Lightroom LR 3.4.1 Exporting Megapixels and Croping & Resizing

I crop in most of my images.  After exporting at Image Sizing/Resize To Fit UNChecked, JPG, 100% Quality, and dpi 300, my cropped images are way below the normal non cropped images size.
So, I recently started trying using resize to fit, selecting megapixels, and setting that to 12.2, and the file sizes increased back to normal uncropped sizes.
12.2 is my sensor size, so I thought it was not really losing any info.
My question is whether this is a good way to resize for prints up to at least 13X19 if needed?
I know Elements has a resize (haven't used it) but in the workflow, I'd like to stay with LR if possible.
Is it decent resizing?
Thanks
Michael

Thanks Ian.
That's a little scary because I can crop anything from 50% to reaching a couple of soccer players across field (even with my 70-200) and the cropped image could be 25% of the total image (sometimes slightly smaller).
?Would it be fair to say that since I am starting with a 12mp camera, that a 50% crop, and resizing by the megapixel choice, would be the approximate quality of a 6mp camera, and still give a good 8X10 or even 11X14?
That brings up another question.
?When I do choose megapixels as my resizing choice, and given my using 25%-50% of the image in a crop, should I choose 6mp instead of the 12mp that it was originally shot at?
I have been using 12mp as the size I wanted (simply to try to get it back to my camera size), and now I don't know what that quality looks like when my soccer customers placed their orders.  They have order from 4X5 to 8X10's already, probably from a variety of crops.

    Any ideas?

My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images from Lightroom and choosing the "Render using Lightroom option when it popped up in the dialogue box. She has been doing this for over a year and a half without any problem. Today when she hit Command E no dialogue box appeared and the image just opened in Photoshop. I'm concerned that all of her Lightroom edits are not being rendered to Photoshop. Anyone have an idea as to how we can get the "Render using Lightroom" dialogue back?

  • Lightroom Export Action and Automator

Hi. Have an interesting anamoly that I hope someone an explain to me. I am trying to leverage Adobe Lightroom's export preset post-processing option to help in importing photos into iPhoto (where I can make easy use of the .mac photocasts). I created an Automator workflow comprised of the following actions: 1) Get Specified Finder items (with the export folder from Lightroom selected) 2) Get Folder Contents 3) Import Photos into iPhoto (with the delete source option selected).
I placed the Automator app, named "Import to iPhoto" into the Lightroom "Export Actions" folder and selected it in the post-processing drop down in my export preset. When exporting from this preset, the file(s) are exported as expected, however, for some reason the Automator action imports duplicate files into iPhoto for each photo exported. If the photos are exported separately without the post-processing export action, and then the Automator action is run manually, there are no duplicate files imported. Does anybody have any ideas what might be occuring here?

  • Exporting photos and metadat from iPhoto '09 to Lightroom 3

After several years managing 110K+ photos and movies in iPhoto, I am reluctantly considering moving to Adobe Lightroom. I paid $200 for Aperture, but the most recent releases of both Aperture and iPhoto are so buggy that I'm not upgrading. I was very sad to reach this conclusion.
I am seriously considering moving to Adobe Lightroom for its power, stability, and availability on much cheaper PC hardware. Does anyone know of a way to export everything I've done in iPhoto (including hundreds of hours of tagging and photo editing) to Lightroom? I've spent a couple of hours reading forums and haven't seen anything (instructions or app) that will do the job.
I really wish Apple had nailed Aperture since I'm now needing it's photo editing power together with iPhoto's excellent organization capabilities. This was the promise of Aperture 3. Now I just feel dumb for spending the $200 (since the app is both buggy and available for $80 in the app store).
I would deeply appreciate any advice on the transition to Lightroom 3 from iPhoto '09... and I will always be an Apple fan.

