Lightroom import folder naming - Folder Description Problem revisited

Cam2pc has a very flexible naming system for importing raw and jpg images from card reader to the workstation hard drive.  We have found Lightroom lacking in this area and so have continued to use cam2pc, however cam2pc is no longer supported, we will be upgrading Lightroom to v5 on a number of workstations and I would like to revisit this issue:  See this thread that I started 5 years ago.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/353920
Cam2pc uses today's date to fill everything automatically except that we key in a folder description, %P ( in the example below it would be "Knudson, Sara Graduation" and cam2pc will create the structure shown below automatically.)
The cam2pc template we created is this:
J:\Pictures\Pictures %Y\%Y-%m %a\[%Y-%m-%d] %P
Because everything is done automatically there is no room for error.  With over a million pictures we don't like errors.  With over a million pictures managed like this, we want to find something that will do this just the same way cam2pc can.  Has Lightroom grown up enough to be able to do this?  (Note: image files are never renamed.  They are as they came out of the camera)
Here is the directory structure that the above template creates.  The "to order" folder is created later in the process by Lightroom or by ProSelect as part of our workflow.

You may wonder how we manage over a million pictures this way, but that is the topic for another discussion some other time.  I just want to replicate this folder creation as the images are downloaded from the card reader.  Breezesys Downloader Pro meets most of my requirements, but I hope LR itself is sufficient.

  • Import photos-choose folder then Lightroom freezes

Everything was working fine until I decided to upgrade to 1.3.1. Did so and then when I wanted to (during import) choose a folder for my import the program freezes. I uninstalled to 1.3. Still same problem. Then I uninstalled everything with Lightroom (even regedit) so I had to rewrite my serialnumber during install - still the same problem. What has happened?

Thanks for the input. I think though that the problem was the following: I had started a backup of catalog thing. It might be so that it wasn´t ready (even if I thought so) before I started to upgrade to 1.3.1. So the upgrade messed around with something. Now it works, but I had to change several times in the Import Photos "screen". Change between the different possibilities and different files to import. (Chant some old shaman songs not to mention to recite the Kirchoff´s Laws was something that I did in the end - I think that actually did the trick).
But it could of course be something completely different.

  • Have saved Bookmarks from my desktop Win XP on a USB stick in a folder named "Bookmarks" How to "import" these Bookmarks in my new new notebook wih Win7 Home Premium with Firefox?

First of all thank you for solving my installation of Firefox on my new notebook. I have successfully installed Firefox on that new PC.
Now I have another problem. I have successfully copied my Book marks from my desktop onto a USB stick in a folder named "Bookmarks" I am trying to 'import" the same Book marks in my Firefox on my new notebook. I cannot. I have tried various ways via "organise bookmarks" or "import" but I do not seem to be able to do it. Any suggestions?

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
Did you save (export) the bookmarks to an HTML file or did you create a JSON backup?<br />
A JSON backup needs to be restored and will replace all currently present bookmarks.<br />
An HTML backup is imported and those bookmarks are merged with the existing bookmarks.

  • Getting Lightroom to Behave: Importing to a folder

I have a definite folder structure that I use which is set in place. I create new folder for each day's shoot before I go to Lightroom to import the images from a card reader. When I first bought Lightroom, all I had to do is point Lightroom to the correct folder from the import dialog box that appeared when I plugged in the card into the card reader. Now, Lightroom creates more sub-folders within that 'originals' folder where I want the images to go. This surely has to do with the way Lightroom is set up in the import dialog box, but first, I don't know how to get that dialog to appear without having images to import, which I have none right now and want to get it set up correctly so images will again simply go directly into the folder without additional folders being created. Is there a way I can call up that dialog box so I can see what settings it has, without having to shoot images and insert the card?

    ambienttroutmask wrote:
Click on import will open the dialog box, but without anything to import you can't set the settings in advance as these are made according to what you chose on each import. In the import box you have a load of different choices of how to import and to where. In your case you would select the particular folder you want to place the files in using copy photos to new location and add to catalog in the file handling box and the select into one folder in the organize box.
I go that far and always before everything went into the chosen folder. Maybe it's that 'Into One Folder" option that is not selected. What it is doing now is making two levels of new folders deep inside of the chosen folder as the place where the images wind up.
I'll take a few snapshots and put the card reader to work to look more carefully at the settings as you have mentioned here.
    Thanks,
    Ken
Got it! It's so great when something simple can put things back on the right track.

  • Importing .ISO files into SCVMM2012 R2 - Folder Naming Quirk

We've run into a folder naming issue in regards to importing .ISO's into the VMM Library. When specifying a folder to import the .ISO into, VMM adds %20 to the folder names where spaces are. Not a huge deal but wonder if anyone has a way around this without
    using dashes or underscores.

