Lightroom Keyword Issue

Greetings. I'm running the 64-bit version of LR3.3 on Windows 7, but I've had this issue since before the upgrade. I have a long list of keywords. I'm finding that if I expand my keyword list keywords near the bottom third are not selectable, even though it shows how many photos are tagged with them. If I open up a metadata filter and scroll to the bottom of my keyword column I get the same results. However, if I do a find and specify a keyword that way it will bring the photos up. I haven't found anything in the forums regarding this problem. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks.

It's a problem with how the list was coded in Lightroom which involved a failure to code around a limitation on the Windows platform. Lists of keywords longer than around 1600 items are truncated. I don't think you'll see a quick fix for it, but I hope it will happen in LR4.
As a workaround, put your keywords into a simple hierarchy.

  • Lightroom 2.6 Keyword issues

    Hello everybody,
I've got a big problem within lightroom (2.6).
In my keyword list, when i select a keyword (to see the photos with that keyword) all my photos in the catalog pops up.
For example there is a keyword with 4 photos in it. When i click it all my photos in the catalog pop up.
Then the catalog automaticly selects a random photo. The catalog was originally made in lightroom 1.1
To show what i'm talking about here a screenshot:
As you can see i selected the word Beechcraft, with 1 photo in it. As a result it shows my entire catalog.
I'm using Windows 7 (64-Bit). All together i think it's pretty odd since lightroom 1.1 did not have this problem. (unfortunatly 1.1 jams after being used for a while (even with compatible mode on XP SP2 and with run as admin enabled)
Anybody has this problem as well? And does anyone knows how to solve this problem?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Stefan

Thank you for your fast reply!
I'm aware of clicking on the arrow to show the pictures with that keyword.
With some it only shows the photos with that keyword, with other keywords (like on the screenshot) it shows the entire catalog.
    Anybody who can help me?

  • Keywording Issue in Lightroom5

Ran across an issue with keywords in Lightroom 5 and wondered if anyone had some advise. When I export an image with existing keywords they showup in the file properties when I open the new image in Windows Explorer. When I re-import that new file back into Lightroom I find that none of the original keywords are visible. This had not been an issue in previous versions of Lightroom - wondering whats going on here.
Thanks for any help in advance!
    Kevin

The most likely cause is that you are using a metadata preset that is inadvertantly deleting the keywords.

  • Lightroom 5 Issues - please help...

    Hi All,
I am new to LR5, but I can't seem to find an easy answer to the following issues, and solutions:
    1. Importing photos creates subfolders at the destination despite having the "create subfolder" option unticked. For example - it is creating subfolder "2013" and subfolder under this "2103/06/20". It's either a bug, or there is another folder option to untick somewhere?
    2. Syncronising folders. Ok - so I've exported a bunch of photos with destination folder under its parent as "Web". The export was to create websize photos for the main folder. Typically, with an import of different types of folders, I would do this a few times for each type of folder. However, I then find I have to manually right click each folder and synchronise each folder to get it to see the new folder which I told LR to create and export into. This is very frustrating, because if I forget to do it, it would seem there is no "web" folder with photos in it. Does LR have some kind of global "synchronise folders" which I can do in one hit for all folders, or is there some automatic option to click somewhere?
    3. I understand the benefits of non-destructive editiing. However, to be able to use the photos I've edited in LR, I have to have exported them somewhere. It's great to use lightroom to find the edited images by filters keywords etc - but then to practically use this it would seem i would need to have created while exporting everything, an identical folder structure somewhere outside lighroom? Because, if I use lightroom to find the images I want to use, then the only way I'll actually find the actuall edited photos is to have a mirrored folder structure somewhere?
So - this seems quite tedious. It would seem for all the benefits of non-destructive editing, and filtering searches, it kinda causes a lot of work to actually use what you've edited!
Please someone let me know if I'm approaching these problems the wrong way - or not.
    Thanks
    Tom

