Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit
Lightroom 5.3 quit and would not restart two weeks after the upgrade from LR4. Imported six folders (30plus GB of pictures) sucessfully after the upgrade and all was well. Then the error message. Rebooted several times. No change. Trashed the LR5 preferences suggested in another adobe forum disscussion about the same error. Problem is when the previous folder was upgraded to LR5 standards after the preference trash, the six folders of pictures were not included in the upgrade (this is important: the folders were simply not included at all in the upgrade and do not appear in the folder window). I went through the upgrade motions again and again the folders were not included. That means it's not possible to use the "find the missing folders" option in LR5.3. The folders do not exist according to LR but they are in the same import location they were when all was working well. Two questions: The RAW images are still in the folders (and the backup) both in the same positions. Can I somehow import from the backup or from the original folder from either of their original locations? Or, do I need to trash the original folders and re-import all of the missing pictures into the upgraded ircat -- and not back them up again? And finally, can anyone explain why the error in the first place? Nothing changed from LR5.3 working perfectly this afternoon to not working at all this evening? Mysterious. Thanks.
One of the options i'm given when I try to launch LR4 is to upgrade the LR4 catalog so it's compatible with LR5.3. Might that be the issue? Before the error message and lockout I had imported the images with LR5.3 (which would be the LR4 -2 version of the previews, and LR4 -2 catalog after I made the LR4 to LR5.3 uggrade). But LR won't let me start from -2 catalog, only from the -4 catalog which is the latest upgraded catalog version that doesn't include the folders full of the most recent imported images. Those folders should be there unless when I trashed the preferences and "upgraded again", the original LR4 catalog, not the -2 LR5.3 version, was upgraded instead, which wouldn't include the six missing folders that were imported with LR5.3. The LR4 -2 catalog is the key wouldn't you think? Is there a way to launch that catalog?

I recently updated my HP laptop's OS from WIndows8 to WIndows8.1. When I went attempted to open Lightroom5 I got the following message:
"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. "
"Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem the next time it launches"
Every time I relaunch I get the same message. I'd like to understand what might be causing the problem so I can remedy and get back to my photo editing. Any clue as to how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

i upgraded from lightroom 4 to lightroom 5 and installed it on a separate hard drive. Initially had no problems util my computer crashed due to the failure of the drive on which Lightroom 5 was installed. Since having my computer rectified, i am unable to use lightroom 5 getting the message "lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit"
I can still use lightroom 4, however, i get the same message when i try to backup the catalog. This occurs during the optimisation phase of backup.
I suspect it is related to Lightroom 5 creating a catalog from the Lightroom 4 files and cannot now locate those files or that they have been corrupted.
Would appreciate any solutions / suggestions. You need to delete your preview cache and have Lightroom rebuild it. Cache location can be found here.

You don't delete a file, you have to delete a folder. Is that what you did?
If you deleted the folder specified above, and you still get the message, then it's the wrong folder. Use your operating system's search function and find ALL folders on ALL disks whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA, delete each one found, and then try opening Lightroom. -
I have a question about Lightroom 5... I used it last night, I go to get on it today and its will not open. I have an error msg "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem when reopened

"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it lauches". What do I do? I get the msg each time I try to open it.
It isn't a file, it's a folder. It will have the same name as your catalog, but will have the extension data. It will be in the same folder along with your catalog. If you need to use the search feature to search for *.lrdata.

I get the following window on loading Lightroom 5.7 -
Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.
Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches.
I have tried several restarts, without success. Also reinstalled Lightroom; no joy
Any suggestions?Using your system browser (Windows Explorer or Finder), open the folder that contains your catalog. In Windows it is in your pictures folder and then in a Lightroom folder. Inside of the Lightroom folder you will find another folder that has the extension .lrdata. It will have the same name as your catalog except for the extension. You need to delete that folder, and then start Lightroom again. Lightroom will generate a new previews folder, and you should be back in business.

Every time I open lightroom I get a pop up message saying "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and it closes. Ive already tried reinstalling, nothing seems to work. Help please!
Open the folder containing your catalog. In that folder you will find another folder with the extension .lrdata, and you need to delete that folder. After you do that, Lightroom should start normally and will create a new preview cache.

Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5 -
I just upgraded from LR 5.7.1 to LRCC a couple of days ago. After working with a collection of images in Lightroom CC, this message popped up: "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit." What do I need to do to remedy this? Thanks!
Quit Lightroom
Then trash the preview cache. It’s in the main catalog folder.
Delete the folder with the ending Previews.lrdata
The default location for the Lightroom folder is normally Pictures/My Pictures if you did a standard installation.
Re-launch Lightroom after deleting the Previews folder.
N.B. do not touch files ending .lrcat -
I got this error message after start in Lightroom 5.7 "lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit". It seems also catalog .lrcat disappears from disk. Also preview catalog .lrdata doesn't exists. So I try to reinstall Lightroom without success, I am still receiving the same error. How I can reset Lightroom to new catalog? I have backup of lrcat file, but I am not able to start Lightroom due to this error.
It seems solved. I have copied backup .lrcat to Lightroom data directory and I still have received error mentioned above. But when I doubleclick on .lrcat file in Explorer the catalog have been opened without problems.

Lightroom 4.4 keeps crashing saying "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" please help. I've tried reinstalling it and everything Windows 8.1
I assume you know where your catalogue file (the lrcat file) is located. In the same folder is a previews lrdata folder which you should delete or rename in Explorer, then start LR again.
If I've made incorrect assumptions above, sorry, and we'll go back over it from the start.

Error message on start up "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" I uninstalled and downloaded it again and still get the same error. At this rate I won't have any chance to use the 30 day trial period as it simply isn't working. I have see suggestions elsewhere to delete a particular file, but I don't have it. Any ideas?
You need to trash the preview cache. It’s in the main catalog folder.

Can some one please help me with this error message I keep getting. I was told to uninstall LR and reinstall it and I am still getting the same error message. "light room encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit"..
Go to the folder containing your catalog, and delete the folder that ends in .lrdata. Then start Lightroom, and it will create a new preview file, and you should be good to go.
