Lightroom Mobile - Does It Need To Create Smart Previews Again?

Light

Hi Guido,
Since my other thread doesn't seem to be getting any responses, I'm pasting what I've found here. Please keep in mind I am not a beginner with Lightroom and consider myself very familiar with Lightroom's features excluding the new mobile sync.
1st message:
I'm on Lr 5.5 and using the 30 day trial of Adobe CC to try syncing one collection of slight more than 1000 images. Despite already having generated the Smart Previews, I can see my CPU crunching through image after image (the rolling hills pattern in the task manager) while doing the sync. I was assuming, since I already created the Smart Previews, that the sync of this collection would begin immediately and be done by simply uploading all of the existing Smart Previews. The Smart Previews folder of the catalog is 871MB and has stayed the same despite the CPU obviously doing *something*. As it is now, the sync progress is incredibly slow, almost at a pace like it's actually exporting full-res JPGs from the RAW images (as a comparison only, I know this should not be what it's actually doing).
Another side effect of this is that I'm basically unable to use my computer for other tasks due to the high CPU utilization.
Win 7 x64 / Lightroom 5.5
Intel i5 2500k OC'd 4.5GHz
16GB RAM
SSD for OS, separate SSD for working catalog and files
2nd message:
As a follow up, now Lightroom thinks all 1026 photos are synced (as shown in "All Sync Photographs" portion of the Catalog though all images after the 832nd image show the sync icon per image stuck at "Building Previews for Lightroom Mobile" and the status at the top left corner has been stuck at "Syncing 194 photos" for over 12 hours. Is there no option to force another sync via Lightroom Desktop and also force the iOS app to manually refresh (perhaps by pulling down on the collections view, like refreshing via the Mail app)?
3rd message:
One more update, I went into Preferences and deleted all mobile data, which automatically signed me out of Adobe CC and then I signed back in. Please keep in mind the Smart Previews were long generated before even starting the trial, and I also manually generated them again (it ran through quickly since it found they were already generated) many times. Now that I'm re-syncing my collection of 1026 images, I can clearly see Lightroom using the CPU to regenerate the Smart Previews which already exist. I have no idea why it's doing this except that it's making the process of uploading the Smart Previews extremely slow. I hope this time around it will at least sync all 1026 images to the cloud.
4th message:
All 1026 images synced just fine and I could run through my culling workflow on the iPad/iPhone perfectly. Now I'm on a new catalog (my current workflow unfortunately uses one catalog per event) and I see the same problem: Smart Previews already generated but when syncing, Lightroom seems to re-generate them again anyway (or take up a lot of CPU simply to upload the existing Smart Previews). Can anyone else chime in on what their CPU utilization is like during the sync process when Smart Previews are already created?
New information:
Now I'm editing a catalog of images that is synced to Lightroom Mobile and notice that my workflow has gotten even slower between photos (relative to what it was before, this is not a discussion about how fast/slow LR should perform). Obviously Lightroom is syncing the edited settings to the cloud, but I can see my CPU running intensively (all 4 cores) on every images I edit and the CPU utilization graph looks different than before I started using LR mobile sync. It still feels like every change isn't simply syncing an SQLite database change but re-generating a Smart Preview to go with it (I'm not saying this is definitely what's happening, but something is intensively using the CPU that wasn't prior to using LR Mobile).
For example: I only update the tint +5 on an image. I see the CPU spike up to around 30-40%, then falls back down, then back up to 100%, then back down to another smaller spike while Lightroom says "Syncing 1 photo".  I've attached a screenshot of my CPU graph when doing this edit on just one image. During this entire time, if I try to move onto edit another image, the program is noticeably slower to respond than it was prior to using LR mobile, due to the fact that there appear to be much more CPU intensive tasks running to sync the previous edit.
I'd be happy to test/try anything you have in mind, because it's my understanding that re-syncing photos that are edited that are already in the cloud should be simply updating the database file rather than require regenerating any Smart Previews or other image data. If this continues, I will probably not choose to proceed with a subscription despite the fact that i think LR mobile adds a lot of value and boosts my workflow significantly if it wasn't causing the program to lag so badly in the process.
I know this message was incredibly long and probably tedious to read through so I thank anyone in advance who gets through it

  • Lightroom mobile does not sync in Yosemite os

Lightroom Mobile does not sync after the Yosemite upgrade. It looks like it wants to but nothing happens?
    Thanks.