    I don't know
When you do the export, you can choose to have the exported photos automatically imported back into the LR catalog, thus saving you the need to synchronize everything; but before you do that, consider what I write in answer to your question #3
I don't think you need to export everything and then have "mirrored folder structure" of your exports, unless of course you actually need to have permanent and speedy access to the edited photos for non-Lightroom purposes. This certainly isn't necessary if finding the photos in Lightroom and making temporary exports will suffice. Many people don't export much at all; they find all of their edited photos by using Lightroom and not by using their operating system; and when you actually do need to use a photo outside of Lightroom, you export it, make use of it, and then delete the exported photo, knowing full well that Lightroom can recreate it exactly if you need it again. Basically, this is a tradeoff -- disk space being permanently used just in case you need to use the photo outside of Lightroom versus some extra work to recreate the export if you need it a 2nd time in the future. I choose to not export everything and to make my exports temporary; your needs may differ.

  • Aperture keywords issues

Is it just me or are there major issues with searching by keyword?
I've just given three pictures the same keyword and when I use the filter with 'Library' selected only one of them is found. The un-found picture is in an iPhoto library - do keywords not work on managed files? if not what is the point of inputting the keywords?
A second point - how hard is it to go from aperture to lightroom? Will lightroom import the projects along with their keywords from aperture.

Lightroom will not import whole projects and you will lose all your adjustments. I believe that if you export your images with xmp files, that those file will contain the keywords, and Lightroom will bring them in. Do a test. Don't be in a big hurry blow out your Aperture libraries. Lightroom is very different from aperture, and it took me several months to figure out that I was fighting it's workflow, and it was actually costing me significant amounts of time. YMMV.

  • Adobe Bridge Keyword issue

I am using Photoshop CS4 along with the Adobe Bridge that downloaded with it. I installed the software on an iMac with Snow Leopard as the OS. Using the Bridge, I assigned keywords to about a thousand images in numerous folders. I used the Bridge with these keywords to search for my images and it worked just fine. Then I upgraded the OS to Lion and immediately had a significant issue with searching in Bridge. Each time I identified a keyword to search (in the Edit-Find menu), the results came back "no files found". It was by accident that I discovered that, in order for the Bridge to recognize they keywords, I had to double click and open the folder first in Bridge. Once the folder had been opend and then closed, the keywords were activated. Needless to say opening each and every folder containing images has been very time consuming.
I am considering purchasing a new iMac this summer. It will probably have the new Mountain Lion OS in it and I will purchase CS6 to install in it. I am concerned that when I transfer all of my images into the new computer, I am going to have the same Bridge issue, and will have to go through this entire "open & close each folder in Bridge" exercise again in order to search by their keywords.
Has anyone had this issue to deal with? If so, I sure would like to know how you dealt with it.

I have exported my keyword list and saved it to my desktop.
If that was the list of your old system you only have to use the option import keywords from the same menu used to export the list. This will add all your keywords from the old list to your new list. If you use clear and import the old ones will be replaced by the list of the imported keyword list (so if you are not sure also make a back up of the existing list before using 'clear and import'
I also did a search of my entire computer and that file name does not show up.
You probably use Spotlight for this and spotlight is not very good in finding files hidden in the library, try the free 'Easy Find'
I use CS4 and the file in the path you provided is: Bridge CS4 Extensions. However, there does not appear to be a Keyword file in that folder.
You are in the wrong library, the extensions are sited in the library on root level (the computer) and you have to be in the library in your user account.
I overlooked the fact that you are on Lion and that has the user library hidden by default. Do a Google search to retrieve the user library, there are easy temporarily ways and a bit more difficult to make it visible permanent
Once I go through an entire search with "include non-indexed files" checked, have all of the folders/files that have been searched through now been indexed? And does that mean that whenever I perform a search again, I no longer have to have that box checked?
If you go to the Find menu and in the source field select your parent folder that contains all your subfolders the search will go through your entire image content.
You only have to check non indexed files once but after the first search (takes long to index) the option is not taking that much time again so no objection to leave it on.

