Lightroom Mobile and RAW-files on iPad's

Hello,
In a Dutch photo magazine called ZOOM.nl I have read, that it is impossible to get RAW-files from a camera (I guess they mean through the SD-card adapter) on an iPad to work with them in Lightroom Mobile!?
Is this true? Because on the official Apple-site I read Enhance everything from smartphone photos to raw images from DSLRs in the description of LR Mobile on iPad's.
Which statement is correct?
Best regards,
Huub Martens.

  • Lightroom Mobile and Raw files in Camera Roll

I made a new collection in Lightroom Mobile.  I tried to add some files from my camera roll.  The raw files in my camera roll do not show up when I click on the Add from Camera Roll button.  Is working with raw files in the camera roll not an option in Lightroom Mobile?  My NEF files from my mac have synced over just fine.

This reply may seem a bit old, but I  just started using Lightroom (Desktop and Mobile) this week. I do a good bit of international shooting
(four continents thus far). So I am always looking for ways to improve what I do - especially keeping images safe in the field.
I am shooting with a full frame DSLR and Have and IPAD Mini 3 with 128 Gb
From my experimentation I can tell you the following:
    1. You can import raw files to an Ipad using the camera connection kit. Either direct from camera or using card reader.
    2. The images show up in the IPAD camera roll, but what you are really seeing is the embedded jpeg from the raw file.
    3. There are other APPS that can read these - I currently use PHOTOGENE (I have nothing to do with the company, just a customer) It allows me to do basic edits as well as ad watermarks prior to sending images to Social Media etc.
My theory on Lightroom Mobile and Ipad:
Lightroom mobile syncs your edits between you collection on your Ipad and you Collection on your desktop via WIFI. All of this is done
with "smart"  Previews. These are very small and take very little bandwidth.
I would imagine the syncing between the Ipad and Desktop is handled much like "copying edits" on your desktop in Lightroom. As an example - You have two different images of a dog in Lightroom on your desktop you pull up the first and increase brightness and then increase saturation. You can then choose to copy those edits - pull up the second dog image and paste the edits - and magically the second dog image has increased brightness and saturation.
So, when you are editing a Collection that started on your Desktop in Mobile on you I pad - Lightroom isn't syncing by sending the entire edited image it actually is doing a long distance cut and paste of the edits you perform (very little bandwidth).
For this to work with a RAW file that was just added to and Ipad in the field - the whole Raw image would have to be sent first. (My raw images are 23- 27 meg). So you can see the problem. As a serious photographer that sells my work, I would never consider doing final edits on Lightroom Mobile - Since I use Lightroom on my desktop in conjunction with Photoshop CC, OneOne Suite 9 and Photomatix
The reason that Photogene works is that it is only manipulating the embedded Jpeg file from Raw file. It never has to export the raw file.
DON'T DISMISS THE IPAD/Lightroom Mobile AS A VALUABLE TOOL FOR PHOTOGRAPHY - HERE ARE A FEW REASONS.
Backups in the field. When on a trip where I will be filling many cards, I don't believe in pulling a cared in and out of the camera. I leave a card in the camera until almost but not completely full. At that point I connect the Camera via USB to the Ipad Camera adapter and plug that into my I pad. I then download all images. I then remove the card and store it in a case.
I can now view my images on the bigger and WAY better Ipad Retina Screen. If I have some I want to share before I get home I can make some basic edits to the Jpeg with Photogene and send those via email, Facebook, etc.
I am not secure with on one backup of my card - So I carry a Small Ravpower unit. ($40.00 on Amazon, etc. The Ravpower serves as a backup charger for my Idevices - But most importantly it has a CF clot and a USB port. I place a cf CARD in the slot and/or a thumbdrive in the USB port. (since the Ravpower holds a charge you can also plug in a portable Drive via USB (like a WD Passport)
Using the free App for the RavPower unit I can then set up a private WIFI network between my Ipad and the Ravpower unit and copy the raw files to it. (it takes a while so I usually start this just before turning in and have both the Ravpower and the Ipad connected to charging cables. So now I have my raw stored on the card, the Ipad and whatever I hooked to the Ravpower.
Another great use of Lightroom Mobile and an Ipad is to share you images using Apple TV. My wife doesn't like to sit around the PC fpr long periods of time. So I create collections Using Lightroom Desktop and then pull them up on Lightroom Mobile and send via Apple TV and AIRPLAY as a slideshow on our large screen TV.
Hope some of the above is useful to someone.

