Lightroom kills my system

Had been having all sorts of problems with my MacPro 3.1 (Dual 2.8, 6 gb ram, dual screens, tons of free HD space, OS 10.8.4). When LR4 was running everything would slow to a crawl. Even after shutdowning LR4 the system would remain slow and erratic until I did a reboot. If I didn't open LR4 everything ran as it always did. If I opened and closed LR4 without doing anything eles, MS Word would take 45 secs to open rather than 3 or 4 secs. Even Chrome would behave poorly in terms of speed.
After months of testing, checking, and weaking, the obvious finally became obvious... LR4 was the problem.  Hardwarewise, everything checks out.
I downloaded the 30 day demo of LR5 and started a new catalog using only the images that I shot during the trail period. I was a happy camper. Everything ran perfectly. LR was fast and there was no impact on my other programs. Hurray!
Then I bought the program and inserted the serial number. Everything still seemed fine.
I then imported my whole LR4 catalog (170,000 images) and everything instantly turned to crap again. Same type of performance problems, seems even worse than LR4. When working in PS, I clicked back on LR5 I watched my free memory go down to 9mb on the Activity Monitor. Quit LR5 and it took over 1.5 minutes for it to quit.
Logic set #1:
1. System works fine without LR being opened.
2. System goes to crap when LR is opened.
Logical conclusion: The problem is Lightroom and most probably with the catalog and/or how it is being handled.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated,  Henry

You said it's OK with a new catalog (with 1 or more imported test photos I assume), and not OK with your big kahuna, right?
If I were you, I'd try exporting the catalog with just 1 photo in it first, to see whether the problem is due to some non-photo-specific data in it...
*then* if that works, try half, and then add another half if that goes well, or halfen again if not...
I mean it could be the previews, but those are part of the "catalog" too (in the catalog folder anyway, and used in conjunction with the catalog...).
And it may not be such a bad idea to rule out the previews first, by deleting them (.lrdata) folder.
Likewise, it could be preferences, but *usually* problems with those are not photo/catalog dependent, although they could be, so as Bob Frost said, may be worth ruling those out too before going after the catalog (delete .agprefs file in with lr app-data).
Note: make sure you exit Lightroom before deleting or temporarily renaming previews and/or preference file.

  • How to kill a system process from java code.

    Hi,
    i need to kill or remove windows system process like cmd.exe from java code.
    like removing it from end process in task mgr.
    i tried below code but its not removed.
    is there a better way we can do this.
    killing a system process from java code will create any issues?
       public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
       String[] cmd = { "cmd.exe" };
       Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
       p.destroy();
    any suggestions or ideas are really appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi  jtahlborn, mohan
    yes the process is created from my java code.
    in my code iam creating a process like below and if it is running for a long i need to kill it from java.
    For that " Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  7408); " is working fine.
    7408 is my process id in taskmgr created from java and iam manually passing the PID it to kill it.
    But i need to get the PID from java code.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
    Sample Code:
    public static void main(String args[])
            try {
              Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","start"});
              Field f = process.getClass().getDeclaredField( "handle");
              f.setAccessible( true);
              long procHandle = f.getLong( process);
              System.out.println( "prochandle: " + procHandle );
              //Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  procHandle);
            } catch( Exception e) {
              e.printStackTrace();

  • Clean install Yosemite - can't transfer Lightroom to new system - Creative Cloud says I have it, other progs fine.

    Hi Everyone
    I've done a clean install of Yosemite on another hardrive - (Creative Cloud member) re-loading of all other software has worked fine.
    Creative Cloud loader says I have Lightroom and it's uptodate - I haven't downloaded it onto the new system yet (clicking icon goes through basic install) - it wants a a serial number, I have checked on the Mavericks system and the last 4 digits are blanked.
    I have signed out of Creative Cloud on Mavericks - returning to Yosemite, no change to Lightroom status.
    Can anyone help with this situation - can't Uninstall Lightroom on old system, same in Yosemite, if I try to boot it from other drive/system (Mavericks) from Yosemite Trial version or serial number request, stuck with software I've rented and can't use.
    Adrian CB

    Hello Rikk
    Many thanks for your reply.
    Just to make it clear - I have not installed Lightroom 5 on the Yosemite system, it is only on the other hardrive and Mavericks. I have checked what is on Yosemite releating to Lightroom - there are 2 files for L5, one is in System - Library - App Support - Adobe, this file is a serial no. reference, the other is in User - Library - App Support - Adobe, these are a set of Folders for Presets, Sets & galleries etc..
    From the CCloud loader Lightroom 5 will not allow Uninstall, there is nothing (program) to uninstall - it has occurred to remove the files I have mentioned to another drive and see if CCloud loader finally acknowledges it is not on the Yosemite system.
    It does seem that these files are indicating to the CC loader prog that it is on Yosemite - so, if I removed the files - more particularly the serial number file - logged out of CCloud, logged back in and hope Lightroom is available to download. Do I continue if the download is for trial/serial number version - and then put back the serial number file to have it usable?
    Regards Adrian CB