  • Edit in external editor with lightroom adjustments issue LR5 and PS CC

Since several days when I try (in Lightroom) 5 to edit an adjusted file (NEF, JPEG or TIFF) in Photoshop CC as external editor (with the option "edit a copy with lightroom adjustments") in many cases the adjustments ar not visible in photoshop CC, or only partial visible, and sometimes the file opens not at all. Removal of the preference files of LR 5 and PS CC and  a whole new installation of LR 5 didn't resolve the issue. I have a macbookPRO with Mac OS 10.8.5 and the most recent versions of LR 5 and PS CC. Has anyone experienced this problem and what can be a solution.

I have no idea, but have you tried File / Catalog Settings/ General tab: Relaunch and Optimize. Relates to the database.

Does LR 4 not even open or when does the error occur exactly?

  • Lightroom tether issues.

I shoot events where lots of folks line up to get photographed and I use LR to aid in getting the best shots and allow the clients to select their favorites.
I own a Nikon D700 and tether it to my recently purchased a Dell Inspiron Laptop with WIn7, I-5 processor, 6GB ram & 640GB HD using LR3.2 RC
I bought this computer to solve what I THOUGHT was a problem related to my old Gateway Win XP 2GB laptop.
Turns out the problem reappeared on my brand new zippy Dell.
    Lightroom just stops working.
Last Saturday Night I was humming along on my new computer, allowing clients to select their favorite image(s) to be sent out later.
Humming along right until I hit image #112.
Then my client said: "Hey, where are the rest of my images?"
Sure enough, they weren't on the computer. and they also weren't on my camera.
Now the LR tether control bar reported "No Camera found."
    OMG!!!
Had the 15ft USB2.0 cable come loose?
I spent several minutes checking my connection.   Still no camera.
    Yikes!
I got out my spare USB2.0 Cable and switched it in.  Still no camera.
I replaced my still showing good Nikon Camera battery.  Still no camera.
I turned LR off and on.
Restarting LR may have worked the first time, but it definitely did not work the next time.
(I think I tried purging the LR cache, but when you are staring at a problem like this,
and people are lining up and some are leaving you don't remember everything you did,
but I had "NO CAMERA FOUND" several times that night and tried everything more than once.
Ultimately: Rebooting was the only solution.  (Tick-tock, tick-tock.)
(Meanwhile using the LCD on the back of the camera to show folksw their photo choices.)
After rebooting I could get another bunch of images loaded using tethered capture until it happened again.
(Maybe another hundred images or so - this occured around 4-5  times Saturday night.)
So now I am convinced it is not my computer.
I am now CONVINCED that what is happening to my computer(s) is that LR that is causing the problem when  my computer stops recognising my camera.
This has happened every time I have used lightroom to download & view images on the computer.
Since this has happend to me before, I keep trying new ideas.  but LR keeps failing.
    Is it a "memory leak"?
Maybe it is time to get another program.
    (Open to suggestions!)

