Lightroom for jpegs?

Anyone using LR mostly for jpegs and is happy with the results?
John

In my opinion the basic philosophy behind Lightroom is to manage and harvest a set of master pictures which contain a rich set of metadata including keywords and geographical information on one side and "development information" as non destructive edit information on the other side. With other words the pixel information of your master pictures will never be touched.
For me this approach makes the most sense if you use it with pictures in digital raw format because you simply have more headroom for development changes but if you understand the concept in this way it will also work smoothly with jpegs. To see this difference just try the white balance slider in the development module and compare the results between a jpeg version and a raw version of your picture.
The thing I would not recommend is to manage raw and jpeg versions of the same picture within Lightroom. In my opinion there should be only one original within Lightroom whether it is raw or jpeg.

  • Is ACR as good as Photoshop for jpeg processing?

I have CS3 and use ACR 4.1 for processing my RAWs. I love it's intuitive easy workflow.
I have many many jpeg files from my pre-RAW days that I'd like to improve by doing slight adjustments i.e. crop, adjust tone, WB, set white point, contrast, saturation, colour tweaking, resize, sharpen. I do this so they can be displayed online on a Zenfolio or pBase account, NOT for printing.
I like ACR's workflow and myriad of adjustment options yet I wonder if it is a better platform for jpeg processing than Photoshop. For ease of use it clearly is, but what about end product?
For best results, Photoshop requires me to create a new adjustment layer for each adjustment. I DO speed up the workflow by creating Actions that convert the files to 16 bits as well as creating new adjustment layers upfront. I still have to apply batch processes to merge layers, resize, sharpen, convert back to 8 bit and save as jpg. But I still have to go in to each layer and make adjustments. ACR 4.1 is much easier because all the sliders are more easily accessible. But I wonder if it sacrifices results because I don't know if it is working in 8 or 16 bits. With ACR workflow is easier to recover shadow/highlight detail (though I am not sure if it is more effective).
For the best results am I still better off using PS for jpeg tweaking, despite its more cumbersome workflow, because I can work in 16 bits?
I really like ACR's workflow. But from what little theory that I do have it sounds like PS ability to work in 16 bits still gives it the edge.Or am I missing something here?

"...if you open a JPEG...it is converted to 16 bit, linear Pro Photo RGB for editing. It's been shown (by Lightroom) ...that the totality of the edits in CR are in linear ProPhoto you could see a real benefit to processing camera JPEGs (as apposed to already edited JPEGS saved out of like Photoshop) over doing similar edits in Photoshop."
This is interesting and good news! Now my grasp of all this technical talk is limited so bear with me if I am not up to speed. I just want to make sure I understand this.
ACR opens all 8 bit JPEGs automatically in 16 bit ProPhoto workspace BEFORE the actual editing is performed?
At the risk of hopelessly confusing myself even further, why would ACR be a better platform for JPEG processing with out of camera jpegs but not previously edited JPEGs?
Jeff, I know you've stated "it's beed shown by Lightroom" but can you show me this? Where has it been shown? A link, webpage? That way I can look at this myself, spare you trying to explain it to me and (yes this is pure self interest) hopefully free time up for you to work on the ACR 4.1 book I am looking forward to.

  • Lens models selectable for CR2 files, but not selectable for JPegs

    Hi,
When applying the lens profile for CR2 images, Lightroom displays in extensive list of lens models to choose from.  The list for CR2 images includes the Canon 18-200 IS lens that I use.  However when developing a JPeg only image, the lens model list only displays about 20 canon lens models - which unfortunately doesn't include the Canon 18-200 IS lens.  Any help appreciated to enable selecting the full list for jpeg only files?

What you're seeing is what's available. The lens profiles are for either jpg or raw, and there are fewer jpg profiles.
You could download Adobe's free utility that creates lens profiles and roll your own, or use the lens profile downloader that comes with the aforementioned creator to possibly download a profile for your lens created by another user (if one exists).

  • How to make a pdf in Lightroom for PC operating system?

I use a Mac and teach using Lightroom for the digital platform.  I require students to send me pdf contact sheets for evaluation.  My PC students tell me there is no pdf button available in the print dialogue window in Lightroom's Print module.  Is there a plug-in that is are missing?

No, it's just that PDF export isn't built into the OS.
Tell them to send you JPEGs or to install PDFcreator, which adds PDF as a "printer".

  • External xmp file for JPEG

    Hi,
Is there any possibility to save develop settings for JPEG file into external XMP file - not inside JPEG?
It is confusing for all backup software. Backup system have to transfer all modified JPEG files - not lightweight xmp files. Moreover, modification date of original JPEG file changes. I would like to have all my original JPEG files untouched as RAW files.
    Thanks for suggestions

My backup software transfers files through the Internet. So if I make small changes to hundreds of files, I have to transfer all JPEGs which are relatively huge. It takes a long time. External xmp file would be better because of its textual nature and size. Moreover I would like to have original files, not modified by any software (even if image data is untouched). I do like the way how RAW files are handled - no modifications at all.
I know, there are people who like having metadata in JPEG files because they use other applications. Searching through the Internet I found that there is a lot of people who decide not to use LR from that reason (modified original JPEG file). They set read-only attribute for all JPEGs to prevent this behavior.
It's really inconvenient - possibility to save external XMP file as in RAW files would be very helpful.