  • Lightroom Mobile - Importing Raw Files from the iPad

Using the iPad connection kit, I imported a few Raw files (CR2) into my iPad Air. When I tired to import them into a collection but Lightroom Moble did not "see" the raw images yet they are showing in the last imported album on the iPad. I've tried everything but Lightroom Mobile is not seeing them. Any ideas on this??
    Thanks

    James,
I wrote up my thoughts on this topic late last week:  http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/04/the-field-triage-opportunity-for-lr-mobile .html

  • Why files in Lightroom mobile  and files in the creative clouds not the same?

Why files in Lightroom mobile  and files in the creative clouds not the same?
Idea was to store date in one place. I have subscribed to photographer option

Do you mean you are trying to sync files from Creative Cloud to mobile and it doesn't work? I don't know much about Lightroom. It's better to ask your question at Photoshop Lightroom.

Lightroom Mobile is not a cloud storage service. You shouldn't treat it as a way of backing up your files. You are merely storing Smart Previews of your files in the cloud space, high-quality JPEGs of your files regardless of their original format on your desktop. The point is that they are there so you can continue editing them in a Lightroom-like environment even while away from your desktop/laptop computer. The files in Lightroom Mobile can only be used in Lightroom Mobile.
This is very different from what is offered by the Creative Cloud storage, which can be used to synchronize your files between any device (that can support the individual files).
The vast difference in how each service works and its intended use is why they are separate.

  • Nikon D5200 and Lightroom 4 - Incompatible Raw Files

I just purchased a Nikon D5200. When I attempted to import my photographs into Lightroom 4, the raw files were incompatible. Every support topic I found said that I needed to go to the help menu in Lightroom and click "check for updates." But when I go to the help menu there is no option to check for updates. After I attempted to import the files and the dialog box said that the import failed there was a option to check for updated. When I clicked on this nothing happened.
I manually downloaded version 4.4. I installed it, but when I open Lightroom it still says I am running 4.1. I have restarted Lightroom and my computer.

On my MAC, Lightroom has ALWAYS replaced the old one.  This has been on Snow Leopard thru Mountain Lion.   It just replaces the "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.app" in the applications folder with the new package.  The Dock icon then points to the new one.  I have never ran a RC so maybe this has something to do with it.

  • Separating jpg and raw files after importing in lightroom 5

i would like to separate my jpg and raw files once they are in lightroom (right after importing) so that all my jpgs are 1 after the other on the film strip below  and my raw files are one after the other. is this possible?

In Library Grid view, on the Tool Bar (T), change "Sort:" to "File Extension"

  • JPG and RAW files are not grouped together.

I am finding that my RAW and JPG files are not grouped together.  They show up on the Grid View as JPG for the JPG file and RAW + JPG for the NEF(RAW) file.  This does not seem to be consistent through out the folder.  Some of the pictures are grouped together and others are not.  The ones that are not grouped together have been auto-stacked and then unstacked.  I am not sure if this is what caused the seperation of JPG and RAW files.  I did try to take a picture that I had auto-stacked it  and then remove it and it did not sepearate.  The "Treat JPG files next to raw files as seperate photos" option is turned off, like it is in my Lightroom 3.

This is what I'm talking about:
    Show subfolders are on:
    In windows Explorer:
    In the Import Dialog:
    Where are the files?
If I click on the Folder 2014_12_14... all the files from all folders will populate.

  • Raw files to iPad

Need to transfer raw files to ipad. How?!

Well you can use camera connection kit to transfer from sd card. But if you want to do it from computer, i am searching for the same and have no clue...

  • When will lightroom support d750 raw files?

when will lightroom support d750 raw files?

No one who knows can say and no one who says knows.  I’d GUESS it’ll be before the end of November, around the time Canon releases the 7D Mark II which has already been announced by has a ship date sometime in November according to B&H.
While you’re waiting, you can download the DNG Converter 8.7 RC from Adobe Labs, and convert your NEFs to DNGs and import those DNGs into LR.  The DNGC is in the CS6 branch of the ACR 8.7 download, here:

  • When showing JPG and RAW files as one, which do we see and which is edited?