I am a photographer who started recently experiencing similar problems with tethering my Nikon DSLR's to LR3.
First, a quick overview of my systems:
    - I am running LR v3.4.1 on both of my 2 x MacBook Pros.
    - My new (3+ months-old) unibody MacBook Pro is running OSX 10.6.8.
    - My older (2.5 years-old) unibody MacBook Pro is running OSX 10.5.8.
    - I own a Nikon D3 and a Nikon D3x.
    - Both cameras are up-to-date with the latest firmware, which is v.2.02 and v.B:1.01 respectively.
About 6+ weeks ago, I was shooting in my studio -- tethering my D3x to my new MBP using LR3 -- when I received an Apple OSX error message saying (something about) the USB port drawing too much power.
**I apologize that I cannot recall the exact USB error message; I was confused as the computer was virtually brand new and I had never seen such an error message before.  I should have noted the exact phrasing of the error message, but unfortunately I did not.**
From that moment onwards, for the rest of the shoot, the camera would only intermittently connect/tether to LR; it kept dropping out and images would not download to the laptop.  Thinking I had a camera USB cable problem, I shot the rest of the job on my CF cards instead.  And, to be honest, as I was very busy that day and then traveling overseas on holiday for nearly a month the very next day, I didn't think too much of about it again.
About a week ago I had my first commercial shoot since returning from holiday.  Thinking I had a camera USB cable problem the last time I shot, I got a new camera USB cable for this shoot.  I then used this new cable to tether my D3x to my new MBP, and it worked without fault throughout the entire 2+ hour shoot.  By this time, I had all but forgotten about the USB error message I had received a month prior, and -- believing I had solved the previous issue -- I had well and truly moved on.
Then, over the past couple of days, I have been shooting another commercial job with my D3x tethered to my new MBP.  The setup worked fine for the first 20+ images, but when I stopped shooting to review the work in LR, and then started to shoot again, the new images stopped downloading to LR.  Strangely, I did not receive another USB error message; the new images simply didn't appear in LR.  However, the LR tether bar still showed the camera connected, as well as displayed the camera's shutter speed, F-stop and ISO, etc.  I left the camera turned on, but stopped and restarted tethered captured in LR.  The camera appeared detected/connected and the images I had just shot moments earlier (that hadn't initially appeared in LR) automatically downloaded into LR and appeared on the screen.
Weird, I thought, and moved on.
But when I started shooting again after the next break I took, the same thing happened to me again.  And it continued to happen all shoot long over the past two days: anytime I stopped shooting to take a break or talk to the models or review the images, the camera seemed to mysteriously "disconnect" from the MBP.  Although, strangely, the D3x always displayed as connected in the tether bar alongside it's most recent shutter speed, F-stop, ISO value, etc.  However, once the camera had "disconnected", these values were frozen on the LR tether bar and would not change even when I changed them on the camera (as they normally do when tethered).  And, again, once I stopped and restarted tethered captured, the camera was immediately detected again and the images I had just shot (that hadn't appeared in LR) automatically downloaded into LR and appeared on the screen.
Frustrated, I tried using different USB ports on my MBP.  That didn't help.
So I tried changing my camera USB cable again (to another new back-up one I had).  That didn't help.
So I tried changing the USB extension cable that I was running between the camera's USB cable and my MBP (to a back-up one I had).  That didn't help.
So I tried changing cameras and tried shooting with my D3.  That didn't help.
So today I tried deleting LR3 and reinstalling it again (only LR v3.0.0).  That didn't help.
So I upgraded LR to  v3.4.1.).  That didn't help.
Then I tried the exact same set-up -- shooting tethered on my OLD MPB running LR 3.4.1 and it's older operating system OSX 10.5.8 -- and using all the various iterations outlined above (e.g. using both USB camera cables, using both USB extension cables, using both my D3 and my D3x, using both USB ports on the old MPB, etc) and was simply unable to replicate the problem.  Tethering both my cameras to my old MBP worked fine across all variations; they never "froze" or "disconnected" at any point.
Well, the problem MUST be with the USB ports on my new MBP, right?
Well, I am not convinced the problem is with my USB ports.  This is why...
    - I've never had a problem in the past 6+ weeks (since the initial error message) with any of my USB ports on my new MBP.
    - And I've never had the USB power error message appear again.
    - The USB ports sync/charge my iPad fine.
    - The USB ports sync/charge my iPhone fine.
    - The USB ports operate my mouse and my printer fine.
    - The USB ports operate my memory sticks and external hard drives fine.
I even called Apple Support the other night and told the tech support person my problem and she helped me to reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but it still didn't help.
And, the real kicker (and most confusing/frustrating thing for me): as I sit here, I've had my D3x tethered to my new MBP using Sofortbild (a Mac tethered shooting application) for the past two hours and it works perfectly: any images I shoot tethered to my MBP using Sofortbild download without any problem.  The application never freezes.  The D3x never stops working.  I can shoot 25 in a row, take a break for 5, 10, 15 minutes and return and Sofortbild and the camera will still work fine.  Exactly the opposite of LR3 on my new MBP.
I have wracked my brain, and the only thing that is different between my old MBP and my new MBP is the OSX version (10.5.8 vs. 10.6.8).  So perhaps there is a bug in the latest OSX that is causing this problem with LR, and when I recently downloaded an update to OSX it somehow started this issue?  I have to believe the USB error message I received is simply a coincidence, as the USB ports work fine for everything else (including tethering my D3x to my MBP right now using Sofortbild).
Does anyone else have this issue?  I am exhausted by this and welcome any insight or assistance that anyone might have.  I am stumped, but certainly open to suggestions to solve this issue.  The whole reason that I bought a new MBP was for faster tethered shooting in LR.  Now that it doesn't work, I am clearly upset.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