  • PS Import folder naming standards (whine)

Okay, this is a rant but...
Why doesn't Adobe adopt an import folder naming standards to be consistent across their programs?! I am picking on PSE since I have noticed their naming convention changes/options.
From PSE4 to 6 to 7, they changed a couple of options - to include the manner of which a date named folder is displayed.
LR2 uses "dashes" in the dates where PSE does not - why?
The dashes/no dashes mess with alphabetical folder sequencing...
Can't we just have a standard for this? Please?...whine complete...

  • Backup Folder naming

I'm having some trouble getting the "backup to" feature in the Import window to behave properly.
I would like the backup file structure to be the same on the backup drive as the primary drive, but as in Lightroom 1.X, it insists on dumping the backups into a folder named (today as an example)
"Imported on September 1, 2008". Is there a way around this? I was hoping that Lightroom 2.0 would fix this problem. Possibly it did, and I'm missing something?
    Thanks

Ok, so I have two Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat in that location's folder. One is in a separate folder called "corrupt catalogs." Assuming I don't want that one , I will just drag the other one into my pictures/lighroom (where the normal version resided before the restore)? I already put the one that was there into a separate folder in the same location to archive it jik.

  • Importing to a folder

    Hi all,
When importing a video iMovie only specifies disks and not folders. Is it possible to specify a sepecific folder I would like the files to be saved to?
    Thanks,
    Ziv

When importing a video iMovie only specifies disks and not folders. Is it possible to specify a sepecific folder I would like the files to be saved to?
Yes and no. Yes you can specify a specific folder but only if that folder is located in specific locations or you create the folder from within iMovie '08 which then places the folder in the required location for that drive.
    1) You are given the option of creating (naming) a new "event" folder or selecting an old "event" folder each time you import clips into iMovie '08. These folders must be in fixed locations because iMovie '08 scans them each time the application is opened for a work session.
    2) "Event" folders must be located in a folder named "iMovie Events" which is must be located at the "root" level of non-startup drives or in the account user's "Movie" folder on the startup drive.
    3) Empty "event" folders can be created at these locations at the finder level or a user can drag folders containing video clips to these locations to manually "create" a new "pseudo-event" folder the next time iMovie '08 is opened. I do not, however, recommend novice users do this because:
    a) video files tend to be quite large and it can take hours to thumbnail tens of GBs of data all at once.
    b) iMovie '08 maintains/uses "absolute" addressing pointers internally and user manipulations at the finder level by a novice can orphan files.
    c) iMovie may or may not error trap the file types before attempting to thumbnail them and if it encounters an incompatible file may or may not cause corruption of the thumbnail files and/or application or produce other problem results like mismatched reference pointers.

  • Download iPhoto to lightroom? when masters folder is huge?

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/import-iphoto.html  Here are the directions.... but I'm lost at step one.
    Background....
CC new subscriber. Mac up to date.
1st time ever to use lightroom & photoshop. Trying for over 12 hours. Ready to throw it all out the window & wondering why the heck did I ever spend this much money on something.  Watched about 45 how-to videos.
    I am completely missing something.
I just want onen little file pictures to be put in lightroom. When I turned my head, I had 4,386 download from my pictures folder on my hardrive; none that I wanted. So I clicked them and pressed remove.
SO..... Now when I go to find Lightroom using the magnifying glass....
    I see this:  <there should be a picture here!>
I really don't care what! I just want my little file from iphoto called WVLHS to be in lightroom so I can edit these stinkin' pictures. UGH!!!!!!!!
    Begging for help.
From a kindergarten teacher who REALLY has to begin to learn to say NO when people ask me to do things at the last minute and I have NO idea what I am doing!
This doesn't even come close to what I'm trying to do... this was supposed to be the EASY PART!!!!
Here are the directions I am trying to follow......
To import photos from iPhoto into Lightroom, first you have to help Lightroom find the original photos, which are hidden in a package file. Then, you can copy or add the photos to a Lightroom catalog just like you would import any other photos from a folder on your computer.
Note: These instructions are for iPhoto '11 version 9.2.
In the Finder, navigate to your iPhoto package file. By default, it's located in /Users/[user name]/Pictures, and it's called iPhoto Library.
Control-click the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
A Finder window opens that shows the contents of the package file. The Masters folder contains all of the photos that are in iPhoto. However, Lightroom cannot access this folder.
Control-click the folder named Masters and choose Duplicate.
    <<<<<<ACK! I CAN'T IT SAYS THERE ISN'T ENOUGH ROOM.....!>>>>>>
It's listed by years....is there a way to just do the last year?
When I did; it began to copy right away, I couldn't go onto the next step.
Drag the folder named "Masters copy" from the iPhoto Library Finder window to your Desktop.Lightroom can see this folder.
Open Lightroom and drag the Masters copy folder into the Grid view of the Library module. The import window opens, with your iPhoto files selected in the preview area. By default, Lightroom wants to Add these photos to your catalog. Select Copy or Move, if preferred, and specify the destination folder and other options in the panels on the right side of the import window.