    Terence,
You rock for posting such a quick reply so late at night. Thank you!
I forgot about those checkboxes. Excellent point. Thanks for the description heads up. I'm fine losing the faces info (esp. since LR3 doesn't offer it as you said). It's the keywords and titles that I've spent 100's of hours on
Have you tried importing to LR with exported metadata? Did it work end to end for you? I'll check out iPhoto to Disk in depth.
I would like to keep my originals and the modified versions. Do you know of any way to avoid doubling the item count in my library to nearly a quarter of a million? I am hoping to avoid having an original and modified version of each file. I actually suffered that once through an iPhoto issue a couple of years ago and hope not to repeat.
To add more context to my Aperture and iPhoto '11 comments, the iPhoto '11 comments are purely a reflection of what I've read in hours of forum reading and not my direct experience. On Aperture, my experiences are actually limited -- focusing solely on importing a huge iPhoto library to Aperture. I spent tens of hours over several weeks trying to migrate and simply failed. The memory leaks got me time and again, no matter how I reconfigured the import (for example by splitting 110K photos into approx 50 individual imports). I should've called out that once (partially) imported, everything seemed to be faster and smoother in Aperture than in iPhoto. Thanks for the call out.

  • Lightroom 1.2: XMP-bug still present and some other things

    * I just upgraded to 1.2, but the XMP-bug is still present. When I turn on autowrite XMP LR starts using 50% (1 of 2 cores) of my CPU for quite a long time (15+ minutes) after startup. During that time the interface is somewhat sluggish (probably because of the lack of multi threading).
This behavior was also present in LR1.1. Turn off autoxmp and the cpu-usage will drop to 1-2% within a few moments of starting LR. Turn it on, and it will use your cpu for quite a long time (29.000 photos in my DB).
    * One other thing I still notice: when using identity plates for printing, the identity plate doesn't rotate with the photo when switch from a landscape to a portrait photo (auto rotate is on to make things a lot easier). The print module is one of the greatest things in LR, but this still annoys me)
    * Decent support for multi core CPU's is still lacking it seems. I have to run two export batches simultaneously to get my CPU to 100% cpu usage. Maybe it's an idea to split one export batch into several smaller ones so the can be processed at the same time using both cores.

1.2 fixes a bug in the auto-write mechanism that severely effected the performance of auto-write when files with changes were offline. Unfortunately, we didn't have time in the cycle to drastically enhance performance of the XMP auto-write mechanism for making large batches of changes or toggling the option on and off. The Lightroom team is aware of these issues and is working to resolve them for a later release.
The wording of the download page is pretty obscure. For a more accurate, detailed review of the changes in 1.2, please refer to the blog post at http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/ . For a better understanding of ways to use the auto-write mechanism in the interim, check out my post at

  • I am trying to export photos and keep receiving an error message. I tried relocating my catalog to see if that would help since I am saving to an external drive, but now I can't find my catalog at all either.

I am trying to export photos and keep receiving an error message. I tried relocating my catalog to see if that would help since I am saving to an external drive, but now I can't find my catalog at all either. I am a newbie at this and don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I can even use an external drive for my photos and catalogs (I did enable smart previews so I do know how to do that part). Help!

You can use an external drive with LR but I recommend only using it for
image file storage while keeping your catalog on your internal HD for
performance. If you moved files outside of LR (Finder or Explorer) you will
have to clue LR in on where they are now. Use the left-hand folder panel in
Library mode to navigate to the location on your external drive and use the
find photo option get LR to reconnect them. If you moved the catalog and
now LR can't find it you should get a window allowing you to select a new
one where you can navigate to the new location and select it. You can also
just start LR by clicking on the Lightroom 5 catalog.lrcat file to open it
    and start LR.

  • Export Pics AND retain directory structure

I'd like to use Bridge to manage the photos I put onto my iPod, here's the general workflow:
All pictures are stored in directories by event (date) in the /pictures/ folder, for example:
    /pictures/2008-07-01 Hike in Woods
    /pictures/2008-07-02 Bike in Woods
    /pictures/2008-07-05 Meeting with Tiger Woods
Here's what I'd like to do:
I rate all my pictures in Bridge using Color Labels (Green=Good, Yellow=Just OK, Red=Bad.
I'd like to use Bridge to select all "Good" pictures taken this year (easy to do using Search), but the rub is that I'd like to export these pictures but retain the directory structure. For example, I have a directory where I store all my pictures for my iPods and I'd like to retain the folder structure so that I can easily browse just my Good pictures on my iPod:
    /iPodPictures/
    /iPodPictures/2008-07-01 Hike in Woods
    /iPodPictures/2008-07-02 Bike in Woods
    /iPodPictures/2008-07-05 Meeting with Tiger Woods
This way, I can have iTunes monitor the /iPodPictires folder when I sync and copy over any pictures I move there, but only copy over the Good pictures and keep the rest off my iPod.
If I just do a Search, all the files show up in 1 window, and when I export, they are all put into 1 directory, which isn't easy to browse.
Any ideas how I can accomplish this using Bridge? I also own LightRoom, so if there are ways I could use that instead of Bridge, that would work as well.
    Thanks!

