Lightroom freezes within 15 minutes of activity and process cannot end

Hi all,
This is driving me absolutely crazy at the moment.
Some time ago Lightroom started freezing, it didn't matter too much what screen was involved. I'd be editing a photo or even doing something outside of lightroom and lightroom would become unresponsive and wouldn't display the current image etc.
It would allow you to close it, however the process would stay open in the task manager. No matter how one tries to close the tree or process, it totally ignores these requests and requires a reboot to resume work. This also happens while using photoshop with lightroom open - the two programs freezing in tandem.
Does anyone have any diagnostics I could try? I have tried doing memory checks on the drive with no problem showing, I have run registry cleaning / ccleaner and so on. There is no spyware or viruses operating.
The reliability monitor does not show these crashes. I am unaware of anything that was installed or uninstalled or when this specifically started happening.
There have been a few driver power state failure blue screens while using lightroom (although nowhere near as many as the simple freezes). Unable to diagnose the problem with this I uninstalled and reinstalled lightroom. I have tried both 4.4 and the new 5 in the hope that maybe something was fixed. My display drivers I am pretty sure are up to date also.
A few dxdiag for anyone that might be able to help.

  • IMac G5 2.0 freezes within minutes of startup

My iMac G5 2.0 freezes within a few minutes of starting up. By "freezes" I mean the spinning beachball appears, and the computer will not respond. This is often preceded by a distinct "metronome" kind of ticking (it sounds like the hard drive freaking out, but I don't know for sure). I have run all software updates (10.4.8). I zapped the PRAM - no change. This has been getting worse for a while. I used to think it was a particular program, like Mail or Safari, but now it crashes with either one, before I can even open them both. I have read many other posts, but none of them mention the beachball (I am not getting any error screen at all), and none of the mention the metronome/ticking sound. Help!
    iMac G5 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for the quick reply. My computer does not fall within the repair program (my iMac is a 17-inch, EMC 2055), and I am not under AppleCare (my iMac is 19 months old). I don't think the hard drive is dying, because I have heard the sound once in a while since I first got the computer (I guess it's possible that it was bad from the beginning). If it is the power supply, any idea how much that will cost me?

  • I use my Apple TV mostly to stream from Netflix, and up until recently it worked perfectly.  Now the film freezes ever minute or so and it takes another minute to start up again.  This doesn't happen when I stream directly onto my laptop.

I have had an Apple TV for over a year.  I use it mainly to stream programs from Netflix, and up until a few months ago, I had no poroblems.  Now it has become impossbile to watch a Netflix program on my TV because the film freezes every couple of minutes, or less, and seems to be downloading.  It starts again, but the same thing happens in a couple of mnutes more.  I have tried pausing the film for a few minutes to let it download, and I have even started a film, and then paused it, half an hour before starting to watch it, hoping that this would allow the entire film, or most of it, to download, but it hasn't helped.  I don't have this problem when I download directly from Netflix onto my laptop, but then I don't need Apple TV.  Of course, I'd rather watch films on my TV than on my laptop.  Any suggestions other than buying a new Apple TV after just over a year?

I also found the following post about a TV interfering with wireless networking:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17354146#17354146
When I was searching I also found similar problems with screen brightness affecting wireless networking in iPads and MacBooks. So it seems like screen backlighting can generate wireless interference. The joy of technology.

  • Firefox 37 beta will not exit and process cannot be killed

The problem appears when all web pages stop loading. I then exit FF. Task Manager shows the process to still be running. It cannot be killed. Task Manager says the process cannot be accessed. The only solution is to reboot.
I have tried Safe Mode and refreshed the browser without success. I tried disabling all plug-ins.
    I am running Win7, FF37 beta.

    Hi David8,
    What version of 37 beta?

This has been occurring since the Sept 15 security update. Mozilla seems to be using 100%+ of my CPU.