Could you try to remove the sync.lrdata file and restart Lr Desktop. This would restart/refresh the sync (metadata only).
Removing the Sync.lrdata might fix whatever the issue is.  Or, at least, might trigger it to occur again. So remove the Sync.lrdata, start Lr, and then wait until it either syncs or gets stuck again and create at this point a Lr desktop diagnostic log which can hopefully provide some clues.
You can find the  sync.lrdata file here:
    On Mac it's at /Users/<user>/Library/Caches/Adobe/Lightroom/Sync Data/Sync.lrdata
Please send me the LR Desktop diagnostig log  - best as a private message with a downloadable dropbox link.
You can trigger the log via LR Desktop preferences -> Lightroom Mobile and when you hold down the alt key you will notice a generate diagnostic log button
    Thanks

  • Create smart previews automatically in a collection

    Hi everybody,
    Small question;
Is there a way to automatically create smart previews inside a collection?
Now, I know how to create a smart collection of only my holiday pictures with a five star rating. That's not the problem, but is there a way that these pictures are automatically transferred into a smart preview?
    Cheers for your replies!
    Raymond

    Hi Rob,
Well, your the software develper with Lightroom... I hope you can find a way, but then again I am realistically enough to understand that  the LR-Team can't accomodate everyones wishes. Thank God, for that by the way!
In General I do wanna say... LR is GREAT, super program! Job well done! The upgrade is worth the money, especially the performance boost is super!
Just one other thing, maybe I should start a new question for this... You'll be the judge...
Phase One, I think, have something called a focus mask (http://blog.phaseone.com/tag/focus-mask/.) A mask that shows in an overlay (in the preview) the area that is in focus. Give the link a read, its very interesting and something I wish LR would have.
If you're at it, I mean develping for LR, think of a focus mask. Especially with makro/food photography its very helpful.
    Ray
PS: Thanks for your quick replies. The service LR gives is very good indeed! And the help you get is very accurate! (You beat Apple at that point by miles)

  • LR 5 not creating smart previews

I set create smart previews when I imported my images...none show up.
I selected some files (with originals available) and went Library>previews>create smart previews...the tast bar zipped across the top left but no previews were created.
Any idea what setting may be wrong that make this happen (or not happen)
    Thanks
    Tom

    Rob-
There is no smart preview icon next to the original photo icon on the top of the right side panel.
I do have a smart previews . Irdata  - looks more like a file than a folder? It also shows that it was last updated almost a month ago - I should also say that I keep my lrcat and lrdata files in a folder on dropbox - could this have anything to do with it.
When I've created the smart previews, I do it as I import (using LR to import).
I do my imports from cards on whichever computer (desk or laptop) expecting that since it's going to the LR files on DropBox it doesn't matter - they will be available to both computers (if I am importing to the laptop, I later move the files to the external HD with finder and then have LR find the files once they are in the final resting place).
To test this. I imported a few folders on the desktop, unplugged the external drive where the originals are and LR did not show the smart preview icon.
This actually doesn't matter on the desktop, but I was hoping to delete all original files on the laptop (which I'd better not do yet :-)
    Thanks for your help.

  • Is there any way to get my playlists back, or do I need to create them all again?

Just installed iTunes on HP Envy running windows 8.1 and downloaded my music from external drive. On my previous device I had my music sorted into playlists. Is there any way to get my playlists back, or do I need to create them all again?

    Hi there msc74,
If you still have access to your previous computer, the easiest way to accomplish this is to transfer the iTunes library to your new device. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • Lightroom mobile does not sync on ipad.

I made a collection on my laptop. The collection does sync with lightroom mobile on my Iphone but I can't get it working on my Ipad.
A few months ago I tested the 30 days trial version on my Ipad, syncing with another collection (with a catalog with another name then the one I'm using now) on another computer. It worked fine then.
Now I'm working with Adobe CC, a new laptop and a catalog with another name.
How can I get it working again? (I already tried reinstalling Lightroom mobile on my Ipad, didn't work).

Did I get it right that you share your catalog between your laptop and a desktop machine. If so, can you describe how you are doing this since the sync accoss multiple LR desktop versions is not yet supported and can cause sometimes sync issues.
Could you please send me a LR Desktop+Mobile diagnostig log  - best as a private message with a downloadable dropbox link.
You can trigger the LR Desktop log via preferences -> Lightroom Mobile and when you hold down the alt key you will notice a generate diagnostic log button
The Lr Mobile app log can be triggered when you open up the settings and long press the to LR Icon a diagnostic log will be generated and attached to your local mail client.

  • Lightroom Mobile does not sync

Hi.  The collections in Lightroom synced with Lightroom mobile once when first setup.  It does not sync anything now. I installed Lightroom 5.6 and I have deleted all the data. I have logged in and out of my profile. It still does not sync.
Please advise of a possible next step.
    Thanks,  -BrianP

Can you please explain a little bit more precisely what you are expecting?
Is it Lightroom desktop or Lightroom Mobile (on the device) that doesn't sync?
Where do you expect the sync to happen. Have you made edits - if so on which side (Desktop/Mobile)?
When you mention that you have deleted all the data, what exactly did you delete?
Have you enabled sync again after logging in again?
Which OS are you using on the desktop side?
    Thanks,

  • I tested Adobe CC then bought an educational license with another ID. Lightroom Mobile does not work anymore.