I started simmilar thread in Lightroom Feature Requests few months ago, but can't find it anymore since new forum version...
What I can suggest as a new feature is export to directory structure from collections or second option from keywords. Probably more usable and easier to implement would be from collections.
What I need it to export many photos to different directories pretty often, and this would be great help since I could arrange them in collections and collection sets. Then select collection set and export it in a manner that collection set would be main export directory, and each collection within the set would be exported to its own folder within main collection set export folder.
This would be much appreciated feature in near future
Thank you for great product by the way

  • Rework exported file and what's with catalogs?

OK ... let's see if I can explain what I've done. I was working with a RAW file and then exported it as a jpeg of fairly low resolution. This file was worked on more than a month ago. Although I removed the folder within which the exported file was ... I copied that to an external hard disk. When I re-imported the original RAW file I was working on ... there is no history associated with it. I assume I have to reload the catalog that was created when I worked on the raw file the first time around ... is that correct? So, when I did ... there was still no history.
I have the low res jpeg file ... but I want the original RAW file as it was just before I exported it. How can I recover that? With the original raw file and the appropriate catalog?
I'd like to go into the history just before I exported the last time ... and export once more at higher resolution.
I hope this isn't too confusing!
Thanks much and I hope you can help.

    Pairodox wrote:
If I 'remove' a folder from the left column in 'library' am I removing the record of these keystrokes?
Yes, if you remove a folder (and its photos) from Lightroom, you are deleting the history of edits that you made, and also deleting any metadata applied to the photo. As I said, you do NOT want to do this. Once you import a photo into Lightroom, you keep it imported in Lightroom; you do not delete it (or its folder) from Lightroom.
I have been doing this and keepking archival copies of images on an external hard drive. I have not wanted to clutter my computer.
Used properly, Lightroom does not clutter your computer.
And in the future, how can I retain these histories without actually having the RAW files on my computer ... I would rather have them archivally stored on an external hard drive?
Don't put the RAW photos on the internal drive in the first place. When you import from your camera, put the RAW photos on the external HD. Not only is this fewer steps, but it meets your goal of keeping the RAW photos on the external HD.
but I've got 6 months of edits that I'm getting the feeling are gone ... not to be recovered.
Yes, you definitely need to make backups of BOTH your catalog file and photos, to a different hard disk than where the original is stored.
If you double-click on the existing backup catalog files, you may find the edit history of your photos. In which case, you might need to reconnect the photos in this backup catalog via this method: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

  • Lightroom stalls on trying to export from the book module

Lightroom stalls on trying to export from the book module to either PDF or Blurb. Progress bar at the top left just shows "Exporting book...rendering cover.untitled DNG". I have even tried a single page low resolution book but no difference. This happened in Lightroom 4 and still after upgrading to Lightroom 5. I have tried I have tried also unchecking all the background options.

When you click on <Send Book to Blurb> a dialog should come up that asks for your ID and password for your Blurb account. I don't know if Blurb ships to Norway - you probably can find out at the Blurb website. But I don't think that this is the problem here since you also cannot export a PDF or JPGs.
I don't know of any specifics why this is not possible for you but it's worth trying to replace the Preference File.
This file can go "funny" and is then responsible for all kinds of strange behavior of Lr. The remedy is replacing the Preference File.
BTW: Re-installing Lr or updating / upgrading Lr does not replace the Preference File since it is designed to "survive" upgrades.
See here for where to find the Preference file for your OS: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroo m-4.html

  • Trying to export RAW originals from Aperature 3 to LightRoom 4: I choose File Export Originals. I think then Pictures LR. But then I can't find files in LR library.Files seem stuck in Pictures as NEF

Trying to export RAW originals from Aperature 3 to LightRoom 4: I choose File>Export>Originals. Then Pictures>LR. But then I can't find files in LR library.Files seem stuck in Pictures as NEF and or DNG files. I know Im stuck on something dumb but I am stuck. Help?