  • New Lightroom community help system

    Adobe is pleased to announce the new Lightroom community help system, which provides core Adobe documentation for Lightroom as well as links to additional learning content from around the web. The URL for the Lightroom community help system is http://learn.adobe.com/wiki/display/LR/Home.
    The new site takes the current online helpLiveDocsand makes it more useful and interactive. You can still navigate to topics using links the left side of the browser. But now, when you click a topic to read about it, you'll find a Basics panel with Adobe documentation as well as a Learn More panel that offers links to tutorials, white papers, technical articles, and other instructional content.
    This site is administered by Adobe, moderated by community experts, and developed with the assistance of a panel of Lightroom Learning Advisors. So you'll also find links to the moderators and advisors favorite Lightroom sites, plus links to troubleshooting sites and a page that lists third-party presets, galleries, and extensions.
    We invite you to visit, comment on our documentation, add links to your favorite tutorials and articles, and share your opinions by commenting on the links that others have posted. And feel free to send feedback on the site to us at [email protected]

  • How to kill a system process on terminal

    Be very careful when killing system process with this procedure, use it only if you really have no other choise:
    1- Open Terminal
    2- Type: top on the shell
    3- Find the number of the process you what to terminate Exp: If you what to kill NortonMiss it will be display like this:
    262 NortonMiss 0.0% 0:00.02 1 21 19 68K 540K 436K 27.5M
    4- You can't kill this process, is system protected, you need to logon as superuser, to do this, open an other window of the shell and type:
    sudo kill 262
    (the number of the process is different on each session, and depending on the application or process you what to terminate)
    5- You'll be ask for your password, type it and press enter, the app will be kill! (when typing the password, it will not be display on the screen). To cancel the kill press CTRL+Z
    NOTES:
    Some system process will reboot after they are killed, but this command is usefull if the process hang up, when is rebooted it will work again on most cases.
    A superuser have access to all the process and has no restriction on the use of commands on UNIX. Be sure not to reveal the password of your computer to anybody, because if they logon as superuser on your mac, they can deleted any folder.
    Use very caution on the use of the "sudo" command.

    Well, I only post this as one method, but I know that UNIX is a very flexible OS, so I'm sure there are more ways to kill a process, thanks for sharing them, and...
    NifflerX, Thanks! I didn’t know that one, but I also like the top command, 'cause I can see the process activity as I work, useful to know if the process still hang-up or all of the sudden goes back to life like a nosferatu... hehehe. By the way... all that people that just got their macs after a PC with.... agggghhh... Windows XP (sorry I say that)... you will find that the top command is the counterpart of the Process Viewer that shows up by pressing CTRLALTDEL on the ugly PC keyboard.
    Oh.,. And Daniel Macks, you can cancel the command with CTRL+Z when the prompt asks for your password, only at this point.
    Thanks for the extra tips everyone!

  • Feature Request: Exiting Lightroom - Kill subprocesses too...

    As it stands, there are certain subprocesses Lightroom starts, to handle things like http connections, I guess.
    Unfortunately, when exiting, Lightroom does not always kill the aforementioned subprocesses, thus the Lightroom process persists and must be ended using task-manager (windows) before Lightroom can be started up again.
    This makes it difficult for plugins that use xmlrpc, as example, to terminate everything so Lightroom can cleanly exit, just ceasing from issueing additional http requests is not enough.
    I dont know if the details of my description are spot-on, but I'm having a devil of a time getting a plugin with an xmlrpc background task to gracefully shutdown so Lightroom can fully terminate its main process, so it can be restarted.
    If I use "taskkill /IM Lightroom.exe /T" then it does the job, but it would be better if normal user termination did the job too, and anyway that command wont work on Mac, which I heard has the same trouble - anybody know how to do the equivalent on Mac (kill process + subprocesses)?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    muhmu,
    Funny thing - it never happened once during initial development, dont know why not, and dont know why it is now, but havent been able to stop it, although it does not always happen even now - strangely enough. Could be something obvious and I just wasn't paying attention... But I only had one thread (in the sidekick application) during initial development, now I have 3: rpc-server, "command", and app-main-loop/ui. Looks like the server and command threads are terminating gracefully, but the app thread hangs until (what I guess is) a timeout, then the main frame closes but not-so-gracefully I'm guessing.
    Anyway, I'll try the start command and report - thanks.
    Rob

