Lightroom Library on a server with external HD connected via FW400

I plan to set up a Lightroom library on a MacMini which I like to use as a file server and will be connected with an external harddrive like a drobo or any other storage box (several TB). Now in case the whole library including previews is sitting on a storage device connected to a MacMini which is again running as my server and connected with a fast 100MB network line, I am concerned that I open the library with a MacPro (very fast) but this will then take long (50MB Tiff files) to work on. How does LR handle the files, what will be loaded (just the preview-JPG)?
I would be interested to know this before I change it to such a setting.

Thx John, I plan to use the library with min 2 people and min 2 computers. So I have the need to share it. To do that with the Macpro does not fully fit in my original network concept. I will try the speed with the current hardware in order to see the actual speed, but I know you are correct. Anyhow, I might look into it from a different perspective and use the server library on the macmini for archival purposes and have a frequently used library on the main working machine (macpro). This is unfortunatlly a bit more complicated and I am not knowledgable enough yet in LR to use it that way. I am sure I can create projects for each bigger fotoshoot which I then can move between LR libraries. This should give me the chance to store the work of a project between computers. Do you agree?

• How to use an iPhoto library, stored on an external HD connected via USB to a Time Capsule ?

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro Retina 15", connected to a Time Capsule.
My iPhoto library is stored on an external HD, connected to the Time Capsule via USB.
I want to sync my photos with my iPhone (iOS 7.1)
The issue is that iTunes can't display anything in the "photos" tab, within the iPhone section in iTunes.
The search icon is turning, turning, even for hours, and then impossible to activate the sync between iPhoto and the iPhone.
What I do not understand, is that it works very well when the same HD is connected directely to my MacBook via USB.
Why is the sync impossible when the HD is connected to the Time Capsule ?
I have been told that storing an iPhoto library on a network HD is not recommended by Apple, but it seems to work for many users, according to forums.
So I would grant the feedback from users that have a similar configuration to mine.
Thanks
Stéphane

Hmm, well you experience rather contradicts the forums, no? iPhoto is not designed for network access, end of story. If you try use it that way then things fail.

does anyone get the mouse lag with an external display connected via the display port?

You don't describe the problem in great detail. Is this the issue you are describing?
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4398076?start=0&tstart=0
If so, then, "Yes." I have the same problem. Note that this isn't a tracking speed problem for me, it's a lag between my hand moving and the pointer moving on the external display.

• Time machine has losing contact with my external drive, connected via a USB port.

Recently my Time Machine program has begun losing contact with my external drive, connected via a USB port. When I attempt to open Time Machine, it indicates there is no external hard drive. When I click on "setting up time machine" it opens airport utility. I've tried rebooting, run disk utility repairs for both hard discs, pulled and reconnected the USB cable, even completely shut down the system. Eventually the two re-establish contact, but I'm not certain what I've done that causes this. The lost contact appears to happen during the weekends. The external hard drive is a MJaxtor OneTouch 4. What should I be doing to solve this problem once and for all?

I use a little app named EasyFind - free at the App Store. It will allow you to search individual volumes or all volumes.
Download it and see if it will help.

Sometime i got a msg while i work with my music program saying Disk running too slow
thanks
Well, yes, it's always a good idea to install a higher capacity internal hard disk. You can then get an external enclosure to house your original 250GB hd so that it can be used for backups and/or additional storage.
As far as the "Disk running too slow" message you're getting, I've never had that message and my external hd that has my iTunes library is 5400rpm. I would suggest that the problem is something else including (but not limited to) perhaps that your external hd may be on it's way out or perhaps too full.
How much free space is there on the external hd? Additionally, how much free space is there in your internal hd?
Have you done any software maintenance recently on both internal and external hard disks?