I tested Adobe CC then bought an educational license with another ID. I cannot use Lightroom Mobile. Message "Evaluation version has expired is displayed" and information in Preferences showing the old ID, not the new one. Disappointing support from Adobe. How to get rid of the old information and solve the problem?

Thanks but it did not work. Adobe (USA, not France) solved the problem. My subscription was not correctly entered in the database, it seems.

  • Lightroom Mobile does not recognise my custom sort order

I cannot find a way to get the Lightroom Mobile app on my iPad to recognise the custom sort order set up for the collection on my desktop. I am on the current versions of both Lightroom and Lightroom Mobile. The only sort option that appears in LR mobile is by capture time. The custom sort order is available as an option for the collection on the Abobe website but not on the mobile app.

You can change the sort type when you touch the Capture Type-label. So tab on the "Capture Time"-label and you will see the other sort options like "Modified Date", "Custom Order" etc.
    Hope that helps.

  • Lightroom 6 creats smart previews slower than lightroom 5 why?

Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or something else... i couldn't beleive when I import my first gallery !!!  IT WAS TOO SLOW (the smart previews import)!
I try the same gallery with Lightroom 5 and brought the smart previews in seconds !!

Thanks , I will follow the tread that you have mentioned.
I read it just now and it is a deception. not sure that was a good idea for me to upgrade LR 5.7.1 to 6 "beta" as quick...

  • Why does FF need to create 10,000 folders for the cache? How do I make it go back into single folder mode?

Before it was x:\\Cache\"stuff"...Simple easy to find files if you need to.
    Now its..
    x:\\Cache\X\x1\"a little stuff"
    x:\\Cache\X\xA\"a little more stuff"
    x:\\Cache\X\x0\"a even more little stuff"
    x:\\Cache\X\x9\" crap... I'm lost now""
What is the purpose for the extra folders? I want to be able to revert it back to single folder mode.

You would need to revert to Firefox 3.6.23 to have the old cache setup.
The multiple cache folder setup is to allow for a larger cache which works more efficiently that earlier versions worked.

During this entire time, if I try to move onto edit another image, the program is noticeably slower to respond than it was prior to using LR mobile, due to the fact that there appear to be much more CPU intensive tasks running to sync the previous edit. This is proven by un-syncing the collection and immediately the lag goes away.
I'd be happy to test/try anything you have in mind, because it's my understanding that re-syncing photos that are edited that are already in the cloud should be simply updating the database file rather than require regenerating any Smart Previews or other image data. Thanks for reporting. Just passed  along your info to some of our devs. One of the things that needs to be created (beside smart previews) during an initial sync are thumbnails + previews for the LrM app - Guido
    Hi Guido,
Thanks for pointing this out. I realized the same thing when I tried syncing a collection for offline mode and found out the required space sounded more like Previews + Smart Previews rather than just the Smart Previews.
    greule wrote:
Hi Jeff, are your images particularly large or do you make a lot of changes which you save to the original file as part of your workflow?
The CPU usage is almost certainly from us uploading JPEG previews not the Smart Previews - particularly during develop edits as these force new JPEG previews to be sent from Lightroom desktop, but would not force new Smart Previews (unless the develop edits are modifying the original file making us think the Smart Preview is out of date) to be sent.
    Guido
My images are full-resolution ~22mp Canon 5D Mark III RAW files so they're fairly large. Even if I only make one basic change such as exposure changes, I saw the issue. By "save to the original file" I'm assuming metadata changes such as timestamps, otherwise edits to the images aren't actually written to the original file. I'm only doing develop module edits so I shouldn't be touching the original file at all at this point in my workflow.
I think it makes sense now that you mention that new JPEG previews need to be generated and sent to the cloud due to updated develop edits. My concern is that this seems to be done in real-time as opposed to how Lightroom Desktop works (which is to render a new Standard Preview or 1:1 Preview on demand, which means only one is being rendered at any given time while viewing it in Loupe View or possibly 2 in Compare View). If I edit, for example, 10 images quickly in a row, once the sync kicks in a few seconds later, editing the 11th image is severely hindered due to the previous 10 images' JPEG previews being rendered and sync'd to the cloud (I'm assuming the upload portion doesn't take much CPU, but the JPEG render will utilize CPU resources to the fullest if it can). Rendering Standard/1:1 Previews locally and being able to walk away while the process finishes works because it is at the start of my workflow, but having to deal with on-the-fly preview rendering while I'm editing greatly impacts my ability to edit. Perhaps there can be a way to limit max CPU utilization for background sync tasks?
It may help to know that I'm running a dual-monitor setup, with Lightroom on a 27" 2560x1440 display maximized to fit the display (2nd display not running LR's 2nd monitor). Since I'm using a retina iPad, the optimal Standard Previews resolution should be the same at 2880 pixels.
    Thanks again for the help!