    Hi Kglad,
    Thanks for the response!
When I click it to follow the directions, it immediately begins to make a copy. It won't let me put it anywhere. For example; on the picture, do you see where it says 2014 copy 2? That's what started to happen when I went to follow these directions:  < Control-click the folder named Masters and choose Duplicate.>
Do I just wait for it to finish & then scoot that copy folder over there?
    Thanks!

  • 17.4Gb in a folder named "Previos System.localized" - is it delete-able?

    Hi,
I wanted to try and free up my hard drive, and I used OmniDiskSweeper to see where all the disk usage was.
The biggest thing in the list is a Folder named "Previous Sysytem" located in the Drive root (allong with the Applications and System Folder).
I have in the past done an Archive and Install procedure, and I am wondering if this is the remnants of before that, but most importantly, I want to know if I can delete it, or if it is in use by the system as its pretty big!
    Thanks alot,
    James

*I have in the past done an Archive and Install procedure, and I am wondering if this is the remnants of before that, but most importantly, I want to know if I can delete it, or if it is in use by the system as its pretty big!*
Yes, that big folder is your ancient system. If you don't have any problems with the current OS version you may delete it.

  • Importing CD to Artist folder\Album folder\file with track number and name:

I have a problem then importing my cd’s to my harddisk using iTunes.
On my previous pc I got what I want, Artist folder, Album folder and file with track number and name:
    e.g.
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\01 Blues Boys Tune.mp3
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\02 Bad Case Of Love.mp3
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\03 I'll Survive.mp3
    But now I get:
    D:\My Music\Compilations\Blues On The Bayou\01 Blues Boys Tune.mp3
    D:\My Music\ Compilations \02 Bad Case Of Love.mp3
    D:\My Music\ Compilations \03 I'll Survive.mp3
In iTunes my settings are Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced: iTunes Music folder: D:\My Music and checkmark in both: “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library”.
My version of iTunes is 8.0.1.11
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

It will depend on the album. Gracenote considers anthologies, a collection of tracks by the same artist taken from different albums, as a compilation. In iTunes the compliation setting should really only be applied to a collection of tracks by different artists.

  • Error importing CD (required folder cannot be found)

iTunes 10.6, running on a Mac Mini with OSX 10.6.8
    Hi all,
A bit of backstory. Been using iTunes to manage my music collection for over 8 years. At one point, I moved my music off of a primary disk to an external disk, although perhaps oddly set up, in that the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file was still local (under ~User/Music), and just the music files were external (under /Volumes/Media/Music).  When the iTunes Media directory structure upgrade happened, the only way I could access my music was to put a soft link from the Music folder to my external drive.
For awhile now, I've been in a state where for the most part, I can listen to all of my music, but when I try to import a CD, I get the 'required folder cannot be found' error.
Help!  Do I have to rebuild my file somehow?  Edit the xml file directly?
    Thanks so much.
I'm happy to provide more information, such as the xml file, directory listings, etc..  I'm just not sure what's helpful.

I have the same problem.  I recently moved my music from a Vista PC to a new Laptop with an external CD drive. It will copy one song from the CD and it will show in the Music file and then I get the message ' Error importing a CD - Folder not found'.  I must unplug the CD drive and plug it back in.  I have seen no fix for this problem.

  • Error while creating folder named "bin" using explorer view in sharepoint 2010

I am getting error when I create a folder in a library named "bin" using explorer view in sharepoint 2010.
When I create folders with other names I don't get any errors.
     Please suggest.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you got an
error when you create a folder named “bin” in a SharePoint library with explorer view.
There are any Microsoft.NET Framework assemblies that have controls or parts that the SharePoint site uses, which are stored in the bin folder. You can remove “bin”  from hidden segments, then you can create a folder named “bin”
in the SharePoint library with explorer view.
1.Opened IIS Manager and selected Server name -> Request Filtering -> Hidden Segments tab -> Removed "bin" from there:
       2.Perform IISRESET:

  • Folder named "ABBYY FineReader 5 Sprint" in Applications....

    Hello everyone,
When I open my Applications folder in Finder, there is a folder named "ABBYY FineReader 5 Sprint" among all of the applications. When I open this folder, there is nothing at all in it, however at the bottom of its window, it says there are 5 items and 129.9 GB available. Does anyone know the purpose of this folder, and should it be there at all? Is it safe to delete it?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    joe

Thanks for marking it as solved joe. Lexmark doesn't have a great reputation for supporting OS X, they do to a certain extent but they don't cover all of their printers for Macs. If you scan the printer section of the various discussion forums, Lexmark come up a bit too often as something people have problems with.
I favour Epson and Canon printers and scanners. They have long worked well with the drivers that come wit the Mac and who wants to fluff around with installing drivers. Today it is reasonable to expect to plug something in and have it print.
Have a look at some of the models here:
    Some All in One printers
and choosing a few, do search on Google to find reviews of the model, just to get some feedback on other's experiences of using them, which can be informative.