You do not need to back up all those JPEGs after each change. Back them up once at the start, and then back up the lrcat file (maybe zipped) routinely. This means both the original image data and all your editing work are backed up, and you could reconstruct your picture collection perfectly from your backup. The sidecar-based backup scheme would mean that all your work wouldn't be backed up (or you'd be forced to avoid a range of Lightroom features).
It's a wrong-headed reason to avoid LR. XMP is not written into proprietary raw files because Adobe consider it too risky. With JPEGs, it isn't - and if you are worried, just backup a virgin JPEG immediately after importing them.

  • Can I use both Lightroom for a Mac and PC to do the same project?

Yes, as long as you have a drive that both Mac & Windows can read...LR serials are platform agnostic...

I want to use Lightroom now, but don't want to pay for it again if I start using a Mac.

    Yes, LR is cross-platform.

  • Save to Web for JPEG Does Not Work

Originally when I installed CS4, save to web worked great.  When I would downsize an image so as to post on the web, it would downsize with ease and I could save it as a JPEG.
Problem now:  On the right upper corner of the page, I have it set for JPEG.  When I downsize the image to 250, the "GIF" in the far left bottom corner does not convert over to JPEG.  Thus, the image is not getting downsized properly as it used to.
I still have Photoshop Elements 7 on my computer so now when I want to downsize an image, I work on it first in CS4, get out of CS4 and then go into PS7.
Again, for weeks, the GIF would turn into JPEG on the far let.  Now in CS4 it does not.
What do I need to do to fix this?    I have added a screenshot to show my settings in CS4.
    Thanks.

Are you saying if you select JPEG top right it still says GIF bottom left of the preview window?
How and where are you "downsizing to 250" ?  250 what?

  • 3 reasons why i won't switch to Lightroom for now

Lightroom is so nice, so intuitive & user-friendly that I almost switch from Bibble to Lightroom even if there are some very important features missing in order to call lightroom a professional grade application.
Here are the major reasons why i wont switch to Lightroom for now:
    1. Missing a good sharpening tool
    2. Missing a good noise reduction tool like Noise Ninja
    3. Missing an automated lens correction tool like PTLens
I think the last 3 will not be a problem any more when Adobe releases the SDK When do you think the SDK will be available ?
    Would also be very useful:
    1. Ability to export a slideshow to DVD (as a wedding photographer, i usually provide my customers with a low res slideshow of their pictures at the end of the wedding day).
    2. Option to print to file or option to export to any color profile (the lab where I send most of my print work have their printer profiled & they provide those custom profiles). As a work around, i can for now have an export action that do the profile conversion thru a Photoshop droplet this work but would be better to have that feature built in
In order to work around for the print to file or to jpg file that Im missing, I tried 1 of those virtual printer driver like Miraplacid Publisher It does work but there seems to be a problem with color management... When I print from Photoshop to this virtual printer, I get a jpg file that match exactly what I see on the screen when I try the same with lightroom, I get a jpg file where colors are not exactly what Im expecting
Should those features be available, I would not hesitate even 1 minute to switch to lightroom.

    My answer to your reasons:
    1) and 2) I just take care of taking sharp pictures. I can't see the need of a sharpening tool. I use LR as my digital darkroom, if I want to retouching a picture I have PS Elements and Noise Ninja. AND the new LR 1.1 has a much improved noise reduction and sharpening tool.
OK. I'm not saying that everybody should learn how to shoot properly so that the use of sharpening or noise reduction wouldn't be required, but there are IMHO other tools that can fit the requirements of the casual photographer or photoblogger.
The same for 3. I never needed any lens correction mechanism. I can't see a reason for that either. I don't have lenses that need any correction and I don't like to do fancy stuff on my pictures.
LR gives me exactly what I need, and waht I need is a program to download and work with several hundreds of pictures from my digital SLR, this means basically cropping and applying a colour profile. And IMHO LR does this pretty well, plus all the catalogue and managing stuff. I can care myself for the rest pretty well.

I have used lightroom for ~2 years and have lightroom 5.5 installed on a PC. Yesterday evening I uploaded a new set of photos which I cataloged and rated as usual. After that when I switched to the develop module trouble began. First thing was when using the crop tool the picture would disappear and only reappear once I closed the tool. Then exposure and White balance changes would change the histogram but not the appearance of the photo. Finally clipping was also not appearing on the picture. I first reuploaded the photos. No effect. Then I reinstalled lightroom. No effect. Help please!

  • Wrong EXIF data for JPEGs in Bridge and PS

    Hello,
My Nikon D300 files are not being properly read by Bridge and Photoshop. RAW files are fine. When I get file info for JPEGs, though, much of the EXIF data is corrupted. For instance, ISO Speed is shown as "51200" instead of 500, and Focal Length is shown as "2.0 mm" instead of 140mm, etc. This incorrect data shows up in Bridge (in the metadata panel and file info) as well as the file info dialog box in Photoshop.
When I get the EXIF info in Preview.app, all the info is correct.
Anyone know what might be going on?

Update - this problem is not limited to my D300 files. I just realized that the JPGs from my Canon SD800IS point & shoot are also not being "seen" properly by the Adobe apps. The ISO value doesn't even show up in CS3 apps, but I can see that data in Preview.app.