  • Lightroom 4.1very slow to open and process pictures

    Hi,
I've downloaded the trial version of Lightroom 4.1 to give a try with my raw files.
First LR is very slow at generating the preview (takes about 30 sec for some files), the only filter applied at import is "Lens correction".
When Applying corrections, it takes seveal seconds to see it on the preview and there is also a lot of lag.
Maybe is a limitation of the trial ????
My RAW files are CR2 from a DSLR Canon EOS 60D (18 Mpix): 5184x3456.
I try LR on the following setup:
    OS: Windows 7 SP1 32bit
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
    RAM: 2 GB
HD system: 7200 RPM 300 GB
    Screen resolution: 1920x1080
What can I try to make it better ????

  • All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software

All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software. Any ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it?

10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like  a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

  • I did a system update and now my computer freezes every minute

As we speak my computer is freezing at 1 minute intervals. It works fine for 1 minute and then stops anything I am doing (even if not online) and the rainbow circle comes on for another minute freezing anything I try to do. This is continuing as I am typing this, making this a long process. I think it has something to do with my system update.
I did a system update last night and it said it was going to install and restart my computer. But an hour later when I checked on my computer it had been stuck on the outerspace screen with nothing on it so it never restarted and I had to turn it off manually. After I turned it on myself I noticed it acting this way so I thought maybe it was because it could not restart to complete the update proccess so I tried to restart it but the computer would only get stuck on the same screen again. I tried it several times, it wouldn't shut down or sleep either when commanded to. I let it rest all night and this morning tried to restart it again and finally it did but the freezing continued. I don't know what is wrong or what to do. I have to type up a lot of homework and I cannot do it if it freezes on me while typing and if I try to save and it freezes again. Help!
I also looked for more system updates and it said it was already up to date.

No, it is set up to only sync selected books.  But I even tried to just remove all books and not sync any and it won't let me do that. It always acts like it is syncing correctly, then all of a sudden all books I'm trying to remove get selected again.
I have a total of 20 books. 9 books are on the phone. I am trying to remove all but one of them and then add one other that currently isn't on the phone. I tried removing the ones I don't want first and syncing with the intention of adding the one I want after the others are removed. It wouldn't remove them. I tried unchecking the box that tells it to sync the books at all and remove everything and when I hit sync it just reverts back to the checked box and the 9 original books.

  • PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences...

I seem to have tried everything to fix the issue but PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences. I am working on a Mac and have just updated to Mavericks as a final attempt to help solve the problem. I have tried calling Adobe but their phone support in Australia is shocking. I have resorted to posting here but haven't had any help yet. I really need to sort this issue out ASAP.

Its it possibly related to your graphics drivers?  Seems similar to something I was experiencing that was resolved by updating my nvida cuda drivers (see thread link).  I also started running activity monitor to keep track of the memory and processor use.  That said after solving the problem by updating my drivers and switching to the CUDA acceleration, on occasion I get into ruts where it opens and freezes all the time.  It does seem helpful to try and reduce project size if possible - I normal keep a track record of sequence revisions and such, but when possible it seems that clearing out as much as possible by deleting or project managing into a new project can help things run better.

  • My newest iMac from a year ago is showing signs of slowing down its processing capability. Notice it especially in Aperture where I get the whirling dervish thing sometimes for a minute or more and once it crashed. Is there a way to "clean up the system"?

My newest iMac from a year ago is getting very sluggish. I notice it particularly in Aperture. I get the whirling dervish thing going on an operation sometimes for many seconds, even a minute or more and once it just crashed and I had to restart with the button. So I'm wondering if there is some way to "clean up the system" that is built into the iMac or if there is a reliable app I can obtain that will clean things up. I'm supposed to have a super fast processor in this version of iMac and lots of hard drive space and RAM. What gives? Any suggestions?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

Put it into DFU mode - hold the sleep/wake button and home button until the screen goes black (ignoring the slide to turn off slider). When the screen goes black release the sleep/wake button but hold the home button. Continue holding the home button for 10 seconds, then release it. The screen should stay black. Plug it into iTunes and it should come up with this message "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. It must be restored before use", that's when it is successfully in DFU mode. Now press the restore button in iTunes and it should run smoothly :)