• X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.
However, if I try to boot with both monitors connected via DVI, the following happens:
Windows logon screen appears -- but there is no cursor on the screen
I enter the password and the login continues for 30-60 seconds, then
Blue screen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION for nvlddmkm.sys with STOP x0000003B
Lenovo has replaced the dock with no change in behavior.
Drivers and BIOS are current.
Most recent change was to set BIOS so Win 7 automatically detects Nvidia Optimus.
At this point, my best workaround is to disconnect one external monitor whenever I need to reboot, and then connect it again after everything is runing. Not terrible... but it really shouldn't be necessary. Any suggestions?
If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

• Thinkpad Edge S430 - Windows does not detect external display connected via HDMI

On a Thinkpad S430 with HD4000 integrated graphics, an external display connected via a HDMI cable is not detected at all when using Windows. The system is fully updated as of the time of posting this message, both via the Lenovo Update tool as well as Windows update.
The Intel driver version is 8.15.10.2696. It appears that this is the latest version, since it does not offer an update when I try to auto-update it via Device Manager.
NB: I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.4.0 on the same machine, and the external display works perfectly fine with this software configuration.
Hence I think that it's very likely that this is a Windows-specific driver issue.
Would Lenovo happen to have a driver update in the works? Alternatively, I will be thankful for any suggestions about possible resolution of this problem.

• Lightroom 4 does not work with external editor

Hi All,
I am using Lightroom 4 and Photoshop elements 9 on Mac OSX. I upgraded from LR3 to LR4 a few weeks ago and since I updated I can not anymore use Photoshop Elements 9 as external editor. I did all setups, still does not work.
Anyone has an idea what could be the issue or did anyone experience the same issue?

• Best practices with external drives connected to Time Capsule?

I'm enjoying my new MBP but the storage limitations are a challenge with twenty+ years of data. I know it's not technically sanctioned by Apple but in another forum I found a discussion about successfully connecting an external drive to the Time Capsule. I tried this for a few months and had some problems, so I wonder if anyone here might have some insight into which of my drives would be best to use in this way and what, if anything, I must do to bless it for the task.
The drive most highly recommended in the forums at the time is the WD My Book. After buying it I learned that is Windows users install a package and update the driver for use with Time Machine, which Mac users are not able to do. The driver is available on the web but it's said to cause problems with Mountain Lion, which I can confirm. It's USB 3.0 and powered, though, which my two alternatives are not. It's also 2 TB and presently in two partitions. I also have a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 500 which gets extremely hot with any use and an Iomega eGo Helium 500 I've been using for backups. Both are USB 2.0.
My goal is to put my iTunes Library and Time Capsule on the net (running 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz, averages 50Mbs). When I did this for a few months with the WD both its shares frequently dropped off my Desktop, as if powered down or something. Also there were the issues with Time Machine many others are having. Right now our video collection sits on the Time Capsule. Would it make sense to move our video to the WD and run iTunes and Time Machine on it? If so, do you have any tips for formatting, petitioning, or drivers (or anything else) to help this run smoothly? The WD works fine when hard-wired and the TC, too is fine without the WD at the party.
With apologies for the tome.

Thanks, but the drive is connected directly to the back of the Time Capsule by an ethernet cable.
Ah, that's a different colored horse.
You have a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive, not a USB external drive connected to the USB port.
Many of those need software/firmware updates to work with Lion. Check with Iomega.

• Lion update with external hd connected containing photos.

Currently running Snow Leopard on my imac with an external hd connected that holds my iphoto library. Set up iphoto to go to external hd. When upgrading to Lion, do I need to do anything, i.e. eject hard drive, or just leave as is for seamless upgrade? Will Lion recognize that my iphoto is directed to the external hd. Thanks in advance.

Apple recommends disconnecting all third-party peripherals when installing system software. Your iPhoto preferences should be unaffected since iPhoto is not part of OS X.
BTW, it's good practice to have a solid backup of your current system before upgrading.

