That happened to me several times way back with Lightroom 3.
This helped me:
1) Try again (Reessayer), try again, try again.
2) Optimize catalog before trying to backup ( >File menu > Optimize Catalog).
3) It also helps if you do the backup often (i.e. each time Lightroom exits - you can always skip).
4) Is there enough space in the folder where you backup the catalog. Delete some older backups. Lightroom makes a complete catalog backup each time the backup feature runs. Therefore older versions of backups are mostly unnecessary (and also not very helpful in case of a "disaster"). I regularly delete all backups that are older than a month.

Open Pictures folder and move the files named lrcat-journal and lrcat.lock to Desktop.
Make sure that , they are not inside Pictures folder any more and try to open backup from Lighrtroom and check..
Any LRcat file with .lock extension , move it to Desktop.

I  have a new Mac Pro computer and have migrated my files from my older computer to the new computer. In trying to open a Lightroom catalog on an external hard drive  I keep on getting the message "lightroom cannot use the catalog named " " because it is  not writable and cannot be opened. I have fixed all the "permissions" and yet it will still not open. How do I fix this?

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

You need to have writing permission where a LR catalog is stored.
Even for just opening a catalog, since this database does not have a save-to-catalog command.
Maybe it makes sense that you do not have them for a backup storage location in order to prevent accidental overwriting?
If you agree, first copy the lrcat-file to your usual working folder where you have writing permission, maybe renaming it if that would overwrite you real working catalog.
If you do not agree, remedy the writing permission for your user account at the backup spot.

  • Lightroom cannot use the Catalog named "Lightroom 5" because it is not ........

I keep getting an error after closing Lightoom "Lightroom cannot use the Catalog named "Lightroom 5" because it is not writable and cannot be opened"
Eventually I have been able to regain acess only to have it happen again, it is happening every day now.  I have tried shutting down services and programs, sometimes it works. I have restarted my computer, I have deleted previews.lrdat and that worked once, but not always.  I have saved and optimised the catalog, still happens.  there is no journal file open or in existence when this error happens and finally, now I have lost my publish services which represent the record of hudreds, even thousands of online images.  HELP

Have you checked the permissions on the folder where the catalog is stored and the permissions on the catalog file itself? Does it show write permission or something else?
And just a wild shot in the dark, you should also check to see if the catalog file or its folder is shown as Read Only by your operating system (It should not be)

    Cordialement NKC

  • Photoshop Elements 6 to Lightroom -- How to move the Catalog

So, how do you import a photoshop elements 6 catalog into Lightroom.

    Judith,
Not quite. Keywords are written to metadata when you write the tags, you do not write the categories or sub-catagories, which is what determines the hierarchy.
(Library>New Folder Ctrl Shft N) and browse to the Folder (eg. My Photos/Adobe/Digital Camera Photos). Accept default choices, unless you want to do some global changes. It will bring all photos in and the sub folders as well. If you have already done this without writing the tags, write the tags and import again. It should only grab the changed metadata.
If not, delete the folder from lightroom (This does not delete the files from disk.)and re import.

  • Lightroom was unable to optimize the catalog - Error Since Loading v1.3

I just installed Lightroom v1.3 over Lightroom v1.2. Since then, I have been unable to optimize the catalog. When I try, it looks like it is working for a while, and then gives me this message. 'Lightroom was unable to optimize the catalog and must quit. The next time you run Lightroom, it will check the catalog for problems."
I have tried multiple times to restart Lightroom and Windows and reoptimize, but same message. I tried with a two week old catalog file, but still get the message. I uninstalled v1.3 and reloaded v1.2 and tried with the current catalog file and with older catalog files, still get message.
Lightroom v1.2 and v1.3 runs, but I have noticed things running slower with v1.3 and I have to restart more often due to Lightroom slowdown. I need to be able to optimize to keep things running as fast as possible.
    Lightroom Catalog.lrcat is 1.3 GB
    Approximately 75,000 images
Windows XP Profession Service Pack 2
    Pentium 4 2.80GHz
    2GB RAM
Normally, I back up the database 2-5 times a week and optimize the DB 3-6 times a week, along with keeping the hard drive defragged.

Is your machine maxing out during these times? My guess is it's got 10-50,000 left photos to update to v 1.3. It may be not a good thing to switch between the two versions. Until more definitive answers can be found, perhaps running a new catalog for new work might be a good plan, using only v 1.3.

    bien cordialement

  • When I try to open my Lightroom 5 program it comes up with this message, "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit."  How do I fix this?

Can someone please let me know how I can fix this error and open my Lightroom?  Thanks.

You might be quicker help posting in the LR forum rather than the ACR forum, but I believe the way to fix this is to delete the preview cache.
    Find your catalog folder.
    Close LR.
Within the catalog folder, delete the FOLDER called Catalog-Name Previews.lrdata
    Start LR.

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

  • I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.
