"lightroom encountered an erorr when reading from it's preview cache and needs to close"
I can't get rid of this error message. I have moved/deleted the preview cache..did not help. I then deleted all the other files in the "Lightroom" folder...doesn't help. Please help!! thank you in advance
Thanks everyone. Just for future people who may read this... Turns out..LR had created another catalog on my C:/ drive that I didn't know about. (My main catalog is located on a separate drive.) So, when I was doing all of these steps to my main catalog, it didn't work. Problem was on the C:/ drive. I still wasted a ton of time talking to support and the person was not knowledgeable. He/She kept telling me that my catlog was corrupted even though the error message clearly stated it was the preview cache. All of these software companies need to a) bring their support desks back into this country, b) train the people to actually know the product inside and out. I've had to contact 3 different companies for support over the past few weeks and all of them gave me useless generic answers that you can find on their websites. Frustrating. Sorry for the rant and thanks again everyone.

I'm unable to open up Lightroom 5, I get this message in a pop up box: "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from it's preview cache and needs to quit" Underneath that is "Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time when it launches." It hasn't, what should I do? Thanks Shawn (Irish Se7en) .
Can you try to rename (not delete!) the folder named "YOUR_CATALOG_NAME Previews.lrdata" and restart Lightroom?

When I go to open lightroom a message pops up and says "lightroom encountered an error when reading from it's preview cache and needs to quit" I have already restarted my computer, that didn't do anything. I then uninstalled and then reinstalled and still getting the same response.
Open the folder containing your Lightroom catalog. Locate a folder with the extension .lrdata and delete that folder. Do not delete anything else. Then restart Lightroom. It will start building a new previews folder.

Error Launching LR 5: "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches."
I've tried renaming my catalog.lrcat file. I've copied over my most recent backup of the catalog.lrcat and that didn't work either. On Mac:
PS - to open the previews "folder" (a "package" is just a "special" folder) on Mac, ctrl-click and choose "Show package contents.." - same way you open any other special folder, like .app or .lrplugin..

I recently updated my HP laptop's OS from WIndows8 to WIndows8.1. When I went attempted to open Lightroom5 I got the following message:
"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. "
"Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem the next time it launches"
Every time I relaunch I get the same message. I'd like to understand what might be causing the problem so I can remedy and get back to my photo editing. Any clue as to how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

i upgraded from lightroom 4 to lightroom 5 and installed it on a separate hard drive. Initially had no problems util my computer crashed due to the failure of the drive on which Lightroom 5 was installed. Since having my computer rectified, i am unable to use lightroom 5 getting the message "lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit"
I can still use lightroom 4, however, i get the same message when i try to backup the catalog. This occurs during the optimisation phase of backup.
I suspect it is related to Lightroom 5 creating a catalog from the Lightroom 4 files and cannot now locate those files or that they have been corrupted.
Would appreciate any solutions / suggestions. You need to delete your preview cache and have Lightroom rebuild it. Cache location can be found here.

You don't delete a file, you have to delete a folder. Is that what you did?
If you deleted the folder specified above, and you still get the message, then it's the wrong folder. Use your operating system's search function and find ALL folders on ALL disks whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA, delete each one found, and then try opening Lightroom. -
I have a question about Lightroom 5... I used it last night, I go to get on it today and its will not open. I have an error msg "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem when reopened

"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it lauches". What do I do? I get the msg each time I try to open it.
It isn't a file, it's a folder. It will have the same name as your catalog, but will have the extension data. It will be in the same folder along with your catalog. If you need to use the search feature to search for *.lrdata.

I get the following window on loading Lightroom 5.7 -
Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.
Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches.
I have tried several restarts, without success. Also reinstalled Lightroom; no joy
Any suggestions?Using your system browser (Windows Explorer or Finder), open the folder that contains your catalog. In Windows it is in your pictures folder and then in a Lightroom folder. Inside of the Lightroom folder you will find another folder that has the extension .lrdata. It will have the same name as your catalog except for the extension. You need to delete that folder, and then start Lightroom again. Lightroom will generate a new previews folder, and you should be back in business.

Every time I open lightroom I get a pop up message saying "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and it closes. Ive already tried reinstalling, nothing seems to work. Help please!
Open the folder containing your catalog. In that folder you will find another folder with the extension .lrdata, and you need to delete that folder. After you do that, Lightroom should start normally and will create a new preview cache.