  • Lightroom KEYWORDS searchable in SPOTLIGHT?

I was looking through the discussion boards but couldn't find an answer...here's my question.
If I enter keywords into Adobe Lightroom and save the metadata back to the original file, can spotlight search by these keywords??? I know in Tiger this didn't work but I was hoping it would in Leopard. I know that Lightroom isn't 100% compatible with Leopard yet but I thought someone may have the answer. • Lightroom print issues with Espon Stylus Pro 4900

    I'm having a weird issue with my StylusPro 4900 + Mavericks/Lightroom
My prints keep coming out 1/3rd their normal size.
I spent the day troubleshooting and no luck
Using LR4 ad now CC LR + Installed all the updates.
Uninstalled old the old drivers and reinstalled new.
    Restarted several times.
Cleaned up the OSX stuff and more .
I have been using Epson's for over 10 years but have never run into an issue like this.
I'd appreciate any ideas or help!

Not hearing back about the details of your "success" with the Epson driver install, I can only assume that it really does not work correctly - as is the case with everyone else I've read about trying to use the 2200 under Snow Leopard.
The only work arounds are two, and neither is satisfactory:
    1. You can turn off Color management in the first photoshop print dialog and then select the color managed option in the second - this defaults to the printer's drivers instead of using those in photoshop. The result is not right - the colors and brightness are noticeably off - but it is "less unbearably horrible" than what you get if you try to print with the correct workflow: Photoshop manages colors in the first dialog and No color management selected in the second.
    2. There is a Gutenberg driver for the 2200 that theoretically could let you print without the Epson printer drivers. However, I have yet to encounter anyone who has gotten this to work properly so that it duplicates the color results formerly achieved with the Epson driver and photoshop managing colors under the earlier versions of the OS.
This is not a good thing. Many of us who rely on the Epson 2200 are not suddenly and without warning and with no word whatsoever from Epson... just plain SOL...
Epson should at least say something about this. Their statement could be "we will not support this printer under Snow Leopard" (terrible policy, but at least we could all go out and shop for new HP color printers...), "we are updating drivers for this (these?) printer(s) and will have them available shortly," or even "we are looking into this problem and will respond shortly."
Right now the silence is deafening. There isn't anything at the Epson site addressing this issue at all, and there is no way to follow up on it from the page addressing Snow Leopard compatibility.
    Poor show, Epson.

  • Lightroom Sync Issues

I am sure this topic has been beaten to death, but I have yet to find an answer.
First off, my sync speeds are painfully slow.  I have 50 Mbs down and 5 Mbs up on my ISP so speed isn't an issue on my end.  I tested my connection speed while Lightroom wasn't even open and very little network activity was taking place.
Now, Lighroom has been stuck on the same photo count in the "status" area showing the sync for hours.  I have tried restarting Lightroom a couple times to restart the connection with no luck in getting anywhere.
Has anyone found a solution to this?  I really want this sync between Lightroom desktop and mobile to work, but so far it seems to be great in concept.
I am using Lightroom 5.5 on an iMac running Mavericks.

