 3 on an IMAC with 4 GB memory.
Up to a few days ago it was working properly.
A few days ago someone disconnected a photo flash card while it was loading into Lightroom. I suppose that might have caused the trouble because since then I cannot start Lightroom 3 anymore it just freezes at startup.
I deleted com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist as was recommended by the Lightroom support site but this does not help.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for any help

I had the same problem on a MacBook Pro, 4GB, OS X 10.6.8, Lightroom 3.4.1.  Specifically, Lightroom would freeze (spinning beach ball) on the opening screen.
One solution was a reboot, and I did this several times in the past.
Interesting. I'd be curious if anybody who starts seeing this with 3.5 finds it to also be related to the MassCameraStorage process or if the hangs are distinct. The symptoms sure sound right in line.
Following up on the suggestions in this thread, I did started Lightroom from the Terminal with the traceback flag.  The only output was,
2011-08-26 11:57:40.596 Adobe Lightroom 3[9398:903] Enabling noisy tracebacks.
Well that cofirms your hang isn't caused by a thrown exception in Lua. It was a long shot, so I'm not too disappointed. Thanks for running that experiment!
Looking at the Activity Monitor, the process with the highest CPU usage by far was "MassCameraStorage", with 80%+ CPU usage.  I killed that process, and Lightroom remained frozen.  However, when I restarted Lightroom, it started up OK.
I'd be curious if others run into this MassCameraStorage process. I don't see any processes by that name on my system, but I also don't have any cameras plugged in, either. I've seen a number of hangs (usually during card/camera imports) reported related to image capture. Do you know where it comes from? (an Apple component or perhaps something specific to a particular camera manufacturer). It'd be interesting to see the contents of the "Open Files and Ports" tab of the panel that comes up when clicking on the "Inspect" button in Activity Monitor. Unfortunately, it looks like that tab is only available for processing running with your logged in user's privileges and that one might be a system process.
Anyway, it sounds like maybe LR is tangling with some other process when accessing attached USB devices (devices are enumerated  in LR to determine the enabled states of import commands and "mass storage" would include hard drives, card readers, some cameras, etc). That may be useful information for others that see the hang to provide to see if there's a pattern to attached devices among the bug's victims.
It may also suggest an API we're using on the main thread (so slow response blocks startup) that we should be more cautious about.
    Thanks -- DT

  • Freezing in import dialog when selecting "Import Preset" FIXED IN LR3.2

    Hi all,
I have just installed Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5 on my Vista Ultimate 32-bit system.
When in the import dialog if i change any settings and click "Save Current Settings as Import Preset", Lightroom 3 freezes and after a minute displays the dialog to name the new Preset. After entering a new name for the Preset and clicking OK it freezes again! then eventually comes back.
I'm also getting freezes when selecting a different import drive, but that only seems to happen when using the external network drives and is possibly un-related.
I have tried running scandisk and defrag on all my drives (no change), Removing all external network drives (no change!).
    My system config is as follows;
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit 4GB RAM 2x 1TB SATA Hard Drives 3.1GHZ E8500 Dual-Core Intel CPU
Plenty of space free on both drives (500GB in each), Swap on D: Drive and O/S on C:
I installed by un-installing the Lightroom 2.6 copy and running the new install(in case it's relevant!)
Lightroom 2.6 was running perfectly before the upgrade.
    Any ideas I can try?
    Thanks in advance!

    FIXED IN Lightroom 3.2 Update

No, factory presets are embedded inside Lightroom and cannot be removed.
Well, actually, they can, but this is undocumented and you'll have to do it after each update.

  • Aperture consistently freezing on import

So here's the situation: I am using Aperture 2.1 on a 17" MacBook Pro (2.33 C2D, 2GB) and it ALWAYS freezes while importing large folders from external FW HDs. The folders being imported may have anywhere from 2000 to 5000 or more photos organized in various subfolders but it always freezes when it reaches the range of 1180 to 1220 photos. I've tried not allowing the system to sleep and it still does this and doesn't seem to be dependent on the brand of HD (using Lacie and OWC drives). If you import the folders in small chunks it does fine but this is very tedious & time consuming. I also use Lightroom and it imports the exact same folders just fine, but I generally prefer the results from Aperture. Is anyone else having this problem and found a solution?

Did you ever have any luck solving this issue? I'm having the same thing happen on an iMac 2.16 GHz with 3GB of ram, importing from OWC drives over firewire 800. I've had freeze issues where drives seem to get "lazy" and spin down, even when they shouldn't. A double-click on the drive in the finder spins it back up and then things continue. But, that didn't work on this new Aperture problem that I just started having when I tried importing large folders.