You now need to import those files into Lightroom.
BTW, Lightroom uses a "referenced" system so your images will always be in the folders you download/copy them to. Lightroom is a database first and foremost, albeit with non-destructive editing capabilities (effectively Adobe Camera Raw).

  • Lightroom 3.4 will not export ( or import)

I am hoping one of you may have the answer to my question...
Lightroom 3.4 will not export a file to any place except the user a/c. When I open the export dialog box (File>export) or right-click or the box at bottom left of the library window, and select 'choose', it will only show me the user account. i am unable to see either the C;/ drive, any of the other HDD's on my machine (9@) or the LAN i use. a similar thing happens when importing. i am using Win 7 Pro x32 SP1 with all updates, 4Gb RAm Nvidia 9800GT...
    I have tried the following:
    deleted the preferences. No joy.
reinstalled in a newly named folder after rebooting. No joy.
created a new user account and copied data across, using the MS-approved method. No joy.
4 Called Adobe tech support., who referred me to their Lr specialist. He told me
he had no idea what the problem was and
to create yet another user account and move data across in chunks.(Your Case Number:0182304540) and see when it fell over. Definitely no joy.
With work piling up, i am getting frustrated.
Maybe it is time to move to Photo Mechanic..
unless one of you has a suggestion...please

hi: i think i have found a way around it.
by manually entering the drive address/path in the folder to be selected, it suddenly shows it.
likewise entering the adress and saving it as a new export preset suddenly brings up all the hidden presets.
wish i knew why it did this...

  • What is the difference between"export audio and "bounce"?

What is the difference between the "export audio" and "bounce" functions?
Do plug ins get saved with the created BWF(broadcast wave files)in the "export" function?
Or is the "bounce" method the required function to enable plugins embedded in BWF files?
Also I noticed that the "convert to SDII file" produces files not readable by ProTools.
It was my understanding that using the convert to SD II files via the audio bin is used, it would produce BWF files for use in Protools. And if you use symbols like / in your track names the files won't get converted or bounced!
Also would it not be cool if LE8 had a feature that could render BWF files small enough to send via internet file sharing and transfer apps, in other words a built in file transfer feature. Am I asking for too much.

Export audio is good to move the tracks to another application or computer for further editing.
Bounce renders the mix into a stereo track in 2 basic ways: PCM, i.e. uncompressed, or compressed (like AAC, mp3 etc.).
PCM can be AIFF, Broadcast WAV (even if it's written only WAV those are BWF), and SDII that's the standard file type of ProTools.
Note that PT doesn't use interleaved stereo files but two separate files for left and right channels, i.e. filename.l and filename.r and if you save in this way PT will accept those files for sure.
Uncompressed audio files cannot be compacted (in fact, that's why they're called uncompressed).
These days there are a lot of Internet services that permit to transfer several Gb (up to 5) for free.
If you are thinking of something like Digidelivery then you should put your attention towards Digi's products, not Apple's ones.
    cheers

I installed lightroom 5 with a 30 day trial and it finished.
Yesterday I installed cc and when I open LR5 I need a serial number.
What do I do/how do I get one?
    Please help, Thank you.

Your photos remain in place, the catalog you have been using will remain. After you install Lightroom from the CC, all you have to do is open your existing catalog and continue right where you left off.

  • IR export options and embedded HTML

    Good day,
    Apex 3.2.1.00.12, 9.2.0.8 DB, on AIX 5.3.
I have an IR where in I use html in the SQL that defines it to format certain columns such as the below
"<div style=""overflow:auto;height:50px;"">column value here</div>"I then define the display type as ' Standard Report Column '.
That obviously allows me to have some "formatting" power that the IR does not give by default.
Problem is when I do the export to a CSV I get the html markup included as the value of the column.
Is there a way I can keep my formatting desires and export without the html included in the value ?
Also, can I export the whole result set to CSV, not just whatever I have pagination set to ?
I do NOT have a print server.
    Thanks for your time,
    CLG

    What export option you used.
I am using default export option and it exports all the records on report. Not current page.
Furthermore for your requirment I ahve done lot of test regaring same thing. But I didnt find any solution. So what I did was create my own export function for those reports and then use that.
    Thanks