I'm not entirely sure what status you're in right now from the thread - whether you stuck in his sync or it's slow?
And what steps have you taken to get into the situation you're currently at?  You're syncing a lot of images, so did you just start sync by logging in, then selecting all these collections for sync and then waiting for it to sync?  Or have you performed any steps in the meantime?  Are you syncing new images both from your desktop to your devices and from the devices back to the desktop at the same time?
According to the log you have been running for ~8 hours and synced ~3000 photos.  That's not great performance overall, but it's also not bad enough to make me sure that there's something going wrong here.
If it's just going slowly, does stopping Lightroom and restarting speed things up again?  We shouldn't really be getting much slower over time with those image counts, but it's possible there is some issue there that we haven't caught.

  • Lightroom CC issues

I have installed Lightroom CC on a 2009 21.5" iMac running Yosemite, 16Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB. I got past the initial installation issue by the suggested method but Lightroom crashes frequently. I have re-installed and this is still the case. Any thoughts? Thanks

My 2009 17" MacBook Pro actually has two GPU - GeForce 9400M 256MB and GeForce 9600M GT 512MB, either of which I can select in OS X Sys Prefs Energy Saver panel. With the 9400M 256MB selected, LR crashing out is frequent. With the 9600M GT 512MB selected, somewhat less-so. Dificult to be statistical about it as I am not using LR CC so much yet as I am doing mostly Photoshop work at the moment. I should also have said I am running LR CC in dual-display mode, with 1920x1200 as the main and 2560x1600 as the secondary (which means mostly as loupe in the Develop Module); that clearly will affect GPU loading also.
LR should not really just crash out if not enough GPU memory, just switch back to CPU to do that render, so there is something Adobe should tidy-up. I don't quite understand the crashing at start up on a "sensitive" image (until navigate away and back) either.

  • Lightroom keyword hierarchy behaviour

what is the conceptual difference between explicitly adding a top level keyword to an image vs having the top level keyword being added automatically by adding one of its lower level "child" keywords to the image?
I don't see why there should be any conceptual difference but for some reason, Lightroom treats them differently - the former places a checkmark next to the top level keyword and includes it in the keyword counter (which would be my preferred behaviour), whereas the latter places a hyphen and does not include it in the counter.  What is the hyphen meant to indicate?  It's undesirable because the counter doesn't tell me at a glance how many images are tagged with that group of (parent keyword+lower level keywords).
Note that in terms of the actual keywords that are tagged or exported with the image, there is absolutely no difference.  So it's strange that the keywords panel distinguishes between the two.
I'm using Lightroom 3.6 on Lion.

There's currently no way in LR 3 or 4 beta to get the behavior you want.  You could submit a suggestion to the feedback forum that Adobe employees read:

  • Lightroom Keywords not showing in Bridge

    Hi all!
Our companyy photographer uses Lightroom to archive and keyword all of his pictures, which is fine!
The graphic designer, who uses the pictures (that's me!) has to search the picture archives using Bridge (again, fine).
However, the keywords that the photographer painstakingly puts in when he imports images into Lightroom do not show up when I search using Bridge!
We have tried selecting images in Lightroom and hitting Command-S to save the keywords to the file itself. But this doesn't seem to work!
Anyone got any suggestions / help?
For reference, we are both using up-to-date desktops and software (as of March 2010).

Just tried two files with keyword in Lightroom 2 and using Export as PSD to
a folder I have pointed Bridge to. Using the quick search at top of the path
bar or find command in Bridge does provided me the files with that keyword
*However, the keywords that the photographer painstakingly puts in when he