  • ITunes freezes when importing music from CD and also when playing,

Just recently iTunes has started to freeze when importing music from a CD - it just stops and the progress bar remains as it it. The whole mac then freezes and I get the spinning beachball. I can't use any other application. The same thing is happening when I play music - it's ok for a song or two and then freeze and the beachball appears. I've downloaded iTunes again and reinstalled and it's just the same. Using Safari and Mail etc is no problem at the moment.
I also have a problem getting the iMac to recognise external hard drives - it won't show them on either firewire 400 or 800. I can see my 1TB drive using usb ( it shows up on the desktop, whereas on firewire it doesn't do this) but if I try to open it and see the contents in finder, it opens, but doesn't dispaly the contents of the drive. I can see the disk size but just get a grey spinning wheel in the bottom right hand of the finder window. Timemachine does not work.

I have had the same problem & itunes crashes when i try to import a file. Now i can't even start itune. I've reinstalled itunes so many times, without a fix, I've lost count.
I did post and had no reply. I'll watch this post with interest.

  • Lightroom 4 does not import RAW files from D610

I've just purchased Nikon D610, and my Lightroom 4 is not importing RAW files anymore. What is the problem?

The current version of LR 5 is 5.7 so I’d guess LR 6 will be out at some point later this year, in the next few months.  If money’s no object then upgrade to LR 5, now and to LR 6 in a few months.  If you’ll be very upset to learn you’ve paid $80 to upgrade and then need to pay another upgrade fee for LR 6 then maybe wait and do the DNG thing for a few months, and then upgrade from LR4 to LR6.
The other concern is whether your OS is new enough.  I’d suggest you download the latest LR 5.7.1 update and run that in trial mode for a few weeks—you have 30 days, to make sure your computer can handle it, before spending the money and finding out you need a new computer, first.
The other thing to consider is the $10/month Photography Plan subscription which gets you the most up-to-date versions of Lightroom and Photoshop as long as you keep paying.  Since you have your old LR4 serial number, you can decide to cancel the subscription after a year and use the LR4 serial number to buy the LR 6 upgrade, then.  This assumes that LR 6 will be available as a serial-number-licensed product, still.
The latest LR 5.7.1 update is here:

  • Lightroom 5 won't import RAW files from Nikon D7000

Since the last two updates of Lightroom 5 I cannot import any RAW files from a Nikon D7000. I have imported thousands of photos previously in RAW from the same camera, and even iPhoto has no issues importing them. I just get an error every time, even though it shows a preview of the photos on the card.

What error are you seeing when you try to import?

  • Lightroom Trial Version Not Importing TIFFs

This morning I installed the 30 day trial version of Lightroom. If I import a folder of mixed RAW and TIFF files, I see ONLY the raw files in Lightroom. If I go back into the import dialog and select the TIFF again and try to import, a message is displayed that the CR2 file has already been imported into the library. If I drag a TIFF into the library, the RAW file comes in instead.
However, if I export a RAW file from Lightroom as a TIFF and then try to re-import it, the import is successful and I can see it. I do not recall this occurring in the LR beta. Any suggestions?
I'm running Windows XP Pro with all service packs installed. AMD 3800 dual core PC with 2 gb RAM. The images are from a Canon 5D, and were cropped, edited, and saved as LWZ compressed TIFFs using ACR in the CS3 beta. The TIFFs open fine in CS2 or CS3. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Yes, they are the same name.
My workflow is to import the RAW files to Bridge, rename the RAW files(for example "wdn_070219_0001", etc.), add metadata and ratings. Then, as I make TIFFs, I leave them in the same folder until I'm ready to store the whole project into DNGs, TIFF edits of the original files, etc. I'm likely able to import the older TIFF's because I've converted the RAW files to DNGs and archived those off to a separate folder. What you are saying is, as I save off edits or conversions to TIF, create a separate folder right off the bat.
If that is the behavior, its too bad that it is different from Bridge in that respect. You'd think that if Bridge can differentiate the saide car files from the RAW image, LR would too.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll work with the product with that in mind, for the time being at least.