    Hi Guys,
Hoping someone out there will have the answer to this.
Just come back from a long trip with thousands of pics in RAW, I like to use Canon DPP to generate the JPGs quickly and to give me Canons interpretation on the RAW image. (Apparently same processing as in camera).
Once imported into Lightroom 3, I have set up to view the JPG and RAW files as one.
    There are two questions:
1.) Which of the two is the visible one in Library mode? can one set the preference?
    2.) Which is edited?
I do not really want to fully develop all the pics in Lightroom as some of the standard shots have come out perfectly and at the same time I feel I need to be able to compare them.
Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

1.) Which of the two is the visible one in Library mode? can one set the preference?
Raw only. The jpeg is sort of like sidecar. Cannot set a preference. The only setting you can change is to view them separately.
    2.) Which is edited?
    Raw only.
... and at the same time I feel I need to be able to compare them.
Lightroom's Canon-specific DNG profiles are developed to match Canon's picture styles (or whatever they are called). So, if you use, say, the Faithful Picture style in Camera, Lightroom's "Camera Faithful" profile will render your raws very close to DPP, if not identical. That's for default settings. However when you start adjusting, Lightroom's and DPP's processing may differ.
You may not even need those Jpegs for comparison, after all.

  • Lightroom mobile does not sync on ipad.

I made a collection on my laptop. The collection does sync with lightroom mobile on my Iphone but I can't get it working on my Ipad.
A few months ago I tested the 30 days trial version on my Ipad, syncing with another collection (with a catalog with another name then the one I'm using now) on another computer. It worked fine then.
Now I'm working with Adobe CC, a new laptop and a catalog with another name.
How can I get it working again? (I already tried reinstalling Lightroom mobile on my Ipad, didn't work).

Did I get it right that you share your catalog between your laptop and a desktop machine. If so, can you describe how you are doing this since the sync accoss multiple LR desktop versions is not yet supported and can cause sometimes sync issues.
Could you please send me a LR Desktop+Mobile diagnostig log  - best as a private message with a downloadable dropbox link.
You can trigger the LR Desktop log via preferences -> Lightroom Mobile and when you hold down the alt key you will notice a generate diagnostic log button
The Lr Mobile app log can be triggered when you open up the settings and long press the to LR Icon a diagnostic log will be generated and attached to your local mail client.

I have just upgraded from Lightroom 5 standalone to Lightroom 6 standalone. I appear to have been automatically enrolled for a 30 day free trial of Lightroom Mobile and Creative Cloud. Reading the FAQ, it appears that after the expiry of the free trial, if I do not sign up and pay, I will only be able to view my pictures on the desktop but not edit them - surely this cannot be true. How do I un-enroll for the 30 day free trial of Lightroom Mobile and CC?

When I was signed into Adobe (which was a requirement for installing the upgrade), Lightroom 6 told my at the top right corner that I had 30 days left of my free trial of Lightroom Mobile and Creative Cloud. In parallel with this forum posting, I am chatting with Adobe support. he is away to find out how to prevent any synching with Creative Cloud during the 30 day free trial. I do not think that Creative Cloud is an application that gets installed on your PC. I think Lightroom 6 has it built in, and can use it if if you are signed up to the Creative Cloud and Lightroom Mobile (which I am for 30 days)

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

  • Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files.

I'm using Panasonic LX3 with its RAW format (a supported RAW format since sometimes with iPhoto '09 already)
When I choose to Photo Stream my images after import with iPhoto '11, it says "Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files."
My files are RAW formats so why can't I photo stream it?!
Is there something I can get around or need to wait for Apple to support this?!

You don;t have a preset set. What you are seeing is normal behavior when importing Raw files.
What you see at first is the camera produced JPG preview imbedded in the Raw file. Aperture puts this up while it decodes the actual Raw data. This JPG has all the special settings and enhancements set on the camera and is basically the image that would be produced if you were shooting JPG.
As a rule none of the settings on the camera (apart from the basics) are applied to the Raw file though some of the newer cameras have settings that could affect the data stored in the Raw file.
This is a often asked question by those just getting into Raw and you can search the discussions here for other answers to this question.
Given the capability of today's cameras, especially the high-end ones, a lot of users have decided to abandon Raw as unnecessary  if they are happy with the images the camera produces. It's all a matter of personal needs.
