Lightroom Import makes images very contrasty

When I import photos into Lightroom 2, the initial preview shows up, then it goes through the rendering of the full-sized preview. At that point, the tonality changes. The shadows get all plugged up. I am looking at my presets, and I can’t see what would be causing this.
I open the raw files in Canon’s software, and this doesn’t happen. What’s going on?

You are initially viewing the embedded jpg preview (the same one you see on the back of your camera). This is then replaced by the LR preview.
The Canon software automatically applies any settings you have made in the camera (sharpness, saturation, colour calibration, white balance etc.) to the RAW image. LR does not do this. You may apply ADOBE versions of the Canon calibration through the calibration panel in the develop mode.

  • Lightroom import crops image size on import?

    Can anyone more knowledgable than I explain this - and better yet tell me how
    to stop it!
    Canon 40d image sensor has a sensor size of 3888 * 2592 importing into Canons software retains this ratio.
    Import to LR2 and convert to DNG and my size suddenly reduces to 3678 * 2592
    If I have both programs open side by side I can see the missing data - on  a landscape image it has sliced a chunk off both ends.
    Now call me picky - but I consider I am the best person to crop my images.
    It also causes me to have issues when printing - I have to alter the crop size about to get it to print to a size which should have had no issues.
    I cannot see anything in the preferences, so I am now at a loss.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks both, and I need to come clean. It appears that it was a batch of images which were exported out to Photoshop and reimported back. I had the filters set so the originals were 'missing'.

  • Lightroom import images error message

    I have installed a new version of lightroom onto my new MAC, and I am unable to import my images into LR.
    I receive the error message...the following files were not imported because they could not be read... I am able to load the files on a 2nd mac with no problem.  I have tried unistalling and reinstalling LR, with no luck.  What is going on????  This is so frustrating.  I am an avid LR user since version 1 &2 on a PC(new to the MAC world), could it be the MAC?...., however, I cannot figure this one out??
    Thanks

    I know the message talks of reading, but that one sometimes crops up when the files can't be written. Make very sure that you have write access to the folders that you are copying or moving the images into. Just as an experiment, try Adding a photo from some folder on your hard disk. (Add imports the photo without changing its location.) If that works, it will strongly suggest that you need to change permissions on the recieving disk/folder.
    Also, if you are writing to an external hard disk, make sure it's not formatted NTFS. Macs can read those disks, but not write to them. To share a disk between Macs and PCs, you need to format FAT32.

    I don't have a card slot on my Macbook pro  it's about 4-5 years old. I have a Canon EOS 500. When i want to import i use a cable that plugs from the camera into a USB port downloading in either iPhoto o Photoshop. Can I do this also with lightroom or do I need to get a card adapter?

  • Lightroom 4 suddenly stopped importing most images

    Hi All,
    I am using an up-to-date version of Lightroom 4.2 on Mac OSX v10.7.5 with 16 GB DDR3 RAM, a 2.93 GHz processor, and about 250 GB free space on my hard drive. I shoot RAW files with a Canon, and always set my import to convert to DNG.
    I have been using LR since version 1, and I've never had trouble importing. Two days ago, however, Lightroom stopped importing my images. As I often do with big shoots, I began the import process before heading to bed; when I checked the status in the morning, the screen still read "Importing files..." with no images actually imported. I tried it again immediately, same result. I shut everything down, rebooted the machine, and tried again... same thing.
    My process in detail: Connect my camera to my iMac via USB... open import dialogue... check images to import... hit "import." I then get the "Importing files..." message in the middle of the screen, plus the "Convert to Digital Negative and Import" message in the upper left, with the progress bar showing 1/3 filled. Nothing changes from this point, even after 60 minutes. So I click the "X" box in the upper left to end the import. After that, the "Import.." button in the lower left is grayed out, and I cannot try to initiate another import. Hmmm. So I close Lightroom and try again. That's the cycle I'm experiencing.
    After repeatedly trying to import about 400-500 images here, I decided to just try a few. I made a few attempts, and eventually I was able to bring 4-5 images in. That gave me hope, but the next time I tried, no luck. So I began trying all sorts of combinations... rebooting LR, turning off the camera, then restarting everything again. Out of maybe 25 attempts, I was able to pull images in 4 times. Strange and seemingly random.
    Any advice for out there? Should I try reinstalling Lightroom? Would appreciate any tips or solutions.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Is this a camera that has worked previously, or a new model?
    Also - how are you importing? Via USB cable from the camera or using a card reader?

  • Imported images very dark iPhoto 11 (9.1)

    Imported photos are very dark & require considerable editing to improve. Same images imported into iPhoto 09 (8.1.2) on my MacBook are good color and need minimal editing if at all. Can someone advise how to solve this? Or alternatively how to uninstall iPhoto 11 (9.1) and go back to iPhoto 09 (8.1.2)?
    For info videos from same camera imported into iMovie 11 (9.0) are good color.
    Help! Thanks

    As a Test:
    Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
    Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Can't import any images into lightroom 5

    Working away in my studio and suddenly I can't import any images into lightroom 5 (version5.5) for macbook pro os x 10.9.5

    Thank you for your response,
    ...my complete goofiness.
    I somehow managed to change my destination folder in Lightroom when importing images and could not copy to the "location" (or as the right panel indicates, the "destination").
    So adjusted my destination folder and am back to importing as usual.

  • Just set up lightroom 5 and imported images with sequence number but wanted image number.  How do I renumber all images in lightroom with an image number?

    How do I renumber all images in lightroom with an image number?

    Try line-height: 19px; and display: block; (as shown) on the following css seletor :
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a {
         font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, Lucida Grande, sans-serif;
         color: #CC6;
         text-decoration: none;
         padding-top: 10px;
         padding-right: 12px;
         padding-bottom: 10px;
         padding-left: 12px;
         line-height: 19px;
         display: block;
    Normally setting a height on a container which you have no control over is not a good idea. The text can be enlarged and that will throw everything off. The best way is to set no heights at all but use padding and make sure your background image is flexible enough to accommodate the text enlargement.
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a {
          padding: 12px 12px;
         display: block;

    I want to import still images to make a stop motion animation, but when I try to change the duration of still images, it isn't reflected in the timeline.  How can I do this?

    Tonaw,
    If you import your still images using iPhoto, then the time you set for each still, using FCPX Perferences works.
    You can set the durantion from 1 frame to as long as you want them view.
    If you do not use iPhoto to import your stills, the default is 10 sec's.
    FYI: This issue was brought up within a month after FCPX was released. They found out by using iPhoto, you had better control of the amount of time your still was viewed.

    J'ai importé des images sur  disque dur interne, l'importation s'est faite sans problème.

    Merci pour votre réponse. Ce que je ne comprends pas c’est que je peux ouvrir les fichiers directement du disque dur externe mais que Lightroom ne trouve plus rien.

    Il semble un problème avec les autorisations du disque dur externe, ou peut-être le disque dur externe est en format incorrect (on devrait utiliser le format «Mac OS étendu (journalisé)».

That said, using Finder on my MAC I can see thumnails of ALL my images which sit within my Pictures Folder. Equallly on my back-up on the Mac's Time Machine all versions of same images are present. It means that the photos have been moved or renamed or deleted outside of Lightroom. (Hint: don't do that)