  • Lightroom 5.4 problem importing older crw and nef files

Built new computer. Fresh install of Photoshop Lightroom 5.4. Imported photos to lightroom 5.4. After import session completed noted some folders in catalog had zero photos. Checked folders in explorer and photos/files are present. Able to open and view photos/files in Photoshop cs5.
Files are raw files format  from canon G1 CRW and Nikon d70 NEF.
Any ideas? How do I proceed? Should I download and install the free Adobe DNG Converter? But these are old cameras?
    thanks

Thanks for the reply. No the files were not list in a LR Catalog anywhere on the computer. I was able to import the missing files by right clicking on the empty folder in the LR Catalog, selected the import to folder option. This opened the import LR Window, I deselected the "duplicate option" . This allowed the files to become visible, not the usual grayed out thumbnails usually seen if attempting to import a duplicate. Once I selected the raw files LR imported them to the folder. I did get a LR message stating that a "smart preview already was present for files.
If LR was able to verify a smart preview for the files from a previous import, why were the folders in LR displaying a 0 for files/photos?
I am in the process of reviewing the LR Catalog to ensure everything was imported.

Why does not Lightroom allow me to import RAW files from my Canon 5D Mark III?
Error message that it does not support cr. file

    Which version of Lightroom?
As Hal points out, if it's pre v 4.1, you can't expect an old version of the software to know what to do with a camera that didn't even exist when the software was released.
Given how many times a day this same issue comes up, maybe it's time Adobe changed the error message to something like "your camera is too old to be supported by this version of Lightroom. Please upgrade" or similar...

You need Lightroom 4 or CS6.  Otherwise you will have to download the free DNG software and convert images.

  • Lightroom 3 will not import any images

[I replied to another thread, but it doesn't seem to be coming up at the top of the post list when I update my information, so I'm reposting in the hopes that someone will notice and offer some helpful advice, as this is rapidly becoming infuriating.]
    I'm running LR3 on Mac OS 10.6.4.
I put my SD card into my iMac's SD card slot, and tried to import into LR3, but got an error that all of my new files were not imported because they "...could not be read (17)".  They can be read just fine by GraphicConverter and Lightroom 2.  I shoot RAW+JPG and LR3 will not import either version (e.g., if I remove the .CR2 files from the SD card, LR3 won't read the .jpgs either).  I also put the SD card into a reader (instead of into the iMac's SD card slot) and that didn't work.
I copied the RAWs to the Desktop and tried to import from there, but in that case I get a message that the import operations were not performed because "a file could not be copied to the requested location (34)".
I imported images from this SD card on the 5th, and I haven't formatted it since then.  The only thing that's changed that I know of is the Mac OS update, but I would expect that if that were the problem, I wouldn't be able to read these files anywhere (i.e., GraphicConverter).
Update:  I've now tried another SD card, and a CF card, and LR3 will not import any of the files on them - I get the same "...could not be read (17)" error.  I have repaired disk permissions, and I've trashed the Lightroom 3 preferences.
Update #2:  I've deleted and re-installed Lightroom 3, and I still cannot import any new images.  Lightroom 2 continues to import just fine.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

OK, I _think_ I have the cause & cure.
    Cause:
Canon says the software [firmware?] bundled with the Canon Rebel XT  "is not fully compatible with the latest version of OSX." I can continue to automatically bring up iPhoto or use ImageCapture, in any case.  Thanks, but I want LR3.  Canon recommended that I set the controls in ImageCapture to specify opening LR3 when a camera is detected.  I did, but it was doing this before, so I saw no difference.  Also, I'm not sure it was doing it reliably, before or after this change.
This software incompatibility might explain why the Canon Rebel XT was not loading into LR3, but would not explain why it was not recognized by the Finder to add to the Devices list.  The Canon wouldn't get added to the Devices list in OSX 10.4.11, either.
ImageCapture could easily see the images on the camera, and could copy them to a HD without difficulty.  But it's not LR3, and nothing convinced the Finder to add the camera to the Devices.
    Cure:
What I did find, eventually, as a method for persuading LR3 to import properly is this:
I set ImageCapture to open itself when it recognizes a camera.
I jack in the camera, and ImageCapture opens.
THEN I open LR3.  It comes up with the present images in the library.
I _click_ on the Import button (lower left), OR use the keyboard command (cmd-shift-I).  It opens the import display, _with_ the images from the camera.
I set the LR3 import settings as I want them - I Copy the files, change file names, presets, etc. as desired.  (I make a habit not to erase the camera files, until all is said and done, and the camera is disconnected from the computer.)
I click the Import button, and it does!
    SUCCESS!
If I have it open ImageCapture first, that seems to persuade LR3 that images are on the camera.
Sometimes iPhoto accomplishes the same end, but I'd rather not launch that - subsidiary issues.
I went through this sequence a number of times, starting from neither software open.  I tried different sequences - LR3 then ImageCapture, camera first or last, etc.  The above sequence worked reliably; the others' responses confused me.
Those of you with similar Canon uploading problems, see if this helps any.  If you don't have ImageCapture, try it with iPhoto instead.  Just open it first.