  • Kill and System.exit

  • Aperture killed my system

    Hi!
    While importing directories, Aperture made the system hang up completely.
    After switching the machine off and restarting I noticed that it won´t boot up
    again. Using the install CDs and Diskutility I tried to repair the disk, but after booting up again, there´s nothing really working anymore as before. Spotlight doesn´t stop indexing, software crashes frequently and stuff like that. I´m currently reinstalling my system...that *****!
    I read a lot about Aperture, but haven´t seen any issues like mine here.
    Anyone had the same problem?
    René
    g5 2,5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2 GB/ 250 GB/ Lots of external storage
    g5 2,5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2 GB/ 250 GB/ Lots of external storage

    Have my system reinstalled now. Tried Aperture import again, and luckily didn´t crash this time. I imported only smalle portions of the whole image library at a time, maybe that helped.
    What I´m facing now is the same issues that are reported all over the net. Well, that afternoon I spent getting my machine to work really was worth it...not.
    Most annoying issue: When I add metadata to a file, Aperture moves that file to the end of the library, and scrolls back up to the beginning of the library and not to the point I have been before. Try to add keywords to your images in that manner and your ready to kill after 5 images.
    Well...at least I have my system back up...mostly, since I can´t locate my Photoshop CDs right now.

  • Cinema Display 20" kills some system preferences

    My MacBookPro (Core Duo 2GHz) running OS X 10.4.8 is set to require password entry to exit screen saver or wake from sleep or display sleep. These preferences work fine until I connect to the Cinema Display and run in "clamshell" mode. Then the password requirement is bypassed. This is a recent development (sometime in the last two or three weeks, before which it all worked fine). Another symptom, possibly related, is that System Preferences runs very slowly, with considerable delay, requiring a lot of CPU activity. Any way to explore what might be going on or how to fix? (Permissions o.k., I checked and fixed.)

    You may want to install WinACD <http://sourceforge.net/projects/winacd/>.
    See if it lets you reduce the brightness. If not, use the brightness buttons on the display.

  • [WARNING] fglrx invalid map error killed my system after 3 weeks

    Hi! I had to re-install my entire archinstall 64bit after 3 weeks of usage. I noticed when my system froze during a reboot the /var/log it self were going over 9GB!!!!!!!!!!! And that was because the kernel generated tons of errors concering catalyst 9.4-9.5.
    I couldn't check the xorg log since my system died trying to start X (kde4), but it was blank. 9GB that's insane if you ask me, and all the errorrs were related to catalyst "fglrx fireq invalid map handle".
    I tried running cat/nano on the error logs but that also generated in a massive hardware freeze (fans spins down) no wonder since the logs were filled with tons of errors.
    Is there a way to tell the kernel or w/e to shut the hell up? No seriously, I don't want to re-install my laptop in less then a month.
    I know amd/ati doesnt support the 2.29-30 kernel yet but is there a way to silence the errors?

  • 10.4.7 completely killed my system

    MacBook Pro, I updated to 10.4.7. THe update said it could not completely install. I put the computer to sleep and then reopened it a little later. Everything was frozen, so i had to power down the bad way.
    I powered back up and the grey apple screen came up and then after a while, a black screen with the mouse 'arrow' icon and then the beach ball of death.
    I powered down again and rebooted in safe mode. This resulted in about 5 min of the grey apple screen and then a load to the Mac OS X screen where it is frozen there.
    This is my 1st MAC, and my MacBook Pro has had SO MANY PROBLEMS that i have had it for about 3 of the 5 months since it has shipped. And now apple gives me a "messed up" OS X? Please help so I do not have so throw this in the trash heap and buy a dell.
    Please Keep in mind I am good with PCs but will need more explaniation when it comes to running Mac diagnostics.
    Thanks!

    okay, well if safe boot is working that's good news. i would do a safe boot and then remove any items in /library/startup items and also in system preferences > accounts > login items and then restart the computer. what are you running for third party software?? might be useful to know. if removing startup items/login items does nothing, then do another safe boot and try removing fonts folder from your user library to the desktop, then restart the computer. another thing you can do is pull ~/library/preferences/loginwindow.plist to the desktop and restarting. anything that has no effect put it back where you took it from. if not either delete it if it is just a file, or in the case of the fonts folder you would have to just go through them to determine which is the culprit. if you have a large amount, then i guess i would put them back in small batches and then see when you can't boot up anymore. sorry about not getting back earlier, but i was working. keep me posted on what's happening.