• Can't use voice/video functionality with external domain connected users through federation

Hello All,
Hope you keeping well..!!
We are communicating with external customers lync server through federation option setup on our corporate lync server. We have received the federation setting from the customer with SIP address which has been setup on our corporate lync servers after
that we were able to browse the customer contact through corporate lync account.
We were also able to chat with external customer but however voice/video functionality are not working through same session. Whenever we try to dial out external customer lync account it ended with error message "call ended due to network issue".
We have checked the setting from corporate lync servers and network point of view but doesn't find any issue which cause the disconnection to voice/video over lync. Could you pl help or guide with the way to resolve the issue.
Thanks, MK

Thanks for your reply.
Audio/Video works fine within corporate when dial any lync contact. We only have issue while trying to use the same functionality with any other
external lync contact configured over federation option.
We already checked the security rules and all required ports are open, as confirmed by local resolver group.
We have checked with external parties and according to them their systems are hosted by Microsoft as part of office 365 suite and they already have
federation option for 17 different customers which works fine. Which means issue must be your local end.
Is there any tool available to identify the issue from client end?
Also I have a question here....In my corporate environment...client is sitting in India and lync servers are hosted in UK and users connect to it
over MPLS route. In Client lync configuration we have internal/external servers configured .....so when i tried to make a voice call with external lync users then I see from netstat -a command that traffic hitting to multiple public IP addresses
directly from my machine..
Does it mean that client required internet connectivity with specific open media ports to connect with external parties for video/voice? or in ideal
case all request should handle by corporate internal server which should took UK internet path to connect with external lync contact?
Thanks, MK

• Airport extreme working with external hard drive via USB port adaptor :)

Hi Everyone. I hope this post will be helpful because I have been very frustrated with apple and their customer support and I figured this out on my own by reading all of the discussions and playing with my settings but it took me a while...
I recently for school bought all apple products and I have non-mac products as well. I bought the airport extreme believing I could hook up all of my computers through it and share the printers and my mybook external hard drive with my husbands desktop and the other lap tops. Unfortunately this was not as easy as advertised...
I was not able to successfully have both computers stay connected to the printers so I have to have mine for my laptop connected via the airport extreme and my husband has his desktop connected to a different printer via a ethernet cable. It would work at set up and then a few hours later not print anymore and reinstalling the drivers just confused it... if anyone knows a solution for this please let me know. It worked wirelessly for me but not for him.
As far as the external drive for the airport extreme goes I went and bought an additional USB port hub so I could access my printer wirelessly and my external hard drive as well for time machine back ups.
I set up my external hard drive so that it will save files from both a mac and a non-mac computer and we can both access it (not sure if that matters in the solution or problem for others); however, the desktop (non-mac) was able to by clicking and dragging files to it assess the hard drive and utilize it and my macbook was not able to because the airport extreme showed the drive under disks but when I tried to access it through time machine it was not there. I played with this for a long time and finally figured it out.
I believe I went under finder, then chose go from the menu bar, then chose connect to server and the default for it is afp://10.0.1.1.. You enter this in under server address and you may be prompted to give your password. The password was tricky as well because it showed my computers user name and I thought it would want that password but instead it wanted the password to log into my internet or my airport extreme's password. Once I put this in I was able to open my time machine preferences, finally choose the mybook external hard drive that was now showing up, choose it and my computer is currently doing a back up as I type without the error message of failed, unable to locate volume, or any others.
Hope this posting was helpful and not to confusing and feel free to message me if you need clarification and think this may solve your problem as well. GOOD LUCK!

Seems to me you should have done your homework setting up your network and not assuming that any third party device you choose to use would work without problems.

• Won't boot with external display connected

My MacBook Pro (circa 1997) won't boot with the external display connected. I can connect the external display (20in flat planel) after it has started, and it works just fine.
I have tried two different DVI cables (one of which I think is a DVI-A cable) and the DVI-to-VGA cable. The result is the same.
During the boot phase I get the tone, the apple logo and the progress wheel. After 30 seconds to one minute those disappear to be replaced by an empty blue screen.

In case anyone wonders, my "solution" was to change to a WB Elements Desktop 3TB (only USB 2.0 is currently available for this model). I miss the speed of USB 3.0, but it's much nicer to not have to remember to unplug and plug in the hard drive each time I boot.
Still hoping to see a proper solution to this (since I don't have the WB My Book anymore, I can't test adaher's suggestion).
